Samba Saga
Hi. I am using DHCP behind a Linksys router to obtain local IP addresses and have discovered that even though I can assign a name to my RH6.2 Intel machine somehow the system is not realizing its name. I confirmed this by determining the IP address using 'pump -i eth0 --status' and then putting this IP address in the /etc/hosts file. However, this seems to defeat some of the benefits of using DHCP since you potentially have to do it every re-boot. I must be missing something simple. Samba won't work unless the system can resolve its name and it works with this kluge. However, even with this kluge I don't get any response from ping using the hostname even though it works fine with the explicit IP address. Whazzup? cheers. --- John Helly, University of California, San Diego Sequoyah Hall (SEQ)/ San Diego Supercomputer Center 9500 Gilman Dr. Mail Code 0527 La Jolla CA 92093-0527 Phone: Voice +01 858 534 5060 / FAX +01 858 822 3631 Deliveries: 10100 Hopkins Drive, La Jolla, CA 92093 http://www.sdsc.edu/~hellyj ___ Redhat-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

Bob, Mikkel: I definitely second that one. To know that you helped and the solution was the right one not only benefits the poster and the individual or individuals who solved it but the list in general if the poster would just post the solution that worked for them. Not only could it help someone just receiving list mail that has the same problem but it makes for a more complete archive for future similar problems and a good footer or into to this mail list before getting on should note to "please search the archives first before posting as your question may have already been answered". just an update. i got the bins from xfree86.org(the ones for glibc2.1) and all went great. had to do some editing on the XF86Config file after the XFree86 -config, but it works none the less. my wheel works on my mousemanplus but i am having some problems with xscreensaver. thanks goes out to chuck again for having a nice searchable archive for some other questions i had after the installation of the xfree864.0.2. i kinda rather liked the old config maker for 3.3.6. but, to tell the truth, i see nothing different in 4.0.2 than i did in 3.3.6. maybe i am missing something, i dont know. thank you eric p.s. what is DRI? RE: ethernet card set to 100FDX
Jim, Try looking in /usr/src/linux/Documentation, the kernel documentation directory. More specifically, the networking directory. Most cards have documentation that shows how to change duplex settings. I don't know about recompiling, its usually just a parameter passed when you load the module. If its a 3com card, there are some nice utils written by Donald Becker that can change the settings directly on the card, though I like the module params myself. http://www.scyld.com/network/ is the linux networking site maintained by Donald Becker. Its a pretty good place to start with tons of very useful documentation and usuage instructions for a lot of the linux network cards. i found all the duplex settings for my 3com cards on this site, they work great! i learned that forcing the card to 100full, if supported by the card and switch, works better than autonegotiation. your mileage may vary though. good luck! The ethernet card's driver can specify the speed and duplex. If you need to set it manually, go and look at the source for your specific card's driver, toggle the proper settings, and recompile. Then add it to your kernel's module directory. Do a little insmod magic and then your set. My best advice to you would be to download the newest driver source for your card and start checking it out. 3-button wheel mouse?
Hi. I've got one of those nifty three-button wheel mice but can't figure out how to get the wheel to work. I'm using RH7 with X11 4.0.2. Previously I used imwheel, but it's no longer included with RH7. Also, I've downloaded the freefont package because my fonts look horrible, but also can't figure out why they don't work from the RPM (rpmfind.net) either. Run Xconfigurator or xf86config and select the resolution(s) and color depths you want, but don't select any 8bpp modes if you don't wish to ever use them. You might have to hand edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file a little bit if you've selected multiple resolutions and/or color depths and X is using the wrong one by default. OpenSSH (it's on the powertools CD in 6.2) works fine for me. Just install the rpm and create a server and/or client key. Simple as that if you don't do a custom compile. If you need a windos client you could try putty. If you need a windos server I think you should go with the commercial SSH. I have not found incompatibilities between the two versions, except that an older commercial SSH server would allow me to specify a portnumber (22) in hosts.deny and .allow which confused me somewhat, because I forgot I should have used the daemon name (sshd) instead. Can't get USR Performance-Pro (5610) modem to work
Hi, I am running RH 7.0 (kernel 2.2.16-22), (dual boot with Win 98) and I have installed a US Robotics PCI modem. It is a hardware modem not a win-modem , and the model is: Performance-Pro 3CP5610A (commonly called just 5610 I believe). I cannot get it to work under linux and heard that it can be made to work without making the upgrade to kernel 2.3 or higher. It works fine under Win 98, in plug and play mode, and every time I have checked, has been assigned to COM5 (IRQ 5, address 0xd000). With /sbin/lspci I obtain the information (other PCI devices edited out): 00:09.0 Serial controller: US Robotics/3Com 56K FaxModem Model 5610 (rev 01) (prog-if 02 [16550]) Subsystem: US Robotics/3Com: Unknown device 00d7 Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 5 I/O ports at d000 Capabilities: i.e. linux "sees" something, and the IRQ and port address are the same as for Win98. I then used seterial to set the parameters of ttyS4 so that: # setserial -g /dev/ttyS4 /dev/ttyS4, UART: 16550A, Port: 0xd000, IRQ: 5, Flags: Fourport and then did: ln /dev/ttyS4 /dev/modem At this point I expected minicom to dial out on the modem, but I get: # minicom minicom: cannot open /dev/modem: Device or resource busy This is the first time I have messed around with ports and such. Any one know what I am doing wrong, or, anybody who has the same modem and has successfully negotiated the problem? ATAPI CDR and SCSI CDRW
Hi. I have an ATAPI 4x2x32 CDRW used as a reader and a SCSI Plextor 12x CDRW. The drives are in a 2.2.18 box with software mirroring. The ATAPI drive is a slave, where the master is one of the disks in the array. Even when the system is completely idle, I'm unable to do direct CD-to-CD copies without making a frisbee. I'm pretty sure I was able to do this in the past, but can't figure out why I'm unable to do this now. I can also make frisbee's using 2.4.1 on the same box. It seems during the burning process, the ATAPI drive is reading the whole time, despite the fact that it's a 32x reader, and the data being sent to a 12x writer. What could be the problem? thanks. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hacked - network card problems
Hi all, My home masquerade server got hacked. Intruder started up GRE and to fix I am doing a complete reinstall with a better firewall install. However, when I go to reinstall RH7 with the updates disk and a new boot disk, the installer does not see the NICs (LinkSys). On a prior install these cards were identified without difficulty. Wow. You must be a genius. I never would have thought that kgcc must be installed in order to work. Kernel headers are primarily used to support glibc. To ease migration from 2.2.x to 2.4.x, 7.0 includes a glibc compiled against 2.4.x kernel headers along with the 2.4.x headers required for development. If you are doing kernel development, you should install the kernel-source rpm package, or download a copy of the kernel source from kernel.org. YOU say that our government is inefficient. YOU say that our laws are too old. YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage. YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke, the airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination. YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits. YOU say, say and say. BUT.. What do YOU do about it? Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name - YOURS. Give him a face - YOURS. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best.In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. YOU are as proud of their Underground Links as they are. YOU would pay $5 (approx. Rs.60) to drive through Orchard road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8PM YOU comeback to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective of your status identity. But, in Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn't dare to eat in public during Ramzan, in Dubai. YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah. YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs.500) a month to, "see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else." YOU would not dare to speed in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, "E..Shaane.. Jaanta hai main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so's son. Take your two bucks and get lost." YOU wouldn't chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand. Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo? Why don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston? Yes... We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and confirm to a foreign system in other countries butcannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country why cannot you be the same here in India. Once in an interview, the famous Ex-municipal commissioner of Bombay Mr.Tinaikar had a point to make. "Rich people's dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place," he said. "And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with a broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels? In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet as done the job. Same is in Japan. Will the Indian citizen do that here?" He's right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility. We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stoop to pickup a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms. We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toilettries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies even to the staff who are known not to pass on the service to the public. When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? "It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry." So who's going to change the system? What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, Other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far awayand wait for a Mr. Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand. Or we leave thecountry and run away. Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England. When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. On Tue, Feb 06, 2001 at 12:00:44AM -0600, Bret Hughes wrote: > The linux revolution is just that. ... I just *have* to point out that the Linux revolution is __not__ the OS. For all intents and purposes, Linux is Unix--it looks, smells, tastes, and feels like Unix. It breaks free of control by a single corporate entity, harvests the fruits of the ebullence of a new generation of developers-- and volunteers at that--and has made great additions to the Unix paradigm; but Linus was recreating an existing model. The revolution for Linux has to be the open source model under which it seems to be not just surviving, but thriving (Microsoft's reports of its immenent demise notwithstanding.) Now Unix, THAT was a revolution, functionally and conceptually different than any OS that went before...EXCEPT...*Multics*. Actually, **Multics** was the revolution. Go look it up. And it wasn't a success--oh, it was finally brought out as a commercial OS--I used it--and it formed the underpinning of OS classes in the early '70s, but it never took over the world. But its concepts, borrowed and extended, DID fire the Unix revolution. Tain't easy starting a revolution--what goes around, comes around, and everyone stands on the shoulders of their predecessors. To desire to do something as large as create a new OS can be a laudable thing. The Boys at Bell had a wild and wonderful ride. But the number of failed operating systems that litter the history of our young profession (and, some might say, some that SHOULD have failed continue to litter its present...) attest to the difficulty of coming up with something that is quantifiably BETTER, not just DIFFERENT, than what's come before. That's your challenge if you want to design a new OS--not to just whip out code. You'll have to analyze what we have today--both what's wrong AND right with it--and somehow come up with that combination of features and concepts that are so fundamentally valuable that they make the introduction of a new way of doing things, and the dedicaton of millions of developer-hours of effort, the suffering of the migration pains, the interoperability woes--all of the issues involved with a new world--worth it. And not only worth it, but RECOGNIZED and ACCEPTED as worth it by enough of your peers that it survives. This ain't easy. Good luck.
