Don't use imwheel. My mouse-related stuff looks like this:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "OpticalMouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device""/dev/mouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

Note the IMPS/2 protocol. This is VERY important. So try working the
section above into your config and make sure gpm is running in this
manner:

gpm -t ps/2 -m /dev/mouse

You may need to modify the appropriate startup scripts.

Yes. You can use netcfg to configure any kind of IP address. Here is

Re: Help! strange cpu% results for sar and procinfo

2002-04-02 Thread Mike Lee

This was about the long post on weird numbers for `sar` and `procinfo` on
2 of 4 VALinux servers.

I received a reply on one of the newsgroups (comp.os.linux.redhat) whose
author believed there is a bug allowing the the uptime counter to loop.
And my problem was happening because it looks like the uptime looped its
allotted max. value (probably a long).

1. Does this seem possible for RH 6.2, running 2.2.18pre11-va2.1smp #2
SMP?

2. Is there any way to reset all the /proc/stat counters without
rebooting the machine?

Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Mike

# Emulate3Timeout is the timeout in milliseconds (default is 50ms)
#Emulate3Buttons

# ChordMiddle is an option for some 3-button Logitech mice

EndSection

My XF86Config-4 file pointer section:

Section "InputDevice"

Driver "mouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "off"

EndSection

I have the following files installed:

/usr/local/bin/imwheel

Can anyone help?
Almost forgot, I am running RH7.2 on a compaq deskpro.

you might try this/check these items:

. go back to the previous /etc/mail/sendmail.mc -> /etc/sendmail.cf

- be certain sendmail is listening on the IP addresses your setting up in
your mail clients. double check the line in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc like
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA') is either commented
out or has the IP address you want (multiple lines, each with a
different IP are ok).

- check with `netstat -a --inet`

. you probably want a line like this in /etc/hosts.allow
sendmail: ALL

. add the IP addresses of the hosts that you which to relay to
/etc/mail/access

like this:

192.168.1.1 RELAY

be sure to make this into the database hash that sendmail wants:
cd /etc/mail
make

service sendmail restart

If the write fails, you'd probably be screwed anyway. Get two CD-RW
discs and alternate (or four and do a weekly plus a daily ...)

Users don't need to authenticate - for example, my local hosts don't (I suppose
I should set it up, but haven't gotten around to that). The purpose of
rejecting unresolvable domains is for incoming mail - ie, if I send you smtp
mail from [EMAIL PROTECTED], do you want to accept it? With the test
available, you'll immediately reject it, no matter who the recipient is.

You can't force *all* your mail to be authenticated. How would I sent mail
to you?

Another dummy Sendmail question

2002-04-02 Thread Kerry Miller

Ok guys, I'm back again... I have this in my Sendmail 8.8 server
sendmail.cf file and (before I rem-ed it out) it would allow us to send mail
to our own domail but not outside. Here's what I've got right now:

# added 04022002 by KWM
#FR-o /etc/sendmail.cR

#Scheck_rcpt
# anything terminating locally is ok
#R< $+ @ $=w > $@ OK
#R< $+ @ $* $=R > $@ OK

#anything originating locally is ok
#R$*$: $(dequote "" $&{client_name} $)
#R$=w $@ OK
#R$=R $@ OK
#R$@$@ OK

#anything else is bogus
#R$*$#error $: "550 Relaying Denied"

###
# End of added lines - KWM

I got this from the Sendmail web site (or actually the Moongroup mirror). I
have set up a file called /etc/sendmail.cR with a few of our hostnames in
it, including mine. What have I got fouled up that's preventing us from
sending mail outside of our domain? Is there something else I need to do
besides list the fully-qualified names of the machines which I want to allow
to relay?

Thanks,
Kerry Miller

Yes, Sir, you are right. It turned out to be a flaw in the remote

I read the output of my own command in the first place :(

RE: using cdrecord to backup files.

2002-04-02 Thread Linux

The method of backup you are using would seem to be a little flawed. Have
you considered what would happen if you accidentally deleted an important
file and didn't discover that for a couple of days? What happens if your
backup media fails to restore as sometimes can happen? How would your backup
cope with these scenarios. Using one backup media is the next best thing to
not having a backup at all. We use 9 medias, Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri1 Fri2 ..
Fri5 the Friday media are for each week of the month. In all you have a full
months backup which should be reasonably bullet-proof. If one day fails this
is not as much of a tragedy

If you don't use NIS, then having it in the config file won't do
anything. Removing it shouldn't change the behavior of your
applications at all.

For clarity: the only thing that will continue to use the old
resolv.conf settings are applications that are already running. For
instance, xinetd would continue to use the old config for reverse
lookups on connections. Any command that you start at a prompt will be
using the new config. xinetd will start using the new config as soon as
you restart it.

I don't think "host" uses resolv.conf at all. It's part of the bind
package (bind-utils rpm), and uses its own library for DNS operations.
"host" will not ever try to use files or NIS, because it isn't using the
common libc resolver library.

Re-install the dev rpm. If you use an option like --replacepkgs you can
install on top of the one you've got. dev will create the device files for
all the commonly-used entries, so this may be overkill for you and may
conflict with other site customizations. Tread carefully.

Re: using cdrecord to backup files.

2002-04-02 Thread Shaheen Tonse

Vikram,
For a start I would not worry about the cdwrite
failing.
(a) The probablility of needing a particular
day's backup is small.
(b) Assume that the probability of cdwrite failing
is also small.
(c) The probability of both happening is even
smaller: the multiplication of those 2 small numbers. (assuming that
Murphy's Law does not kick in.)
So just try it for a week or 2. If it turn out
that "b" is wrong, and that cdwrite fails fairly often, then you do need
to do something about it. Maybe keep 2 CD's and switch them every mornig
when you get in to the office.

Good luck, Shaheen Tonse.

2002-04-02 Thread Vikram Patel
I want to use cdrecord to do daily backups. i am running into a small snag. I have to delete the cd before i can write to it. What are the options for cdrecord to overwrite in one command. right now i have created a script to first delete all the data on cd and then write. This script is being executed via cron job. My main concern is if for some reason the cdwrite fails. I have deleted my previous days backup. Then would be left with no backup.
Any help is appreciated.

Portmap is running on both client and server. We see it in top and remember we
can mount zaragoza directories at valencia mount points. This is the reverse
of what is not working.

[root@valencia jna]# exportfs
/home/jna zaragoza.andante.mn.org

which looks correct yet every time we attempt a mount from the client we see
this entry in the server's /var/log/messages:

Re: OT: Recommendations for a TV tuner?

2002-04-02 Thread Ken Kirchner

I picked up an ATI TV Wonder card (not the VE or USB version) not to long
ago and have used it without any problem under Redhat 7.2. I used the
Xawtv package and it seemed fine. The white-balance on the card is pretty
pathetique, but it does the same thing under Windows using the ATI
software, so I know it's not a linux problem. As long as there isnt a lot
of white in the picture, it does a decent job.

I got mine on ebay for around $60 I think, and that was "New in box!"

Oh and it did take a little Xawtv fine-tuning to get it going, but nothing
major.

RE: Problem with permisions in NFS??

2002-04-02 Thread Matthews, John

From what you have written here, I would think you might have a
problem with permissions in regard to who may access your NFS shares. Is
your laptop's name definitely "zaragoza.andante.mn.org"? One idea may be to
do something like this for a quick test:

/home/jna 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.255.0(rw)
That's assuming that your using private ip's of 192.168.1.xxx.

As another person mentioned you need to be running portmap. You can
run
"rpcinfo -p zaragoza" and look for "nfs" and possibly "mountd".
That's what I have running on my own machines when I execute rpcinfo.

Good luck,
John M.

Hmmm...yeah, instead of putting it in the "real" firewall script...OK,
that'll unwrap the complexity in the script. I still have to generate
the rules, but that's OK. Actually, I should just create the if-up.local
and if-down.local scripts... (Dangit, I'd totally forgotten that pppd invokes
these. Alzheimer's must be kicking in...)

Subject: PPP *and* DSL *and* local NIC...

Gentlefolk,

I'm 85% of the way there, but frankly, I have a life these days and
don't want to waste it unless it's helping others solve new problems.
This probably isn't a new one.

I've a RH 6.2 box (yeah, so sue me--it *works* like a rock) with
ipchains.
For(ever) a long time, I've been running it with a local network on
eth0,
and a DSL/cable (depends on when the provider gets weird and I fire
them)
on eth1. The dialup ppp0 has kind of lurked as a legacy that wakes
up periodically when the Internet link dies. I've a nice, survivable
firewall--at least, it's not been cracked that *I* know!--that
originated
with a script generated by http://www.linux-firewall-tools.com/, but
has been hand-edited to death since.

For various personal reasons, I need to run a PPP server to honor
connections from Win9x. No problem--I think--I've figured out the
options that fit my world, and the session establishes and looks
healthy.

The problem is the firewall, and may be routing tables. The firewall
is rejecting everything from the third NIC (ppp); once I get past that,
I figure I'll start hitting grumbles about routing and forwarding.

Before I spend the time to rewrite my firewall script One More Time,
does anyone already have one that handles three NICs in this kind of
configuration?

TIA,

Re: Help controlling spam

2002-04-02 Thread Mike Burger

Mr. Camacho might want to check out his mailserver, or that of his ISP,
because relays.osirusoft.com has them listed as an open relay...just what

RH70 vs RH72 (Sendmail again ! :) )

2002-04-02 Thread Pieter De Wit

Hello Redhat,

What is the diff. between sendmail-8.11.6-4 (RedHat 7.0) and
sendmail-8.11.6-3 (RedHat 7.2) ?

7.2 seems to cause a lot of problems with the auth. ?!?!?

Thanks,

Pieter De Wit
