I am surprised more mail admin's don't just delete or reject them at the
server level before they hit the users mailbox. I never used to do it, and I
just set it up to block a bunch of win related files IE - .bat .exe .pif
.scr, etc. Notified the users, and they can zip them if they need to email
them.

Adding apache to services

2003-04-04 Thread DuSTiN KRySaK

Ok - I just compiled apache and installed the newest one on RH 9. Now with
me being new to Linux and all - I was surprised when I went and ran:

# service httpd start

But it says https is unrecognized.

I can start it fine with:

# httpd -k start

I am just wondering how I would go about adding my HTTPD to my services.

Thanks!

The README seems to only refer to NFS volumes, and such. I am working local
on the machine So the disk is not mounted.. It is just a folder on my
drive. (something like /data/rhcds/d1)

Which means I am using:

# redhat-config-packages --tree /data/rhcds/d1/RedHat/RPMS/

And I still get the error...

Can this app not be used on a local copy of the cd's?

Redhat-config-packages directory path

2003-03-17 Thread DuSTiN KRySaK
Hi there - I have copied all 3 disks of my RH install CD's to my hard
drive Now when using redhat-config-packages, I know you are supposed to
specify "-t" to do the path... Now what I am wondering - where exactly does
the path need to go to? The root of the cd? Right to the RPMS directory?

I have placed mine at:

/root/rh8.i386

Then each disk is in a sub-directory called "d1, d2, d3" respectively.

I tried both the cd root, and the RPMS directory, what else would I have to
do to get this to work?

Thanks!

See - I am looking at ways to switch us from a win network over to ANYTHING

Mac's for the clients. I am just curious what some other people are doing

FSTAB - am I missing something? 1st crack at it...

2003-03-12 Thread DuSTiN KRySaK
Hi there...

I have a 2nd hard drive (IDE) that I am putting into a RH8 box. It has data
on it as well

So I dropped the drive in, and the BIOS config was fine...

So then I tried mounting the drive just to make sure...

# mkdir /mnt/data
# mount -t ext3 /dev/hdb1 /mnt/data

This worked fine. So I unmounted and deleted the dir in the mnt dir.

I then edited my fstab file and added:

/dev/hdb1 /data ext3defaults1 2

So now when I rebooted, I get the error that "data" doesn't exist. Am I
missing something?

Ok, so here are the steps I took

Created an account for FTPin to this site. Made the home folder the same as
the Apache directory. Them modified so that user was locked to their home
folder.

Then I changed the permissions so that user owned the folder, and made the
folder part of the root group.

Granted the owner rwx, as well as the group rwx, and the others just r.

Does anyone see any security concerns with this?

I just now have to disable SSh access for this iser.

Ok - so just creating a user and chrooting him to the dir is considered safe
enough.. Ok cool. And I guess to make sure this user can not SSH in.

Restricted user just for FTP publishing

2003-03-07 Thread DuSTiN KRySaK
Hi there...

I was wondering what is the best way I can restrict a new user just to FTP
publishing. Well read/write/modify only to a certain folder (not even a home
folder). I mean - I assume by default a new user has more access than
that... I just want to lock this user down since FTP is clear text, etc.

How does one restart/stop/start a service from the command line?

I have a desktop reference book of commands, and can't seem to find it in

Also - how would one see the services available on the command line and
their current status (start/stopped)?

Thanks!

I'm just going to throw it in a shell script and get cron to run it nightly.

Re: Compile modules for Apache V2

2003-01-30 Thread DuSTiN KRySaK
Ok, so I tried compiling Apache this evening, and I never got any errors,
BUT It seems as though it has installed into the root of the drive,
There are all these files there now like... "httpd.conf" and
"httpd-2.0.40-pod.patch", etc etc

And at the command line when I run /usr/bin/httpd -V it still shows as being
V 2.0.40 instead of V 2.0.44...

What I ran for commands to create the package were...

./configure --enable-module=so --enable-ssl --with-layout=RedHat

I was hoping this wopuld compile and install over my previous version of
Apache...

Then I ran:

make

then:

make install

Can anyone see where I went wrong? I am just trying to upgrade my Apach
install from 2.0.40 to 2.0.44 with all the same options and modules in the
same location And to have the GUI work too.

Thanks in advance!

2003-01-28 Thread DuSTiN KRySaK
To add to my questions, is there an easy way to simply update an existing
apache install to a newer version Keeping all the same install
locations, and modules that were compiled in your previous version?

I am having a hard time trying to figure out this compiling stuff.
So I am hoping their is an easier way to get this installed.

Thanks!!!

Compile modules for Apache V2

2003-01-28 Thread DuSTiN KRySaK
Hi there, I need to compile Apache again so that I can hopefully get
coldfusion mx to work with my version of redhat (V8)... At any rate, I am
pretty new to Linux, and I was wondering which Apache modules I should
include when I compile apache? I know it all depends on what I want my
server to be able to do... I just want to know what is considered "the
norm".

Also, has anyone heard when redhat was going to put an RPM up for Apache
2.0.41 or above? That is the version I need, and since the RPM is at
2.0.40... Well this is why I need to compile.

Anyone here running coldfusion MX on redhat 8? Someone that remembers the
exact steps they took to get it to function?

Apache 2.041or above RPM's?

2003-01-23 Thread DuSTiN KRySaK
Does anyone know if there is a RPM anywhere for Apache 2.0.41 or above? I
need it for coldfusion to work on my redhat 8 system. But since I am brand
to linux ,and have been reading, etc I still prefer the RPM at this
point. On the redhat FTP, the newest they seem to have is 2.0.40.

And if there are any people running Coldfusion MX on redhat 8, I would like
to talk to you off list if possible.

Thanks!!

Dustin
