Re: partition check error at boot time

2003-10-13 Thread Daniel Tan
if u use -Uvh, then if your new kernel installation is having problems, you
will not be able to boot back to your previous kernel.

using -U typically removes your old kernel files and install the new kernel
files.will be installed even if the package is not install in the system

using -F is almost identical to upgrading except when the package specified
on the command line is not already installed on the system.the package will
be ignored if not already installed.

For us newbies, why wouldn't you use -Uvh?

up2date seems to handle this stuff pretty gracefully, so I've not messed w/
just changing the kernel.

hello:

i am having a real difficulty booting one of my systems. i installed the
latest kernel the rh8.0 system: kernel-2.4.20-20.8.i386.rpm. i don't know if
this had anything to do with the problem or not. at any rate, after doing an
upgrade of the kernel (rpm -Fvh kernel-2.4.20-20.8.i386.rpm), i rebooted.
now, a most mysterious thing is happening. during boot, i get the following
message

attached scsi removable disk sda at scsi 0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0

sda status = 1, message = 0, host 0, driver 08

(other stuff unrelated)
kernel panic

i can boot up using the cdrom to get to "linux rescue; chroot
/mnt/sysimage."
everything appears ok. if i boot up to "linux rescue" and skip mounting the
disks, i can do a sfdisk -V /dev/sda. the result indicates the
disk/partition

any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Printer Question

2003-10-09 Thread Daniel G. Pruitt
Hi,

I'm having a little problem setting up print queues. I can't seem to
get Media Source as an option for Driver Options.

Details: RedHat 9.0, LPRng 3.8.19-3.1, redhat-config-printer-gui.

The printer I'm setting up is a Tektronix Phaser 850. I need to set
up a queue using Tray 2 for transparencies, but the postscript driver
doesn't seem to include media source as an option. (this used to
work in RedHat 7.1)...

Thanks for any help.

X Randomly fails to load

2003-09-17 Thread Daniel Arvesen
Hello,

Occasionally on my laptop X will randomly fail to load whenever I boot
Linux. It seems to be random, but it's almost always guarenteed to boot
the next time. When it fails to load X, the computer just freezes and
the only way I can turn off the computer is to hold down the power
button. No key combinations work (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, Ctrl+Alt+Delete).

Does anyone know what is going on and/or how to fix it?

My laptop is an IBM Thinkpad R32 and I'm running RedHat 9

Re: SATA and RH 9 Woes

2003-09-13 Thread M Daniel R M
The only thing I can say about it it's that I've installed the RH9
distro into a Gigabyte 8INXP motherboard with an 120GB S-ATA HD too, but
had no problems. That was about 2 or 3 months ago. The first kernel
included on it was 2.4.20-8; booting up I could always see a line that
said something about Serial ATA was OK..., recognized or so on...
I've had another problems (I'm very very newbie in Linux), but nothing
related with your comment. However, I couldn't install the SuSE Linux
8.2 and I wasn't able to understand why one distro YES and another NO if
the kernels were the same or very very similar, and these two distros
were built and launched about at the same time. Maybe SuSe forgot to
include a SATA support module? It was disappointing, but I've aswell
forgotten that point...
I only can say you for check your BIOS settings, especially all those
related with SATA or RAID issues.
I hope someone can help better,
Good luck.

[snip]

All of these logfile entries look to be DDNS updates that were rejected by
your DNS server.

1) Are your zone definitions configured to allow DDNS update (allow-update)
requests from dhcp clients?

2) Is your DHCP server configured to send DDNS updates (nsupdate) requests
to your named server?

3) If none of the above, then you probably have some W2K or XP systems
sending a DDNS update request that needs to be disabled if you don't plan on
implementing DDNS. See windows tcp/ip->dns settings.

recovering from corrputed glibc package install

2003-08-22 Thread Daniel Rubin
I temporarily downgraded glibc rpm's to install oracle
on RedHat 9 using
this command:
rpm -Uvh --force glibc-2.3.2-5.i686.rpm
glibc-common-2.3.2-5.i386.rpm
glibc-devel-2.3.2-5.i386.rpm

which completed without error; and later, I
re-upgraded the packages
with this command:
rpm -Uvh glibc-2.3.2-11.9.i686.rpm
glibc-common-2.3.2-11.9.i386.rpm
glibc-devel-2.3.2-11.9.i386.rpm

I've since learned that doing this was a very bad
thing, and that I should
have done rpm -e for all these packages and then rpm
-i. But in the meantime,
I'd like some help recovering from the current mess.
For these packages, there
are now parts of both versions present:

rpm -e glibc, shows multiple packages:
error: "glibc" specifies multiple packages

rpm -qv shows two packages for glibc:
# rpm -qv glibc
glibc-2.3.2-5
glibc-2.3.2-11.9

and it looks like glibc is messed up:
# rpm -V glibc
Unsatisfied dependencies for glibc-2.3.2-5:
glibc-common = 2.3.2-5
...T c /etc/rpc
S.5T /lib/i686/libc-2.3.2.so
S.5T /lib/i686/libm-2.3.2.so

So the question is how best to clean up the failed
glibc install?
Do I do
rpm -e glibc-2.3.2-5
rpm -e glibc-2.3.2-11.9
and then
rpm -i glibc-2.3.2-11.9?

What if these fail, and can I be sure no stray files
left behind?

Thanks

Oddly enough, I have that same problem earlier today.

Basically, make sure that you account for the reverse of each domain.
Also, in the exportfs file, the server name you are putting in should be
the client or the server that is going to mount the file system on (in
this, A). Like so:

On server A -
/backup
-rw=10.0.81.115:serverb.net,anon=0,root=10.0.81.115:serverb.net,access=10.0.
81.115:serverb.net

On server B -

mount servera:/backup /mnt/backup (it will assume that it is a remote
server with that format).

I assume that you have the original fstab on the machine somewhere? You
may have to remount the / fs since it is mounted read only in some
circumstances.

mount / -o remount rw

should be close and you can cp the old fstab

In order to compile another app properly, I now have to "install a
kernel source tree and symlink it to /usr/src/linux". So, I'm looking
for info on installing a kernel source tree that corresponds to this new
kernel and how to create a symbolic link to it. Any advice would be
much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

what are you using to edit it?

Can you save a file at all?

echo "test text" > /etc/testfile

what are the perms on /etc/fstab

ls -l /etc/fstab

2)on serverB, enabled nfs too(not sure right way or not), tried mount -t nfs
serverA:/ /mnt/local (there is a local dir in there)

fstab

2003-08-14 Thread Daniel Tan
hi,
i did a very stupid mistake in overwriting fstab in /etc with another one
(another machine running raid 1)...now i reboot and cant boot up...can enter
to repair filesystem but i can seem to overwrite the fstab manuallyit
doesnt give me...how do i put back the previous fstab?

ps: i am creating this server as a replicate of the other server in config
except raid. the reason why i copy the fstab over is because i m plain lazy
to edit the file manually to enable quota for 1 filesystem. DOH!

none on /proc type proc (rw)
see there is rw in there but am not able to write anything on /, editing a

Sorry the syntax is wrong

try

mount -n / -o remount,rw

if still no worky

It may be that it is not mounted at all I guess. Since I have never been
where you are I don't know for sure. How did you get to a command
prompt? What messages are there?

I am assuming that the / filesystem is mounted since you could at least
get to a single user command prompt. I believe the kernel gets the root
file system information from the boot loader so it should be mounted
even without an fstab but the mount command wants to look in fstab to
translate the mountpoints (/) to a device (/dev/hda2)

what does

mount

return?

RE: Change computer name on Redhat

2003-08-14 Thread Daniel Donoghue
Thanks Sean! It's interesting to me: I had tried editing those files
twice before in k-edit or something and they would appear to change
until a reboot, so this time I did it in the vi editor before starting
an x-session and it worked! I'm not sure what the difference would be if
the permissions&read-only stuff was ok in k-edit but in any case thanks
for the help.

Hi Daniel,

Take a look at the /etc/sysconfig/network file. You may also
have to update your /etc/hosts file afterward.

Cheers,

This would be easier for someone else to follow if you would not top
post.

Well since there is no swap enabled lets enable some. I have never done
this without an fstab but the manpage for swapon seems to indicate that

swapon /dev/whatever

should work.

so assumming that your swap partition is the same as root, try

fdisk -l /dev/sda

and see which partition is swap and use that in the above swapon
command.

Oddly enough, I have that same problem earlier today.

Basically, make sure that you account for the reverse of each domain.
Also, in the exportfs file, the server name you are putting in should be
the client or the server that is going to mount the file system on (in
this, A). Like so:

On server A -
/backup
-rw=10.0.81.115:serverb.net,anon=0,root=10.0.81.115:serverb.net,access=10.0.
81.115:serverb.net

On server B -

mount servera:/backup /mnt/backup (it will assume that it is a remote
server with that format).

You want the package kernel-source-2.4.20-19.8.i386.rpm and you can find
it in the ./i386 directory at the same place where you obtained your new
kernel package. In case you used an automatic tool to apply the kernel
updates, you just need to update the package named "kernel-source", too.

Change computer name on Redhat

I'm wondering if there's a way to permanently change the computer's name
(using Redhat 8). If I change the name by editing the etc/hosts file,
or through the network config settings, or with the hostname command, it
only changes the name for the next x-session; when I reboot or logout
it goes back to a default localhost.localdomain. Can I make a change to
this name that will be permanent? Thanks in advance.

I hoped I did not need to resort to the kernel compilation stuff. I
thought the stock kernel does have APM, but it's certainly sub-optimal.

Is there a tool that makes an rpm package from the custom-compiled
kernel? I used to do it on debian and it worked really well.

Re: Laptops?

2003-07-28 Thread Daniel Dui
Works fine on my Dell latitude C600. The only problem is that the
battery life with linux is not nearly as long as under windows xp.
AFAIK, this problem is common to all laptops because Dell, Toshiba, IBM,
Compaq, and the rest seem make quite good power management drivers for
windows, but not for Linux.

If anyone knows how to get battery life on linux as good as it is on win
xp please let us know.

192.168.0.0 is the network number and cannot be used as an address. you
need to use 192.168.0.1 or above.

Have you checked your error.log? check /var/log/httpd/

That'll tell you what the problem is.

Re: RH9 home networking

2003-07-09 Thread Daniel Dui
Thanks to John and all the others who replied.

Beside getting my home network up and running I was curious to find out
if RH's usability was as bad as I thought for this sort of things.
Unfortunately it is.

In conclusion: I am going to have to RTFM because I don't want to use
windows, I want the computer to be accessible from the outside, and I
don't want to buy more hardware.

In windows any semi-idiot can make a little home network just by
clicking on "share internet connection" in the network setup. The bad
thing is that without installing a decent firewall (and paying for it)
the computer has no security and it is completely exposed to viruses and
attacks of all kinds.

I can not think of any good reasons why in Linux it should not be
possible to set up a simple network as easily as in windows and have
also good security.

I have seen many small offices with such insecure windows networks
infested by viruses.

RH folks I hope you are reading.

numlock broken in X

2003-07-04 Thread Daniel Tams
Once I log in through GDM, my numlock no longer works. meaning the light
is off and doesn't change by pressing the numlock key, yet pressing the
numpad keys produces numbers, i.e. the numlock is permanently on. This
behaviour starts as soon as I login with GDM. Before I log in, it works
fine. I can get the numlock to work again, after having logged into X
with GDM, by changing the keyboard mapping with setxkbmap(1) or System
Settings|Keyboard. Then the numlock will work until I log out of X and
back in again. The broken numlock has the effect that I can't switch to a
console with ctrl-alt-f1 for example. It just doesn't work, until I fix
the numlock with setxkbmap(1), that is. My keyboard is a Danish keyboard
with 113 keys in all, including 2 Windows start menu keys, 1 Windows
context-menu key and a wake-up, sleep and power key, respectively.

I just want to check here on the mailing list before I report it to
bugzilla.redhat.com.

Any hints appreciated,
- Daniel

RH9 home networking

2003-07-03 Thread Daniel Dui
Here is my problem:

I have a RH9 box with two network cards. One network card connects to a
cable modem and the other to a hub. I would like to share the Internet
connection with other computers in the house.

I was hoping to find a "share connection" tick box somewhere in the
network configuration options, but I could not.

I had a look at various howtos, but they look much more complicated than
they should be. All I am trying to do is set up a little home network! I
am surprised that still there is not a simple and easy way to do a
simple and easy thing in RH9.

Can anyone provide any clue?

many thanks

No go … anybody got any

I am running RedHat 9, latest kernel installed.
the card is PCMCIA, using kernel-pcmcia-cs

Thanks !

Sorry it took so long to get back. I've been out of the office. There is
the problem though. You are trying to install php-mysql version 4.2.2-8.0.7
on top of the installed php version 4.2.2-8.0.5. Log onto one of the mirror
ftp sites for redhat and go to the folder that has the newer php-mysql
4.2.2-8.0.7 and download php* so you get every php package that is
version …8.0.7. Then with them all in the same folder do an rpm -Uvh php*
and it will upgrade them. It may complain that it won't do php-mysql since
you are asking for an upgrade. If it does then when it is done you will be
able to then do an rpm -ivh php-mysql… since the php version would now
match the php-mysql.

I hope that makes since. By the way, if you use ncftp to connect to the
mirror redhat site, when you get to the RPMS folder you want to download
from, the command get php* will download them all at once.

beginning to end. Works fine now. Thanks Bill-Larry-Michael.

I think you are seeing the db locking error. Try this:

# rm /var/lib/rpm/__db*
# rpm --rebuilddb

Then retry the commands I gave you. This will probably get rid of these
errors.

2003-06-16 Thread Daniel R. Hansen
Sorry about the winmail.dat files. I wasn't aware that that was happening
(I don't see them when my own list messages come back to me). A quick Web
search told me that I needed to configure MS Outlook to send in HTML or
plain text format rather than RTF, and I've done that. Please let me know
if your're still seeing them.

And you were told that php-4.2.2-8.0.7 is required by
php-mysql-4.2.2-8.0.7.i386.rpm.

Pay attention to the full version numbers!

So, either you get php-mysql-4.2.2-8.0.5.i386.rpm or you
upgrade your PHP package to version 4.2.2-8.0.7.

Also, please configure your mail program to not flood the list with
superfluous and huge winmail.dat files. You and Larry Brown posted
26-30 KiB huge messages to the list, each containing many
superfluous quotes and winmail.dat attachments. By doing that you
fill up the digests pretty easily and will make many friends among
digest subscribers.

Consider reading something about Netiquette.

libmysqlclient.so.10 is provided by mysql-client. Do you have that loaded?

Try this:

rpm -qa|grep mysql

and

rpm -qa|grep php

Let us know what is loaded.

mysql 3.23.56 and rh7.3 - Table 'mysql.host' doesn't exist

2003-06-16 Thread Nogradi Daniel
Hi!

I have redhat 7.3 with the mysql packages that came with it.
Since RHSA-2003:093-14 came out I upgraded mysql with

mysql-3.23.56-1.73.i386.rpm
mysql-devel-3.23.56-1.73.i386.rpm
mysql-server-3.23.56-1.73.i386.rpm

When I try to start mysqld I get the following error message
in the log:

Table 'mysql.host' doesn't exist.

After googling around a bit and looking at the mysql and
redhat lists I found that this is well-known problem so I
didn't panic and indeed found several useful suggestions:

1. The path to the basedir and/or datadir may not be set
properly but I did set them properly in /etc/my.cnf (the
original that came with rh7.3 and the update were incorrect).

2. The privilages and/or ownership of the basedir and/or
datadir are not set properly but I also did that, even
setting it to 777 and ownership given to user mysql. I
(would :)) use user mysql to run mysqld.

3. Mysqld is complaining about innodb but since I don't need
it I give the option --skip-innodb to mysqld and this sorts
all innodb issues out.

4. I successfully ran mysql_install_db and the files are there.

After all this the bloody error message is still there and
mysqld wouldn't start!

Anyone has an idea?

A related question: I thought about installing the RPM from
mysql.com instead of the one provided by redhat. Since the
RPM from redhat doesn't seem to be of the same nature as the
one from mysql.com I'm not sure if I can simply do rpm -Fvh
 on top of the package
from redhat. Do you have any comments on this?

I would be very grateful for any help, thanks,

Daniel

Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() (it's baaaack...)

2003-06-15 Thread Daniel R. Hansen
This is driving me buggy...

I just upgraded to RH 8 which included an Apache 2.0 update.

PHP and MySQL work OK independently, but an attempt to do a mysql_connect
returns a "Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect()"

I tried to install php-mysql-4.2.2-8.0.7.i386.rpm but am getting:

warning: php-mysql-4.2.2-8.0.7.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID

error: Failed dependencies:
php = 4.2.2-8.0.7 is needed by php-mysql-4.2.2-8.0.7

Attempts to install the client RPM return messages that it's already
installed.

***I saw a message in the archive about this, but could not locate a
resolution.

phpinfo dump follows.

file manager super user mode RH9

2003-06-15 Thread Daniel Anderson
This is an upgrade from Redhat 8 to 9. File manager super user mode will
open and then disappear after about one second. It worked properly with
Redhat 8. All updates except the kernel have been applied. Any
suggestions?
Thanks,
Dan

Re: Linux desktop speed...

2003-06-11 Thread Daniel Dui
I mostly agree. In Windows many libraries are loaded already, that's why
IE starts up so quickly. Same goes for other apps.

X has a client-server architecture that makes is very flexible but also
slower than the Windows GUI. Look at how clunky Nautilus is.

Open Office is a hog. It uses a ridiculous amount of memory is slow it
is less usable than MS Office and less integrated. I don't like it but
there is too much choice for Linux especially for presentation.

I agree I'd like more work on speed optimisation, but that was more of
an issue some time ago. Now computer a fast and cheap. After all you are
comparing the time it takes to an application to start. Once it has
started it is about as fast as it is on Windows, or at least not
noticeably slower.

Personally, I would like to see more work on _usability_ (not just
pretty icons!). On this front Windows and Mac are still ahead.

There was much rumour about "desktop Linux" 3 or 4 years ago when
Caldera, Mandrake, Corel, RedHat, and others made distributions that
were supposed to be targeted to the non-geeky user. Now most of these
distributions are pretty much dead. And RedHat is selling Linux as an OS
for servers and technical workstations (i.e. geek's PCs) rather than for
PC for anyone (like the iMac).

Sorry I did actually do a "make install" but no "make modules_install".
Is "make modules_install" necessary in order to prevent "make install"
from failing or should they be independent?

Thanks

recompiling RH9 with SCSI driver

2003-06-06 Thread Daniel Sheltraw
Hello RH list

I have a Dell Precision 350 machine and lspci tells me this about
my SCSI controller:

02:07.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 (rev 07)
02:07.1 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 (rev 07)

I am trying to recompile my kernel but after when doing a "make install"
i get the folloeing error message:

sh -x ./install.sh 2.4.20-rthal5 bzImage /usr/src/linux-2.4.20/System.map ""
+ '[' -x /root/bin/installkernel ']'
+ '[' -x /sbin/installkernel ']'
+ exec /sbin/installkernel 2.4.20-rthal5 bzImage
/usr/src/linux-2.4.20/System.map ''
No module mptbase found for kernel 2.4.20-rthal5
mkinitrd failed
make[1]: *** [install] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.20/arch/i386/boot'
make: *** [install] Error 2

There does not exist a /lib/modules directory for my new modules
and it looks like "make install" can't find the mptbase driver.
Does any one know how to fix this?

Thanks a bunch,
Daniel

Fetchmail, daemon or cron?

2003-06-06 Thread Daniel A. Chartrand
I have created a /home/someuser/.fetchmailrc file.

QUESTION: In Redhat 9, is there a Daemon that automatically checks for mail or
do i need to do a Cron job?

I would like the mail to be checked every few minutes. If there is a Daemon for
fetchmail that accomplishes what i need, how can i verify that it is working and
what is the interval of checks? If not, what are some best practices for Cron?

Thanks.

What is Rawhide anyway? I was apprehensive about installing it, but i noticed

for some version of Redhat Linux i was unaware of... but which version?

The console says

After starting X and opening an xterm window I have a normal

Re: xterm problem and kernel build

I am doing a RTAI (hard-real time executive) patch and build.
The problem is that I started from scratch building the .config
file since the one in /boot was garbage after my initial RH9
install. I have been learning as I go what must be in the kernel
and what may not. Obviously I have left something out. I am getting
a message when booting:

fs types devpts not supported by kernel

AFAIK this is related to USB which I have not enabled and do not
need in this kernel. Am I correct about this message?

I strongly doubt that there are any problems with the RTAI
patch since many others have performed the patch on the
same kernel as I without this problem.

Re: usbaudio + sb live! pci issues

2003-05-31 Thread Daniel A. Chartrand
To be honest, i am running the Linux in question on a dual partition.
I do most of my sound in another OS.

I just wanted to know if i could resolve the detection of my USB Audio
(15 times for the same card! incorrect) and manually assign cards on the
fly in Redhat.

My setup is not standard, it's very low budget and unconventional, i
wish i had the kind of setup your customers have... but what i have is
good enough.

As for memories... (a tear in the eye!)

There is no Fast Tracker for Linux, but there is Skale for Linux in
"alpha" (email the author, he hasn't released the linux version to the
public.) http://www.skale.org/ - Also, Renoise has promised that a Linux
version is on the horizon. http://www.renoise.com/ - and there are
several trackers available for linux, as well as many other sound apps -
check out http://www.linuxsound.at/

Thank you for your time.

OK. I just enabled CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RAM and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD
in the kernel config file and rebuilt the kernel. Now I am
getting a repeated (again and again) message

modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-1

As I mentioned before the /boot/config file was garbage on my
RH9 install and I am having to go through the .config file
carefully now.

Re: usbaudio + sb live! pci issues

2003-05-30 Thread Daniel A. Chartrand

> But seriously, I HAVE to ask, why do you have two? What is the point?

One (SB Live!) Has a built in DSP, is SoundFont (midi) Compatible, and
works better with old software (fasttracker). The other (Audiophile USB)
has superior quality recording and playback capabilities.

I plug them both in a mixer (Behringer Eurorack UB802) to playback
record from each other (softsynth) and also to record instruments
(guitar, bass) in one sound card while using the other to listen to a
drum track (metronome) in a set of headphones.

Duh!

Your snide comment didn't solve my problem, however... any other insight
you'd like to bring to the discussion?

boot problem on MSI board

2003-05-29 Thread Daniel Sheltraw
Hello Redhat list

I am having a problem building a new kernel for a MSI 845E Max
Motherboard. I am running RH9.0 and rebuilding a 2.4.20 kernel.

The problem appears to be with the HDD/CD-ROM controller (an
ICH4 on an Intel 845E chipset) of the IDE hard-drive (WD 40GB
IDE/7200). When I boot my newly built kernel I get a kernel
panic with the following lines:

VFS: Cannot open root device "LABEL=/" or 00:00
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:00

My old /etc/lilo.conf file (which worked fine) had the
following line in it (as does the image section for my new
kernel):

  append = "hdc=ide-scsi root=LABEL=/"

I am not familiar with what this line is doing. Also I do not
have a good .config file to work with so I am not at all sure
of my initial configuration of the IDE and SCSI parts of the
kernel (the config file in /boot was garbage on my system).

Can you please help me with understanding what that line in
lilo.conf is about? If you have this board I could sure use
a sample .config file as well. If you don't any advice is
appreciated on configuring the IDE SCSI sections.

Thank you,
Daniel

uff.

I can't seem to get rid of the error in the left panel of squirrelmail:
ERROR: Could not complete request. Query: CREATE "INBOX.Sent" Reason

I have tried every option on the squirrelmail homepage but nothing
works. I tried manually creating the directories, but still get the
same error. I was using the rpm version and was getting the same thing.
I erased the rpm and used the tarball from squirrelmail but I get the
same error.

I'd appreciate some help on this as I have no idea what else to do.

Would you happen to know where I could download binaries for a
Pentium 4 machine? I did not see the binaries for this ubiquitous
machine on the binaries page of the GNU GCC site. I have never
compiled a compiler and do not know if GCC 3.2 will compile GCC 2.95.

Yes I saw that compat package in RH8.0 (and RH9.0) but the README
file said GCC 2.96. So am I to understand that the folks and
RH included GCC 2.96 rather than 2.95 despite the known problems.
Or am I missing something in your .

The reason for my initial question about the GCC 3.2 compiler and
a compiler fit for kernel work is that a remembered the problem
with GCC 2.96. I am patching a 2.4.20 kernel with the RTAI
real-time executive patch. The latest RTAI patch says in a README
file that the GCC 3.2 compiler gives lots of scarey warnings
when used to do the compile and I would rather avoid this problem
despite the fact that the build is reported to work. So, recalling
that in the Redhat 7.2 there was another compiler besides the
2.96, I was wondering if RedHat 8.0 contains a 2.95.3 compiler
somewhere which can be installed. My understanding is that 2.95
is still the "official" compiler for kernel work.

basic keyboard commands for Sendmail. This would
really help me out.

Can anyone recommend any websites for this?

problems with rh8

2003-03-17 Thread Daniel Tan
hi all,
encountered quite a few things with rh8
really can't figure out that's why need to post to the list again

problem 1) tried using neat to configure certain things, get error msg once
click on ok or apply. can't save any changes

problem 2) securitylevel or gnome-lokkit does not seems to be working. after
setting some rules in securitylevel, i click on it again then i got back the
setting to high which i had change. why is it not saving anything i change?

problem 3) i am getting these errors after i change the sendmail.cf file

but now using rh 8.0 with the latest sendmail package 8.12.8

Re: Apache2 + mod_auth_ldap

2003-03-14 Thread Daniel Brad Holder

Ok, I got it to work by adding

Base_DN "cn=Users, dc=MyDomain, dc=com"

and changing
UID_Attr uid to UID_Attr cn

So now I can authenticate via the Full Name of the user. How do I change
that to username/logon name?

Re: Apache2 + mod_auth_ldap

2003-03-14 Thread Daniel Brad Holder
What is webmin?

Here is the part of httpd.conf concerning the ldap authentication:

Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride none
order allow, deny
AuthName "KEEP OUT!"
AuthType Basic
LDAP_Server www.mydomain.com
LDAP_Port 389
Bind_DN "cn=administrator, cn=Users, dc=MyDomain, dc=com"
Bind_Pass "heh"
UID_Attr uid
require valid-user

I think it binds to the ldap server correctly as I don't get a bind error
in error_log but I'm not sure how to set up the actual authentication
part. Any pointers?

AW: Can't send email with RH 8.0, sendmail-8.12.8-1.80 (standardconfig)

2003-03-14 Thread Daniel Paul
Yes, I am sure that NO sendmail daemon is running on the other
server. And inetd/xinetd isn't even started, so it can definitely
not call the sendmail program.

By the way, when /etc/init.d/sendmail is executed, it starts TWO
programs: sendmail and sm-client. What is the second one? Maybe
this is the problem? Someone at RedHat.com must know this, I think,
so if someone reads it...

Now I want to summarize a working and a NOT working environment
(just for those who asked me about it):

The following config is working:
(OurLocalDomain.de is our local (not internet) domain with
192.168.1.x addresses)

RedHat 7.1, sendmail-8.11.6, daemon not running, sendmail.mc reads
as follows (and is of course compiled that way):

DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')
dnl FEATURE(`accept_unresolvable_domains')dnl
dnl FEATURE(`relay_based_on_MX')dnl
MAILER(smtp)dnl
MAILER(procmail)dnl
CwOurLocalDomain.de

access reads as follows (standard, I think):

localhost.localdomain RELAY
localhost RELAY
127.0.0.1 RELAY

All other files (virtusertable, domaintable, local-host-names,
mailertable) are empty.

Again: this config is working properly, I can send email to
local and (as there is an alias root -> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
in aliases) send email to our real mail exchanging server.

Now the following config is NOT working:

RedHat 8.0, sendmail-8.12.8, daemon not running, sendmail.mc/cf
as follows (I changed it like the one above and recompiled):

I have included everything which is not like the above redhat 7.1
config.

define(`confTRUSTED_USER', `smmsp')dnl
define(`confTO_IDENT', `0')dnl
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')dnl
LOCAL_DOMAIN(`localhost.localdomain')dnl
dnl FEATURE(`accept_unresolvable_domains')dnl
dnl FEATURE(`relay_based_on_MX')dnl
MAILER(smtp)dnl
MAILER(procmail)dnl
CwOurLocalDomain.de

Access is the same as on the 7.1 box, all other files are
also empty.

Bye

Daniel

I can't speak of behalf of redhat, but personally I don't see how programs
like cronjobs, mail, etc... could send an e-mail without an MTA running (at
least listening) on the box.

Are you sure your previous RH systems were not configured to have sendmail
run under xinetd instead of as a daemon???

Install apt-get-rpm, see:

For a mini tutorial. Then at the prompt type:

apt-get install mplayer

This will install mplayer in [Gnome MENU -> Extras -> Sound & Video].

PS: If your system didn't set up the DVD device automagically, you might
want to symlink /dev/dvd -> /dev/cdrom

Hope this helps.

Sony Clie PEG-SL10/U & Gnome-Pilot

2003-03-13 Thread Daniel A. Chartrand

I would like to get the Sony Clie PEG-SL10/U PDA to work with Gnome-Pilot.

When i use the Redhat Hardware Browser while doing a hotsync, It detects "Palm, Inc. Palm Hanheld" under "System Devices"

However, Gnome-Pilot does not seem to accept the hotsync in question. (tried many variations in the wizard option)

Anyone have a solution?

AW: Can't send email with RH 8.0, sendmail-8.12.8-1.80 (standardconfig)

2003-03-13 Thread Daniel Paul
Is there some change in the sendmail-version delivered with
RedHat 8 (or the delivered sendmail-config) that does NOT allow
to send mail from local server via standard MUA/MTA-sendonly
(not MTA-receive) config anymore???

In earlier versions it was possible to send email without starting
the sendmail daemon. I don't want to have a running copy of
the sendmail daemon on each of my linux machines, even if it's
only listening on the loopback interface.

So, my question is: Did the redhat people change something which requires
starting the server from 7.x to 8.0 (and if yes: what) or didn't they?

Bye,

Daniel

Well,by default sendmail only listens on localhost. Have you changed
this? You said you haven't changed the standard cf file so I assume not.
You shouldn't change the cf file anyway. Rather, in /etc/mail look for
the sendmail.mc file. There is a line that must be commented out for
sendmail to listen on an external port:
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')dnl
Comment that line out with dnl like so:
dnl DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')dnl
and restart sendmail.
As far as having sendmail daemon on each box, just keep in mind that
sendmail is used to send root system email as well. It's not really
hurting much for it to run on those boxes and just listen on the default
127.0.0.1.

hi all,
configured my rh8.0 with raid1 and grub as boot loader but upon
booting, stuck at LI.
seems like LILO not loading properly due to incorrect config of my /boot or
/?

raid 1 - md0 /boot
raid 1 - md1 /home
raid 1 - md2 /var
raid 1 - md3 /

in boot loader config screen, the statement at the top says using md0 as the
boot loader
but in the box below, loading red hat linux from /dev/md3 ? i think the
problem lies somewhere here.

i went to red hat website but saw that need to click on advance boot loader
options but there's only 1 option for me and by default is already chosen.
It is for RAID purposes...maybe i installed RAID incorrectly?

Anyone here encountered this before for RAID?
