It's not so much that I'm after bleeding edge features. I maintain
the kickstart trees for all the redhat versions, and I'm doing
testing and development on plenty of other assorted 'stuff'. I could
get myself a head start on getting things like these to work with 8.0
if I even just had the beta, which, if nothing else, could give me an
early heads up to things like, say, the installkernel issue that came
up in 7.2, changes in the passwd/shadow/groups files, changes to
anaconda, etc.

I'm developing with Python, php, and bits and pieces of other stuff
as well. Seeing the versions of packages in a full install of the
beta will allow me to prepare for the final version a little better.
I have enough on my plate without answering 25 emails a day asking
when 8.0 will be available, or when our dept. servers will move to
it, and why does it take so long, etc (they don't really get
kickstart - and ours is fairly complex).

So my need is really just to see what's coming up so I can plan and
begin my various processes - not so I can say 'I'm hardcore'.
Everyone already knows that :-P j/k

I believe I saw support for the Sandisk is the 2.4.17 kernel. Don't
know how experimental it is or not, but you might want to check it out.
If you need help with it I'm sure people on this list could help you.

IMHO, in terms of real-world computing, it's far more important to be
stable, reliable, and well-tasked than to be on the edge for the edge's
sake. but at the same time I can understand the slobbering for the next
big number. here's hoping that the "Slashdot First Post" attitude never
seeps into enterprise level system administrators.

nice plug for the good folks in NC, there.

Actually I was just thinking that I probably don't really need to upgrade
to the next version either; usually I do, but my system is more than
stable and suiting my needs.

The only thing that seems appealing for a distribution to have is better
USB support so that I can have an easier time getting my scanner & smart
media reader to work. Some of the new distributions have a utility for
helping with scanner setup, but I know if I played around with things
enough, I could get my Epson 1200u to work with my Red Hat 7.2. The smart
media reader from SanDisk, I dunno about that one though.

Now that would be a great thing for Linux to have, true USB plug & play.
Anyways, I digress.

As rawhide is using a glibc-2.3-pre developement version and a snapshot of
gcc 3.1 I'd say that there is a major change in the components!

Trond I've been on this list a long time and I swear that response from you

I'm right aren't I?

If not it should be!

The real question is why are people so anxious to get to the higher number?
That's the one that's always gotten me.

I've decided - screw you all - I'm creating a new Linux distribution called
'BuggerThis Linux - Version: Infinity'

Mind you I may have to charge a little to let you all be so
advanced..

Red Hat's major version numbers have historically been based on binary
compatibility. So as soon as they're comfortable with GCC 3.0 I would
suspect that they will release an 8.0

Of course. Only then will they be able to effectively compete with
the Mac. Of course, with Windows already at 2002, there's still a lot
of catching up to do. ;-)

Cracks me up every time I see a "New! Faster!" 'version' of AOL ...
Platinum, now, is it? Especially with that sweet 1000 hours free deal
they've got going on. It's only good for 45 days. To fully realize
the benefits of this generous offer, you'd have to be dialed up for
over 22 hours a day.

What? I'm OT again? Sorry ...
