You're, of course, right. Although, for a list like this, I think stripping
attachments far outweighs not doing so. Thanks for the reply.

You'll have no problem unless you receive it in wine or vmware or
win4lin and opened the attachment using Express Outhouse or simply
Outhouse. If any or all of that doesn't apply, no sweat.

Since it's very unlikely that you match those conditions, you shouldn't
have to worry about it at all.

2001-12-12 Thread Gary Stainburn

I think that this thread is starting to drift OT and is quickly going nowhere.

However, I thought I had to reply to this one.

My Win98 box is also purely for games - I fly FS2K on-line and do a bit of
air-traffic controlling too. While I don't care about the security of this
box, I DO care whether anyone else attacks my box with the potential to use
it as a launchpad to attack other boxes. As well as being a socially
responsible person, I don't see why I should share the bandwidth that I pay
for with anyone else.

For this reason, I run Norton AV and Norton Personal Firewall that came with
my m/board. Even if they hadn't come free, I'd have got some protection.

The server doesn't strip attachments. There are multiple reasons on why
it should strip them and there are equally the same number of reasons why
it shouldn't strip them. I unfortunately can't find the origional message

Yes, as a necessary evil, Windoze is on my two other boxes. One box is my
multimedia unit, using PhotoShop, Premiere, Illustrator, etc., to produce stuff
for my web site. The other is my DVD rendering unit. It has a DVD-R burner.
Both are connected to the net via the Linux box. Nothing on the outside can
get to them and the Linux box handles all my e-mail. It is connected to
the net via a static IP DSL line.

MailScanner is a superb program. It is trivial to install, needs no
config changes to sendmail, and it works. MailScanner is currently
running on my home server and it found the recent virus sent to this
mailing list.

It uninfected the attachment, sent me a message what it had done, and sent
a message to the Postmaster (me!). Before that it found some other
attachments from another list and quarintened them. What more could I
ask...

Well, there is one thing. MailScanner depends on the use of a commerical
virus package to operate properly. Unfortunately, the McAfee or Sophos
packages for use on a mail server are not priced for the home market.
Sophos quoted me a minimum license for protection of 50 PC's at $750 USD
and McAfee never bothered to return my call.

Looking at your mail headers

X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.

I'd be worried, if I were you. :) You are running a virus scanner on your
system, right?

http://www.symantec.com should have info, or try a google search for
I-Worm.Magistr.b

Re: Virus was sent from the list!!!!

2001-12-11 Thread Edward Dekkers

Excuse me, this is a RedHat mail list. Does this mean you are reading
your e-mail using Outlook, on a MicroCrap Windoze box? If so , why?

 Color me confused.

Vidiot, relax,
I use OE on Winbloze myself because Linux just acts as our server.

For the application development we do and the applications we need, we
CAN NOT use Linux on our desktops.

We really would like to and god knows in the future this could be a real
possibility, but for now, Nortons will just have to be our saviour.

That's why.

:)
