First make sure that it isn't dropping you to a console because of a configuration issue with your video card. You can do this by typing "startx" (without the quotes) and the command line once logged in. If everything comes up fine, then you can proceed to do the following. If it doesn't then you first need to fix that or else you may just cause yourself more grief. So if "startx" works... Log out of X. Log in as root (or type "su -" and type the root password when prompted). type "pico /etc/inittab" (I choose pico here because the learning curve is nil) It's not the best editor in the world, but it is easy.) Scroll through the file and look for a line that looks like this... id:3:initdefault: and change the "3" to a "5", so that it looks like this... id:5:initdefault: When you reboot, you will be given the GUI login. Log in and type startx I'm not sure about the monitor issue. Have you checked your cables, etc? Won't load gui!!! I am newbie.
Ach!! Just installed Red Hat 7.2 as a dual-boot os on a 1. ghz 256 mg ram pc that is also running win98se. Installation went fine (according to the book i was following 'Learning Red Hat Linux') but when i boot up and choose to use Red Hat instead of dos it doesn't go to a gui (i installed both gnome and kde). Instead it goes to the text interface. Also it does this weird thing where as it asks for the login the screen dies for a second every 3-4 seconds. As soon as a login is entered and it is asking for the password that problem goes away. I have an ATI AGP Radeon VE graphics card. PLEASE somebody be able to help me!!! It's my first foray into Linux and i would like to start in a gui (my dos skills... practically non-existent...)
