Re: dual boot suggestions

2002-01-14 Thread dave brett

The method I found to work best is the following:
create 3 partitions by what ever method works best for you.
1st partition 10meg will be linux boot
2nd partition ???meg will be windows partition. Make this the active
partition
3rd partiton ???meg is the linux partition.

Install windows in the second partition. It will not know the 1st
partition exists and happly install in the second partition.

Install linux into the third partition and install lilo or grub into the
MBR. During the installation it will ask if you want to set-up the dual
boot.

CAUTION! Partition Magic does NOT yet support EXT3 system. I've
confirmed this on the phone with them. If you go the Partition Magic
route, you'd do well to stay with EXT2, NOT EXT3

Alternatively if you don't want to pay for Partition magic here's how I
did it.

Install Win98
Defragment
Get 'Ranish partion mgr.' from CNET.com (you could do this first of
course)
Read the instructions then squeeze your Win98 (currently hogging the
whole disk) down to whatever suits you leaving a completely unaccounted
for part of disk.
Install redhat, it should be happy to just move into the unaccounted for
part of your disk wihtout question or difficulty.

Good luck.

Hello there, if you have Win98 alreay onstalled then you could use Partition
Magic 7 to make the Linux partitions. saves you all the head ache. After
creating the EXT2 and swap partitions just boot from the linux install cd
and the installation will go smooth as silk.

This doesn't seem to work with WinMe. I'm not sure if it is just me or if ME
uses the MBR differently. Has anyone gotten this to work with ME?

Make your Windows partition with fdisk and use Redhats diskdruid during that
install.

Install Win 98 first, then Redhat, lilo or grub will have no problem booting

dual boot suggestions

2002-01-11 Thread gabriel

hey everyone
i'm about to attempt the ridiculous task of installing both win98 and
redhat on one hard drive and i'm looking for suggestions.

i know, i know
the best thing i could do is get 2 hard drives and go that route,
but that's not an option at the moment.

my problems as of late have been that both os's like to put their
partitions at the beginning of the hdd. so before i go about doing all
this again, i'm looking for some general "gotchas" you all might know
about.

thanks for the help.
