Hi,

That's a violation of what we have discussed earlier iirc. KDE should only
depend on stuff that is properly released.

I'm quite puzzled by this, especially since it, as I see it, was Eigen people
who ported step from gmm to eigen.

I see the following possibilities:
1) step don't get released with 4.3.
2) eigen people start to work fast to revert the porting of step to eigen back

3) eigen people start to work fast to get a stable release out before 4.3,
maybe just backporting the needed things to 2.0 ?

I really think that packaging a snapshot or packaging unstable releases is the
very wrong approach here.

Further yet unstatisfied (but at least listed in CMakeLists.txt)
dependencies for 4.3 seem to be:
 - yet unreleased eigen for kdeedu/step
 - yet unreleased sip/PyQt4 for pykde4
 - trunk phonon for mplayerthumbs to work with phonon backend (and not
mplyer executable - this one is optional though)

If some of them are not going to be released before 4.3, well... packagers
(for source based distros at least - eigen is purely build time dependency
so may not bother binary distros) may need to either hold 4.3 releases or
release snapshots of dependencies on their own.

Phonon was discussed earlier, and it was said that phonon is not going to get
a release until the Qt 4.6 release.

I haven't seen any reports of kdebindings not building - a Mandriva packager
first made us aware of some missing files in csharp/soprano. What errors do
you get? And please send them to this list since I don't think many bindings
people are reading the release/packaging lists (at least I'm not, but maybe I
 should join).

The details are always available on http://developer.kde.org/~dirk/dashboard/,
or by listening to dashbot on irc.

E.g. the current build failure is the following:

[Thu Jun 4 2009] [00:26:42] dashbot 4.2/kdebindings r971528 failed (details
under http://developer.kde.org/~dirk/dashboard/ ):
[Thu Jun 4 2009] [00:26:42] dashbot smoke/soprano/x_10.cpp: In member

[Thu Jun 4 2009] [00:26:42] dashbot smoke/soprano/x_10.cpp:516: error:
'LanguageTag' was not declared in this scope

But I guess that's just a wrong soprano version?

If the current Smoke sources were generated with an old version of soprano it
might explain the error. I think dashbot needs to do a 'make clean' to remove
the sources and then 'make' to regenerate them against the current soprano
headers. If that still doesn't work then it is a bug.

Big *grumble* yes it was.

That's (of course) not a possibility.

 2) eigen people start to work fast to revert the porting of step to eigen back

First time in my FOSS experience that someone tells me that we should
start to work fast on something.

Anyway, that is a bad possibility. Gael did not only do the porting,
he improved and cleaned the code base. Nobody wants to lose this (not
to mention that if Step developers later built upon that, that really
can't be reverted).

 3) eigen people start to work fast to get a stable release out before 4.3,
maybe just backporting the needed things to 2.0 ?

We don't have a choice, we must go for 3). Either of the possibilities
that you suggest.

Technically it's possible, and a possible fallback. But meanwhile I've
started thinking that releasing a 2.0.3 that supports KDE 4.3
shouldn't be a big problem. This would be a nicer solution. See email

This is done now. The eigen 2.0 stable branch now allows to build the
latest Step (r977545). I'll tag it as 2.0.3 after it has received some
testing, that is in a few days. Step can also still be build with the
eigen found in kdesupport.

If you want to check out the eigen 2.0 branch without using mercurial, use:
