Re: [Repeater-Builder] No TX audio

2004-01-14 Thread Virden Clark Beckman
Take a telephone butt set to examine the output, and some resistors. If
these are simulcasting it would seem there is something affecting the
ptt parallel circuit - take 2 or 3 some 1n4001 to act as isolator so
that one ptt does not backfeed into the other. I think I would use a
pair of output buffers on the audio to prevent excess loading of the
controller output although that is not your problem today it may occur
when the temps get higher in the radio-room.

 Gentlemen:

Something very strange just started to happen to my repeater
system. First off, I have a UHF Mastr II on UHF and another
Mastr II on 6 meters ties together using an RC-100 controller.

The 6 meter machine is connected as the main repeater and
the UHF is connected as the remote base (full duplex).

All of a sudden, I lost audio from the UHF transmitter ONLY
when coming in on UHF. 6 meters to UHF works just fine?

Basically, this is what's happening (audio):

 UHF to 6 meters --OK
 UHF to UHFNada
 6 meters to UHF---OK
 6 meters to 6 meters--OK

The reason this has me so confused, is that the audio
to both transmitters is driven off the same point in
the controller, except for a 4.7K resistor in series
 for the UHF transmitter.

Sounds like a UHF transmitter problem Eh? Can't be
because the audio from 6 meters comes through just
fine with no distortion. I was thinking about a
desence problem on the UHF receiver, but the audio
from UHF passes through the 6 meter machine just fine.

The site is on a very large hill, with a 20 degree sloped
laneway, covered in snow/ice. I think a snowmobile
would have a hard time getting up at this time of
the year. Walking up is the only option, and with a
windchill of -25F, I only want to do this once.

If anyone has any clue what to look for once I do make it
up there, let me know. I'll take up an audio signal tracer
with me to see where it stops, but hopefully someone
 has run into this before.

[Repeater-Builder] Purc 5000 programming??

Hi, I have acquired a purc 5000 with the enhanced drawer that is

it's still on the old freq. Someone suggested to us that the actual
operating freq could only be changed by motorola. Anyone know for sure?

Each of the PTT's are being driven by separate FETS

as you can get :) You are correct that they are being
 simulcast.

[Repeater-Builder] 146-148 Mhz Maxtrac question

2004-01-14 Thread Chris Peterson
Hi all,

I got a couple of 146-148 Maxtracs that I was thinking of making a repeater
out of. The problem I have is that the only frequencies I can get
coordinated are in the 145 Mhz part of the band.

Is there a mod for these radios to get them to go down there or am I out of
luck? I looked on Batlabs and there is no mod listed, but I hoped perhaps
the list would know of something.

If these aren't going to be usable for me, I might be interested in trading
them for similar gear that will go into the 145 portion of the band.

Thanks and 73,
Chris, KG0BP

A good idea overall but 1N4001's are a bit of an overkill (he
certainly shouldn't need 1 amp capability for PTT)!

1N4148's should more than enough...

 Hi,

I am requesting assistance on finding Motorola HT750 and HT1250
radios at a discount price for fire departments. I am looking for a
Motorola dealer in central Alabama they can provide a good price
between 450 and 510 dollars for these radios. Of course, they would
be new with a battery and Charger. We are presently looking into
purchasing radios within the next 15 days and would like some
responses on where to find these radios for that price.

Thank you in advance for your time and efforts.

If you are trying to put it on a ham frequency, the controller may
interpret that as being 'out of band'

If so - there is a menu selection Disable Range Checking?

Try doing that.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Purc 5000 programming??

2004-01-14 Thread m . rowley
Well let's look at this from this prospective.

I removed the power amps and the power supplies from the purc 5000 cabinet.
I then put them in a cabinet with an antenna relay from RF Parts.
This power amp, on VHF, is capable of 500 watts rf output on FM and on SSB.
You need a manual to help you understand what the modules are expecting, so
get a manual if possible. The manuals that come with the PURC are quite large.

I do not use the exciter rf module, I excite the power amp with a FT-100.
The results are most impressive, especially with an antenna with 9db gain fed
with half inch hardline. Can you here me now!

Watch out for heat dissipation from the power amp. You need the fan shelf or
other fans to cool it.

Hello Jed.

As no one else has said it yet, I will. For the cost of the new Icom
unit alone your club could put together a top shelf UHF repeater
including duplexer and controller as well as antenna and feedline. (If
one shops wisely). Units such as the MII, Master Exec II or MVP, not
to mention the Mitrek are available for next to nothing. These radios
when duplexed will perform as well as or better than most of the
commercial offerings available today. The education you recieve during
the duplexing/tuning process will come in handy later when maintenence
time comes around.

With regard to the RP 4020, I have some experience with two different
units and I find myself less than impressed. Especially after looking
at the original sales invoice!

I am sure that others have their own opinions.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Adding Bandpass Cavities Preamp

2004-01-14 Thread Sean KE6MOW
On Wed, 14 Jan 2004, Eric Lemmon wrote:

It is not as important to have bandpass cavities in front of pre-amps at
UHF, since the split is usually 5 MHz, than it is at 2m with a 600 kHz
split. So, I believe that you probably don't have to use a BP filter,
but it may prevent overloading of the pre-amp.

One of the reasons for using a BP cavity in front of a pre-amp is to
protect the pre-amp from surges and spikes coming in through the
 antenna.

The bandpass filters are used to narrow down the frequencies that make it
to the pre-amp for ampification. Even tuned pre-amps amplify unwanted
signals. You want to minimize the amount of junk your pre-amp amplifies,
which will minimize the changes of over-loading the receiver and intermod.

passage from Chip Angle's web site.

clip
Most of the real RF world can easily pass into the front of your receiver
virtually unattenuated. There is an average of only a few dB attenuation
away (out of band) from the operating frequency. If you are using a
preamplifier then there is no protection for your receiver whatsoever to
overload by signals even several hundred MegaHertz away. They can even be
on distant mountain tops and still be causing you interference. The
inclusion of a couple of low loss band pass resonators on the receiver
port of the duplexer will eliminate most of the interference from out of
band signals.
clip

and a short passage from DCI's website

clip
Third, many times when you add a preamp, the sensitivity of the receiver
gets worse, and intermod pops up everywhere. What is the reason for this?

When you add a preamp, especially a broadband one, all signals from
police, firefighters, etc. get amplified at the same time. If your
receiver created intermod with out-of-band signals stronger than -50 dBm
then after adding the preamp with 20 dB of gain, all signals of -70 dBm
will now be amplified to -50 dBm. You may have signals with strengths of
-30 dBm before adding the preamp. These will now be -10 dBm; very strong
signals indeed.

All these new strong signals will now start mixing in your receiver and
creating intermod that never existed before the preamp. As well, if
signals are strong enough they will desense your receiver without causing
intermod. The only answer in a case where adding a preamp makes things
worse is to reduce the strength of the strong, out-of-band, signals with
filtering.

In summary, a good gallium arsenide (GASFET) preamp, if used with good low
loss RF filters will almost always increase your sensitivity
