Couldn't agree with you more. The important point is that you can't
insert
an SWR meter or wattmeter in the line to make adjustments and then
take it
out. The GE Z-match gives you the directional coupler which gives you
a
leg up on the adjustment process. Otherwise you are stuck with the
max
output for min current. Of course that should be our objective anyhow
but
many don't have an ammeter or voltmeter on the power source (I just
replaced stuck plastic meters on one of my Astrons with digital panel
meters: ).

Re: [Repeater-Builder] circulators

2004-01-27 Thread bradley glen
Hi

Just a reminder that one has to use a filter after the
circulator as the materials used are inherent 2nd
harmonic generators.A 2nd harmonic filter or cavity
will be placed to assist for a clean signal.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] TE Systems Amplifier

2004-01-27 Thread Rogers, Ron
Sounds like an exciter problem or duplexer/cavity filter tuning drift
problem, not an amplifier problem. (Assuming you are using a duplexer in the
repeater)

Have you checked the input power to the amp from the exciter device ??
How are you measuring the output power in relation to the antenna ??? Before
the duplexer or on the output of the duplexer.

Amplifiers always heat up when used so cold WX should not make it reduce in
power since the unit should be "self-warming" after a few minutes of
"on-time".

Has anyone that is using one of the TE Systems amplifiers ever had a problem
with a low power output during cold weather ?

We have one that has been running for 6 years and it seems when temp. drops
below 50 degrees F, seems the output power is lowered quite a bit. Before we
dig into the amp , I thought maybe someone on the list might have had the
same problem and found a solution.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Motorola M120 COR Voltage

2004-01-27 Thread kc7gf
The COR output on an M120 is an open collector thru a transistor to ground,
therefore you will not see any voltage change unless you supply a +5 or +12
voltage through a 10K or 100K to this pin. Then when the collector switches to
ground it will pull down the voltage on the end of the resistor to ground. The
collector is protected by a 27 volt zener.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Dual Band Antenna's?

2004-01-27 Thread Virden Clark Beckman
For commercial tower installation watch those wind load numbers, most
towers want a 90-100+ wind load, 120+ within 5 miles of navigable water.
As far as efficiency goes there is no such thing as a multi-band
antenna, the ham patterns are generally so high on the horizon that you
would need a good aeronautical audience to make it useful. The ham
antennas usually get damaged fast unless you add braces about 2/3 to the
top for support in wind, if you could mount them upside down without
filling with water along with the brace they would work good - or used
at home stations as intended.

I've seen several situations where a 8-pole dual band antenna was
built by taking a VHF 4-pole and a UHF 4-pole and mounting both
on one mast (UHF on top), and either using two feedlines or a
TX-RX diplexer into one feedline.

One "gotcha" - watch out for the 3rd harmonic of the VHF TX
landing on the UHF input, and watch the VHF RX freq if the
UHF TX uses a tripler as the final multiplier. I was told about
one system by the owner where he claimed to have to add a
UHF notch cavity to the VHF TX line to notch out a harmonic...
he referred to it as a "suck-out" cavity.

Anyone tried stuffing one of the ham dual banders inside a good radome
like an old Sinclair or DB products antenna that was bad? I was
thinking of gutting one of the old bad ones I have, cutting Styrofoam or
something to keep the antenna in the middle of the radome and stuffing
it back inside there for protection. I'm assuming that the failures
with the comet/diamond type are physical in nature.

I'm sure this has been discussed before but what are your thoughts
about a good quality base station dual band (2/440) antenna's? I
know I can get the Diamond / Comet but was woundering if there's
anything out there in the commercial world.

[Repeater-Builder] Yaesu rotor interface GS-23

2004-01-27 Thread Gran Clark

Hi All
Our club has a HF remote base controlled from 70 cm.  The beam rotor
is a Yaesu G1000S/SDX with a GS-23 RS232 interface.  The problem is
a -50 Deg error at 360 Deg.  There is no error at 0 Deg.

There are two adjustment pots on the board but their functions are not
identified.
Does anyone have a manual or a calibration procedure?

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Z-Matcher Component Values and Sources

2004-01-27 Thread Eric Lemmon
Tony,

Thanks for the kind words. I had no idea this topic would generate so
much interest!

Bearing in mind that the basic function of an impedance matcher is to
add a tuned output circuit to the power amplifier, the first step is to
tune the PA with the Z-matcher connected as close to the PA as
possible. Use a good RF power meter, such as a Bird 43, and terminate
its output at a good 50 ohm load. If the power climbs above the rated
value, reduce the drive level until you have achieved the best possible
match at full rated power. What you have done at this point is to
optimize your PA for a purely resistive load.

Ah, but the "real world" is hardly ideal, and duplexers are no
exception. Because duplexers are resonant devices, there will be some
reactance seen by the transmitter when it is connected to the duplexer's
TX input. One of the ways to minimize (it cannot be eliminated) this
reactance is to always have a 6dB attenuator on both cables of the
network analyzer when tuning the cavities. The attenuators also prevent
ringing in the cables when the cable length is harmonically related to
the wavelength of the signal. This ensures that the tuning of the
cavities is based on 50 ohm inputs and outputs. This is perhaps an
oversimplification, but it's close!

The next step is to connect the PA to the duplexer, with the Z-matcher
in place, using a non-magic length of 50 ohm cable. Then, attach your
power meter and dummy load to the antenna connector of the duplexer.
Key the transmitter, and fine-tune the Z-matcher for maximum forward
power. If you antenna system is known to be a good match, you can
connect it and relax.

It is interesting to watch the PA current while tuning the Z-matcher.
While the current will usually be at minimum at the point of maximum
efficiency, it doesn't always tell the full story. There are many ways
to build a PA, and some of them are stable but not very efficient, and
some are the opposite. To protect the PA, you want to limit the power
dissipation to a safe level. Therefore, you must lower the drive level,
which lowers the current, and also the power output. Moreover, always
be ready to reduce the drive level when you are tuning a PA with an
impedance matcher.

Regarding the sources for air variable piston trimmer capacitors, here
are some suppliers:

Voltronics, Inc.
Johanson Manufacturing Corp.
Compucon Distributors, Inc.
Murata-Erie North America, Inc.
Electronics Technologies, Inc.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Z-Matcher adjustment

2004-01-27 Thread Laryn Lohman

We have a GE MII 225W repeater with the two 110W combined amps,
driven with the single 110W amp. The book on this thing describes
how to adjust each Z matcher, but not any specific instructions when
combined like these are. The adjustments interact considerably.

In this case, what is best, just go back and forth between the two
amps while connected to the duplexer as normal, or is there a better
way? Will the best-efficiency adjustment coincide with the least
reflected power adjustment? If not, which one to pick? Thanks

I must be dense . From what I understand you have the transmitter (no
tuning in the amplifier stages) , then the swr meter ,the Z-matcher , and
then the duplexer. It will not change the tuning of anything if you tune
fhr z-matcher for minimum reflected power and then remove the swr meter.
It will only change what the transmitter sees and it is not tunable anyway.
That is all that the matching section does in the duplex transmitter. It
does not tune for maximum efficiency if you follow the GE tuning
instructions.

The zmatcher matches the reactive impedance to the transmitter, not the
resistive load - any cable changes or anything will affect this

That's true, and if you could achieve a perfect match at the impedance of
the wattmeter, that might work, but remember, we're probably not tuning to
a 50 ohm match between the PA and the Z-match, rather between the Z-match
and the duplexer (if it was aligned at the factory etc). So, I would fear
that a change in length of cables between the PA and the Z-match would
cause a change in the match and associated problems.

I haven't seen the DB Products Z-match but having the directional coupler
built in certainly negates the need for placing anything else in line.

This is a very interesting thread and I appreciate all the great ideas
being shared!

Have not looked at all the posts about the z matcher but has anyone memtioned

voltage/wattage metering circuit built in and one
tunes it for min reverse reading. Just a simple pi network. Works great.

Why can't you take the swr meter out ? The Z-matcher is after the place
where the swr meter is.
The purpose of the matcher is for minimum swr or reflected power, the same

Just the lowest power supply drain, when you do this into the installed
system you can then insert a wattmeter and adjust the output as desired,
probably on a station heat sink to 98 percent rated output. It has been
mentioned sporadically here about the isolator/circulator as an
additional benefit if the antenna is torn away from the tower by mother
nature, making the capacitor adjustment first with the ancillary
equipment all in place then come back and set the output level, remove
the meter from the pa to isolator port line and you can sleep well.

Downloading all the terrain data needed definitely requires a broadband

Otherwise, most of the large radio manufacturers sell (very expensive)

[Repeater-Builder] What is it ??

2004-01-27 Thread Johnny
I am the proud owner of a TFE 6050A.
Now I gotta figure out what to do with it.
It is 2" x 1" x 5 with 2 cables permenatly attached on one end and 3
adjustment screws on the other end.
It came with a little TFE 6030A 4 cavity Motorola mobile duplexer.
