Re: [Repeater-Builder] Audio Reproduction
Hi Kevin, Since the final result of a PM modulator is FM, the term True FM implies that the modulator being spoken about is just that, truely FM, not PM. The True output of a True phase modulator is Truly preemphasized audio. The True output of a True frequency modulator that is preceeded by True pre-emphasis is also Truly preemphasized audio. But using the term True FM implies there must also be a False FM, which would be PM. So we can say that the True output of a False FM is Truly preemphasized audio. Likewise, there is no need for True preemphasis ahead of a False FM to obtain preemphasized audio. 73, Bob, WA9FBO Yahoo! I just can't remember if the Mitrek has an HPF in the mic line (other than pre-emp). Yes, about a year ago I designed and built a clipper/LPF board that works great. Then I bought 4 new (to me) companies and have been busy with that. I have about a dozen of the boards ready to stuff, but I don't have the time to do it (probably takes 30 min per board). I have the first one I built running on the local 2M machine here, sounds great. These use adjustable "brick wall" type filters that are tunable with a pot from about 2500 Hz to 5000Hz cutoff freq. When set to 3300 Hz or higher, they seem to sound "transparent". I suppose for links you might want them set at 4 to 5 Khz. The filter is very flat from about 50 Hz to .9 Fc. [Repeater-Builder] Re: G6-144b or Ringo???
I don't agree... The bandwidth of that counterpoise assembly is relatively broad, especially compared to the Diamond and Commet type of multiband antennas. I use the Ringo in both Commercial and Amateur 100 watt duplex repeater systems all the time... no problama. I stopped using Multiband antennas for repeaters, many I've tested don't have enough bandwidth and are not adjustable as a general rule. The Ringo is a great repeater antenna, if properly assembled and tuned. The DC shunt of the ring is a very nice part of the antenna. The initial tuning of the Ringo is a bit more work than most lazy folks want to do. Once properly adjusted, you rarely have to retouch the matching. I use both the Ringo and the Hustler G6/G7 type of antennas. Get a newer Hustler if you buy one, so you don't have to deal with their older lousy rain drain system. The preformance will have a lot to do with your HAAT (elevation). The antennas have different beamwidths. In reality, you might not notice a lot of difference. Changing from the ARX2 to the "B" version will probably set up the largest change in preformance. skipp www.radiowrench.com > Virden Clark Beckman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > If they are going to stay with 2 antennas use diamond x50 for tx, or > full duplex - the ringo anything won't work well in duplex because there > is an imaginary counterpoise formed by the gauss at one specific freq, > not more than one. > > ki5fw wrote: > > > > A local amateur radio club needs to do some antenna work on their > > repeater. [Repeater-Builder] Re: so239 shields
David, The rear mount SO-239 "hoods" are hard to find. I believe the last place I bought them was DigiKey. Be careful to order the right size hood. I was not able to find/buy the RG-8 size, so I just stocked up on the smaller sized and cut them with a fine blade saw for the larger coax. One of the RG-142/400 teflon type coax cables work pretty well inside the cabinet. RG-214 also works, but it's large and unwieldy. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Audio Reproduction
Joe, I think you forgot another likely reason: The HIGH PASS FILTER in the mic circuit. Like the high frequency energy, there is also a lot of low frequency energy (below 300 Hz) on simplex that is being stripped by the high pass filter in the mic circuit that ensures CTCSS frequencies in the user's voice don't false decoders or interfere with the transmitted CTCSS. I don't think that HPF is on the PL board on a Mitrek, but I could be wrong. I don't have any books at home right now for one. I think your best solution is to run unprocessed audio (no de-emph - no preemph). If you do, most of your audio coloring should go away. I don't recall the audio chain of the Mitrek exciter, so you may have to add limiting and LPF'ing to the TX audio (Joe, weren't you working on an aftermarket board to do that?). I know in some units, you can still use the stock filtering, as the preemphasis (that you need to eliminate) is before those stages. Of course, this would only apply to a FM exciter (which the Mitrek is). It would not apply to a PM exciter. Joe M. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Relay
It isn't clear from the picture what the little arm does out in front, but the conversion van style uses a thermal reset, no handles or anything to touch at all - when it cools down it will reset itself, if the fault still exists it will heat and open again and again like a turn signal flasher. I'm > using > a motorola mitrek mobile for a repeater. Are that PM > or True FM? The Mitrek uses a "true FM" modulator, they are not PM at all. The problem in the sound of your repeater is probably a couple of things: 1: The de-emp and pre-emp curves you are using probably don't exactly "line up" and cause some coloring of the audio. 2: The LPF filter in the Mitrek tends to start some rolloff at 2KHz or so, causing some loss in high end energy that is still there on simplex. Your best diagnostic source would be to sweep your audio freq through the whole repeater. Start at 200 Hz or so at 2 KHz of deviation and plot the TX output every 100 or 200 Hz all the way to 3000Hz. Keep your RX input audio level the same, and record the TX dev output. Ideally, you would have a straight horizontal line, but its likely to show some rolloff on both high and low end. If they are going to stay with 2 antennas use diamond x50 for tx, or full duplex - the ringo anything won't work well in duplex because there is an imaginary counterpoise formed by the gauss at one specific freq, not more than one. ki5fw wrote: > > A local amateur radio club needs to do some antenna work on their > repeater. What does the spectrum noise sound or look like? are you using any pre-amp? try taking it away, adding pl will not fix this only mask it making other problems show up, you need to get the radio working on-the-air before you add features like ctcss. Can you df the source of the offending signal or is it just white noise? have you tried any other feedline or antenna at your site to test with? can you hear any voices, try snooping for the pl they are using with some scanning equipment, welcome to repeater construction, life after the soldering iron can take awhile till you locate on a good clean tower that can hear something. Hold down the func key on the side the entire time you press the 6 numbers on front, i don't have the manual handy but once you are in program mode use the up/down arrows to change channels - 5 shows the rx - i think 7 shows the offset, plus or minus or nothin - pl uses a code and you'll need the manual for those numbers unless you have that memorized, if you still get nowhere, open the radio and apply power with jumper wires to the bottom spring things and reach into the pc board behind the screen with a plastic popsickle stick and push that black button when applying power to erase all the memory status. reassemble the radio and reprogram everything including the scan features. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Audio Reproduction
Hi Eric, Hello Bob, so tell me what kind of buffering Op Apmare you using in you controllers? I've used the LM324quad opamps but I can still tell I my audio sounddifferent comming out of my HT than the repeater. I amtaking my audio directly off the discrimanator goingthrough a opamp with de-emphasis then to the micinput. I still don't like the way it sounds. I'm usinga motorola mitrek mobile for a repeater. Are that PMor True FM? We've been using the MC34074 for many years because it doesn't oscillate when driving a varying capacitive load. That's kind of a special requirement because we use op amps to feed a crosspoint switch that distributes the audio to various destinations, and the crosspoint looks like a fairly big capacitive load that varies with the number of switches that are turned on. While you may need a special op amp for certain applications, most op amps work fine for this kind of thing and I don't think the LM324 is the source of your problem. It could be the corner frequency of the de-emphasis circuit, an impedance mismatch, a level problem, etc. Maybe you could post a sketch of the circuit? I don't have a Mitrek book here, so someone else will have to comment on the modulation method. BTW, I'm curious - - what's the difference between True FM and FM? 73, Bob WA9FBO Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] G6-144b or Ringo???
If you cannot afford a DB224, then the G6-144 would be my choice. I had occasion several years ago to do a head to head comparison between a DB224 and a G6-144, and I could not find any real difference in performance. The Hustler antenna will not be a durable as a comercial antenna, but if cost is a concern, then it is the way to go. Incidentially, I do not recommend the G7-144, as it has some mechanical problems that can cause them to fail prematurely. A ringo is the last antenna I would put up for any reason. 73, Kevin, K9HX Yahoo! [Repeater-Builder] G6-144b or Ringo???
A local amateur radio club needs to do some antenna work on their repeater. For many years they have used two Ringo Ranger ARX2's (not the ARX2B). The RX antenna is at 220ft and the tx antenna is at 120ft on the tallest hill within 100 miles. Both are side mounted on a 400ft tower. The system has done a gud job in the past. I have recommended replacing the Ringos with Hustler G6-144b's. I use one on my VHF repeater in duplex and I am pleased with its performance. I know all about db224's and such but this club is not going the db224 or commercial route. I also know that U guys do not recommend Ringo's in duplex. The only question I'm asking is how much of a performance increase can be expected, if any, in using two G6-144b's over two ARX2 Ringo's??? I may get them to spring a couple hundred bucks for two new Hustlers. Tnx, Dennis ki5fw Lauderdale Rptr Group w5LRG 146.970/R 444.500/R Lauderdale County, Mississippi Yahoo! [Repeater-Builder] Here's your chance!
Hi folks We are considering adding Syntor and SyntorX remote base support to our controllers and I just wanted to get an idea of how much interest exists out there for this. By support, I mean to allow for making these radios frequency agile. Perhaps even Mostar? [Repeater-Builder] Re: ts -32 question
I agree with Lee. Check all the board/pin connections. These can cause this problem if not making gud connection. Pull out and reseat or use a toothpick or any nonconductive device and touch each pin and see what happens. This has cured the same problem for me before. If U R using a external Volume/squelch control besides the internal NHRC board check the main plug for tightness and gud connection. I know the question has already been answered, but car stereo places are a good source of fuses and power wiring - Some car stereo systems might just EXCEED the LEGAL LIMIT. De NU5D Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Audio Reproduction
Hi Eric, Anyone have a good design for a high quality Audio circuit to put in between the discrimanator and the TX audio? I not looking for the typical repeater controller design as I've been there and done that. I want the highest posible quality of audio reproduction I can get. As we're finding out via experiments here, there are other interesting sources of distortion (especially in older technology repeaters) besides those created in the audio circuits. For example, PMs built with a varicap and LC resonant circuit are based on the assumption that the phase shift of the circuit is linear as the varicap voltage is changed. This isn't true because the phase shift follows a tangent curve, thus you get more distortion at the ends of the curve than at the flattest part. Similarly, quadrature detectors use an LC resonant circuit and thus add distortion of their own to the recovered audio. Since the distortion occurs at the high end of the frequency response, tapping into this kind of discriminator for your audio results in more distortion, not less, than tapping into the audio after the de-emphasis. That's because the de-emphasis rolls off the distortion products. A surprising amount of distortion comes from multiplier stages that are mistuned. And, we've previously talked about the distortion that comes from the audio 'blobs', especially from the soft action of some limiters. For these reasons, I don't get too particularly worried about adding a couple of parts in the external audio chain - - especially since I'm in the controller business... :-) 73, Bob Bob Schmid, WA9FBOS-COM, LLC970-416-6505 phone970-419-3222 faxwww.scomcontrollers.com Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] TS-32 question
Loren, I will assume that this repeater has been operating with carrier squelch for a long time, and that the problem suddenly occurred a few days ago, and is continuous. >From the symptoms, it seems as if the receiver is either picking up a spurious signal due to a defect in or intermodulation from another transmitter, or something has changed in your own system. What events happened at the time your problem began? Things like severe weather, a new station installed nearby, or a power surge might be related. Adding tone decode now will only treat the symptom, not the problem, and it won't help desense. The first action should be to test to make sure your own transmitter is not desensing your receiver. The best way to do this is to transmit a weak carrier with a 1 kHz tone from a service monitor to a small test antenna- NOT directly into your antenna system- and watch the SINAD as you enable and disable your transmitter manually. Your receive SINAD should drop less than 1 dB when your transmitter comes on. If your repeater passes this test, then use a spectrum analyzer to see if there are any carriers on or near your repeater input frequency. If the interfering carrier is intermittent, a spectrum display helps to see what signals come and go at the same times, indicating possible intermod issues. One possible cause of continuous carriers at sites with several transmitters is a sloppy technician who doesn't bother to replace all of the shields after performing maintenance. Check around to see if nearby stations have every shield installed, with all of the screws properly tightened. Has any work been done recently on nearby stations? CASE IN POINT: Several years ago, I was seeing a continuous carrier on the input of a 2m repeater, at 147.900 MHz. Using T-Hunt equipment, I tracked down the culprit at a hilltop nearly two miles away. Another Ham was working on his 70cm MICOR repeater, and had left off the shields on the exciter shelf. His station operated at 443.700 MHz, which means the exciter was running at 147.900 MHz, since UHF MICOR stations use a VHF exciter followed by a tripler. He had jury-rigged the exciter to run all the time, to minimize the key-up interval. Once he buttoned everything back up, the leakage was undetectable. We live and we learn... 73, Eric Lemmon WB6FLY Loren James wrote: > > I have a GE Mastr II mobile radio converted to a repeater.
