[Repeater-Builder] midland low band

2004-09-04 Thread greenfin2002
hi all

just came across a pallet of midland lowband radios model no. 70-
050c. i am told they will tune to 6 meters but has anyone used them
to make a repeater? if so is it worth while to use these radios?

RE: [Repeater-Builder] midland low band

2004-09-04 Thread NC4AB
The 70-050C will cover 6 meters with reprogramming & retuning. They should
be an 80 channel 50 watt radio, and you can make a repeater out of them, you
will need one for transmit and one for receive.

The first thing to check is to make sure that they have the memory module
and the CTCSS board installed. They are programmed with a Midland 70-1000
programmer, e-mail me off list if you need any programmed

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Electricity question

2004-09-04 Thread Joe

You would have to approach the following subject carefully,
but it may help you out.
If the tower is not in use,  AND there has been no source of
electrical service to the tower, some municipalities consider the tower
as abandoned.  If you have a very good relationship with the tower
company you might bring it to their attention that it may, in fact, be to
their advantage to have you on the tower and reinstate electrical service
to the site.
Again, this can be a very touchy area, so you have to use diplomacy
before you bring up this subject.  You must not lead them to believe
that you are doing them a favor, just that you are trying to cooperate
with them.

Hello Mike,

has not
been anyone there for several years.  The tower company has donated
the
tower space as long as I help maintain the site (cut grass and
such).
All I must pay for is the electricity.  There is already a meter on
site
and run to the cabinet that I will be using. (cabinets are pole mounted

by the way)  Anyway, maybe if I go sit down and have a face to face
I
can get some where with our local power company.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Astron Power Supply Crobars

2004-09-04 Thread Joe

I work for a wireless company, sometimes rooftop sites near
elevators and other motor operated devices can cause tremendous voltage
spikes on the power line.  Your easiest fix would be to put a UPS
that does line conditioning on the Astron power supply.  This should
smooth out any AC glitches that come down the line.

Allow me to elaborate.
I have an RM-35M.  It has been in continuous repeater service for

more than 10 years without a hiccup.
Recently our hosts did some electrical work in the building.  They

installed new elevator motors and emergency power.  We are now

connected to the emergency power through a very large (~60lbs)
ferro-
resonate transformer.
The elevator motors and controllers are not in the same room as the

repeater, but the main power passes through our room.  The repeater

has been in the same location without any problems from the elevators

for 30-years.
After the change the RM-35M started crowbaring once or twice per
day.
I replaced the power supply with another RM-35M.  It has been
running
fine for a couple of weeks now.
The original power supply, plugged in on my workbench, with no load,

will crowbar after running for 3 to 12 hours.
So, will someone tell me about this replacement regulator board of
Skipp's?

Yes!
It is right in the software. You will want to touch up the receiver just a
bit. But it will work just fine with just the software.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] KENWOOD TKR-850 UHF REPEATER Can it be tuned and Programed in the Ham Band

2004-09-04 Thread Eric Lemmon
The answer is "probably." The fact that others have tuned a TKR-850 to
the 70cm band is not an absolute guarantee that your unit will do the
same. It may work fine, or it may barely make it.

The TKR-750 and -850 repeaters have manually-tuned bandpass filters in
the front end that must be optimized for the Ham bands. As delivered,
the filters in the TKR-850 are optimized for 450-470 MHz, but still need
to be tweaked for maximum receive sensitivity. Also, the RX and TX VCOs
need to be adjusted slightly to ensure that they operate over the
optimum locking range. Like most RF equipment, operating a TKR repeater
outside of its specified band carries some risk; it's best to minimize
the risk with careful tuning.

Before you attempt to tune this repeater, get a Service Manual from
Pacific Coast Parts, about $23. Leave the repeater power on while
you're waiting for the manual, so that the reference crystal oscillator
can "settle in" to a stable frequency. Every TKR repeater I have set up
needed to have the reference oscillator tweaked slightly to bring it
exactly on frequency.

Mike, You have NOT answered any of our e-mails. I sent you this very
same information, along with other related info for the rptr builders
site.

The Maxtrac/Radius line had a LPI version in VHF and UHF, usally the 2
to 10 watt version. I have also seen a 1 to 6 watt UHF PA for them.
The Mostar, and German Maxtrac have simmular PA stages.

I have the schematics for the 2 to 10 watt versions. As Keven said
here, removing a couple of stages by bypassing arround the driver and
output stage is what is needed. The transmitter PA's get really hot
even when "turned down" because the stages draw excess DC current. The
transistors are not designed to run in that part of the curve, and
become very in-effisient.

MIKE, please meet me this week end at The Big Yard sale.

Ken,

It's good to know that Kenwood now offers a TKR-850 repeater that is
specified for operation down to 440 MHz. The last one I worked on was
specified, in black and white, for 450-470 MHz. Its performance out of
the box was mediocre on 70cm, and it required careful retuning to work
in the 440-450 MHz band.

No, Kevin.

I'm not pissed because this isn't a priority for either Mike or you.
I'm pissed because Mike solicited a document from me, and since the time
I sent it to him, I've seen NOTHING else from him. (I even e-mailed him
a week later to see if he received it OK...) No mention of when to
expect to see it on the web site, nothing. And I think THAT'S what the
other person was complaining about, too. **Lack of communication.**

I understand that it's quite a project to keep a site and mail list like
Repeater-Builder running, and you have all been of much help to me on
other subjects in the past.

We got a message about 4 weeks ago (I think) to the effect that the web
page/site was undergoing rebuilding of its own. Fine... But at least
let the contributors know what's happening with their submissions. For
what it's worth, I supplied my information in the specific format in
which Mike asked me to put it... I don't mind helping out at all, and
that's what I was trying to do with my article. But it would be nice if
SOMEONE would at least take the time to say "Thanks, it might take us a
couple of months to get this posted. We'll keep you apprised."

So you know - I sent this submission on June 7th... more than just "a
few weeks", as you put it.

That's all I ask.

Let me trow my two cents:

Normally the TKR-850 came from factory programed and
tunned
in the 460 Mhz. range, so if you want to operate in the
amateur
freq's; is very important to retune the front end to bring
into specs.

2004-09-04 Thread Joel Mele

Hello to the group:

The local ham club might be getting some Homeland Security
funds from the County.

The group is considering equipment from Kendecom/Advanced
Communication Systems.

I do not have any knowledge of, or experience with this
manufacturer.    I would appreciate any comments or info the
group might have concerning this equipment.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] KENWOOD TKR-850 UHF REPEATER Can it be tuned and Programedin the Ham Band

Once you tuned it up, how well did it work?

BTW, from the Kenwood page at repeater-builder:

And does anybody have a photo of a TKR-720 or 820? I'd like one to
go along with the ones that are there.

From one Midland lover to another

Be sensitive to the duty cycle of your intended project.

I use a series of 70-5300BD on T band here in Chicago and have had to
  beef 'em up a little

I have owned a few Kendecom repeaters in the past that were bought by
the County because it wasn't politically correct for me to build and
sell (or give) them to the County.

Out of about five that were bought, only one is still in service.  They
are deaf and spurious by nature.  Tuning seems to fade over a short
period of time like the Spectrum machines.  I had to add receive
preamps to them to be even close to a Micor or Mastr II.

My advice is to keep looking
