As I understand from a friend they've been NLA for a few years.

I need 6 or so and am almost ready to call in a
favor and have a friend make some on a lathe,
starting with hex stock.

Seal it up so water cannot ingress into the joints or top. I use
heatshrink that is intended to be used in the CATV industry for this. I
have Hustler G6's and 7's that have been up for many years with this
approach and is has proven to add years to their life. I once installed
a new G7 and it lasted only one winter. Water had gotten into the
bottom and when it froze, pushed the antenna apart. Here is a link to

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Hustler G-7 220 Ant

2005-02-16 Thread Shanon Herron

Hello Don,
I use Ideal No-Ox on all slip joints and ALL screws.  It is available from most electrical supply outlets or Home Depot.  It is a gray gooey compound.  You must mix the contents before use.  There is a clear liquid and I believe the gray stuff is zinc.  I do not use the green stuff available, just doesn't seem to work as well as the gray stuff.
I also clean all edges of aluminum before assembly, there are many burrs left behind by machining.  These burrs can cause uneven tightening and over time cause cutting into the other piece.  I remove the screws of the coax connector, one at a time and coat with No-Ox.  I coat the radial screws and radials where they come in contact with the base with No-Ox before installation.
I assemble the antenna and put it on a 5 foot tall mast in the back yard away from other metal objects.  Attach my bird meter with an adapter right to the base of the antenna.  Short coax to a HT or mobile rig set to 5 watts and check the match.  Adjust as necessary….  Wipe the entire antenna with denatured alcohol, let dry and then spray with 2 or 3 coats of a good clear lacquer.
I wrap the installed coax connector with scotch 33 tape after tightening to the antenna with a pair of pliers, just to snug it up.  I overlap the tape from the coax back and forth up to the base of the antenna to add strain relief.  Then I wrap the whole thing with coax seal or coat it with Scotch-Kote.   I have had the coax seal dry and crack and fall off.  The scotch-kote works well over time.
Scotch cote is available from electrical supply outlets.  When I use it I put two or three coats.
I have had a G7-144 and a G7-220 on my tower for over 19 years.  Both work great.  Both on repeaters.  Never had a lightning hit.  Knock on wood!  Three 10 foot ground rods around the base with #2-O welding cable.  The 144 is on the top, tip at 71 feet, 220 side mounted, tip at 48 feet.
P.S. use a flexible jumper from the hardline to the antenna base, 2-3' makes it flexible.
Good luck, Shanon KA8SPW

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Hustler G-7 220 Ant

2005-02-16 Thread Scott

Here is my recent reassembly anticorrosion treatment (and a bit more) of a
failed by corrosion G7-144.

After I did the prescribed tune-up, I marked the slip joint lengths and then
I took the them apart and scratched up the mating aluminum and reassembled
each of the slip joints with an aluminum anticorrosive goop that I got from
the electrical section of the local hardware store. Then, for a measure of
permanence, as I knew that I would never be changing frequency, , I put a
couple of short self tapping screws into each slip joint and then I put a
layer of high-grade shrink tubing over each joint as Kevin suggests and then
finally, the hose clamp over that.

I did a similar treatment to each of the through bolt but joints. At each of
these, I cleaned the contacting metal to bright, further roughed up the
joints with an automatic center punch, applied more anticorrosive goop,
tightened very tightly and finally covered each joint with more high grade
shrink tubing.

The base / loading coil department of our antenna had corroded to the point
of electrical isolation of the radial / connector mount casting from the
mounting pipe and the base of the loading coil. I know that this sounds
impossible but I assure you, that's the way it came off the roof---
structurally sound but electrically isolated-needless to say, the
antenna had failed to the state being total unusable--terrible noise
desense. Anyway, Hustler's design was to sort of seal the coil cover but to
also leave a hole by the "N" connector for what ever water got inside to
sort of drain out -that's why they tell you not to use co-ax seal on the
connectorthey don't want you to plug the drain hole. My fix was to,
after replacing rusty rivets on both ends of the loading coil with stainless
10X32's and fixing the base conduction problem, drill a real drain out the
bottom, just in case, and sealed the coil cover with Silicone II sealant and
another ring of shrink tubing. Oh, I also covered the loading coil and it's
connections with Gorilla glue for waterproof protection inside before I put
the cover back and sealed it from above water.

The antenna is back in service and works well again.

Now, can it be made better-Beyond sealing it against corrosion
apparently not. I contacted Hustler and ask if the pattern could be drooped
from however it is when adjusted per their instructions by critical
adjustment of the slip joint settings or any other practical means. I was
told that adjustment of the pattern was not possible and that if I wanted
droop, I should special order on of their higher priced collinear where they
can introduce droop. I ask just what the elevation pattern of the G7 was as
they advertise a low angle of radiationI was sent a copy of an old sales
sheet showing a pattern peaking on the horizon. My antenna experts tell me
that this can't be done with a single or stacked assemblage of 5/8 's wave
sections--and my experience here is that our G7 seems to be "hotter"
above the horizon than on it and certainly below it--that's all I can
report on the subject.

The store in Santa Fe Springs is within reasonable driving distance, and
I will be in that area next week. I'll take an original locknut with me and
compare. If they work out, I'll buy a 10-pack (since I need six anyway),

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Hustler G-7 220 Ant

2005-02-16 Thread Eric Lemmon

Don,

You bet there is! At each slip joint between sections of aluminum
tubing, sand the inside and outside mating surfaces until they're
bright, clean them with solvent, and immediately coat those surfaces
with a granular-zinc-based contact enhancement compound such as
Penetrox, Adalox, No-Alox, or similar compound. The stuff you want is
gray, not copper-colored, and you can find tubes of it in most
electrical supply and home improvement stores. It's intended for
terminating aluminum conductors. Use this compound at threaded joints
as well, but NOT on the coaxial cable connector. A small dab of
silicone dielectric compound, usually supplied with the antenna, on the
threads of the connector will make it easy to remove years from now.
Finally, overwrap the coaxial connector with self-vulcanizing rubber
tape to seal it from water intrusion.

My radio club has a G7-220 antenna, as well as an R-8, that were
assembled with these precautions- in a coastal environment, no less- and
they're both performing well two years later. I also know of similar
antennas assembled without these precautions that are plagued with noise
and erratic operation. A little time spent during assembly will reap
great dividends!

Your choice of LDF4-50 Heliax for a feedline is an excellent one, and it
should perform well in your installation.

Reuben,

To what frequencies is this duplexer currently tuned?
