well, we are going to try this method:

first, we are going to try the unit as is and pay close attention to rx
sensitivity and swr.

second, we'll retune the notches (this was recommended by mary brown @ tx/rx)

third, they go back in a box for a trip back to mama (tx/rx)

i'll keep everyone posted.

[Repeater-Builder] Cushman Radio Communications Test Set

2005-04-24 Thread Doug

I have picked up one of these and the front Designation is obscured.
On the back serial number sticker, it refers to it as a model 4000B M02.
The unit is equipped with a Model 408 Universal Encoder. Some of the
keys on this unit have lost their return spring. So far that is all
I have found wrong with it. I thought there should of been a designation
such as CE-3 or CE-4 or something like that on the front. I have
no documentation on the unit. Can anyone tell me something about it.

Thanks

[Repeater-Builder] Motorola Micors

2005-04-24 Thread Don Pomplun

We have a bunch of Motorola Micor VHF radios
just gathering dust. All were taken out of railroad service, so
they operate in the 160 MHz range. So far I haven't pulled them out
to see how clean they are. I'm first interested in opinions on
their general value. This group seems like a good place to gather
such info.
I looked at model numbers. Probably a dozen are R43RTE1190BA
(70 / 12 volt); other model numbers were R43RTN1190A,
R73RTN3100A R43RTE1190AA.
Do I have a gold mine or a bunch of boat anchors?

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Duplexer Retuning

2005-04-24 Thread Eric Lemmon

Doug,

It is a characteristic of BpBr (bandpass/bandreject) duplexers that the pass
function is very broad while the reject notch is extremely sharp. While it is
true that a 15 kHz shift will probably not be noticed on the pass, it *might* be
significant on the notch. It takes a network analyzer, or a tracking spectrum
analyzer with a return-loss bridge, to accurately set the pass tuning. The
notch
is relatively easy to tune- just tune for minimum signal at the reject
frequency.

Another characteristic of BpBr duplexers is that adjustment of the threaded
tuning rod moves both the pass and the notch in unison, while adjustment of the
notch capacitor moves only the notch. Therefore, you should NOT touch the
capacitor. Simply tune the threaded rod while watching the notch on a spectrum
analyzer or RF millivoltmeter for minimum signal at the notch frequency. It may
be a good idea to tune each cavity individually. Keep in mind that 15 kHz is a
very small shift, so the movement of the threaded rod may be very small- perhaps
1/8 of a turn or less. On a TX-RX duplexer, maybe much less.

I tend to agree with other posters who suggest that you could probably use the
duplexer as-is. A 15 kHz shift is a pretty small change, and the tuning should
be attempted only with test equipment that is known to be exactly on frequency
or
is slaved to a frequency standard.

One of the hardest parts of building a good repeater from a Micor is
the control head removal and subsequent (re)placement of the
Volume/Squelch controls. The Railroad Micor is a great candidate for
building a 2 meter repeater because the interconnect/control board
already has a good number of items that make repeater building less
painful. If anyone is interested, here is the conversion of the Micor
Railroad Mobile to a repeater:

  Kevin ...

I looked at the site URL'd below ...

The service shop bench picture near the bottom ... I remember
those days except we didn't have the Motorola Station Monitor. We
used either a Gertsch FM-6 (at the GE Shop) or the Motorola
equivalent T-1020 version of the Gertsch FM-7 - both are hetrodyne
frequency meters. Basic range is 20-40 MHz (Mc back then.)

Think I still have at least one T-1020 somewhere ...

Deviation was checked on Radio Speciality Deviation 'Scope. Seems
I used to have two of those Dev' Scopes... but I guess they got
 'loaned out.'

Top shelf, left to right in the picture identifiable is the early
 a Bird Model 43 Wattmeter, I have (at least) one here one here;
Motorola Portlable test set, later years; I preferred the Motorola
TEK-5 Series Metering Panel (I have two of them here); looks to be
a Heathkit V7A VTVM, I have three of them here; and the Motorola
 Station Monitor.

In regards to the Heathkit VTVM, I found I have a Heathkit V6A
and three V7A VTVM's upstairs in the garage. Got them all out,
began to test them and get one going as I want a second VTVM on the

Pyramid SVR 200 vehicular repeaters are the same or worse.

I set some up to work with maratrac radios and when I keyed the svr 200
with no audio input or pl encode the deviation of the dead carier alone was
400 hz white noise these things were so microphonic I could have tied a
string and can to the case and used it for a microphone. I called the
factory and they told me it was the vco they use and it was normal. I would
not even consider running something like this on the ham bands unless I was
desperate. On the other hand the hardware platform and software/firmware
were great just the rf part sucked.
