I had the opportunity today to catch a Tornado Warning and the radio

Re: [Repeater-Builder] mixing problem?

I saw this happen once. Turned out to be a bearcat scanner. the right
combination of IF's and it stopping on the right programmed channel would
lock things up. Sometimes it sounded like a clicking noise as it was
scanning. Just a thought of something to look for.

everything went great here on the bench. when we installed the machine at
its new home at a residence on a hilltop we emediatly started having
problems with noise on the input freq. it only apears when the repeater is
in TX and it appears right on the input 147.630. I have ruled out desense
because you can hear the noise on a HT (on 147.630) but only when the
repeater is transmitting. I think this might be a mix of some sort but i
have no clue what to look for. can anyone help point me in the right

Re: [Repeater-Builder] New antenna install ? Any tips ??

2005-06-12 Thread Bruce Nanney
Hello there. I weather proof two different ways. I use good military type
caulk strips then wrap with 33+. This is what I use when I'm not planning on
taking the connecter off, such as a hard-line connecter.
The second is, when I'm going to be taking a connection apart, I use 3M
Scotch 23 rubber splicing tape , 2 wrap then put 33+ on top of it. The 3M
adheres to its self and leaves the connecter clean of residue after it taken
off. It's to take off too. Just cut each side of the wrapped connecter with
a razor knife and peal it like a banana.
Scotch makes some good products. I' m not advertising, just proven
experience of over 25 years. Thanks, Bruce KD4BOH.

Perhaps arrange for a Native American rain dance -- there's something
 about
installations made during rotten weather. Really!

Failing that, pay close attention to your jumper connects. I like to
 dab
 a
wee bit of clear silicone grease on the threads (not pins) as an
 anti-oxidant.
Caution on tightening -- too much wrenching can deform the coupling
 make
 'em prone to leakage.
Avoid cheezy tape from the dollar store; pay a little extra for the good
 stuff.

The receiver and exciter of the Mitrek are all one board. The PA deck
deck is made up of ceramic substrates that are bolted into the heat sink.
What you want to do is simply not cost effective or practical.

If you want to take two radios and make up a split site high band
repeater with a UHF cross-link then you need to find one each UHF
and high band GE Mastr II and simply swap the receivers, then
bring the RX antenna connector out to the front panel. The
mod is so easy you would think the radios were designed for that.
Look at the procedures for duplexing the Mastr-II on
repeater-builder.com - it's all there.

You will end up with a 2m RX in the same housing as the UHF TX,
and a 440 RX in the same housing as the 2M TX. Put the control
stuff at the 2M RX end and treat the 2M RX/440 TX as if they were
a single site 2M repeater.

BTW you will be a lot happier if the UHF radio you pick for this is a
406-420MHz model and you get a 420.5 to 421 MHz (or so) crosslink
frequency, use low power, and beam antennas. If the distance is short
(less than 5 miles) you will probably be able to disconnect the PA deck
completely and feed the 420 exciter to the beam antenna.

Then try plus or minus 10.7, 11.7, and 21.4
The most interesting example of a broadcasting local
oscillator was reported on a Chicago 220 repeater about
20 years ago. The repeater (carrier squelch) was located in
the equipment room on the top of an office building. Every s
o often the repeater would unsquelch and fade in (as if
ramping up the TX power) play a local radio station quite
clearly, then anywhere from 30 seconds to an hour or two
later it would slowly fade out (not suddenly drop off) and the
squelch would close. There was no pattern except that it was
most often in the morning and evening, and would rarely happen
on a week end, but when it did it might last for hours.
To make a long transmitter-hunting story short (it took a couple
of months), the source turned out to be a harmonic of the local
oscillator of the FM receiver in the elevator car of the same office

building where the repeater was. The FM receiver was on the
roof of the car, and powered by the lighting circuit. Only when

the car was within two floors of the roof did the problem happen,
the second-to-the-top floor was only partially rented, and the
top floor was storage and air conditioning. The control system
of the elevator was relay based and left the car at whatever floor
was it's last destination. The assumption was that the receiver

filter caps were a little old and the LO was being slightly
modulated by the received audio.
The cure? Twist the knob to change stations on the FM
receiver.
I had a similar situation as I was driving down the highway
one day. My UHF Micor receiver (on 445.xxx MHz)
unsquelched and I started to hear a FM station. It got stronger

as a new Toyota Cressida pulled along side, peaked as it
passed me and then squelched as the car reached a distance
of about 5-6 car lengths ahead. I was not in a hurry so I followed

it off of the next ramp and then into a fast-food chain restaurant
parking lot. The Toyota's driver went inside, I pulled into a
nearby
parking spot and as I walked inside to get a drink I walked past the

Toyota and looked at the dashboard - a brand new Sony high-end
aftermarket receiver. Oh well, that's what PL on the repeater

output is for...

2005-06-12 Thread Richard

Yes,
I've noticed the trend for several years; it looks like they are going to be
carrying mainly home entertainment and cell phones. It's a shame, really, but
they have to go where the market is, and people just don't repair or build
things anymore.

One
point I agree with is that the store personnel have little knowledge of the
merchandise they sell, except maybe for cell phones and batteries. This has been
the case for many years. When I go to Radio Shack to buy a part, sometimes,
when they ask, I'll tell them what I need it for (a repeater, two-way radio,
etc),just for the satisfaction of seeing the confusedlooks or to
impress them.

When
Radio Shack stops selling parts, I'll have to mail order
everything.

I should add that we ended up screening the tops of our coax stubs as the
coupling between them was considerable. It made a big difference screening
 the tops.

All we did was get some cardboard tube, cover it in tin foil and bond it
 to
 earth.

I have seen notches in this range, but they were made from RG-214 and
a BNC Tee. If you have test equipment anything is possible, And if
you can't make it work, mess with the test equipment until it does.

[Repeater-Builder] OT Echolink, Win98 and WRT54G

2005-06-12 Thread georgiaskywarn
Sorry for the OT. I posted this to the Echolink Yahoogroups and am
waiting to be moderated. I really want to be online tonight for
testing...have other things to do than sit in front of the computer
all night ;-)

I cannot get Echolink up and running on this Win.98 computer. No
problems on my Win 2000...but don't want to run it on that one. It
fails on the troubleshooter with error 10060. Is it the Win98
computer? I think everything is set correctly in the router since one
computer works. What am I over looking?

Robert

Make sure the ports are forwarded to the computer that you are setting up.
Also, you can only have one Echolink node per ip address, so if it is still
running on your w2k computer, try closing that one.

Not necessarily. Good antenna
installations can also be achieved during rainfall rates exceeding 2 inches per

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: OT Echolink, Win98 and WRT54G

2005-06-12 Thread Frank Romeo
Robert,

I've had this problem here in the past.

Port triggering on the router seems to be the cause of the problem, at
least here. The first PC to use echolink always works fine. Disconnect
the first PC, and attempt to use the second, and you time out. Go back to
the first and it works just fine.

I found I had to reboot the router if I wanted to change PCs.

5200 to 5200 Open, Proto. BOTH, and have it enabled
On Port Triggering I have the same thing on Triggered range and
Forwarded range.
Now it works on a Win2000 machine...but not the Win98 computer. When
I disconnect from the test server...it will repeat disconnected or
time out if I let it run long enough. It is just not fully
connecting up.
:-(

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Xtal freq

2005-06-12 Thread John Place

Was planning to. Was just wondering if the xtals would work in the
Mitrex elements.

Is the freq. of xtals the same in the Micor and MSR-2000 uhf repeaters?

Nope.

The RX in the Micor uses a different IF than the MSR, and
the elements are totally different..

The MSR and the Mitrek not only use the same crystals, they use
the same elements.

Are you replacing a Micor with an MSR ?

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Anyone using the RS 12-249 WX Radio ?

2005-06-12 Thread Coy Hilton
Yep I did for about 6 months to, about 37 years ago. I'm not bashing
anyone Mathew. Too bad about not carring any parts. That's the only
reason that I go. I dont know about now but parts once was the one
product with the highest mark up of anything else in the store about
two to five times as high. I know this to be a fact. Where else
will a lot of hams or kids learning electronics get their parts.

Again TOO bad for us and for them. IT WILL BE THE LAST TIME I GO
THERE.
Unfortunately, most of us know too much about the inner workings of
companies like RS. IF it is not burning the shelves up from sales,
it has to go. the bean counters and MBAs are screwing up the
world.and all for the bottom line...I know, they have screwed up
the MAGIC at the most fun place in the world.

Bashing Radioshack won't help, I've been a manager of one for over

They are a changing store, and it will be soon that they will not
carry any parts at all. I'm told consistantly that my store knows
more than any Radioshack for within 100 miles, but then I play with
this stuff for fun. As I said, Radioshack drives on one thing, and
that is Cellphones. From the inside, you now have the rest of the
story.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: OT Echolink, Win98 and WRT54G

2005-06-12 Thread Coy Hilton
IN short you can run ONLY one instance of echolink at at time per
public IP address. only put the ports in port trigering or the other
which is fixed which is a fowarding to a fixed local IP address. IF
you have more than one public IP address comming to your house then
you can run more. the reason is the UDP protocol that Echolink uses
to send the audio to and from your machine.
Good Luck!

Try going back where you down loaded the free software and look
there read very slowly and you will pick up on the problem real
quick. the problem is as I have said in the other post.

I just did a google search (google is your friend!) and came up
with these
hits; one of them is about firewalls, the other says the error
indicates a
