[Repeater-Builder] Noise on RX when CTCSS LED flickers (RC210)

2005-11-09 Thread georgiaskywarn
I'm not sure if the group members of the RC210 group remembers several
weeks back me mentioning about hearing noise on the RX when the CTCSS
LED is barely flickering.

What happens is the repeater will be idle. The CTCSS LED is
flickering...even just a little bit. If anyone keys up...there is a
background stratching noise (almost like a weak signal) that will be
there. Even with the ID (noise on the ID).

I thought (and several of you) it was the TS32 board that I had in the
GE Mastr II. I took the power off of the tone board...thinking that
would at least cure it till I could get around to fixing it. No
The LED would still flicker and would have noise on the tx signal. I
keyed up the local mic on the repeater...noise was still there. I
unplugged the db9 going from the radio and the controller...noise went
away.

Now...the noise will sometimes go away while a user is using the
repeater and stay gone for quite awhile. When it sits idle...about
75% time will have noise on it when keyed up.

Ideas?
Thanks,
Robert

[Repeater-Builder] TLN5731A / 5732A Micor UHF mobile PL encoder ??

2005-11-09 Thread Paul Kelley
Can anyone help me out with this one?

I have a UHF Micor mobile T34RTA3000AA (450-470 range), exciter is
TLE8423A. I have a manual but the closest model listed has a 'BA'
suffix.

The manual has a fold out page covering TLN5731A and TLN5732A PL
encoder boards, but doesn't explain the difference between them.

I found a picture of a TLN5731A, which obviously will NOT fit this
radio. It has the mounting ears/screws on the opposite side of the
board from the tone reed. They have to be on the SAME side as the
tone reed to fit in this radio.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the TLN5731A and
TLN5732A... or tell me for certain what encoder fits the radio I have?

I'm kludging in a TS32 for now, but would still like to sort out
what encoder actually fits this thing.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: ANI Options

2005-11-09 Thread skipp025
you can use CDCSS in conjunction with MDC1200 ANI
signaling, and I have a commercial VHF system using
 exactly that arrangement, right now.

Consider MDC1200 to be like using telephone modem tones
on the radio. MDC1200 is an earlier Motorola Format
copied by some after-market mfgrs.

ANI can be done in a number of different tone formats
and styles.

Another ANI format is the use of simple DTMF tones. A
number of companies make really nice display decoders
for such a function.

Many newer software driven radios include the dtmf ani
function. Some also include an MSK or MDC type of ANI
option.

The CTCSS/CDCSS squelch control is completely independent
of the MDC1200 or compatible ANI, so there is no issue
there. You may have to fine tune the code delay on the
field units, so that the ANI code is not heard. It only
takes 1/4 second, but some code may leak through.

Another option is to greatly reduce the speaker audio
during the ANI. Helps prevent missed words. ANI can
also take place at the end of a radio transmission.

cheers,
skipp

[Repeater-Builder] Re: DCS and Tone Code

2005-11-09 Thread skipp025
Many of the popular ANI Detectors can/do connect
direct to unsquelched audio sources in the receiver.
The speaker audio doesn't have to be on or open to
have the mdc function work.

The mobile/portable keys, mdc or similar is sent
out well before the distant radios speaker audio
comes on/up at normal volume.

There are cases to be made where voice audio is not
sent as the ANI also has a status message included.

It gets really crazy when the two radios must send
and confirm the receipt of the signaling data as in
some public safety applications.

Kenwood has an ANI, Status and Message signaling system
known as Fleet-sync in two versions. Other companies
also offer similar products.

Just enough going on to keep the average technicians
brain cells in liquid format.

cheers,
skipp
skipp025 at yahoo.com
www.radiowrench.com

Thanks for advices. May be I have to define the
question more clearly: the DCS is for opening the
squelch circuit, and tone code mentioned here is for
  ANI (Automatic Number Identification).

What is the radio internal process to handle these two
functions: does the squelch circuit require to be open
so that the following ANI tone could be detected?
  Best Regards,
  Kent Chong

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Micor 412.XXXX repeater and Syntor X mobile

2005-11-09 Thread vs
420-430MHz is the site-to-site /linking/ band here in SoCal, *not* a mobile
relay/repeater subband. We've had active links on the band for about 40
years. Due to the concentration of radios in our area, it would neither be
practical nor desirable to place repeaters in the 420-430 subband again.
There actually were some repeaters in this subband many years ago, but
these were all phased out by the mid-80s at absolute latest (to my
knowledge). Things are rather complex here as well, beyond the raw numbers.
A number of issues come to mind, some of the most important being
transmitters receivers ending up 1MHz or even 100KHz from each other,
should 420 'repeaters' be put at hilltop sites. It'd cause one big mess!
Juggling link frequencies is plenty of work as it is. No site follows a
single regionwide bandplan, but rather each site has its own bandplan.

Other areas of the country have relatively little utilization in this
subband. As such, I can see its appeal practicality in those areas.
NorCal would have the same basic problem as SoCal. There's both a lack of
real room a general incompatibility, since mobile relay operation is
essentially counter to the purpose of this subband. It's good to experiment
make use of equipment, but we should be careful courteous as well.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] GM300 Squelch Adj.

2005-11-09 Thread Bob M.
Since the radio is so similar to a MaxTrac, I'll
assume it's enclosed the same way. Remove the two
screws from the control head (T15) and the four
flat-head screws from the sides (T10). Pull the
control head off the covers, then pry the covers off.
They're identical and split in the middle of each
side. Sometimes they're hard to get apart, but nothing
else holds them together. Usually you can get them
going by starting in the front where the edge is
exposed over the metal chassis.

If this isn't how they're put together, I'll go have a
look at my GM300 service manual, but I recall opening
one a couple of weeks ago and it sure looks like a
MaxTrac in this respect.

[Repeater-Builder] TKR-820 Timeout Timer Problem - Frustrating!

2005-11-09 Thread N9WYS

Before you all banish me to the outer reaches of Mongolia - or
somewhere else - because of all the questions I keep posing about this machine,
please understand that I have tried to research this issue in the technical
material I have available to me and I keep coming up empty. This is why I
keep prodding. I know there is quite a wealth of knowledge here, so Im
trying to tap into some of that knowledge

That being said, heres the latest on this frustrating
issue. I have a TKR-820 interfaced with a CAT-300 repeater controller.
The CAT-300 operates fine, whether the internal controller is turned ON or
OFF. The only issue I have is with the internal timeout timer.
Previously, the repeater would shut itself down after 2-1/2 minutes when the
internal controller circuitry was turned OFF. (REPEAT button OFF)
The external controller was set for a much longer time, so I knew it wasnt
the CAT-300 causing the problem.

I went to the site a few
days ago, and adjusted the TOT pot on the internal controller to its maximum (5
min). I then made certain that the external controllers TOT was
set shorter (4 min) than the internal one worked just fine. (So I
thought) I departed.

Apparently, I departed
prematurely. (No jokes here, OK? Hehehehe)

Anyway, this evening I
heard two stations using the repeater and at 5 minutes the repeater dropped.
DAMN!! I went back out to the repeater site to trouble check some
more. I found that if I unplug the external controller and have the
internal REPEAT function turned ON, the internal controller controls the
machine I expected this. (Not
what I want!) If I unplug the external controller and have the
REPEAT function turned OFF, the repeater does not repeat plug the
controller back in, and the repeater works. (This IS what I
want!) However, if I dont turn the REPEAT function ON, the
repeater times itself out way too soon I presume that this is because
of the INTERNAL timeout timer

So, how do I totally
disable the internal timeout timer? It is becoming more apparent that the
timeout timer functions in two
ways the first, as a repeater timeout timer (of course); but secondly, as
a stuck mic
timeout timer when the radio is in base station configuration
(simplex operation) This has really frustrated me, and now Im
on a quest to figure out just how to shut that damned internal timeout timer
off once and for all. Any suggestions?? Can I just unplug the
internal controller board altogether?

2005-11-09 Thread kc8rsr
sounds like you need to try to rewire the whole system, separate
the TX and the RX and wire them into the CAT 300 separately.
i have never been fond of systems that use an internal controller.
i would rather have 2 separate radios, one for TX and one for RX
and tie them into the controller.

just my 2 cents worth.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Micor 412.XXXX repeater and SyntorX mobile

2005-11-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Matt (W6KGB),

I remember back in the early 70's when I was in college, a couple of us
guys made a long bus trip from Southern Oregon down to Fresno in May, just
a couple of weeks after the annual Fresno Hamfest. 2-Meter Repeaters were
just really catching on in the rest of the country, and there was a special
FM West, I believe it was called, hamfest in Fresno. I remember Wayne
Green from _73_ Magazine attended the event and spoke at the banquet. He
was pushing 220 MHz at that time, and I still have a 220 MHz T-shirt that I
got from him at the event.

While we were there, I remember that we saw a GRONK van, with a wooden rack
in the back that had about six Motorola Motracs in it (really high-tech
stuff at that time!) and a bunch of control heads, speakers and mics up
front, and the roof covered with antennas. Needless to say, we poor college
students, who were barely able to afford a one-channel 2-Meter Motorola 80D
were quite impressed! We still talk about it once in a while to this day.
It was a great hamfest, and we went back to Oregon all enthused about
putting up our own 146.94 Repeater, as soon as we could afford it.

It was a great day when we bought an old Motorola Sensicon A receiver,
the matching 60-watt transmitter and power supply, and built up a COR copy
of the Motorola tube-type COR circuit (out of The Red Book.) Anyone who
has been involved with Amateur FM back in the 70's will know what the Red
Book and Yellow Books were. Of course, such luxuries like Heliax,
Stationmaster antennas, Duplexers, etc. were out of the question. But the
repeater was born.

Most radios back then in our area (if you had a two-channel radio) had room
for 146.76 Simplex and the 146.34/146.94 Repeater pair. In Oregon, there
were four - 146.94 Repeaters across the State, and a ham group in Southern
Oregon built up tone burst boxes - each repeater used a different tone
burst. The hand-built, hand-tuned (hand picked capacitors for the
oscillator using an 88 mh. toroid) units were sold for $25 each to the
Southern Oregon Repeater Assn. members. I still have mine!

There was one UHF Repeater in Oregon that I know of back then - across the
State up in Portland.

Please excuse the off-topic rant, just seeing the GRONK note reminded me of
the fun we had when ham radio FM was just taking off, and how some of the
Southern California people were really going all out with real high-tech
installations. We could never have foreseen what the FM Repeater activity
would become in later years.

Larry, K7LJ

Hi Paul,
Why not put them on the 420-430 MHz amateur band?

Several states now have 420 MHz fm voice (non-atv) repeaters.

Texas has six, Virginia has two, Ohio has two itinerent 420 machines
that appear at Dayton Hamvention every year, and a bunch in SoCal is
working to coordinate one now in the Los Angeles area. I have heard
of several more under construction.

My local machine is on 420.050 out / 426.050 in w/136.5 Hz tone.
Been on the air for four years not without any interference issues
with local ATV ops.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Micor VHF High Band Repeater Amplifier

2005-11-09 Thread Eric Lemmon
The model number C53RCB-3105AT is for a complete repeater station, not just the
power amplifier. If all you need is the 60 watt continuous duty PA, then look
for
a TLD1703 for the 150.8-162 MHz band, or a TLD1704 for the 162-174 MHz band.
Note
that the 60 watt PA was not made in a version for the 132-150.8 MHz band,
according to my manual.

 GM,

Would anyone have by chance a Motorola Micor VHF High Band repeater
final amplifier, part number C53RCB-3105AT, 60-watts, PL with unified
chassis? If so, please e-mail me off list. A C43, C63 or C73 would also work.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] GM300 Squelch Adj.

2005-11-09 Thread Mike Morris

One trick I've seen:
Take the speaker out of the control head, and drill the
front panel in front of the speaker for a pot and two
mini-toggle switches (one on each side of the pot),
then reinstall the speaker.
The cone shape creates enough clearance for the parts.
Wire one switch as per the squelch mod article at
http://www.repeater-builder.com/maxtrac/gm300-squelch-mod.html,

the other as a PL / Carrier switch, and the pot in place of
the internal squelch control.

Thanks a lot. That worked like a
charm. I needed to lower the squelch as this is the receiver on my
repeater. With the current setting, on a mobile station there is no
swoosh, just chopping in and out. Again, thanks for all the
replies.
