[Repeater-Builder] RE [Fwd: 3SK174 vs BF988]

2008-10-12 Thread jgielis
Greeting fm Down Under..

I sent out a request to this group as below,
but being out of circulation for the last 3 weeks,
I can now expand on my findings, and perhaps an answer
to Geoff Pike and today Ted Sims at tedsims dot com ...wrote in a private
mail:
Anyway, do you still need help with this? What kind of test equipment
do you have?
What's the reason for wanting to change to the BF988? The 3SK174 is a
fine transistor.

Jerry Vogt wrote:
We do have some 3SK174's available now for $16.50.

They can also supply the BF988 for the same price.
Huh??!! If the 3SK174 is obsolete but priced at US$16.50 +PnP
why do they list the BF988 at the same price.
I've since sourced the BF988 locally.

My query was based on the following:
The 3SK174 is a dualgate MESFET
The BF988 is a dualgate MOSFET

I could rave on, but the main concern was the suggestion that the BF988
can replace a 3SK174 but some retuning is necessary.

Hi, can someone expand on the procedure for retuning
a HRG-(VHF) helical resonator when the 3SK174 is replaced with a BF988.

I have recently sent an email to Hamtronics requesting
further info on their suggestion (on their webpage)
that states It may require some retuning, but as yet there has been no
response, except to suggest that they can source both FET's.

[Repeater-Builder] UHF TX Combiner RX Multi-Coupler Wanted

2008-10-12 Thread Paul Metzger
Hello all,

I'm in need of a transmit combiner and receive mutli-coupler for the
UHF Ham Bands. I'm located within the Los Angeles area and am not
interested in buying new (you know us hams). I would like it to be a
real factory built unit (not pieced together).

Please e-mail me direct at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks !

Re: UHF TX Combiner RX Multi-Coupler Wanted

Well... you're not being all that specific about how many
tx channels and antennas you plan to use/operate.

You could make one to fit your needs. The do-it-yourself
4 to 6 channel TX Combiner side starts off by trying to obtain
Motorola T1500 series bandpass duplexers. Step two is a
circulator/isolator for each Tx channel.

Each 4 cavity T1500 Band Pass Duplexer sets up as two or
four tx combiner channels depending on tx power level, the
realistic specs you hope to obtain and the insertion loss.
The real world means you should (with this hardware) really
use two T1500 series BP bottles (cavities) in/for each Tx Path
(along with a circulator).

The Rx side has its own wild cards... depending on how many
receivers, their frequency spacing and location relative to
the tx channels, separate or duplex antenna, receive preamplifiers,
desired protection, the guy down the hill with the 100 watt
remote base, the amount of money you want to spend... regular
or decafe... cream and sugar?

Can you say... Ebay?

...followed by lots of questions to the group and/or guys
who do a fair amount/number of this type of work.

cheers,
s.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] UHF TX Combiner RX Multi-Coupler Wanted

2008-10-12 Thread Eric Lemmon
Paul,

Knowing how cheap Hams can be, I have to wonder how likely it is that a Ham
would have paid to have such units factory-built for the 70cm band- probably
several thousand dollars. Such devices are built to order for specific
frequencies, and it is likely that some expensive rework will be needed to
move them to new frequencies. However, let's be optimistic and concentrate
on the technical issues.

How many TX frequencies do you want to combine, and how far apart is each
from its adjacent frequency? How much power does each transmitter have?
Are there other transmitters at the site, and if so, what are their
frequencies and power levels? Do you already have ferrite isolators and
harmonic filters for each TX frequency?

For the RX multicoupler, how many frequencies do you want to combine, and
what is the spread? How close are other in-band transmitter frequencies?
Does each receiver have an effective preselector front-end, like Micor and
Mastr II radios?

Since you're in the LA area, I suspect that your site is shared with dozens
of other radio services. It is difficult enough to set up a single repeater
pair at a densely-populated site, and setting up a combiner and multicoupler
may be a significant challenge. One option that might be worthwhile is to
piggy-back on an existing transmitter combiner and/or an existing receive
multicoupler. It is more likely that you would be allowed to share a
receive multicoupler, since transmitter combiners have components that are
frequency-specific and very expensive. It can't hurt to ask.

Jerry,

I believe that the Model 1965 was a special design, and not a production
item. Try contacting Sinclair Tech Support here:
