I could be a nice guy and extend my offer if the part you
ordered doesn't work out. Just email me direct...

You'd be smart to change how you view the group messages
from inbound Emails to just reading the group posts on the
yahoo web page for the group messages.

Click on this link or paste it into your web browser of
choice. You can then click to read any post that catches
your fancy.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Repeater-Builder/messages

If you like using the web browser method with the above link,
simply save the link in your bookmarks. Then change your group
member settings from Emailing messages to viewing on the web.
Couldn't be simpler and reviewing older messages that you might
have skipped over (no pun intended, honest) are easily viewed
(in order) using the "older" icon on the right side of the screen
at the top of the message column.

You don't have to then deal with a gaggle of inbound Email
messages that don't interest you.

[Repeater-Builder] MSF5k - No Tx

2010-04-17 Thread Scott Zimmerman
OK, It just may be because it's late on a Saturday night, but I am stumped.

I have a UHF 100W secure capable MSF5000 that when I key the TX (doesn't
matter how of the GOZILLION ways) the 'PA On', 'PA Key' and 'PA Full'
LED's light for a split second and then I get no power out. I am testing
into my service monitor, so high ref. power is not an issue.

I realize that the power control is a loop and I could be chasing my
tail trying to figure out which came first - the lack of power or the
lack of drive. I read in earlier posts something about JU1 being a
service jumper. JU1 in this station is a 3 position header. When I
change positions on that jumper, the station doesn't boot properly,
gives an error, then resets. I don't think I am looking at the correct JU1.

The manual eludes to many troubleshooting charts that apparently aren't
in my book. I think that there were MANY authors and they figured that
"someone else will write that."

For those of you that know me and know what I do, I have never worked on
anything this new. I'm used to the good ol' fashioned radios, where a
strategically placed alligator lead fixed all your power-set ills.

Even a "look at page xx in the manual for a troubleshooting flowchart"
type message would be helpful.

Skipp,

The manual for the HLNB R*I*C*K is 6880901Z79, still available from
Motorola Parts for about $5. Since it is still in print and is copyrighted,
it should not be posted anywhere for download, lest the long arm of the law
be felt by the perpetrators. I suggested to the individual that he contact
the Motorola agent in his country to purchase the document.

http://www.repeater-builder.com/ge/lbi-library/lbi-31853e.pdf seems to be newer

There are no markings anywhere besides on the front which states the above

Any help would be great.

Hi Eric,

The steel cases are not an impediment to the magnetic field, at least not
enough to make retuning impossible. Microwave type circulators are built in
a similar fashion, just smaller, and the technique is well known among those
of us who play in the microwave region. Just to give an idea of the
magnitude of change that's possible, 1.8 GHz circulators can be moved up to
2304, and I have moved 11.7 GHz circulators down to 10368 MHz.

I haven't specifically attempted to move 870 MHz circulators up to 928, but
I see no reason why this couldn't at least be attempted if someone was so
inclined.

If someone wants to attempt it, you can either dissect an unwanted
circulator, or maybe better yet, use some of those extremely powerful rare
earth magnets. I buy 'em by the handful at the county fairs for cheap, just
to have them around for such purpose.

The network analyzer makes it seem stupidly simple, but a SA/TG would work
nearly as well. Just remember to check it both ways before you apply the
glue.

I don't know if this was suggested, but you can buy a cap of larger
value that physically fits the area and then remove a plate/stator or
two to get the proper value.

Removing a plate and/or stator is a trick from way back in ham time when
people scrounged parts and made them work.
