I've already asked the question on other groups (Radio-Programming Fujitsu Radio) to no avail. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Ritron Repeaters
I have one of the early model that I use for portable temporary use at events. Not fancy or a whole lot of power, but does a real good job in that application. I would not want to try to use one in a high RF environment, but for low level stuff they are pretty good and the price is right. Johnny skipp025 wrote: Just relative to your post here... If you're playing with a Ritron Repeater of circa 80's vintage... then you probably have one of two types. The first is the black shoe-box model, which at first glance is considered a toy repeater. Under the right conditions the black shoe-box repeater works pretty well for what it is. Model RR-454 and similar nubers. The second model is the silver face unit... looking more like a desk-top radio... can also be a base station and/or repeater or combinations of both. Both of the above repeaters have what I call cigar tube notch type duplexers, which in the right conditions do work fairly well for their intended application. Most stuffy radio folks without much imagination discount these products as toys. When looking at these items with a more flexible and bean counter eye... the reason why there are a lot of these units out there will become obvious. Remember , the person on the other end is trying to filter the basic facts from all the bs. Johnny The 146.82 repeater in Los Angeles has been on a 30 second timer since the late 1960s. 30 seconds is longer than you think - you can get a lot of info across in that much time if you think before you start talking. I many others have actually timed out that repeater while trying to pass traffic hazard info. 60 seconds is IMO the minimum practical timeout value. I know of no other repeater that had a shorter value except the old WR6ANY on Flint Peak: it was 37 seconds - go figure. Bob NO6B

I agree that re-education of some FCC employees is needed. However, I think it would be nice if the FCC had at least 2 or 3 knowledgable people, that knew what they were doing and only worked with Part 95 stuff. Re: [Repeater-Builder] FAA Paint Removal
Charles, I get the FCC digest and there have been a number of instances where owners have been fined because the coax was not painted to match the tower. Does it make sense? Not really, but that is the FCC. Johnny Charles Miller wrote: Steve, I am not aware of any tower owners being fined for not having the coax painted. The reason for this is that the tower is put up, painted, and lighted before the coax is ever installed. I have also not seen anything in the FCC rules or FAA regulations that require the coax to be painted. On another subject that was mentioned, There are times that a tower does not require painting. I do not remember the particulars for these but it depends on the lighting of the tower, height and distance from the airport. Re: [Repeater-Builder] GMRS Repeater Info Wanted
Kevin, Unlike the Part 97(Amateur)service, Part95 (GMRS) requires that repeaters be type accepted for use in that service. Mobiles are not type accepted for use in the GMRS as repeaters. Johnny Kevin Bednar wrote: There is nothing preventing you from using duplexed mobile gear like Micors or Mastr II's, or Motorola Maxtracs/Radius type radios as GMRS repeaters as long as the station ID'ing is handled properly. Kevin K2KMB From: Mathew Quaife [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, July 11, 2004 9:28 PM To: Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Repeater-Builder] GMRS Repeater Info Wanted Thanks Eric. License I Know is required. Issue that is at hand, I think you answered, is type of equipment allowed. I have read issues where guys are building them out of GE and Micor units, and that is what I want to know if this is allowed, or must it be certain types of equipment. Antenna and cable is already there, 7/8 Andrews and DB 8 Bay antenna, duplexer is something I will purchase after I decide on the repeater. Mathew Before you can put a GMRS repeater on the air, you must have a GMRS license. You also need to read and understand the applicable FCC Rules in Title 47 USC Part 95. The current edition of Part 95 is dated October 1, 2003. A GMRS repeater should be FCC Type-Accepted for Part 95 operation, but you can use a repeater that is Type-Accepted for Part 90. This requirement rules out any repeaters built from parts. Some repeaters that are relatively inexpensive include the Yaesu VXR-7000, the Kenwood TKR-850, and the Motorola GR1225 or RKR1225. The important features to have are a built-in ID-er and the capability to decode CTCSS or CDCSS. You will quickly learn that a good antenna, duplexer, and feedline cost more than the repeater. Although the Part 95 Rules limit GMRS power to 50 watts, there are some high-powered pirate stations operated by unlicensed individuals who ignore all of the rules. I suggest that you not seek advice from such people! 73, Eric Lemmon WB6FLY (and GMRS KAF4211) w9mwq wrote: I have been looking into setting up a GMRS repeater for community access, and have been doing some reading on them. What can be used as a GMRS repeater? And what would be a low cost unit available for such use? Thanks. Mathew Yahoo! Groups Links Yahoo! Groups Links Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! RE: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater for trade
Hi all - I have a weather proof transportable VHF repeater that I would like to trade for a HF radio that also has at least 2 meters and 6 meters included also (440 would be nice). This is a working repeater with the following information -- Transworld Electronics, Inc TM101 transmitter and RM101 receiver --- on a 153 MHz frequency. The 25 watt repeater is rack mounted in a weather proof transportable gray case Model RP-1525 with 1/4 wave antenna included. I do not want to sell this unit, I ONLY WANT TO TRADE IT. In my past memory I once saw this done. I think if you study the specs on the Mitreks you will see this should work. In the GMRS mobiles are allowed 50 watts. I have never heard of a 35 watt limit for anything. Portables are also allowed 50 watts if you want to setup a backpack with an amplifer and battery. Another limit is unless you have one of the old grandfathered business licenses from back in the 80's or before, business use of GMRS is ILLEGAL! Bussiness use of GMRS is NOT illegal as long as each person is licensed. And a business CANNOT now get a GMRS license. GMRS is for individuals for the purpose of conducting FAMILY business, ie, picking up kids, going to the store (using specific item names or specific store names, or how much you paid), ordering a pizza (phone patch is illegal!), what bills you got in the mail, and other similar things that would be illegal on amateur bands. Ham and GMRS should complement each other, as most things that are illegal on GMRS are legal on ham, like phone patch, and casual conversations. Not sure where you are going here, but casual conversations are legal on both bands. Johnny Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Why need a commercial community tone board ?
The primary purpose is for control of the repeater. The OWNER is responsible for ALL transmissions over the repeater. The OWNER or his/her agent must be able to control the repeater at all times. If someone is on the repeater doing ANYTHING that is what the FCC would consider unlawful, the owner is the one who will pay the fine. If it is at your home and you have quick access, that is one thing. You can get by. If it is on a mountain top 30 miles away, you have a problem. If you can't control it, don't turn it on.
