RE: [Repeater-Builder] Re: if you have a commercial license

2010-04-01 Thread Radioman
I've known of some private shops who wouldn't hire a ham because the owner
thought hams did too good of a job. Those owners thought that hams took too
much time trying to get the last tenth of a watt out of a transmitter or too
much time tuning a receiver for that last one hundredth of a microvolt in
receive sensitivity. Thus they spent too much time on a radio to be
profitable.

I'd been a ham for about 12 years when I got my first LMR job (thou I had
previously done LMR in the military). After I had moved on to a municipal
shop, I selected only hams as new employees including a Motorola contract
person.

I also was given the back room portion of the interview at a CB shop once.
The owner gave me a radio to repair that no one else had been able to. I
don't remember its problem, but I had it going in about ten minutes. I got
the job and the owner was not a ham.

When I got a job in the 1970's at a big LMR shop in Southern

Did Fred use locks? Perhaps that was your point. I don't remember locks on
the mobiles or upright base stations that I had. Seems like the mobile
covers went on and off similar to the GE twin coffins (which I don't
remember requiring a key). It's hard to remember the details of those radios
except for the 7 volt tubes.

What's the key number or other stamping? Now I'm going to have to look thru
my key collection and find it. Somewhere I have a picture of me sitting next
to my Link six meter base station, but the radio and all the spare
transmitters and receivers and the mobiles are long gone.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Radio Mobile Deluxe Plot?

2009-05-03 Thread Radioman
You would need to provide more information for us to run the plots.
Including:
Antenna height (looking at your website pictures I presume around 300')
Effective receiver sensitivity (taking into account the noise floor etc)
Duplexer, isolator and any filter losses.
For the other unit, its receive sensitivity, power and height of antenna
etc.
Do you want talk-in or talk-out plots (they won't be the same).
What kind of coverage do you want to plot? Such as 90% coverage, 90% of the
time or something else. Take a look at the possibilities in RM.
As you said RM has a very big learning curve with many different
possibilities and it is very easy to get inaccurate plots.
I didn't follow the part about how you have a picture file from a couple of
weeks ago that you want to move to your site.

Good Morning,

Boy Radio Mobile Deluxe has a big learning curve! I have looked at the
online coverage plot that was listed a couple of weeks ago (great one).
However I can't copy the picture to post on the website.

1. The Short-term Analog Flash and Emergency Readiness Act (Analog
Nightlight Act or

Act)1 requires the Commission to develop and implement a program by
January 15, 2009, to

encourage and permit continued analog TV service after the February 17,
2009 DTV transition date,

where technically feasible, for the purpose of providing public safety
information and DTV transition

information to viewers who may not obtain the necessary equipment to
receive digital broadcasts after

the transition date. In this way, the continued analog service would serve
like a nightlight to unprepared

viewers, assuring that these viewers continue to have access to emergency

with information to help them make a belated transition. This Notice
describes the procedures the

Commission intends to follow to implement the Act; the nature of the
programming permitted by the Act;

and the stations that are eligible to participate in the Analog Nightlight

Stations that cannot broadcast their

own nightlight service can participate in a joint nightlight effort together
with other stations in their

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Colorado Gateway back on-line repeaters up high

2008-10-05 Thread Radioman
I don't know the current situation, but for years the antennas were inside
the building because the Forest Service would not allow them on the outside.
Around 1971 when the 2m repeater was first installed, we couldn't even
acknowledge where the repeater was located. At one time some years back, the
concession at the top of the Peak and also on Mt. Evans west of Denver were
operated by a ham's family.

Bob is correct about the lightning. Many times I've had static buildup
discharging across the end of an unterminated rf connector in a mobile at
that site. Winds and also to a lesser degree icing are big factors on the
Peak.

I replace the Polyphasers at the sites I'm responsible for every two years, or
sooner if a direct strike is suspected. Just because they pass RF OK doesn't
mean they're still doing the job efficiently. I believe it is cheap insurance
even it means replacing a half dozen or more at one site.

I have recently heard that there is a new series on the market which may not
require replacing except after a direct strike. I need to do more research on
those. Maybe someone here has info on those?

Sorry for being a few days behind on e-mail, but...don't those gas tubes need
replacing eventually? Maybe after 8 years, they've given all once too many
times to stay on the job.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Static on grounded feed line system.

2008-04-04 Thread Radioman
I believe you could test them with a Megger, but you would also damage the
device at the same time. If it wasn't damaged before the test, it would be
after the test. That's why I have just replaced them rather than try to test
them.
