Re: [Repeater-Builder] GE MASTR II PWR SUPPLY - What dies first?

2008-08-19 Thread Richard Reese
If it is the factory supply it is the fero resonant one and usually it is the
capacitor that goes bad. I remember the old days of the Goodyear Fest at
Wingfoot Lake!! There was a time when it was the best fest in NE Ohio. Oh
well. Times have changed - even Wingfoot Lake is for sale now.

Sorry but you are a month late. I gave away one a few weeks ago. Hopefully
you can find one local to the Akron area since they a so heavy. I will make a
few phone calls later today - perhaps I can find one for you.

Your basic GE Mastr II rack mount pwr supply (ref PL19D436272G1 Rev
  A) was part of club WA8UXP's 2m GE MastrII (base) repeater (146.985
Mhz) until it started acting up (a few years ago). Basically, the no
load voltage looked ok. But, once the 100w PA kicked in the voltage
swings made a sunami look like a placid lake. Ouch!! It was then
replaced by Astron RS-35A. Now, the club has three (3) choices for
the old fella being: boat anchor/scrap, try to fix, or hamfest sale
  as is.

But option 2, hmmm, if economically repairable, maybe we could put it
back where it belongs (w/ the repeater) and re-deploy the Astron.
Ah, life, so many choices, so little time.

BTW - Thanks for reading this far

So, rather than spend countless hours finding & then pouring over
service manuals for this (potenital) boat anchor we wanted to skip to
the chase and leverge off the experience of others. If you've "been
there, done that, and are willing to pass along words of wisdom" on
this bear then we'd love to hear from you. What two or three things
would you look for to fix in one of these power supplies?

We promise, no response will go unread (honestly)...!

OK to reply to this Yahoo group, or, if you want to take off line
then also OK to respond to Yahoo Group
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or look up my email on

Be happy having a club to help spread the cost out.

I pay $45 a month for electric to sustain two repeaters at one of my sites.
In order to keep the site, I had to purchase a chunk of the land and build a
building, so now there's real property taxes and maintenance to pay as well.
And all the equipment is at my expense.

And there are others I know doing pretty much the same thing.

No club -- it's all out of pocket. Like I said, be happy you've got cost
sharing.

$30 to $50 a month electricity bill is a significant chunk of the clubs
annual revenues. We do have money in the bank though. But these are all the
kinds of numbers we are running through right now to figure out the best
options.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Possible interference on 146.160

2007-11-13 Thread Richard Reese
Bearcat IF was 10.85. Had same problem with 449.2 input of a repeater in
Akron. It was a Bearcat 250 programmed for 460.050 Akron Police Frequency.
You may want to check what you hear on 156.01 MHz.

Do you own a bearcat scanner? I can't remember the IF freq for them right
off hand. 10.8 or 10.7? Maybe even 11. something. I had one that was receiving
a channel in the 150's range and every time it stopped on that channel it would
lock up the 2 meter freq for the duration that it was stopped on the channel!
Drove me nuts for a while till I stumbled on it one day. Lock channel out on
scanner and problem went away. Just a thought.

2007-11-06 Thread Richard Reese
Received this from a friend that works for Motorola.

Motorola USA has announced its intention to launch a tender offer to
acquire a controlling interest in Vertex Standard Co, Ltd. Vertex
Standard is the parent company of Yaesu. Motorola will own 80
percent of Vertex Standard; Tokogiken, a privately held Japanese
company, controlled by current president and CEO of Vertex Standard
Jun Hasegawa, will retain 20 percent, forming a joint venture. The
total purchase price for 80 percent of the outstanding shares on a
fully diluted basis will be approximately US $108 million.
