[Repeater-Builder] Re: Low Band Base Antenna Info Wanted

2008-08-17 Thread mark_n2mh
Thanks to LW, SD, and Eric for answering my request.

Sorry for any confusion, but the antenna as given to me, has no
radials at the present time. I will have to fabricate them.

My original thought was to make the antenna work in its original
frequency range, 30-40 MHz. This would eliminate one variable of
having to make it work outside of its intended range. With the catalog
information from Eric, I've changed my mind and will now proceed
directly to 10 meters as suggested by LW.

I'm interested in using the antenna in the 10m beacon band,
approximately 28.250 MHz. So, as LW suggested, I will cut four radials
for 1/4 wL, which I calculate to be 105 inches. And, Eric's catalog
shows the vertical piece to be 1/2 wL which I calculate to be 209
inches. This will be my starting point. Of course, changing the length
of the vertical element is easier than changing the length of the
radials, so that is how I will tune the antenna to resonance as
suggested by SD.

Since this antenna will only be used for short periods at a vacation
house, I plan to use some inexpensive material for the radials. I
expect Lowes to have 1/4 x 20 threaded rod in 10 foot sections which I
will cut down to size. (You find this long rod in the electrical
department, not the hardware department.) This will save me having to
piece together sections to get the required length. Fully extended,
the vertical element will go to 22 feet. In my case, I only need 17
1/2 feet for 1/2 wL. In the event that the antenna is really a 5/8 wL
beast, that will require 21.8 feet of vertical radiator. So I should
be able to at least see what is happening without having to modify the
antenna since the vertical element will reach 22 feet.

I plan to work on this antenna next weekend. It should be fun to see
how it turns out.

[Repeater-Builder] Low Band Base Antenna Info Wanted

2008-08-11 Thread mark_n2mh
Hello to the Group,

Does anyone have any information or a cutting chart for the following
antenna? I have one and would like to put it into service on 10
meters. It was given to me without any info or radials. It is
definitely used but appears to be intact. A quick web search turned up
nothing.

Sticker Info on antenna:

Antenna Specialists
Dallas TX 75247-6780
ASPA 2010
30-40 MHz
9209508
Serial x-x

It looks like a commercial version of a CB base antenna. The vertical
radiator is a series of telescoping aluminum tubing pieces held in
place with hose clamps. Maximum extended length of the vertical
element is approximately 21 feet. Minimum contracted length is
approximately 5 feet. The antenna uses 4 radials and the radial clamps
appear to accept 5/16 inch rods. (I'm not sure if the radials are
supposed to stick out straight or droop at some desired angle.)

If nobody has any info, does the following tuneup procedure seem correct?

1. Cut a set of radials for 1/4 wL at 35 MHz.
2. Adjust the vertical radiator for best SWR within 30-40 MHz.
3. Measure and record vertical element, radial lengths, and frequency.
4. Scale recorded dimensions to the desired 10 meter frequency.

Thanks and 73,
Mark, N2MH
