[Repeater-Builder] Repeater help needed in Western VA

2010-07-23 Thread Scott Zimmerman
Fellows,

I haven't had any volunteers yet, so I thought I would plead again:

I am writing on behalf of a customer of mine. He bought a 2M repeater
from me and is having trouble getting it going. I think he needs help
getting his duplexer tuned and cabled correctly. He seems like a nice
enough fellow. He had a fall some time ago that fractured most of his
limbs. Needless to say, getting around is difficult.

At any rate, he has a decibel products 6-8" cans that he is only getting
about 60dB of isolation out of. (A local radio shop tuned them. HIHI)

The local guys around him seem incredibly inept when it comes to
repeaters. One of them even told him that his repeater was upside down
because: "that's not how my radio is programmed!!" (upside down between
a mobile and repeater setup)

Is there any list member, or does anyone know someone, that is close to
Big Stone Gap, VA 24219 that might be able to give this fellow a hand?
He looks to be about 2 hours NE of Knoxville. I'm sure reasonable
compensation would be offered. I'd help him out myself, but it's a 7
hour drive for me.

Let me know if you'd be willing to give it a shot and I'll put you in
contact with the gentleman directly.

Thanks,
Scott

2004-01-07 Thread Jim B.
Well---I never said it was a idea...
Actually, they CAN be acceptable ***IF*** you are very careful with
tuning (spectrum analyzer is a BIG must!), and once it's set DON'T TOUCH
IT Oh, you'll probably have to replace ALL the trimmer caps too.
There is ONE on the air I know of in NE Ohio, and it's been on the air
for abt 15 yrs at a very high profile site, co-located with abt 12-15
1/4KW Micor stations, among other things. The tx stays clean enough, and
the receiver is usable, but it's got bunches o' filters and stuff on tx
and rx, besides the 6-can tx-rx duplexer. And at that the rx still gets
crap. But it does run. It does need to be watched on a VERY frequent
basis, too.
For the kind of purpose I was talking about, again once it's tuned LEAVE
IT ALONE and it should be alright. Maybe a pass cavity on the tx
wouldn't be a bad idea tho...

I would say that if he REALLY wants to do SOMETHING with this thing,
it could be xtal'd up on his favorite repeater as a monitor/base. Find
an antenna relay out of a mastr pro or a Mitrek or whatever to put on
the antenna inputs and wire it to the PTT. Put an indoor antenna on it
so you don't have to worry about lightning protection, just enough to
put a good signal into the repeater. Oh, and rip out the internal

2004-01-07 Thread Russ Stafford
Hey Guys,
You can always put up a repeater on 220 or 900 or 1296.
We are having lots of fun with 900 MHz. and yes you can even use a Master II
for a repeater. Lots of radio's for 900
Maxtrac's, Spectra's GTE's and even Johnson and Kenwood's.
Have fun!

No problem Gary, I was just curious. Where I am located though it is a lot
easier to put something on 440 because it hasn't been all used up yet and we
do have some mountains around which help prevent to much interference

up and nothing was available. I too would like to put up a 440 machine but
I don't want to wait until the 22nd century to do it. Your located RF wise,

Sounds like a great money maker. Maybe from the donations taken, I
won't have to beg for money to host the Repeater Builder site next year.

So, this year at Dayton, Repeater Builder will be accepting donations
for the opportunity to smash a Spectrum Repeater with a hammer.

I think you should send it to Kevin so he can hit it with a hammer, when
he is done I will come over and melt some of it with a blowtorch while
he takes the pictures, I am sure someone will step in with a
hammerdrill. Maybe bring it to dayton and charge 1 buck a hit in the
flea market area, you could then buy a converted unit from Kevin.

The reciever is pretty good, but from everything we have found here the
transmitter will work best in the trunk of a tucker torpedo - otherwise
using it as portable ballast from an amphibious car would be the best
way to use it. Both GE and Motorola made a repair kit for the spectrum
radio family, look for a micor or a mastr at a hamfest.

Sometimes it's just better to join up with a compatible group of hams and
help their group. That often becomes a win-win situation - some people have
access to equipment, some have access to good sites, some are great groups
that can expand their system with a few like-minded members helping out the
coffers. I know that if I ever moved to California, several groups that I'd
be bringing my donations of equipment, controllers, etc. to and we'd all be
happy campers.

RE: [[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Help]

2004-01-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Back in the mid-1970's, one of the Central Oregon 2-way radio shops made a
bunch of 2-Meter and 440-MHz Repeaters using E. F. Johnson mobile radios.
They worked extremely well, and many of them are still going strong, all
over the state, never having had a failure. The receivers were extremely
sensitive, selective, and the transmitters survived long, key-down transmit
cycles on very inaccessible remote mountaintops. And they were cheap, even
back then!

Kevin,

Are you looking for 2 meters or 440? You may want to look into a Johnson
530 or 559 depending on which band you want. They are cheap at swap fests
and very dependable, I usually buy them for 5 to 15 dollars. I have been
running one on each band for over five years and zero failures. Don't get
me wrong, I feel there is not much better radio than a GE Master II, I have
several of them also but for ease of conversion and if high power is not
needed you can't beat the Johnson.

Kevin,I know that the RECTUM (oops spectrum) isn't much, but you
mentioned frequency drift. First, you might want to go through the exciter
board and resolder all connections (provided that you've checked the simple
stuff, ie power supply regulation, dirty trimmers, etc.). If that does not
yield anything, then maybe you could replace the trimmer for the xtal as it
could be affected by temperature. Please don't flame me for trying to help

Good luck, If you check with some of your local Motorola shops, Micors are
coming out of service regularly (if any are left, I know we had a few).
Micors and MastrII's in their virgin forms can be had cheap or free in many
cases. Even if you get a mobile style of either, it is good.

Actually, you need to make all these Spectrum bashers happy. Take a picture
of someone taking a sledgehammer to it and email the picture to Kevin so he
can post it on the Repeater Builder's website. Then whenever someone feels
the need, that URL can be posted and everyone will feel better.

Kevin,

Are
you looking for 2 meters or 440?  You may want to look into a Johnson 530
or 559 depending on which band you want.  They are cheap at swap fests
and very dependable, I usually buy them for 5 to 15 dollars.  I have been
running one on each band for over five years and zero failures.  Don't get
me wrong, I feel there is not much better radio than a GE Master II, I have
several of them also but for ease of conversion and if high power is not needed
you can't beat the Johnson.

Now you won't get an argument out of me on that one
VHF Hi and VHF low are pretty much $0 - $25, the mid split VHF low can't
even be given away, but we were originally talking about what I believe was a

You can best modify the spectrum by replacing the following components:
power supply, transmitter, receiver, controller. It should then
perform well if you used good replacement parts.

Good luck,  If you check with some of your local Motorola shops, Micors
are coming out of service regularly (if any are left, I know we had a
few). Micors and MastrII's in their virgin forms can be had cheap or
free in many cases. Even if you get a mobile style of either, it is
good.

Unfortunately, we have NO usable radio right now. The old

Good luck,  If you check with some of your local Motorola shops, Micors are coming out of service regularly (if any are left, I know we had a few). Micors and MastrII's in their virgin forms can be had cheap or free in many cases. Even if you get a mobile style of either, it is good.JamesKevin Bednar wrote:

You can best modify the spectrum by replacing the following components:
power supply, transmitter, receiver, controller. It should then
perform well if you used good replacement parts.

Trace the audio and PTT lines and disconnect the internal controller.
Add your choice of connector(s) to the RX audio out, COR out and PL
decoder out leads and to the TX audio in and PTT leads. Then build
up your own interconnecting cable to go to an external controller.

Missing boards can be acquired, please state what was missing ...

And the PA is repairable, unless it's a lightning strike...

And if it's a high power model, and the final is toasted, you might
actually want to bypass the final and run it at the 40-45w level.

RE: [RE: [RE: [[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Help]]]

2004-01-06 Thread Kim Carr
I've watched this thread and can't resist contributing my experiences.

I supported a Spectrum SCR-1000 VHF repeater for my ham club for more
than 3 years. It never operated to our satisfaction. Key problems:

1. Transmitter spurs caused by leaky caps that overheated.
2. Poor power supply design - Darlington TO-3 pass transistor would fail
short circuit, placing 18V unregulated on the TX and RX.
3. Original receiver was obsoleted by Spectrum as it lacked adequate IF
selectivity. The new RX wasn't much better.
4. Receiver pre-selector had a higher noise figure than the front end of
the RX. The repeater actually heard better without the pre-selector.

We finally dumped it and got a GE 100w Master. After we learned to
improve cooling and run it at 80w rather than to reduce power in the PA,
it was clean and worked flawlessly.

My two cents...

Kim, K5TU

horror stories from many different people about all their problems.
Then he
announced that he thinks he can make one work using better technical

Kevin, for that I applaud you!!! Just a few weeks ago we had a person come on
this mail list, & ask about spectrum repeaters. He was told all the horror
stories from many different people about all their problems. Then he
announced that he thinks he can make one work using better technical standards
(or some foolish statement like that).

Kevin - if you don't have any money to put up a repeater, then you shouldn't
be doing it in the first place. Repeaters are a HUGH money drain if you run
them in even lower quality.

PSSSTT- You'll spend a lot of money in parts and buying people coffee/food
to help you keep that spectrum running. They are crap.

2004-01-06 Thread Kevin Bednar
Unfortunately Joe, everything for this project is being donated for an
OEM/RACES project to improve county coverage, specifically because of the
lack of $$. I also wanted a Mastr II (got one donated but upon further
inspection was missing a board and the PA was toast.) or a Micor but
unfortunately no one was able to donate one. I myself would not want to go
the ebay route because I wouldn't want to screw someone else over with the
same POS problems I'm experiencing with it. Thanks.

Well, if you really have the 'anatomy' to do this: Sell it on eBay, take the
money, and buy something that will work much better. (such as a used MASTR
II or Micor)

Personally, I wouldn't do that to someone else, but it is your choice.

Here is what I'd do:
(in the short term)

1.) Take the Spectrum exciter out and throw it away.
2.) This next step is optional:
Smash it with a hammer so you never have any thoughts of reinstalling
it.
3.) Install a used Hamtronics exciter in its place.
4.) Gut out the old control and power supply circuitry from the
Spectrum.
5.) Install a NHRC-4 controller.
6.) Hook it to a Astron RS-35A/M power supply.

(in the long term)
1.) Save some money.
2.) Throw everything except #5 and 6 away above.
3.) Build or buy a real repeater.

No I'm not joking.

[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Help

2004-01-06 Thread kbednar99
Ok, at the risk of being flamed I am gonna' ask this question
anyway. ;) I have inherited a Spectrum Communications SCR-4000
repeater. Receive seems to work fine but the TX freq drifts after a
few minutes no matter how many times I reset it. It has the TCXO
option in it but it doesnt seem to matter. Any Ideas on what might be
causing this? Spectrum has been LESS than helpful, other than to
say "we discontinued it over 10 years ago and can't help you" and "we
can sell you a manual if you want though!". Thats great. Also, does
anyone know what mods are needed to run this unit with an outboard
controller, as the Spectrum one sucks. Any and all help is GREATLY
appreciated!

If it hasn't been pointed out previously, a visit to the
repeater-builder web site would be the second or third place to take a
virtual trip into repeaters. The first 2 places would be equipment
manufacturers web sites to gain some idea on the cost of new and another
would be with a tower maintenance company who would be hired to get you
the antenna site. Having visited the first 2 you will have an idea of
the capital required to begin your adventure, the making of a repeater
is not as easy as picking fresh fruit at the local market, when you can
be more specific with troubleshooting help needed there is a good host
of help here to bring you out of the stumbling blocks and remind you
that the majority of the trouble with a repeater is either the tower
site can't hear or is too close to another one like yours and you will
be sitting inside of innermod alley - or just another 2-3 hundred hours
needed to build that unique bandpass-reject filter to help the cavity
style used by everyone. In some cases they go up and stay on the air
without much extra tuning, these were thought out slowly after many
hours of research which is where you are beginning.

I am hoping to find some help on building or buying my own
repeater. I have a few questions to ask:

A. Where can I buy a repeater?
B. Does it come with everything I need?
C. How hard is it to setup? How long does it take?

I guess we can start there, for now.
