[Repeater-Builder] Dayton Hamvention Shipping (the easy way...)

2008-04-27 Thread skipp025
Dayton Hamvention Shipping (the easy way...)

I've found the easy way to deal with sending things back from
Dayton. Take shipping tape, pre-made address labels and related
items with you.

Box up whatever you want to send back... drive to the nearby
Airport Fed Ex Office and send everything back to yourself
Fed-Ex Ground. Use your own account if you have one.

I do it every time... works great. Later in the week when I'm
back to ground zero nice boxes of boat anchor stuff and toys
arrive without fail.

cheers,
s.

Uniontown Amateur Radio Club (W3PIE) received ours friday last week. It's a
shame that an order placed in mid February took until last week to get
confirmation that our stuff had been received by Dayton Flea Market

[Repeater-Builder] Dayton Hamvention space - ticket Information

2006-05-10 Thread skipp025
A number of you have been emailing me off the list about
your Dayton Hamvention Space(s) & Tickets. I emailed my friend
behind the scenes about people reporting their tickets not yet
received. He replied with the following information. Please
don't email me past this point. I really want to drop out
of the loop, but I'm trying to be helpful to those of you
who are worried about your Dayton trip. I of course will
see you there. Onward...

[paste]

Any orders received after 5/2 will be held at the F/M
office. That being said, there will be a drive through
pickup window as in past years to speed up that process.

Here is the contact info.

Try 937-276-6933 to start. That number should be answered
by someone who can advise status of spaces, and whether
packet was mailed or held.

If result is unsatisfactory or complex questions involved,
937-276-6932 will ring the Flea Market chairman's cell
phone directly.

Of course, we do not take this situation lightly, and everyone
up to the General Chairman is very unhappy about the way
things have been handled. In our 55 or so years of putting
on this show, we have been proud of our efforts to communicate
with our visitors, and realize that this is a major blemish
on our reputation. The GC has indicated that it WILL NOT be
tolerated next year.

Regards,

[end paste]

So there you go...
cheers,
s.

I would agree with that, although there would need to be something in
place to verify it's a real club and not just something someone made up.
Sorta like many of the 'clubs' that show up next to a repeater entry in
the ARRL directory.

At a minimum, there should be an exception for clubs. One club I belong to
recently cleaned out its shack & sold the excess at the local swap
meet. It took at least 3 spaces.

Given the growing number of unsold spaces at Dayton, it seems unwise to
chase anyone away for any reason other than selling non-electronic related
items, which there seemed to be quite a bit of going on last year.

Regular Admin. I was told in an email from Dayton that they would start
mailing out tickets on 01 April. These were postmarked 10 Apr. I know that
you were asking about Vender tickets but just thought that maybe this would
shed some light on the subject.

Good luck and maybe we will see so for the reflector members there.

Dayton Hamvention Reply back (as requested)

My friend Tom replied with the following information:

Hi Skipp...
The pricing scheme for flea market spaces had been in place for
many, many years, and is intended to discourage the larger
vendors from hogging all the spaces, while keeping things less
expensive for the guy who just wants to sell a few things he's
had lying about in his shack. Interestingly enough, the average
vendor buys just over two spaces ( kinda like the average American
family has 2.4 kids!). Also, this means that the vendors who
buy a lot of spaces, and generally require a bit more attention
and effort from the committee, pick up their share of the costs.

The comment about the 2-way shops is pretty astute, and is also
true for the build-your-own computer parts places, who have a
tough time competing with a $400 pre-assembled PC.

There is also the e-bay factor, although that seems to work both
ways, as I have had several people tell me they buy things there
for the purpose of bringing them to Dayton to resell.

The right place to go for information is [EMAIL PROTECTED],
but if that isn't getting any response, send a message to chair@

Has anyone received anything yet?

This will be my 17th year at Dayton. For at least the last 10 years
we've always had the same fleamarket spaces. Last year, we didn't get
our fleamarket tickets or entrance tickets. I called, faxed, emailed,
probably ten times, and it wasn't until the Monday before the event that
I got a call-back saying that they were having problems getting tickets
out in time, and that I'd have to pick them up at the fest on Thursday
when I got there.

This year, I didn't even receive the usual sign-up package which usually
came in December in previous years. I called, faxed, emailed, and never
heard back. Finally I gave up and downloaded the forms from their web
site, filled them out, and faxed them in. I still don't know whether or
not they received it or processed it.

Dayton is always a good time, even in the years with lousy weather, but
they need to make some improvements in the "customer service" side of
things...

Also, only Micor era or newer - no Motrac, Motran, or T-power.

I'm also looking for ANY VHF GE PLL channel elements (ICOMS) below 150

I've been attending Dayton since 1974. This year, I've had two folks
contact me to see if I had gotten my tickets yet, as they have not
received any word.
They need to be more prompt about communications, or they are going to
piss a bunch of folks off.
Scotty, did we get our tickets/spaces yet? (we hadn't the last time we
conversed about it)

With that being said, Last year had shown some much needed change in the
way the event was run. IMHO It was the best Dayton Hamvention in 15 years.

I'll agree with Tony to a point ...  not all women want a ham license
but I would go against the carnival, reason, their saftey record, and
too many litigation lawyers and it would be bad publicity once you have
an injury or death, I talked to a Ex - Carnie once he told me the
company he left had alot of equiptment that needed repairs.  Ask
yourself woulfd you let your child ride a peice of crap ?

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Dayton Hamvention Input Wanted.

2005-11-17 Thread Rod Lane
Some time ago my wife mentioned that IF she were ever to come to Dayton
during the Hamvention, she'd probably spend time at Wright-Patt. There's
lots to see there, including several former Air Force One aircraft.

Dayton Hamvention Input Wanted.

My friend Tom is directly involved with the Dayton
Hamvention. His position in the 2006 year project
is more toward the public relations side.

He has asked me to poll you folks for new ideas,
opinions and information for the 2006 Hamvention.

The primary goal of this poll is to source ideas,
which will be used to make the whole Hamvention
event more attractive to non-hams... ie spouses
and persons not normally attending the Hamvention.

The quesion is: "What would it take to get your
spouse to want to come to the Dayton Hamvention or
spend time in the Greater Dayton Area while you
attend the event?"

We're looking for ideas regarding things we can offer
at the Hamvention and off site. One example might
be a special shuttle service to available local
shopping, tours of historical locations and culture.

A new well posted list of non Amateur-Hamvention events
and resources will probably be started and expanded
with all the available input we receive.

This is just the starting point for this poll. The
grass roots operation of the DARA people means they're
trying hard to return the Hamvention to its more fun
mode and they are looking for ideas to offer up to
the public.

I'll forward anything you want to send in, even the
gripes and groans from past troubles that would result
in making the future Hamventions better.

One report I sent in from last year was related to the
available Disabled Persons Electric Carts. Understand
some of those resources are provided by the HARA Arena
People and not related to Hamvention. So the feedback
was received and sent in... how that information is used
might not be under the control of the DARA People.

Thanks much... DARA would like to know what it's going
to take to make your non-ham spouse or friend interested
in going to the Dayton Area or attend the Hamvention
while your in town?

Please reply direct back to me and I'll forward your
ideas and comments along.

thanks
