Not a bad thought, but D-Star has almost no hang-time compared to an adjustable 
hang-time on an analog system.  Therefore, by running the amp in FM mode or 
using the external key line, the relay would be subject to much more switching 
than it currently is in SSB mode with the approx 750ms delay.  Sometimes, if 
someone is quick on the key on a reply, the amp will remain engaged.

I did think of that option as well, but wasn't sure if that would burn out the 
relay or not.  I guess if it's just a magnetic field holding a switch open then 
there shouldn't be any problem with that.

The "tuneup" pdf actually has a typo on the last page referencing a 108g
amp.
My 108g say:

Ssb delay: it can be accessed through the right side of the cover in a
position that is located halfway between the front and rear of the panel.

Or the constant energized option.
