I think you meant to say "have NOT been deemed fit for posting", as a
complaint but your messages (all three of them) came through fine.

Depending on the mode you're configured in, YahooGroups doesn't always
bounce back your own messages to yourself -- and even when it does,
things show up at strange times for everyone on the list. It's a free
service, "whatcha-gonna-do"?

Give it a few days. If there's someone in Florida who can help you,
they'll answer.

You might provide more detail, like whether the project is ham or
commercial (I guess we can assume ham from the 220 MHz thing) and
whether or not you already have a coordinated repeater pair and
working repeater, etc...

But in general -- finding another repeater person there in Florida
shouldn't be too hard. Key up a local repeater (preferrably 220 since
220 enthusiasts often are more prone to being willing to help one
another), copy the callsign, and look the owner/operator up. If they
got theirs going, they probably can tell you who tuned up their
duplexer and/or put you in touch with that person, right? It's
probably them, in many cases. Buy 'em beer, be nice to 'em... they
will probably say "Come on over", if you sound like the duplexer
tuning is all they're going to need to do. If you sound clueless
about repeaters, they're going to be wary. Just be honest up-front
with them if you don't know what you're doing, and it'll go better.
Enthusiasm may not be something they have much of anymore, or they
might be the superhero of local repeater help, you just can't tell.
But with a callsign, at least it's not a cold call to someone... you
know they have a working (220) repeater.

There's also always the "commercial" option... a local 2-way shop or
similar...

Okay, lots of options. Don't worry -- your message got through, let's
see if anyone can help in your area, then go from there...

Once you switch to DC, your fluctuations should be at a minimum.

Dayne,

No, the majority of voltage readings taken during alignment are DC, and
should be made with a high-impedance DVM or VTVM. The only AC
measurements needed are for squelch setting. This info comes from my
PPL-6060 service manual.

Most DVMs don't function well in a high RF field, so keep your handheld
radio away from it while taking readings.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Test measurements

2004-10-10 Thread Mike WA6ILQ

One trick on setting up a RX using a improvised sig gen...
After the receiver is tuned into the neighborhood, don't
use the TX in the handheld. Look up in your owners
manual and find out what the radio uses for the high IF and
calculate what frequency you'd punch into the RX to place
the local oscillator right on the frequency of interest.
Then use the LO as a source for the final tuning.
You may have to use a scanner if your handheld won't
go there.

  To all list members -

Please keep a close eye out for the following items which were stolen
from my work vehicle this past Wednesday evening 12/3/08 in central
  NJ:

  Motorola R2670A service monitor, SN496KWN0084
Bird 43 wattmeter in case with 5 900MHz range slugs
Bird 43 wattmeter # 2 in case with 5 VHF & UHF range slugs
Dell laptop computer with Sprint wireless card, USB drives, etc, all
inside a Targus leather laptop case
Old (otherwise worthless) Epson 386 laptop loaded with RSS software,
and a Motorola RIB with cables, all inside a Targus canvas laptop case
  DeWalt cordless drill
  Craftsman 3/8 power drill
  Craftsman 200pc socket set
  Misc bit and driver sets
  And a few other
Sony DSC-S750 digital camera in Sony soft case
Magellan Roadmate 1412 GPS receiver with bracket/cord
  Plus a few other items.

A $500 reward is being offered for any information which leads to an
arrest of the responsible perpetrator(s). There were a few witnesses
to the crime, but they didn't think anything of it at the time.
Amazing! What a hell of a way to start the Christmas holiday!

<---This "ad", posted by "frase_0174" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, is most
definately bogus, as it the poster.

It appears to be a case of identity theft and, according to a phone
conversation I just had, has been turned over to Yahoo, PayPal and local
law enforcement.

Just in case anyone had any doubt :-)

Try measuring a shorted coax.

Hi all,

I've been trying to figure out how, using relatively simple equipment,

to determine proper cable length for one-quarter wavelength cables of a

given type of cable (i.e.: RG-400). One of my thoughts was to measure

the open circuit resistance using an older MFJ-259, however this results

in strangely low impedances that I believe hamper proper readings.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out if I need to cut the cable shorter

or if it's too short, and right now nothing I have gives me any clue as

to exactly where it is, short of transmitting a few watts and watching

the SWR as I change frequency.

Try this...

First get the 1/4 wave length in free space for your frequency from this link:

http://www.csgnetwork.com/freqwavelengthcalc.html

Then multiply by the velocity factor of the cable you are using which should
get you really close to what you want.

For example 146.000 MHz = 20.21917808219178 inches X .695 for RG-400 =
14.0523287671232871 inches for 1/4 wave.

14.052 Inches of RG-400 should be very close to a 1/4 wave @ 146.000 MHz.

I used this method to make some 1/4 wave jumpers using Andrew FSJ2-50B and when
we checked the cables with a very expensive piece of test gear I was only 2
degrees off from a perfect 1/4 wave on my frequency.

  CABLE VF
  RG-8 .66
  LMR-400 .85
  RG-8X .84
  RG-11 .75
  RG-58 .66
  LMR-195 .83
  RG-59 .82
  RG-62 .84
  RG-174 .66
  RG-213 .66
  RG-214 .66
  RG-217 .66
  RG-218 .66
  RG-316 .79
  RG-400 .695
  LMR-500 .85
  LMR-600 .86
  1/2 HARD .81
  7/8 HARD .81
  LDF all ver .88
