After all is done and on tape, clear the holding drive. Yes, please! That is the one thing that puts Amanda in front of Retrospect (for the platforms it supports ;). 1) Parallel backups of multiple clients. I don't see how one could do parallel backups to tape efficiently, but to a holding disk is a different story. Once it's done the holding disk gets transferred to tape and cleared off for the next round of backups. 2) Increase speed of backups. Local hard drive to local tape drive is much faster than remote client direct to tape. The tape drive can then run at its maximum speed if everything is done locally. Also allows for more efficient use of tape. On our R3 server (2x PPro 200, 768 MB RAM, RAID 1+5, DLT on separate controller), Retrospect is shoeshining the DLT when backing up the D drive with lots of little binaries and config files; I get ~20MB/min. A holding disk would be a real gain there. 3) If Retrospect needs more tapes, backups can still proceed to the holding drive rather than be halted completely until more tapes are available. So, what does everyone think? Good idea or not? Great idea. Though I am not sure they see the problem at Dantz: I had a Dantz representative tell me that RS would have no problem with keeping a DLT streaming over 10BaseT... hauke -- Hauke FathTangro Software Components GmbH D-69115 Heidelberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ruf +49-6221-13336-0, Fax -21 -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Search: http://www.mail-archive.com/retro-talk%40latchkey.com/ For urgent issues, please contact Dantz technical support directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 925.253.3050.

Yep. The moment you interleave backups to holding disk and dumping (finished) backups from there to tape, you gain. I'm not sure about the problem with speed, I think tape drives can keep up with network speeds though I can't tell you that for certain. It's the other way 'round: High end tapes (DLT, AIT) are faster than the filesystem/network combo. hauke -- Hauke FathTangro Software Components GmbH D-69115 Heidelberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ruf +49-6221-13336-0, Fax -21 -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Search: http://www.mail-archive.com/retro-talk%40latchkey.com/ For urgent issues, please contact Dantz technical support directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 925.253.3050.

Regards, Irena Solomon Dantz Technical Support 925.253.3050 Yes, it is possible. Since the AppleTalk can be on a different interface than the TCP/IP, just set the AppleTalk control panel to use internal and the TCP/IP to use the card. I was just wondering - this is just a thought. Would it be possible to have retrospect backing up through two netwrok cards - that is my 7200 has two etherenet cards the n built 10 base and an additional 100 base network - woudl it be possible to have retrospect work through both, backing up the slow appletalk network clients through the 10 base onto tape and the fast 100base etherenet card taking care of my dtp clients straight onto a fast scsi disk drive? Is that possible? Re: default path for catalog?
Hi Maxine, When I create a new backup set, the default path for saving the catalog seems to be C:\My Documents. Is there any way to change this default? Unfortunately, no, AFAIK. Retrospect takes the path from Windows and don't have a default itself. The only way is to change your default document path for Windows. Fortunately as a personal user I don't need to create new backup set too often. -- Best regards, Ming-Li -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Search: http://www.mail-archive.com/retro-talk%40latchkey.com/ For urgent issues, please contact Dantz technical support directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 925.253.3050.
Feature Request: Format Progress
Hi, I have learned that it takes up to 40 minutes to format a CD-RW and several minutes to format a tape. When formatting media, we have that little radar screen spinning around. This doesn't offer much information in the way of progress. It would be nice if we had a progress screen to show how much has been done and how long we have to wait. Re: Backup problem
Hi Julian, First ensure that the matching options for your scripts have not been changed (Edit - Script - Options - [More Choices] - Execution . Matching). Next, the quickest test is to go to the Reports - Contents window, select your backup set and pick a session in which Retrospect tried to back all the files up again, then pick a session just prior. Select a file that Retrospect tried to back up again from each session and get properties. Compare these windows and you should be able to discern what changed that caused Retrospect to want to back up all the files again. If you're still having troubles pinpointing what's happening, please give Technical Support a call directly. HTH! I am using NFS client software on my NT server to mount the volume and I am running Retrospect Server 1.51. I am performing a normal backup and all files are being copied and matched to previous backups perfectly. A problem occurs when I reboot the VMS system. Retrospect decides to backup every file again. It seems that Retrospect is not matching the selected files to the previous backup catalogue properly. Snapshots of previous sessions confirms that there are not changes to file dates, sizes or names after the reboot. -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Search: http://www.mail-archive.com/retro-talk%40latchkey.com/ For urgent issues, please contact Dantz technical support directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 925.253.3050.
Re: multiple sets on single media?
Hi Maxine, Retrospect looks at each tape as a member of a single backup set, so you may not use that tape for more than one backup set. One of the primary reasons for this is that allowing this would negate the security of having multiple backup sets in the first place. If your tape is damaged, you lose all your backup sets. For maximum security, have rotating tapes from multiple backup sets. Regards, Irena Solomon Dantz Technical Support 925.253.3050 Try our new Searchable Knowledgebase at: http://partners.dantz.com:591/faq/ I have a high capacity tape drive (80gb) and only about 15gb of data on my hard disk. RE: multiple sets on single media?
The key here: you have to think about Retrospect differently than Backup Exec or ARCserve. Retrospect tracks every file copied to each backup set. So, the first time you back up, every file that matches your criteria is added to the set. The next time you back up (assuming normal backups -- not new media or recycle/full) only those files that are new or different are copied. If you want to back up more than one disk (or more than one computer), the process is the same. Retrospect looks at each disk to see what files are unique and are required by the backup set to be complete. So -- another answer to your question could be: you can store as many different backups onto a single backup set as you want -- but by default, Retrospect will only copy unique files to the backup set. (If you want more than one copy of a file, use more than one backup set as Irena mentioned below.)
