It's a good point - I'm sorry that I made an assumption that there is
awareness about this RIPE NCC activity:

we have been discussing the "Internet in Country X" for multiple years
now, but it used to be called "Member Lunch" when we could travel.
During 2020, this turned into "Open House" format -- and we've had many
in 2020; the 2021 started with "Internet in Iceland" , Turkey was next,
and there are several more already scheduled; you can see the list here:

https://www.ripe.net/participate/meetings/open-house

I hope this clarifies that there is no specific "issue",
it's a way to both support local communities, and collect feedback -
in a forum smaller than RIPE Meeting, or even Regional Meting.

Vesna

this was, indeed, the reasoning behind my decision to both create a
wikipedia page for Atlas AND keep the list of research paper there.

Wikipedia is
* better known
* editable by "everyone"

I prefer if the labour of collecting information is distributed, not
centralised.

(we used to collect the papers on RIPE Labs... but that didn't scale either)

So let me repeat the link, just in case:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIPE_Atlas#Research_papers

And my feature request is: someone to write a scraper / API / listener,
so that every time a new edit is made to this Wikipedia collection,
there's an email sent to the atlas-users list!

[atlas] RIPE Atlas Probes at Hackerspaces

2016-12-28 Thread Vesna Manojlovic

Dear all,

here is an example of the possible communities that are now easier to
build around RIPE Atlas probes.

With the tagging of similar probes, existing communities can use
additional tools for creating and analysing RIPE Atlas measurements,
such as "IXP Country Jedi", to create their own interpretation of the
available data.

The example we used is - hackerspaces: "community-operated physical
places, where people share their interest in tinkering with technology,
meet and work on their projects, and learn from each other."

We are hoping this is going to be an inspiration to the reader,
and an invitation to play with the results and improve on the code.

[atlas] Success Story: Zoom-in on Germany

2016-12-09 Thread Vesna Manojlovic

Dear community,

we wrote an article as an example of how cross-pollination between two
or more communities can create success. An overlap between IETF
participants, RIPE Atlas users and listeners of a popular German podcast
has led to growth in the deployment of RIPE Atlas probes.

We are still interested in expanding this platform in areas and networks
that need more coverage.

For pictures & links, go here:
https://labs.ripe.net/Members/becha/ripe-atlas-success-story-zoom-in-on-germany

Text is bellow.

Regards,
Vesna

In July 2016, during the IETF meeting in Berlin, the popular "rfc
podcast" had a special episode aired an interview with Daniel Karrenberg
talking about the RIPE NCC and RIPE Atlas.

Thanks to the podcast listeners, and with the help of promotion on
Twitter, the episode prompted many, many, MANY applications for new RIPE
Atlas probe hosts.

Because of both summer vacations and a temporary shortage of probes,
there was a delay in shipping - but when the new batch of probes arrived
at our office, we started shipping them to applicants, most of whom were
from Germany.

Currently, with regard to the number of active probes, Germany is
leading with more than 1,000. This is more than the USA, which was in
the lead for the previous few years.

If you want to zoom in to this success-story, you can take a look at
this RIPEstat widget. There you can see that, between 22 September and 7
October, the number of activated probes jumped from 999 to 1,157.

Thank you to all the hosts, in Germany and elsewhere, who are helping to
build RIPE Atlas - the largest active measurements platform!

Actions

Although we are happy that there is so much enthusiasm in Germany, we
are still interested in increasing diversity of coverage. To this end,
we're looking to reach out to:

- Regions, countries and areas within countries with fewer probes
- Networks (ASNs) with fewer probes
- Deploying RIPE Atlas anchors instead

If you would like to apply for your own RIPE Atlas probe, there is a
special link just for the readers of this RIPE Labs article :)

If you already have a probe, and want to get in touch:
- Check out the Community pages
- Follow us on Twitter

[atlas] Join RIPE NCC IXP Tools Hackathon, 22-23 October, Madrid

2016-08-15 Thread Vesna Manojlovic

Dear colleagues,

together with Euro-IX, Comcast and ISOC, the RIPE NCC is hosting a
hackathon in the weekend before RIPE73, in Madrid.

For a change, the event will *not* be focused on RIPE Atlas _only_,
but on IXP-related-tools.

In addition to RIPE Atlas data, we will use RIS data, PeeringDB data,
existing software tools that deal with IXP-data-integration (such as IXP
manager, IXP-Countri-Jedi...) in order to solve some of the challenges
that operators have when making peering decisions, and to illustrate the
impact of IXPs on the Internet routing and connectivity.

We are looking for designers and developers, students and network
operators, and of course colleagues from IXPs, to work together on
hacking the new & old toolsets and visualizations!

[atlas] Troubleshooting USB stick issues - reaching out

2016-07-07 Thread Vesna Manojlovic

Dear colleagues,

recently, some of the third version of RIPE Atlas probes have had an
issue with their USB sticks.

We're still investigating what may be causing this issue,
and in the meantime we have a possible solution, outlined in this RIPE
Labs article (and below in the email)

https://labs.ripe.net/Members/philip_homburg/troubleshooting-ripe-atlas-probes-usb-sticks

These steps might not be a surprise to the users on this list,
but on the 4th of July we reached out to almost 5000 hosts of
"abandoned" probes, and we see immediate positive results!

As you can see from some screenshots I quickly made,
number of active probes have increased - from 8883 on 1st July,
to 9323 this morning. Allowing for normal fluctuations,
this is still a considerable increase -- and we are grateful!

Thank you for all the effort that you put into keeping the
RIPE Atlas network strong by keeping your probes connected.

Kind regards,
Vesna (and the RIPE Atlas team)

===

Steps to power-cycle probe without USB stick:

1. Unplug the probe from its power source
2. Remove the USB stick from the probe
3. Plug in the probe WITHOUT the USB stick
4. Wait for ten minutes
5. Insert the USB stick

After an hour, check SOS-messages & "Status" tab

Note: Only on a network with working DHCP.
If you have configured probe to use static IP,
this setting would be lost if trying the steps.

If this didn't help, try using a new, brand-name USB stick that is at
least 4GB in size (it does not need any preparation but its contents
will be erased so make sure it does not store anything crucial)

If the problem is still there, please contact us at at...@ripe.net

We have moved away from the "doughnut" coverage map, since the user

with zooming in & out taking lots of resources.

It's interesting to see that now there is a demand for such a map...

Let me point you out to some Free Software tools that might help:

[atlas] Fwd: New on RIPE Labs: Support for Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) in DNS Resolvers as Seen by RIPE Atlas

2016-03-21 Thread Vesna Manojlovic

Dear colleagues,

Please find this new article on RIPE Labs contributed by Maciej Andzinski:

The Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) is becoming increasingly popular
in DNSSEC. While it is sometimes considered to be a remedy for the low
DNSSEC adoption rate, there is also a lot of controversy around it. One
of the main concerns is that DNSSEC-validating resolvers don't always
make use of ECC. We used RIPE Atlas to measure the support for ECC in
DNS resolvers.

[atlas] Using DomainMON instead of DSNMON

2015-12-22 Thread Vesna Manojlovic

Hi Klaus, all,

On 22-dec.-15 06:23, Klaus Darilion wrote:

Any plans to offer DNSMON also for the ngTLDs (maybe as paid service)?

For all those who do not fulfill current criteria, there is another way
to use features of DNSMON -- it's called DomainMON:

https://atlas.ripe.net/domainmon

This enables all RIPE Atlas users to specify, as a target of
measurements, their own domain: second level, third level,

or "ngTLD" (or "vanity domains" as I like to call them ;-)

Measurements are performed from probes instead of anchors, and need to
be "paid" by user's own credits.

More details:
https://labs.ripe.net/Members/suzanne_taylor_muzzin/ripe-atlas-domainmon-is-here

In order to earn more credits, users can:
0) have the credits transferred to them by another generous user
1) be an LIR/member, and claim 1.000.000 credits each month
2) host one or multiple probes
3) host one or more anchors
4) sponsor an anchor
5) become a sponsor for RIPE Atlas by "adopting" the probes, or
distributing their sponsored probes themselves:

https://atlas.ripe.net/sponsors

Regards,
Vesna

ps

Klaus, if you think that the "ngTLDs" should be treated differently,
please re-start the discussion on DNS-WG mailing list; after that, this
would have to be approved by RIPE NCC membership since DNSMON is, in a
way, "subsidized" by "free credits" from the RIPE Atlas system, since
ccTLDs are considered important infrastructure "for the god of the
Internet".

[atlas] CAIDA BGP Hackathon 6-7 Feb 2016 -- Call for Participation

2015-12-09 Thread Vesna Manojlovic

Hi everyone,

as a continuation of our own successful RIPE Atlas events,
we are now taking part in CAIDA's BGP "live" hackahton, by providing
data, measurements platform, expertise -- and you ;-)

RIPE NCC's services, such as RIS & RIPE Atlas, will be "remixed" with
other BGP-related data sources & tools, to create wonderful new hacks.

As participants in RIPE Atlas community, you are very much invited to
take part in this event. Details are below.

Regards,
Vesna

 Forwarded Message
Subject: [mat-wg] CAIDA BGP Hackathon 6, 7 Feb 2016 -- Call for
Participation

Date: Tue, 8 Dec 2015 20:37:49 -0800
From: Alberto Dainotti
To: mat...@ripe.net

What: CAIDA BGP Hackathon, Call for Participation (CFP)
When: Feb 6-7, 2016
Where: the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) on the University of
California at San Diego (UCSD) campus.
Who: Parties interested in hacking on live BGP data.
Inquiries: bgp-hackathon-i...@caida.org
Important Deadline: Dec 22, 2015 for travel grant requests
Apply to attend: http://www.caida.org/workshops/bgp-hackathon/1602/

CAIDA, in cooperation with CSU, USC, UFMG, FORTH, Route Views, RIPE
NCC, will host a BGP Hackathon on the 6-7th of February 2016 at UC San
Diego (La Jolla, CA, USA).
The theme of the hackathon is “live BGP measurements and monitoring”.

We will provide participating teams with access to data sources and a
toolbox: live streaming of BGP data, the new BGPMon interface, BGP
processing tools and APIs such as the opensource BGPStream software
framework, the PEERING testbed, RIPE RIS, visualization tools, and
data-plane active measurement platforms such as CAIDA Ark and RIPE
Atlas. Participating teams will work on "challenges" that extend,
integrate and demonstrate the utility of these platforms/data for
understanding or solving practical problems (e.g., detecting BGP
prefix hijacking, evaluating anycast performance, effectively
visualizing phenomena).

The hackathon will be held in San Diego the weekend immediately
preceding the NANOG conference and the AIMS academic Internet
measurement workshop.
The hackathon aims to:
- bring together these different communities, e.g., to discuss
  problems operators face that academics may want to research;
- advertise tools (e.g., PEERING peering.usc.edu, BGPStream
bgpstream.caida.org) to the communities and get people familiar with
  using them, and encourage further use in the future;
- get people working together on interesting/important problems,
  hopefully spurring further collaboration on these problems;
- provide extra incentive for students to attend NANOG.

### FORMAT
Each team of 2-4 people will work on a "challenge".
The organization committee will propose a set of challenges to
bootstrap feedback and refinement based on community input:
participants can propose totally new challenges, modifications to
existing ones, and express their preferences.
The set of potential challenges is described in the event website at
https://github.com/CAIDA/bgp-hackathon/wiki/List-of-Challenges
and will continuously evolve in the days preceding the hackathon.

On Saturday morning, participants will very briefly introduce their
interests and ideas and teams will be officially formed. On Saturday
and Sunday, participants will work together in teams to hack and
develop their ideas, culminating in very short presentations to the
jury on Sunday evening and a party to announce the winning teams and
celebrate everyone's participation.
During the event, domain-experts will provide support to the teams.

Participants are free to work on drafted challenges and on their own
ideas in the days preceding the hackathon. A mailing list and
documentation will provide support on the platforms/tools/data used in
the hackathon. However, for the teams to compete in the hackathon for
prizes, they will have to demonstrate that substantial work was done
during the two-day event.

### PARTICIPATION AND TRAVEL GRANTS
Application to participate in the hackathon is open from December
8, 2016. Application does not guarantee participation. There is no
application fee, and no participation fee. We will accept
applications until one week before the hackathon, or until capacity is
reached. However, the deadline to apply for a travel grant (through
the hackathon application form) is 22 December 2015. Travel grants
reimburse flights and hotel expenses.
Food and drinks will be provided throughout the two-day event.

You are correct, to some extent -- there is a manual processing involved
in the middle ;-)

It's good that you ask for features on the list, where people can
comment on your feature request & add their own use cases (just like
Vaibhav just did); then I collect them, we discuss them internally &
prioritize them, and they end up on the roadmap:

https://atlas.ripe.net/docs/roadmap/

(notice the new URL & new formatting - we are in the process of
migrating the roadmap from the old URL to the new one...)

[Is the maintainer of the probe automatically notified when there is
such an issue?]

There is something similar already on the roadmap:

"Provide additional information to the probe owner about the probe:

After analysis of measurements, results will be added to a comments page
for the specified probe. This helps the hosts to identify issues and fix
them."

I will add your additional request to this one.

Keep them coming :)

Regards,
Vesna

and thanks for tagging it with [Request] -- good practice :)
