Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Adding ReplayGain tags

2022-10-31 Thread w3wilkes

Did the bulk file changer and copied the Modified time stamp to the
Accessed time stamp, ran foobar2000 to do track gain and then album
gain. Looks like I've now got RG for Albums and Tracks with album peaks
and track peaks. Looking at the files I see that foobar2000 preserved
the Modified time stamp so now the Accessed and Modified timestamps are
the same which I don't see as a big deal. Couldn't find any
documentation on foobar2000 leaving the Modified timestamps alone!
Anyone have any info on that?

I know this is an old thread but I thought I'd add this info for anyone
else wanting to do replaygain and preserve the modified timestamp.

Finally getting around to this. I'm on Windows 10 and found that
"accessed time" is apparently enabled by default. Found I could disable
it manually using an elevated command prompt with the following
command;

fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 3

That will make the same album in LMS play at the same volume as its
corresponding CD. However, you should find that some CD's are recorded
louder than others. The intent of the RG tags is to make it so when you
play multiple albums together the relative volume between albums should
be about the same. If you're playing a playlist of multiple songs from
different albums RG should make the songs play at relatively the same
volume.

Using MP3Tag I believe this may be true for FLAC/Vorbis comments, but I
believe for MP3 either delimiter creates just a single tag.

I made a conscious decision that I don't care about the original album
title / track # on that album for my singles in my singles folder. My
tagging of my singles does have the correct dates and genres for each
music file in the singles folder. If I end up acquiring an album that
has a song in my singles folder, the song gets removed from the singles
folder. My "Singles" album only has 48 songs in it. For the most part
I'm an "Album" type person so my singles folder represent less than .2%
of my collection.

My cover art in my whole library is all as stand alone *.jpg files, no
embedded cover art in any of my music media files. I have front cover,
back cover, inside pages .jpg files and any .pdf booklets for an album
in the album folder too so that I can use the "Music and Artist

Seems that the easiest think would be 2 copies. One as individual
albums, the other as a multidisc album. The multidisc would have all
songs in the same folder with a common Album title. File names for the

Disc# in the tags.

I just figured that since the OP has been around these forums since 2006
they are probably aware of FLAC and have chosen WAV for their own
reasons. Because of that I figured I'd just answer the question rather

I've never been able to get files from different directories to join as
a single album with all tags the same. I do not use the comp flag at
all. I do comp albums strictly with "Album Artist", some compilations I
use "Various", some I use "Soundtrack", etc. All "Artist" tags are the
actual performing artist for the track. I would have thought that no
Comp tag would be the same as Comp=0, but I've never tested Comp=0 with
an album spread across multiple directories. I've only tested with no
comp tag at all.

If I understand what the OP wants it's to have the album show in the
left pane of LMS WebGUI with the separate cover.jpg image, but the now
playing image to be the imbedded cover art image. I think the separate
folder thing would just show each track as a separate album in the left
pane with the imbedded cover art image in each track as the album cover.
I've never been able to get same album tracks in separate folders to be
shown as a single album like in a 2 disk set. I ended up having to put
the tracks in the same directory, use the Disc # tag along with the LMS
setting My Music tab -> Group Discs set to "Treat multi-disc sets as a
single album".

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Band tag in dsf files

2018-12-08 Thread w3wilkes

I was not saying that a separate BAND tag had been implemented in the
LMS database, I was saying that you can put multiple items in TPE2 by
separating them with a semi colon ";". You would then see separate
entries for each one in the "Album Artist" view with the LMS setting of
"Treat TPE2 MP3 tag as Album Artist". There is only one TPE2 tag and
depending on your setting in LMS it will either be treated as "Album
Artist" or "Band". I use DBPoweramp with LAME encoder to rip to MP3's. I
believe that DBPoweramp treats TPE2 as "Album Artist".

I think your TPE1 and TPE2 are written by your ripper or tag editor. LMS
doesn't write these. The treat TPE2 as band or album artist only affects
how the LMS database is built. I wonder what would happen if you coded
your 2 things as album artist field separated with a semicolon ";".
There are other tag fields that LMS supports having multiple - separate
values in the same tag, example is you can have multiple genres in the
TCON tag.

Are you saying that you have coded a different year in each of the CD's
and they have identical album titles and you've set Group Discs to
"Treat multi-disc sets as a single album"? If so it seems like you may
want to set each disc album title to be suffixed with like "CD1", "CD2",
etc so that each disk shows as a separate album.

what happens if there's disagreement in tag sources. DBPoweramp implies
you get "PerfectMeta" using their ripper.

Yes, in Windows Media Player options you definitely want to uncheck the
"Retrieve additional information from the internet" check box. If you
rely on your own tagging and album art allowing WMP to retrieve from the
internet will overwrite your hi-res album art and alter tags. This was a
terrible decision on Microsoft's part to have this checked by default.
It's a case of Microsoft deciding that by default they will alter your
data, almost seems criminal to me!

Sounds like you might have the default WMP settings that replaces mp3
tag info and replaces cover art.

In WMP click Organize dropdown -> on Library tab uncheck Retrieve
additional info from the Internet.
The only thing you might want in this group is the Maintain my star
ratings.

If you are using WHS2011 there is another setting you need to shut off
in addition to these WMP settings. From the WHS Dashboard select Server
settings -> select the Media item on the left -> uncheck Retrieve
additional information...

My feeling is that MS is out of line by having the defaults of these set
to modify files that I own set to overlay my cover art and mp3 tag
settings!

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Documentation of tagging

2015-07-07 Thread w3wilkes

The only thing I'm aware of is the LMS code itself.

As an example I have TBPM in all my mp3 files populated using MixMeister
which puts it out to 2 decimal places as text eg; 124.43 beats per
minute. LMS has a field for BPM in the tracks table, however it only
supports integers (whole numbers) so it would ignore the MixMeister
populated tags. The ID3v2.3 spec says this field should be integer but
is a text field so it allows decimal numbers to be stored. This led me
to find an action developed by user moonbase for MP3Tag that rounds
the TBPM field to the nearest integer. I now have BPM stored in the LMS
Database and use Erlands SQL and Dynamic playlists plugins to create and
play playlists with BPM as part of the playlist filter (I have to
manually edit the SQL to add BPM as a filter criteria because Erland
doesn't support BPM in his SQL Playlist plugin used to generate the
SQL).

If you would like to take a look at what all is in the LMS Database you
should grab SQLite Expert Personal 3. This is a great tool to access the
LMS database if you want to know what all is in there... And there is a
whole lot!

It doesn't really surprise me on the inability of phone music apps to

that have well organized music libraries on computers consisting of
hundreds to thousands of albums are an extreme minority of music on our

I think I owe you an apology. I did not mean to give the impression that
my tagging of Album Artist (TPE2) did anything on my phone using Google
Play Music. I was explaining my use in LMS (and prior to LMS software on
my PC). I believe at the end of my first reply I said that if you want
songs to group together on your phone in the Artist view you would have
to have the Artist tag (TPE1) be the same across all songs in the album.
I'm not aware of any Android play music app that pays any attention to
Album Artist (TPE2). I think Google Play Music goes by just Album Title
to group albums in the Album view and possibly having all the songs in
the same folder. Again, sorry for giving the wrong impression.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Android music player that treats compilation albums same as LMS

Wonder what you mean... I have compilation albums that I've built on my
Android phone that work just fine. I use the standard Google Play Music
app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.music
I group all songs together in a single folder and here's how I've got
the songs tagged (ID3v2.3)

Album Title (TALB) is the same across all songs for a compilation album,
like Car Songs
Song Artist (TPE1) is the song performer like The Beatles for the song
Drive My Car (TIT2)
Album Artist (TPE2) is set to Various for all songs in this album

The rest of the tags can be unique to the song like Year, Track #,
Genre, etc.

Using this tagging and grouping method the songs all show as a single
album in the Album view of the Play Music app

In the Artist view the TPE1 tag is used for the songs, so this song
shows under The Beatles, there is nothing for Album Artist (TPE2) of
Various

If you want the songs to group together in the Artist view also you
would have to have Song Artist (TPE1) be the same for all the songs in
the compilation album.

I don't think there's a product out there that has anywhere near the
capabilities of LMS for controlling, grouping and searching for music
within your library. I started building my digital music library years
before I found Squeeze things. With the music library software I had
used before LMS my above tagging method works with pretty much every
music software out there including LMS. Because of the way I've always
done my tagging I've not used the compilation tag for my compilation
albums (I know, some would think this heresy in the Squeeze world). If I
want to look at my compilation albums in LMS they're under V for
Various in the Artist view and under V in the Album view because I've
set the sort method to Artist, Year, Album. For Soundtracks I've
always set the Album Artist to Soundtrack so that Soundracks are under
S in the Artist and Album views. Using this sort method (bottom left
dropdown button in the left pane of the WebUI) and the methods I've
selected in Setting - My Music (List albums by band and Treat TPE2
MP3 tag as Album Artist) I've seen no need for the compilation tag.

2013-04-24 Thread w3wilkes

If it's just a 4 digit year and you want to change it to a different 4
digit year you should be good to use FRHEd to change it, but I'd test a
file first to make sure. That's all I can think of for your immediate
fix. You should report the issue to the MP3Tag person and maybe a fix
will be issued. Other than that, it's all I've got.

I'm guessing that since you're using MP3Tag that you're on Windows. You
could download and install this Hex editor
http://frhed.sourceforge.net/en/
and then load (edit) one of your problem FLAC files into FRHED and look
for your year that you can't get rid of. You should then be able to
determine which tag field the year being displayed in Squeeze land is
coming from.

Did a little more playing with this. Forgot to mention that the tags in

remove the TLEN tag and the file still shows the correct song length.
Does anyone know where in the file the song length is stored?

I do not have foobar2000. In my case the VBR files show the correct
length (duration) in Squeeze server (other programs also show the song
duration correctly). It's the TLEN ID3v2.3 tag that's wrong and showing
a value of 0. This tells me that the TLEN tag is not what programs use
to determine song duration. Does anyone know how Squeeze server
determines the duration of VBR MP3 files?

I can give foobar2000 a shot, but I think it's a EAC problem. This is
based on when I rip a album (CD) it is only the last song on the album
that gets a TLEN of 0, all the rest of the songs (1 through n-1) all get
correct TLEN tag. All songs on the album show the correct duration in
Squeeze, WMP, Windows Explorer, MP3Tag, etc.

I thought I knew it was a tag issue and not a header issue since it's

Isn't the length (duration) displayed in Squeeze, Explorer, WMP, MP3Tag
determined from the header, not TLEN?

One thing I think seems pretty obvious is that if TLEN is showing a

aren't getting the song length (duration) from TLEN.

I am using LAME 3.99.5. This issue with TLEN on the last song of a album
also existed when I was using LAME 3.98.4 which was the version I was
using before 3.99.5. I really believe this is not a LAME problem, but a
EAC problem. I think EAC actually populates the tags because it's a EAC
setting to tell what version ID3 tag to use (I set for ID3v2.3 only and
that's what MP3Tag says I have), not LAME.

[SlimDevices: Ripping] EAC Wierdness

2013-03-21 Thread w3wilkes

I’m using Exact Audio Copy V1.0 beta 3 with the external LAME.exe
encoder VBR –V 0 –v –V 0 –B 320. I’ve noticed this happening with
multiple versions of LAME so I’m asking here if anyone else has seen
this in EAC. I use the provided EAC capability to get song info from
FREEDB.org when I rip a CD. Everything appears to work just fine except
the last song of a album has the TLEN tag set to “0” (a value of zero).
When the song properties are viewed in any software like Windows
Explorer, Squeezebox Server, WMP the song length shows correctly. One
interesting note is that the Length column in MP3Tag shows the correct
song length, but if you display using MP3Tag extended tags the Length
shows as 0.

Where you've set your Compilation things note that there is a fill in
the blank item that says When compilation albums are grouped together,
they appear under Various Artists I have a similar setup to you
only in the tags I have set Album Artist = Artist explicitly and
then when it's a compilation I set Artist = the performer and Album
Artist = Various (not Various Artists).

I think you have 2 choices to get what you want. The long way is to
retag all Various Artists ro just Various or fill in the blank in
the settings for compilations to be something like Various Bands. I
think either way will get you where you want to go.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Is SBS case sensitive where artists are concerned?

2011-07-30 Thread w3wilkes

Just a comment on the tags and their contents as opposed to the data
modeling/data base design. I'll use the wiki on ID3 tags as a example
(I would guess there are similar definitions for APE and Vorbis);

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ID3 (this refers to ID3.org as the owner
of the spec for the contents of the various versions of ID3 tags)

This is where I'd say the definition of tag contents is, not the data
base modeler/designer that is building a base to accommodate the
cataloging of these tags. If the spec for the tags doesn't state that
leading/trailing blanks are not allowed in a given tags content then
I'd say they are allowed. With that spec in mind then I'd think that it
is the job of the data base designer to honor the possibility of having
leading and/or trailing blanks. I believe that what we're seeing in the
data base is a more strict interpretation of the tag specification.
Strictly speaking I'd say that the owner of the file is responsible for
the integrity of the data in the file and that the data base designer
should honor the data as it is in the file as long as it conforms to
the spec of that data type.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Is SBS case sensitive where artists are concerned?

2011-07-29 Thread w3wilkes

I'm with Phil and Philip. I started this music server thing with a
SoundBlaster Wireless Music solution many years ago. The software for
that product along with WMP were very particular on how tags were
handled. I found that out quickly when I started ripping my CD's and
doing the tagging. When I switched to SBS and a Duet a couple of years
ago my tags were a non-issue and the same for the move to 7.6.
Computers have a LONG WAY to go before they get DWIM (Do What I Mean)
capability (A example of DWIM would be the ability to recognize a
proper name like Paul Simon and sort it to S vs Mötley Crue sorted to
M). So until then I will expect things that match EXACTLY to be
considered a matched set, otherwise they are not part of the same set.

On MrC's point about Arc. You should also note that allmusic.com does
not (probably can not) take the latitude with the name Arc that the
album cover designer is afforded. They need the artist Arc to be a
single artist in their data base.

I could go along with stripping trailing blanks. Adding the strip
option is something I'd see as a next release item to do it right and
to avoid feature creep. To accomodate all views expressed in this
thread I would think it'd have to be a 4 way option;

StripBlank=No (This would be the default if not coded)
StripBlank=Both
StripBlank=Leading
StripBlank=Trailing

1981 you should find that it gives you what you are expecting.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Various Artists in Artists

2011-06-01 Thread w3wilkes

As you can tell there are several opinions on how to properly tag your
compilations. The thing about it is that they're all correct as long as
the whole library is tagged consistently.

As a debt to history my compilations in my library are all tagged with
Album Artist = Various. Back when I built my first server in 2003 the
best wireless solution I could find was the SoundBlaster Wireless Music
system. It was much like the Duet in that there was a separate
controller / receiver, however the controller only did text for
browsing the library. It also had server software like SBS that you
could also control the player from. The issue with compilation albums
was the server had ZERO direct support for compilation albums. I found
that I could set Artist to the track performer and Album Artist to
Various and the compilations would sort as they should under the
Various album artist. The Soundblaster server software had no
capability of any kind to play music on the PC so if I wanted to play
my music on the PC rather than the stereo I had to use WMP. This same
tagging methodology worked fine for WMP too so I was set.

A couple of years ago when I upgraded to the Duet I found that my
library fell right into SBS looking (sorting) just like it always had.
With the SBS server set to Group Compilations together, List Albums
by band and Treat TPE2 MP3 tag as Album Artist all my compilations
only show under the artist Various with no Various Artist entry in
the beginning of the browse by artist menu. This is what I was used to
so I'm happy with the way I've got it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Don't throw out your ancient CD-ROM drives!

2011-05-30 Thread w3wilkes

I've had a similar experience with old optical drives. My HP laptop has
a Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S that refuses to rip my Flim and the BB's -
Tricycle CD. I have a old desktop that I've converted to a WHS box with
a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR 106D and a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-352B and both these
drives have no trouble at all with this CD.
