But, you made first step - good for you!

My friend from the station asked me yesterday:
 - So you really learned so much of linux just by playing with
 Rivendell?
 - Well... I was so focused on testing it that I had to!

That's the way it is, so once again congrats ;-)

2012-02-23 Thread Bill Putney

Logan,

If you're a Mac guy, you're 7/8ths of the way there. Mostly, OS X is
plain old Unix with a fancy desktop. Like all the different flavors of
Unix, OS X has some things in different places and but it's enough the
same that you can get around in it without too much trouble. Mac's have
man pages just like other Unix's and you can find out about the
differences pretty easily. The guys I don't get are all the PC people
that put up with Windoz for years. I beat head against that wall from
Windows version one up through XP. When Apple made the switch to the
Mach Unix kernel I was off windows like a shot. Never looked back.

I got to design our station from a clean sheet of paper and except for a
computer that does donor accounting, all the computers in the station
are Unix. There's 4 Mac's, 6 Linux and 1 FreeBSD and they all play
together very happily. The Windos machine is kind of out in the cold but
there ya go. That was Microsoft's intent.

Since we're doing a little history

Got a Novice license, basically for kicks.

Went some months later, and sat for the General, Advanced,
Extra, First Phone, and Second telegraph.
Being the unique applicant, I sat for and passed all of the
written tests, followed by the code test.
Since the Second code qualified for Extra, I only sat through
 the one code test.
As I recall, 25 WPM text, and 20 WPM coded groups.
Missed one question on the telegraph theory.
I don't remember what question it was, but I do remember explaining
to the examiner why my answer on one of the Extra questions was
right, and his answer key was wrong. He conceded the amateur
question, but I *was* wrong on the one telegraph.
Something about electrolyte concentration on an Edison cell,
 and a Tungar bulb.

I'm sure I could not pass today. Much has been forgotten.
Only the commercial phone license ever helped me get a job.
( although I had greater pride in the Extra, and still do. At that
time, it was mostly a vanity license, and that test was a b&^% !
"Calculate the product of the complex impedances A+jB
and X-jY." Not a multiple choice at the time )

I guess I was thinking about the Internet broadcasters who don't have fat
fingers but do have fast mice and good eyesight!

To them it looks a little klunky.

You can do that now; my home version of RDAirplay and RDPanel have custom
"tie-dye" skins.

Check this page for details:

The buttons wont change, but the background image can be whatever JPG or PNG
you want it to be.
