In theory (heh, heh), they should all work exactly the same as far as Rivendell
is concerned. That said, I have seen some apparent oddities with kernel module
compatibility with at least one (RockyLinux). For that reason, as of the latest
beta build (Beta3), I have gone to generating all RPMs and other binaries on
real, honest-to-god RHEL 8, which is also now my primary testing environment
for same.

WRT the “clones”, it’s worth bearing in mind that it’s still pretty early days
for them; I imagine that all of them are still in the process of shaking down
various compatibility issues. Compatibility will presumably improve.

Cheers!

Hey Andy,

I concur! What a monumental, gargantuan task! Not only porting to QT5,
but all the welcome improvements too!

Do we have any consensus yet as to which of the RHEL derivatives is the
best to go for in terms of installing Rivendell 4?  There has been
mention of Rocky Linux, Oracle Linux and AlmaLinux.  Are any of these a
recommended derivative to use or should we just opt for RHEL?

I've been sort-of following the progress of CentOS "replacements" and
from where I sit (and with no vested interest in any of them), it seems
as if AlmaLinux has the best chance for long-term "survival" and active
participation. CloudLinux (the creator of AlmaLinux) recently
established the AlmaLinux Foundation and is in the process of turning
the project over to that foundation. Of course that's no guarantee of a
distro that's free of its founders influence, but to me, it indicates a
gesture of good will and desire to play nice in the community.

In other news, you may have heard that Red Hat, Inc. has increased the
number of gratis instances individuals may run as "developers". Any
single entity can now run up to 16 (at last check) instances of RHEL.
One must establish a Red Hat account, and each RHEL instance must be
registered with that account. This may be an option for some folks...

Caveat: I have not yet installed Rivendell 4 on any of the RHEL
derivatives, so cannot offer any thoughts about the viability of such a
configuration. I intend on attempting installation on AlmaLinux in the
next couple of days...

Hope this helps inspire others to try it!
