MAKE IT FIT

Kunsthochschule Kassel - The New Media class is proud to present new
works at panke.gallery, Berlin. The pieces range from installation,
performance, screen-based and interactive works to video and film. 'Make
it fit' refers to the restrictive cabin baggage rules of budget
airlines, including their painfully meticulous control mechanisms. A
lifestyle-conscious, hyper-mobile generation rattling trolleys along
pavements has become the hallmark of gentrified neighborhoods in
travel-hyped European capitals.

Kassel's New Media students are using the classic travel suitcase as a
constraint and metaphorical context for art production to meet the
challenge of setting up a group show in Berlin in less than one day.
Each work must fit into a suitcase to be transported, and setup time has
to be either instant or not more than two hours. Hyper-mobile art also
facilitates instant pop-up micro shows and performances in trains, in
stations, and in other public spaces.

Curatorial processes often see artists selected on the basis of
friendship networks or name dropping rather than actual works. How far
can an artwork be ‘bent’ to make it fit an art show? An art market open
secret is that paintings and sculpture that are small enough to fit in
an ‘Upper Westside’ elevator have a better chance of being sold. Does it
fit?

*DeadDrops HackDay!!*

June 22, 2014, Sunday, 12:00 pm – 12:00 am (save the date!)
at awesome! c-base, Rungestr. 20, Berlin (map)

We will brainstorm, discuss, hack and hang at Spree riverside with bbq
and drinks! Open to everyone, free entrance, drop by any time!
#webstreaming #IRC #beers #sun

Deaddrops started in 2010. People from all over the world have been
making more than 1300 deadrops untill today! The project inspired many
other DIY offline network projects and since last year after Snowden the
site gained again new momentum. It is interesting how this and similar
projects are perceived in a different light today. We actually need
secure and alternative communication channels since we now know how bad
mass surveillance on the Internet is. You are invited to discuss all
these questions with us at the DeadDrops HackDay.

The platform deaddrops.com, mobile site and apps etc were developed by a
whole bunch of enthusiasts from around the world in the past 4 years.
Thx everyone!! :)) Unfortunately the development of deaddrops.com came
to a halt some time ago but now is the right moment to pick up and take
things to the next level. You are invited to join us on June 22 at
c-base to brainstorm, discuss and hack for deaddrops. I’m very open to
all kind of proposals! It’s not only about USB drives, there is much
more waiting out there… Let’s rock!!

Please register at deaddrops at deaddrops com and let me know your
interest, skills and field of work. This would help a lot. In the
evening there will be slots to present your spinoff, project and ideas.
More info and details coming soon!

Gallery [DAM]Berlin presents Berlin based artist Aram Bartholl (*1972,
Bremen) in his first solo exhibition, whose works create a dynamic
tension between online- and real-life. In 2011 Bartholl was partaking in
exhibitions by MoMA, Pace Gallery New York and [DAM]Cologne.

His pieces are cutting-edge – not just product of observation, but
formed by thought-provoking impulses that Aram gives and by the
subsequent independent existence of the artworks created by the user.
His interventions in public space, his readymade-like installations and
sculptures are based on a do-it-yourself-culture with regard to personal
creation and responsibility as well as the Internet's popular icons with
whom Bartholl confronts us in reality. But Aram Bartholl's artworks are
not to be seen as entirely digital: they deal too much with space, are
too haptic in their approach, and the awareness of potential political
influence is too intense – his pieces push out of gallery and museum
surroundings into the city space, into society.

Things, that seem to be trivial parts of the internet, irritate the
viewer as soon as they confront him in the physical world: In Are you
human? a CAPTCHA-code, used by web services to differentiate between
human request and automated scripts, is applied in aluminium form onto
murals and gallery walls. A screen with illuminating pixels turns out to
be a hand crafted object operated by a candle. In a subtle but accurate
way Bartholl reveals discourses concerning the power of a digitally
affected world, e.g. in his successful, often quoted project Dead Drops,
consisting of USB-sticks, mured into city walls, that refuse data
exchange via the internet structures established by big global companies.

'Everything develops extremely fast on the net. I have the urge to
create something that deals with the topic, but that endures anyway,'
says Aram Bartholl about this de-digitalisation of the digital. Where
media art, urban intervention and interactive performance meet he asks
basic sociocritical questions, thinks about our cultural memory. The
rapid development of the digital age is slowed down in his artworks, it
is liberated of its technological appeal and exposed for intentional
examination. For example his new project Dust: Bartholl wants to convey
the worlds most played computer game landscape from Counter Strike – a
virtual space, a place seen by millions of people that is fixed in their
visual memory even though they were never able to really 'enter' it –
into an accessible 1:1 model made of concrete.

With the performance and installation shown at the exhibition for the
first time, Bartholl, who is active in net political circles like the
Chaos Computer Club, turns towards the symptom of an already existing
frontier crossing of digital and analogue world: The Anonymous-movement
and its characteristic comic-inspired Guy-Fawkes-masks, that are its
distinctive mark and protection of identity. They have gained huge media
presence thanks to the civil movement Occupy Wallstreet as well. The
Anonymous-movement pushes forward the idea of a free, net-based
information- and creativity-collective – a kind of global brain, that
develops political capacity to act without hierarchic organisation and
without determined identity.

The exhibition 'Aram Bartholl. Reply All' is part of the associate
programme of Transmediale 2012.

*Open Internet*

2010 showed the beauty of open Internet culture at full scale.
Governments and powerful industry interest groups are trying more than
ever to establish new regulations and tools to control the net. The
Internet must stay open and neutral! Make sure your (online-) life or
business is not dependant on a single large company or cut down by
governments. It is important to keep rethinking net structures and to
escape the mainstream social vortex which is incapable to reflecting on
itself. Internet art and net subcultures play a very important role in
questioning and deconstructing the day to day web defaultism and global,
digital industries.

We are very pleased to present an exquisite selection of
internationally-known artists at SPEED SHOW vol.5 ‘Open Internet’ –
Paris. A wide range of brand new art works created especially for ‘Open
Internet’ discuss the current impact of Internet pop culture, open
source, and minimal amateur and radical options of the Open Internet. A
combination of excellent Paris-based, internationally-know artists and
restless Open Internet advocates form the perfect base for a promising
opening night at the awesome Welat cyber cafe Paris.

Has (inter)net.art left its niche? Or is it clustered into zillions of
tiny net niches splintered into numerous subtopics? The Super Niche
could be a very big niche, a surf-club which is almost mainstream (?) or
a sub cell of a extreme small niche of a 1-visitor ever page in
deprecated HTML oblivion. Learning from evolution the beauty lies in the
absurdity of super niches solutions, of visual workarounds in every day
life net culture. It's time to create more niches! It's time to superfy!

Curatorial Statement
TELE-INTERNET

The Digital Communities category that debuted in 2006 is being
showcased on a larger scale this year. But just how does one go about
exhibiting a digital community, a network of chaotic internet experts
or a spontaneous Facebook group? Where and who are all these people?
What does this internet look like and where can I find it?

Your typical local internet shop represents the internet in a very
basic, simple form. In what might be termed a semi-public space packed
full of computers set up in little cubbyholes, anyone can get temporary
internet access at a very reasonable price. In contrast to the wireless
internet of mobile telephony/3G and WLAN that’s omnipresent and
surrounds us like the air we breathe, here the internet is confined to
a particular space. Several people gather at a semi-public place to
simultaneously use the internet individually. This type of internet
café symbolizes the prejudices held by a certain segment of Western
society towards the internet. For many, the internet is uncontrollable,
deceitful, emblematic of the decline of our culture. But in most parts
of the world, the internet café is the only place where people can get
online. It’s the only possibility to hook up to the big data stream and
take part in the (hopefully) free exchange of information with all its
attendant advantages. The internet is here!

A genuine original Linz internet shop set up in the Tabakfabrik
constitutes Digital Communities’ core. It features a fully functional
kiosk purveying a nice selection of merchandise, Turkish pop music, and
12 internet-capable computers arrayed on quintessential internet café
furniture. But that’s not all: *TELE-INTERNET* is also a meeting place,
project space, workshop area, ch

Curatorial Statement:
SPEED SHOW vol.2: who the fuck do you think you are talking to?

The 2nd edition of the SPEED SHOW presents again a wide selection of
pop.net.art pieces and addresses various developments of performance
related but still screen based art works. Most interaction and
communication on the web bears it's very own performance character. One
could say Facebook is a huge mass performance piece. net.art in it's
classic form could be considered a performance by interactivity as well.
In recent years artists from different fields work increasingly in a mix
of performances and digital interventions. In some cases the screen
itself, the beholder of the pixel is subject to fluctuations. In other
works the performance is acted out by a hysterical mass or just by the code.

Austrian art especially from the 60/70ies is very well known for their
provocative performances and inexorable public interventions. With a
regional focus on Vienna based artists mixed with international coders
and net renegades the SPEED SHOW vol.2:who the fuck do you think you are
talking to? presents a wide range of works from political activist, body
interaction and net-performance related art.

'Show Me What You Got!'

The SPEED SHOW exhibition format:

Hit an Internet-cafe, rent all computers they have and run a show on
them for one night. All art works of the participating artists need to
be on-line (not necessarily public) and are shown in a typical browser
with standard plug-ins. Performance and life pieces may also use
pre-installed communication programs (instant messaging, VOIP, video
chat etc). Custom software (except browser add-ons) or off-line files
are not permitted. Any creative physical modification to Internet cafe
itself is not allowed. The show is public and takes place during normal
opening hours of the Internet cafe/shop. All visitors are welcome to
join the opening, enjoy the art (and to check their email.)

Curatorial Statement:
net.art is dead! Long live pop.net.art!

The Internet browser a key element to the success of the web in the
beginning of the 90's has grown mature in the last two decades.
Technical development, open standards and open software made the browser
a very powerful tool. It seems soon it will take over the operating
system and there will be nothing left than apps in the cloud.

It's about time to revisit net.art in an era of 500 million Facebook
user. net.art never really found it's way out of the media art bubble.
The browser was the promising canvas in the early '90s and is today more
then ever capable to do what ever you like. Within the last let's say 5
years the Internet arrived and became totally mainstream. The social web
unfolded it's power and became part of everyday life of hundreds of
millions users. Their massive real time information flow began to have a
huge impact on mainstream media and political structures.

The potential size of an audience for on-line art work has grown
infinitely large. Technical barriers, limited access, little bandwith or
lack of skills are not an issue any more. In an era of Internet memes
and 20+ million Youtube views on one video in a day artists need to
reconsider the web from a different perspective. A new generation of
creative minds picked up the field of net.art and expanded it to the
next stage: pop.net.art (coined by Aram Bartholl 2010) emerged under the
influence of social web monopolies, highly flexible open software,
amateur meme cult and pop culture. A wide range of coders, designers and
artists including the pop.net.art experts from F.A.T. Lab experiment in
this genre with great success. 'Classic' net.art is appropriated and
gets remixed with web activism, DIY philosyphy, sharing culture, easy to
use browser ad-dons and open source beliebers on a state of the art
technical level.

The first SPEED-SHOW vol.1 represents a wide selection from well known
net.artists to a young generation of web savy coders and Internet
renegades. From youtube interventions and social web critique to pixel
celebration and gif.pop 12 artists (or artist groups) will show recent
and new works.

net.art never died! It just moved to your local Internet-shop! Come and
join the party!

provoziert. Die Ausstellung „Locate Me“ untersucht die Auswirkung neuer
Kommunikationstechnologien auf tradierte Raumkonzepte. Sie ist ein
Erfahrungsbericht junger zeitgenössischer KünstlerInnen über die
digitale Stadt.
