Killing characters off worked for Shakespeare.

Bummer. Yours has lived a long time. Every rose we've tried here as died
in a year or less.

I have pictures of roses, but none with a locomotive.

I have a list of Harry Potter movies that I don't expect Ms Dowling will
EVER allow anyone to make. A number of them involve well-known Potter
characters engaged in such activities. Just think of the possibilities
of BSDM-related magic! Heh heh heh! ;)

So break it down into chapters and write each one as a story.

> Writing is harder than it looks, and it eats vast amounts of time.

Sure does. Have two college degrees in it and been doing it since 1969.
But it produces something of lasting value. (Unless you write user
manuals. Those have an inherent lifespan, during which they frequently
need 2nd, 3rd, etc editions done.)

So do a 2nd, updated edition of your Rosegarden book as an ebook!

I wasn't going to go there, but yeah, if I could somehow combine Harry
Potter with 50 Shades of Grey and then have everybody get killed off
every few chapters (combine with Marquis de Sade?) I could sell eleventy
billion copies for sure.

In reality, I'm never going to write a novel, because I can't turn out a
story that goes for more than about 15 pages. Writing is harder than it
looks, and it eats vast amounts of time.

It's a combination of surrounding growth and two extremely brutal
winters in a row. Back when I planned all this, it was safe to bet on
the high side of average winter temperatures, and that row of shrubs
providing my privacy was only about 5' tall. Now the shrubs are 10'
tall, and it's hard to maintain a balance between privacy and light
penetration. The rose barely gets enough light, and when the brutal low
temperatures hit, it didn't fare well.

Your book sounds ideal for today's self-publishing and print-on-demand
platforms.

Add some pron AKA "erotica" and it would be a massive bestseller. Then you
could devote your time to music and Rosegarden.

Why is it ailing? Roses are normally pretty tough. Do you know any horticulture
bods that might have a look at it? It would be a great shame to lose it.

I should go write a novel where I develop characters for 1500 pages
before killing them in a most brutal and shocking fashion.

Incidentally, I'm planning to release 15.07 in July. It has been a long
time since the last release, and it's also the 10th anniversary of the
"total financial failure" that was my ill-fated book. It's also when I
finally get to take a train ride, pulled behind a freshly restored steam
locomotive.

I wouldn't put it past me to figure out a way to get a rose into the
same photo as the locomotive, and use that for the new splash screen.
Sadly, the iconic Rosegarden rose is nearly dead, so I doubt I will be
lucky enough to get another good photo of that one.

Close synaptic. From a terminal, do this:

sudo apt-get install libsm-dev

...and post the output. There might be clues there.

[Rosegarden-user] RG 14.12

2015-06-17 Thread Henry W. Peters
Hi,

Trying to compile RG 14.12 (it's not in the repository, I currently have
RG 13.06) on my Ubuntu Studio 14.10.

I checked & installed all the dependencies (except one, as stated below)
from http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/wiki/dev:contributing

I get an error message upon ./configure...

> checking for dssi.h... yes
> checking X11/SM/SMlib.h usability... no
> checking X11/SM/SMlib.h presence... no
> checking for X11/SM/SMlib.h... no
> configure: error: Failed to find required X11 header X11/SM/SMlib.h

I try installing libsm-dev from Synaptic & get a warning message to the
effect that the package is broken...

Question: what to do?

Thanks.

Henry
