I've had that problem in the past with version 14.02 (from the kxstudio
repos) on my debian amd64 box.

The situation is exactly the same, suddenly only the selected track
plays. I remember it used to happend when I fiddled with a track's
channel number.

I've since upgraded to the develpment version and haven't seen the
problem again.

If you have already put some work on your piece but you can't recover
it, the only way I found to dodge this is to export to MIDI and then
import in a new session.

Yes, that was it. Vaguely remembered something like that but couldn't find the 
button, never having used it in all my years with RG. 

The troublesome stylized S appears in the track window but not in the main one 
so I was just looking in the wrong place.

 Sounds like you're in solo mode.  It's the [s] button, found in a few 
 different places.  Synchronization between the assorted different places 
 has been a chronic, complex problem, and it's entirely possible you're 
 showing solo mode here but not there, or you're in solo mode even though 
 the display indicates otherwise.
