Reverse the top 3 I'm with the rest. BAMA is going to be much better this

prove this year we will prove it. We ARE the best in the West.

My guess; the Bengal Tiggers, they're loaded with talent, probably have
the best coaching staff of anyone in the west, they have a favorable
home schedule (toughest away games are South Carolina and Alabama). I
look for the Tiggers to probably win the SEC and land in a BCS game.
Here's the way Ricky Mac sees the West shake down

 1) LSU
 2) Aub
 3) Bama
 4) Ole Miss
 5) Arkansas
 6) MSU

Price believes SI only got his 'name right'
ESPN.com

Mike Price is still not sure why he was fired at the University of Alabama.

Price, who left Washington State after last season to coach the Crimson Tide, was
fired May 3 by Alabama president Robert Witt after allegations arose about his conduct
at a golf outing in Florida.

He had a seven-year, $10 million contract on the table but didn't sign it before his
termination.

Price has sued Alabama for $20 million, claiming due process was denied, his civil
rights were violated, breach of contract, wrongful termination and fraud.

He has also sued Time Inc. for $20 million, stating he was defamed by a Sports
Illustrated article about the strip club visit that led to his ouster.

Price addressed his firing and what happened at the golf outing in this week's Sunday
Conversation. Below is the transcript:

Q: So what happened -- how did we get to this place?
A: Well, you know, I had too much to drink one night and ended up at a topless bar and
made a serious mistake and admitted my mistake.

Q: Is that a problem for you? Is alcohol a problem for you?
A: No, it's created a problem for me. I don't drink during the season at all. Haven't
drank during the season for 20 years. It's just something I wouldn't do. But the
drinking that night caused a problem for me there's no question about that.

Q: There's certainly nothing illegal about topless ...
A: There's nothing, I did nothing illegal or illicit the whole night. Again, I'd had
too many drinks and made a mistake by going there, no question about that.

Q: Were you surprised that people recognized you?
A: As evening went on there weren't many people that recognized me there. I was very
quiet and sat at the end of the bar. With a friend and that was that.

Q: So there was none of this -- no lap dances?
A: No. I wasn't. I know exactly how much money I spent at that bar and it was nowhere
close to what was reported at SI and all those reports -- were supposedly all those
things happened during the day and I came back at night, well, I was at Alabama until
-- my plane didn't get to Florida until 5 p.m. and then went right to the dinner.

Q: A lot of stories have been out there -- Sports Illustrated -- how much of what they
reported was wrong and?
A: Well they got my name right. That's about the only thing they got right in that
story. And it was, I told the author, the writer of the story on the phone where he
was completely off-base. I wasn't even in the state of Florida when he was making,
when some of the girls were making accusations that they were making. I told him you
know he was way off base with this story but he printed it anyway even though he had
facts, other facts, he printed it. It was just ridiculous what was printed. There was
no two, three women in my room. That didn't happen.

Q: Was there a woman?
A: Yes, there was a woman that came with me, followed me from the last place that we
were at and came into my room. I fell asleep. I woke up the next day in my clothes
with my glasses on and was surprised to see her still in my room. So I just, it was
early, I had a golf tournament. It was early in the morning. I was embarrassed, got
out of there, got dressed and left.

Q: And you had to be really afraid at that time or were you?
A: Yeah, oh yeah I was. It was, I hadn't done anything like that before and I didn't
know where to go or where to turn to and um, but um, my wife and family have been
great. And I did, at that time then, a few days later, did talk with Mal Moore, AD at
Alabama and we went in -- and that's about the first conversation I've had with the
president. When we talked about the situation and he said you're a good man you're
caught in a bad situation, we'll help you through this. And at previous conversations
through the week, he even said I've talked with your former bosses at WSU and they
can't say enough good things about you so we're going to help you through this.

Q: And then their answer was ...
A: Was termination. They said let's wait for a week and I wasn't allowed to say
anything to press or say my side of story and I was just waiting for the Board of
Trustees meeting and that became a media circus. My wife was asked to come, and my
boys they got up and spoke and some players on team got up and spoke on my behalf and
then my wife and I waited for three hours for Board of Trustees outside in hallway.
And then when they adjourned, I didn't even realize they'd adjourned, they just said
it was a potty break, no decisions have been made yet. And President Witt went to the
microphone and said I was terminated. I never actually -- you know he never -- said
the words to me and I never had an opportunity to ask why. I still don't know what the
reasons were for termination.

Q: Which is part of the lawsuit?
A: Which is part

Story:
Music Industry Wins 871 Subpoenas Against Internet Users
Saturday, July 19, 2003
WASHINGTON - The music industry has won at least 871 federal subpoenas
against computer users suspected of illegally sharing music files (search)
on the Internet, with roughly 75 new subpoenas being approved each day, U.S.
court officials said Friday.
The effort represents early steps in the music industry's contentious plan
to file civil lawsuits aimed at crippling online piracy.
Subpoenas reviewed by The Associated Press show the industry compelling some
of the largest Internet providers, such as Verizon Communications Inc. and
Comcast Cable Communications Inc., and some universities to identify names
and mailing addresses for users on their networks known online by nicknames
such as fox3j, soccerdog33, clover77 or indepunk74.
The Recording Industry Association of America (search) has said it expects
to file at least several hundred lawsuits seeking financial damages within
the next eight weeks. U.S. copyright laws (search) allow for damages of $750
to $150,000 for each song offered illegally on a person's computer, but the
RIAA has said it would be open to settlement proposals from defendants.
The campaign comes just weeks after U.S. appeals court rulings requiring
Internet providers to readily identify subscribers suspected of illegally
sharing music and movie files. The 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act
permits music companies to force Internet providers to turn over the names
of suspected music pirates upon subpoena from any U.S. District Court
clerk's office, without a judge's signature required.
In some cases, subpoenas cite as few as five songs as representative
recordings of music files available for downloading from these users. The
trade group for the largest music labels, the Washington-based RIAA,
previously indicated its lawyers would target Internet users who offer
substantial collections of MP3 song files but declined to say how many songs
might qualify for a lawsuit.
We would have to look at historic trends, but that is a very high number,
said Alan Davidson of the Center for Democracy and Technology, a civil
liberties group that has argued against the subpoenas. It doesn't sound
like they're just going after a few big fish.
Music fans are fighting back with technology, using new software designed
specifically to stymie monitoring of their online activities by the major
record labels.
A new version of Kazaa Lite, free software that provides access to the
service operated by Sharman Networks Ltd., can prevent anyone from listing
all music files on an individual's machine and purports to block scans from
Internet addresses believed to be associated with the RIAA.
Many of the subpoenas reviewed by the AP identified songs from the same few
artists, including Avril Lavigne, Snoop Dogg and Michael Jackson. It was
impossible to determine whether industry lawyers were searching the Internet
specifically for songs by these artists or whether they were commonly
popular among the roughly 60 million users of file-sharing services.
The RIAA's subpoenas are so prolific that the U.S. District Court in
Washington, already suffering staff shortages, has been forced to reassign
employees from elsewhere in the clerk's office to help process paperwork,
said Angela Caesar-Mobley, the clerk's operations manager.
The RIAA declined to comment on the numbers of subpoenas it issued.
We are identifying substantial infringers and we're going to whatever
entity is providing (Internet) service for that potential infringer, said
Matt Oppenheim, the group's senior vice president of business and legal
affairs. From there we'll be in a position to begin bringing lawsuits.
A spokeswoman for the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts said the
clerk's office here was functioning more like a clearing house, issuing
subpoenas for all over the country. Any civil lawsuits would likely be
transferred to a different jurisdiction, spokeswoman Karen Redmond said.
Verizon, which has fought the RIAA over the subpoenas with continued legal
appeals, said it received at least 150 subpoenas during the last two weeks.
There were no subpoenas on file sent to AOL Time Warner Inc., the nation's
largest Internet provider and also parent company of Warner Music Group.
Earthlink Inc., another of the largest Internet providers, said it has
received only three new subpoenas.
Depaul University in Chicago was among the few colleges that received such

Shula eager to get players on field

By Tim Gayle
Montgomery Advertiser
After racing through June and July at a maddening pace, Alabama coach
Mike Shula figures his first steps on Thomas-Drew Field for the Crimson
Tide's first practice on Aug. 5 will be a return to normalcy.

Our summer has been a unique summer, said Shula, who was hired as
Alabama's head coach on May 8 in the wake of former coach Mike Price's
firing. I think things will calm down for us once practice starts.

In his first appearance in front of a large gathering since being
formally introduced as Alabama's head coach on May 9, Shula spoke to
more than 300 coaches gathered for the seventh annual Alabama All-Stars
Sports Week coaches' convention at the Montgomery Civic Center on
Saturday morning.

Unlike his May 9 introduction, when the new coach got off to a rocky
start in the opening moments of his speech to a packed room and a
statewide television audience, Shula appeared comfortable and at ease
with the state's high school coaches. He spoke on developing
quarterbacks -- something he saw first-hand by watching his father, Don,
lead the Miami Dolphins when he was a youngster. He was quarterbacks
coach of the Dolphins before he took the Alabama job.

Many of his demonstrations were computer generated, although he included
a few clips of Dolphins' games and a couple from the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers, where he got his first coaching job in 1988 and returned as
an offensive coordinator in the late 1990s.

One of his topics, Gaining an Edge on Your Opponents, will certainly
be of interest to Alabama players and fans this fall. Shula will attempt
to improve on last year's 10-3 season without benefit of a spring
practice. Three tips to accomplish that edge included watching film,
practicing on your own and working on your weaknesses.

Shula brought his offensive assistants to the meeting and introduced
offensive line coach Bob Connelly, receivers coach Charlie Harbison,
offensive coordinator Dave Rader, running backs coach Sparky Woods and
tight ends coach Dave Ungerer, who also handles the special teams.

The defensive staff, Shula said, visited with the coaches earlier this week.

He opened his speech by talking briefly about the South's 17-10 win over
the North from Friday night's all-star game, showing a little knowledge
and appreciation for the work accomplished by the state's high school
coaches.

You hear so much about the programs around here, he said after his
presentation. They do such a good job, which is evident by the kids
they send us. You want to see the guys that are responsible for doing that.

While many college coaches have not always embraced the high school
coaches convention -- Price, in fact, turned down an opportunity to
speak to the group -- Shula seemed to enjoy talking to the coaches
individually. Many of them included former Alabama players turned head
coaches such as Stanhope Elmore's Jeff Foshee, Aliceville's Maurice
Belser and Oneonta's Josh Niblett.

The more guys that are involved in coaching football can get together,
the more it's going to help football in general in this state, Shula
said. We all want to be as good as we can be. We've got a chance to
meet with coaches and exchange ideas. That's going to make us all better.

Several members of Shula's coaching staff were on vacation last week and
the new coach spent this week going over some final summer plans for the
upcoming season.

We finalized our training camp schedule, Shula said. I think from
about Wednesday on, everything will kind of get back to normal.

Of course, there's nothing normal about August practice, especially for
a coach who didn't get the opportunity to spend the spring with his
team. One thing that will be normal for Shula, however, will be the
opportunity to interact with his players, something NCAA guidelines
prohibit during the summer.

We're all looking forward to getting our first chance out there with
the players, he said. We've got to find out in a hurry who we want to
get the ball to offensively. And defensively, who are going to be the
guys who are going to make the big plays? Who is going to be
accountable? That goes for special teams, also. In all of those areas,
we have to make quick decisions without (the benefit of) a spring practice.

Gee-Zuss!

WTF is up with that!!??? Seems to me that Kazza and the other download sites
would be required to notify their members BEFORE any fines were given and
allow folks to quit sharing before it became illegal. Seems they made a law
and then made it retro-active.

C'mon you lawyer people, chime in and give us your outlook.

2003-07-21 Thread kr10

When I had Kaaza on my machine I had it set not to share any files. I only used it to
download. Not share. The article you quoted sounded like they are going after the
folks who share the songs.

If I were your friend, I would save my mp3 files to a new folder and uninstall/delete
the program until all this blows over.

Price believes SI only got his 'name right'
ESPN.com

Mike Price is still not sure why he was fired at the University of Alabama.

Price, who left Washington State after last season to coach the Crimson
Tide, was fired May 3 by Alabama president Robert Witt after allegations
arose about his conduct at a golf outing in Florida.

He had a seven-year, $10 million contract on the table but didn't sign it
before his termination.

Price has sued Alabama for $20 million, claiming due process was denied, his
civil rights were violated, breach of contract, wrongful termination and
fraud.

He has also sued Time Inc. for $20 million, stating he was defamed by a
Sports Illustrated article about the strip club visit that led to his
ouster.

Price addressed his firing and what happened at the golf outing in this
week's Sunday Conversation. Below is the transcript:

Q: So what happened -- how did we get to this place?
A: Well, you know, I had too much to drink one night and ended up at a
topless bar and made a serious mistake and admitted my mistake.

Q: Is that a problem for you? Is alcohol a problem for you?
A: No, it's created a problem for me. I don't drink during the season at
all. Haven't drank during the season for 20 years. It's just something I
wouldn't do. But the drinking that night caused a problem for me there's no
question about that.

Q: There's certainly nothing illegal about topless ...
A: There's nothing, I did nothing illegal or illicit the whole night. Again,
I'd had too many drinks and made a mistake by going there, no question about
that.

Q: Were you surprised that people recognized you?
A: As evening went on there weren't many people that recognized me there. I
was very quiet and sat at the end of the bar. With a friend and that was
that.

Q: So there was none of this -- no lap dances?
A: No. I wasn't. I know exactly how much money I spent at that bar and it
was nowhere close to what was reported at SI and all those reports -- were
supposedly all those things happened during the day and I came back at
night, well, I was at Alabama until -- my plane didn't get to Florida until
5 p.m. and then went right to the dinner.

Q: A lot of stories have been out there -- Sports Illustrated -- how much of
what they reported was wrong and?
A: Well they got my name right. That's about the only thing they got right
in that story. And it was, I told the author, the writer of the story on the
phone where he was completely off-base. I wasn't even in the state of
Florida when he was making, when some of the girls were making accusations
that they were making. I told him you know he was way off base with this
story but he printed it anyway even though he had facts, other facts, he
printed it. It was just ridiculous what was printed. There was no two, three
women in my room. That didn't happen.

Q: Was there a woman?
A: Yes, there was a woman that came with me, followed me from the last place
that we were at and came into my room. I fell asleep. I woke up the next day
in my clothes with my glasses on and was surprised to see her still in my
room. So I just, it was early, I had a golf tournament. It was early in the
morning. I was embarrassed, got out of there, got dressed and left.

Q: And you had to be really afraid at that time or were you?
A: Yeah, oh yeah I was. It was, I hadn't done anything like that before and
I didn't know where to go or where to turn to and um, but um, my wife and
family have been great. And I did, at that time then, a few days later, did
talk with Mal Moore, AD at Alabama and we went in -- and that's about the
first conversation I've had with the president. When we talked about the
situation and he said you're a good man you're caught in a bad situation,
we'll help you through this. And at previous conversations through the week,
he even said I've talked with your former bosses at WSU and they can't say
enough good things about you so we're going to help you through this.

Q: And then their answer was ...
A: Was termination. They said let's wait for a week and I wasn't allowed to
say anything to press or say my side of story and I was just waiting for the
Board of Trustees meeting and that became a media circus. My wife was asked
to come, and my boys they got up and spoke and some players on team got up
and spoke on my behalf and then my wife and I waited for three hours for
Board of Trustees outside in hallway. And then when they adjourned, I didn't
even realize they'd adjourned, they just said it was a potty break, no
decisions have been made yet. And President Witt went to the

I agree Rick, UPig returns more starters than Allbarn,
Nutt owns Wingnutt and they play at Fayetteville, yet
the Barn is a big favorite. Here's what I think.

1. Upig- with another UGA loss in Atlanta
2. Allbarn- Wingnut blows one or two as usual
3. Bama- Could be higher with fast start
4. LSwho- Always overrated, not sold on Mauck
5. Old Myth- Eli could make them higher with decent D.

  Story:
Music Industry Wins 871 Subpoenas Against Internet
 Users
  Saturday, July 19, 2003
WASHINGTON - The music industry has won at least
 871 federal subpoenas
against computer users suspected of illegally
 sharing music files (search)
on the Internet, with roughly 75 new subpoenas
 being approved each day,
 U.S.
  court officials said Friday.
The effort represents early steps in the music
 industry's contentious plan
to file civil lawsuits aimed at crippling online
 piracy.
Subpoenas reviewed by The Associated Press show
 the industry compelling
 some
of the largest Internet providers, such as Verizon
 Communications Inc. and
Comcast Cable Communications Inc., and some
 universities to identify names
and mailing addresses for users on their networks
 known online by
 nicknames
  such as fox3j, soccerdog33, clover77 or
 indepunk74.
The Recording Industry Association of America
 (search) has said it expects
to file at least several hundred lawsuits seeking
 financial damages within
the next eight weeks. U.S. copyright laws (search)
 allow for damages of
 $750
to $150,000 for each song offered illegally on a
 person's computer, but
 the
RIAA has said it would be open to settlement
 proposals from defendants.
The campaign comes just weeks after U.S. appeals
 court rulings requiring
Internet providers to readily identify subscribers
 suspected of illegally
sharing music and movie files. The 1998 Digital
 Millennium Copyright Act
permits music companies to force Internet
providers to turn over the names
of suspected music pirates upon subpoena from any
 U.S. District Court
  clerk's office, without a judge's signature
 required.
In some cases, subpoenas cite as few as five songs
 as representative
recordings of music files available for
 downloading from these users. The
trade group for the largest music labels, the
 Washington-based RIAA,
previously indicated its lawyers would target
 Internet users who offer
substantial collections of MP3 song files but
 declined to say how many
 songs
  might qualify for a lawsuit.
We would have to look at historic trends, but
 that is a very high
 number,
said Alan Davidson of the Center for Democracy and
 Technology, a civil
liberties group that has argued against the
 subpoenas. It doesn't sound
like they're just going after a few big fish.
Music fans are fighting back with technology,
 using new software designed
specifically to stymie monitoring of their online
 activities by the major
  record labels.
A new version of Kazaa Lite, free software that
 provides access to the
service operated by Sharman Networks Ltd., can
 prevent anyone from listing
all music files on an individual's machine and
 purports to block scans
 from
Internet addresses believed to be associated with
 the RIAA.
Many of the subpoenas reviewed by the AP
 identified songs from the same
 few
artists, including Avril Lavigne, Snoop Dogg and
 Michael Jackson. It was
impossible to determine whether industry lawyers
 were searching the
 Internet
specifically for songs by these artists or whether
 they were commonly
popular among the roughly 60 million users of
 file-sharing services.
The RIAA's subpoenas are so prolific that the U.S.
 District Court in
Washington, already suffering staff shortages, has
 been forced to reassign
employees from elsewhere in the clerk's office to
 help process paperwork,
said Angela Caesar-Mobley, the clerk's operations
 manager.
The RIAA declined to comment on the numbers of
 subpoenas it issued.
We are identifying substantial infringers and
 we're going to whatever
entity is providing (Internet) service for that
 potential infringer, said
Matt Oppenheim, the group's senior vice president
 of business and legal
affairs. From there we'll be in a position to
 begin bringing lawsuits.
A spokeswoman for the Administrative Office of the
 U.S. Courts said the
clerk's office here was functioning more like a
 clearing house, issuing
subpoenas for all over the country. Any civil

Free or not, seems to me there should be a period where the owners of the
sites (Kazza and Winmx and others) would have to notify the users that
sharing is illegal. Not just make up a law and then arrest the masses.

BTW , I don't feel that paying for the opportunity to download music makes
it any more legal than a free site. The money collected doesn't go to the
artists. It goes to the owners of the site.

Why not just take the sites off the Net if it is illegal and don't mess with
the users. No site = no users.

Mike Price is still not sure why he was fired at the University of
Alabama.

Price, who left Washington State after last season to coach the Crimson

arose about his conduct at a golf outing in Florida.

He had a seven-year, $10 million contract on the table but didn't sign

Free or not, seems to me there should be a period where the owners of the
sites (Kazza and Winmx and others) would have to notify the users that
sharing is illegal. Not just make up a law and then arrest the masses.

BTW , I don't feel that paying for the opportunity to download music makes
it any more legal than a free site. The money collected doesn't go to the
artists. It goes to the owners of the site.

Why not just take the sites off the Net if it is illegal and don't mess

[RollTideFan] New Assistant Soccer Coach

2003-07-21 Thread Ricky McMahan
Crimson Tide hires assistant soccer coach
July 21, 2003
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20030721/NEWS/307210342/1011

TUSCALOOSA | Teresa Patterson has been hired as an assistant soccer
coach at the University of Alabama.

Patterson spent the past five seasons as the head coach at Marshall
University, where she began the soccer program in 1997.

Were very excited and fortunate to have the opportunity to add Teresa
to our staff, coach Don Staley said. Any time you have the chance to
hire somebody with head coaching experience, you have to jump at it.

Prior to the 1999 season, Patterson was selected to coach the South
Select Team at the United States Amateur Soccer Association in Portland,
Ore., where she led the South team to the gold medal.

Im very excited to join Coach Staley and his staff and to get the
opportunity to work in the SEC, one of the elite conferences in the
country, Patterson said.

Patterson spent two years as an assistant coach at UAB and one year as
head coach at Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. She was an All-Trans
American Conference goalkeeper at Mercer College.

[RollTideFan] Evander Holyfield Jr. An Aub?

2003-07-21 Thread Ricky McMahan
Did you guys see this from last week? Maybe I just slept through it...

Holyfield's Son to Walk On at Auburn as WR
07/16/2003
http://www.secsports.com/index.php?url_channel_id=2url_subchannel_id=url_publish_channel_id=1854well_id=2

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Evander Holyfield Jr. doesn't bring a lot of
experience to the Auburn football team -- he played just six games of
football in his high school career -- but one thing he does have is a
good athletic pedigree.

The 6-foot-3, 160-pound son of boxing great Evander Holyfield plans to
walk on to the Tigers squad this fall, in hopes of one day developing
into a star receiver.

I have a talent for football, Holyfield Jr. told The Mobile Register
for a Wednesday story. I feel that once I learn more about the sport
and get somewhere with someone who teaches me, I can be somebody really
good.

Holyfield Jr.'s senior season at Landmark Christian High School in
Atlanta in 2002 is his only prep varsity experience. Playing in just six
games, he caught three touchdown passes from highly touted junior
quarterback Alex Mortensen, son of ESPN reporter Chris Mortensen.

Evander's problem is he didn't come out until his senior year, so it
was hard to get him into the lineup, Chris Mortensen said Tuesday.
Alex felt like, 'God, if he had just been out on the team the year
before.'

Holyfield Jr., 19, is the oldest of Holyfield's nine children. He
transferred to Landmark from a New York prep school to be with his
father. Football turned out to be a bonus.

His senior year, we talked about him playing football, so he did and
absolutely fell in love with it, said Landmark football coach Kenny
Dallas. He just needs to play the game. I don't know if he will ever be
able to become a starting wide receiver for Auburn, but over the next
five years he is there, I wouldn't be surprised if he would reach that
point. He has all the potential in the world.

The younger Holyfield has hired a personal trainer to help get him ready
for the upcoming season and make up for lost time.

He could bring more than raw athletic ability to the Tigers.

Alex Mortensen made an unofficial visit to Auburn Wednesday, and a
connection to his former receiver could be an edge for the Tigers in
what figures to be an intense recruiting battle.

Chris Mortensen said Auburn is on his son's short list, along with LSU,
Arkansas and North Carolina State.

Alex Mortensen threw for 2,291 yards and 25 touchdowns with just six
interceptions as a junior at Landmark last year.

[RollTideFan] Big Wins in T-town?

2003-07-21 Thread Ricky McMahan
When was the last *BIG* win Bama had in T-town? LSU in 1999? BYU in
1998? We've lost a number of *BIG* ones, but the wins have been very few
during the past _ years. What has happened to our home stadium
magic? We need to get it back. September 6, 2003 will be a good time to
start!
