Let's stick to what we're talking about:

I appreciate that George flew over to visit the troops. But anyone who
thinks he did all that for any reason other than to make a big political
splash on a slow news day is absolutely delusional.

Subject: A First Hand Report

This was sent to me so I'm sharing it with
you.

 Subject: First Hand
Report Amazing, first-hand report of the President's
visit with the troops on Thanksgiving Day. Subject: An Email
from a Captain in Iraq An Email from a Captain in Iraq. We knew there
was a dinner planned with ambassador Bremer and
LTG Sanchez.  There were 600 seats available and all
the units in the division were tasked with filling a
few tables. Naturally, the 501st MI battalion got our table.
Soldiers were grumbling about having to sit through another
dog-and-ponyshow, so we had to pick soldiers to attend.  I chose
not to go. But, about 1500 the G2, LTC Devan, came up to me and with
a smile, asked me to come to dinner with him, to meet him in
his office at 1600 and bring a camera. I didn't really care about
getting a picture with Sanchez or Bremer, but when the division's
senior intelligence officer asks you to go, you go. We
were seated in the chow hall, fully decorated for thanksgiving
when all kinds of secret service guys showed up.  That was
my first clue, because Bremer's been here before and his
personal security detachment is not that big. Then BG
Dempsey got up to speak, and he welcomed ambassador Bremer and
LTG Sanchez. Bremer thanked us all and pulled out a piece of paper as
if to give a speech. He mentioned that the President had given him
this thanksgiving speech to give to the troops. He then paused
and said that the senior man present should be the one to give it. He
then looked at Sanchez, who just smiled.  Bremer then said that we
should probably get someone more senior to read the
speech. Then, from behind the camouflage netting,
the President of the United States came around. The mess hall
actually erupted with hollering.  Troops bounded to their feet
with shocked smiles and just began cheering  with all their
hearts. The building actually shook. It was just unreal. I was
absolutely stunned. Not only for the obvious, but also
because I was only two tables away from the podium. There
he stood, less than thirty feet away from me! The cheering
went on and on and on.  Soldiers were hollering, cheering, and a
lot of them were crying. There was not a dry eye at my table. When he
stepped up to the cheering, I could clearly see tears running
down his cheeks. It was the most surreal moment I've had in years. Not
since my wedding and Aaron being born. Here was this man, our
President, came all the way around the world, spending 17
hours on an airplane and landing in the most dangerous airport
in the world, where a plane was shot out of the sky not six days
before. Just to spend two hours with his troops. Only to get on a plane
and spend another 17 hours flying back. It was a great
moment, and I will never forget it. He delivered his
speech, which we all loved, when he looked right at me
and held his eyes on me. Then he stepped down and was just
mobbed by the soldiers. He slowly worked his way all the way around the
chow hall and shook every last hand extended. Every soldier who wanted
a photo with the President got one. I made my way through the
line, got dinner, then wolfed it down as he was still working the
room.  You could tell he was really enjoying himself. It wasn't
just a photo opportunity. This man was actually enjoying
himself! He worked his way over the course of about 90 minutes
towards my side of the room.  Meanwhile, I took the opportunity to
shake a few hands. I got a picture with Ambassador Bremer, Talabani
(acting Iraqi president) and Achmed Chalabi (another member of
the ruling council) and Condaleeza Rice, who was there with
him. I felt like I was drunk. He was getting closer to
my table so I went back over to my seat. As he passed and
posed for photos, he looked me in the eye and said "How you doin',
captain." I smiled and said "God bless you, sir." To which he responded
"I'm proud of what you do, captain." Then moved
on.

Basketball has a tourney, football does not. It is a valid comparison
whether you are aware of it or not.

The coaches poll is included in the BCS formula. I don't think you are going
to find a lot of people who would support the idea if making the coaches
poll the ONLY criteria for choosing who plays in the national championship
game of any expanded playoff, but you are certainly welcome to try.

Opposing a plyoff is very simple. I don't like wimpy shit. If you don't win
your games during the season, on the field, then I don't see why a coaches
poll or any BCS style formula should go give you a second chance. You should
have taken care of business during the season, not depend a second wimpy-ass
chance in a playoff.

The BCS system works. Last year it matched the two undefeateds in the
championship game and OSU won it and nobody bithched or moaned. This year,
all 117 teams entered the season with the chance to run the table and nobody
had what it takes to do it. So, in years like this, or if there were 3
legitimate undefeateds, then everybody starts screaming for a playoff that
lets a bunch of teams that have absolutely no right, due to their on the
field performance during the season, the opportunity to have a wimpy-ass
second chance.

The answer, in my opinion, is a "play-in," meaning that if you have teams at
#2 and #3 in the BCS formula that are within a reasonable distance of each
other, say 1.5 points, and have identical loss records, then they would play
a game the week following the conference chamionships and the winner of that
game would go to the championship game vs. #1 and the loser would be #3 and
play in the #3 spot in the BCS formula. This way, in years that it is not
needed, there is no play-in game and no crappy ass team that didn't take
care of business during the year gets an opportunity they don't deserve. In
years like this year, situations like the one we have now are avoided "on
the field."

Sure, someone would have to decide what teams got into
a playoff, but let the coaches do it, they know more

you said someone will get screwed this year but that

RE: [RollTideFan] What the hell...

2003-12-07 Thread Tim Boozer
Dude! You just contradicted the hell out of yourself!

How do you think they determine who gets into the basketball tourney? The
RPI rating (a computer rating system that nobody really knows how works) and
the ranking in the human polls are the two factors that a bunch of faceless
people called "the NCAA tournament Selection Committe" use to decide who
does and who does not get the opportunity to try to win six more games after
the actual season is over.

You criticise computers and "sports writing hacks" yet that is precisely
who/what would stand at the gates of any playoff and deem worthiness of
admission.

Championships should indeed be won on the field which is exactly the
argument AGAINST playoffs. A 2 or 3 loss team has absolutely no right
whatsoever to whine about not being allowed to play for any title because
you know what, they didn't win it on the field. They didn't take care of
business. Screw them! They should have won their friggin' games during the
season and the point would be moot.

Screw LSU, USC and Oklahoma. One of them will get screwed and should.

- Oklahoma had a chance to waltz into the Sugar bowl and blew by losing to a
3 loss KSU team.
- LSU had a chance for an undefeated season and certain trip to the Sugar
Bowl and blew it by losing to Florida.
- USC had a chance for an undefeated season and certain trip to the Sugar
Bowl and blew it by losing to Cal.

If you want to win a championship - win it! Don't whine about it.

It is more of a legitimate champion than letting
computers and sports writing hacks decide who they
think should be there. You have to win games in order
to be a champion, and if some team gets hot and beats
you, that's your problem. Championships should be won
on the field, not on some nerds computer.

RE: [RollTideFan] What the hell...

2003-12-07 Thread Tim Boozer
The "legitimate" champion argument is hogwash.

It does not produce a "legitimate" SEASON champion. The NCAA basketball
tourney produces a legitimate tournament champion which means that it
totally throws out the season and starts over. The team that can put 6 wins
together at the END of the season is crowned champion and the season itself
is relegated to second fiddle. B-ball season sucks. Hell, it's been going on
for 3 weeks and most of us could care less because we don't start getting
interested until the end of the season. I hate basketball season and I don't
want football season to end up the same way. Words like "legitimate" and
"mythical" are nice little sound bites, but that's all they all they are and
carry no weight.

Just say "no" to playoffs.

Screw the bowl tradition. Even highschool and peewee leagues have a
LEGITIMATE champion. Anyting other than a playoff crowns a mythical
champion. Roundball March Madness generates more interest than the bowl
games because it is a legitimate tournament which produces a legitimate
champion.

MORE FOOTBALL!

Looks like they got their butts whupped. Kansas was better prepared.
Someone forgot to tell Kansas State to lay down and Oklahoma wasn't ready.
I wonder what this will do to the BCS?

RE: [RollTideFan] What the hell...

2003-12-07 Thread Tim Boozer
Now you're talking! I'm a traditionalist.

A playoff takes the emphasis totally away from the season and 1 or 2 losses
during the season mean absolutely NOTHING anymore because all that matters
is getting into the playoffs, just like basketball season now, which
abso-fucking-lutely sucks. The tournament is semi-fun, but the season is
almost a meaningless warm-up to the tourney.

Scrap the BCS, go back to the old bowl system where the SEC champ goes to
the Sugar bowl and we all get to argue forever about who the national champ
is, not some silly tourney champion where a 2 or 3-loss team can get hot and
beat an undefeated team, then get named "NCAA Playoff Champion" but we would
all know that they got their asses whipped during the season and aren't the
national champs at all, but instead just a team that got hot at the end of
the season, like oh say, maybe um KANSAS FUCKING STATE.

A playoff sucks.
