I wanted to see a movie about Christ as well, but there is no story to this
movie. Jay Barker said this morning that he went last night & thought it
was a wonderful movie. I just have a problem watching people suffer.

RE: [RollTideFan] Movie Review (Non BAMA)

2004-03-05 Thread Joel Perry
You don't want people to think. How then would Dubya get any votes? ;-)

I feel that many of the folks who see this movie may, as you say, 'think'
about all that took place. But I wonder that if they will 'think' as a
result of the guilt they might feel after witnessing the crucifixion,
instead of the message He sent.

The shock of seeing how well a special effects group can make a movie seem
so real is amazing. Movies like The Passion, Saving Private Ryan and to some
extent, The Lord of the Rings have excellent special effects to help get the
message across. I haven't seen the movie, but from the reviews and stuff,
Mel may have relied on the brutality of the death too much for getting
across the message of the movie. Most of what I have read about the movie
isn't about the reasons for the death of Christ but about the way its
depicted. People remember the violence, but maybe not the reason for the
violence.

Did anyone see "The Last Temptation of Christ"?

I watch a show called "The making of The Passion" on A&E (I think). It went
into depth concerning a lot of the motivations Mel Gibson had in making it.
I have yet to see it, but I think it should be good to see a graphic
representation of how Christ suffered for our eternal salvation. I will
watch this one. I hope it shakes a lot of people up a little. Might
actually make them THINK some.

I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I
think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in
poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I traveled much,
and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were
made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course
became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more
they did for themselves, and became richer.

Oh but we're supposed to welcome them with friggin' open arms. Send them all
swimming back today. Let's completely close our southern borders and take
care of our own first.

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (AFP) - Hotel owners in the Mexican resort town of
Los Cabos have taken action to try to stop an onslaught of US "spring
breakers", mostly university students on short, often raucous holiday trips.
The Hotel Association of Los Cabos said its members have rejected any
special packages or discounts that might encourage the southward migration
of this wildlife "since they only come to do things they cannot do in their
own country," the group's president Alberto Coppel said.
"Our goal is to completely wipe out tourism by spring breakers," Coppel
said, rolling up his welcome mat even though it may hurt the bottom line.
Many more conservative Mexicans have been appalled by US TV shows and sexy
video peddlers filming drunken, breast-baring or worse exploits of spring
breakers on Mexican beaches and in Mexican bars from Los Cabos to Cancun,
Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta.

I have to disagree about being the worst movie ever! I liked it A LOT and
plan to go see it again. Now, as far as taken a 72 yo, that, I would
definitely agree.

Yes, it was gore and beating but I can see it happening just the way the
movie portrayed. I can also see where it could have been overkill.

I agree, I don't like to see the blood and gore movies but this one was
different. I did find myself during the beating wanting to stand up and
scream STOP IT!!! The soldiers had already been told once to stop but they
kept on. I know this movie is very controversial and not everyone will like
it and everyone will have different opinions about the movie too. I still
recommend the movie.

I have been very pleased with the realistic depiction of history
in movies over the past several years. It really make you think
about what really happen instead of some glossed over "poetic
license" which targets to make people feel good so they will buy
more tickets.

It is really amazing throughout history how wars and other
things were handled. In Gibson's "Braveheart" they showed
William Wallace being tied down, but I don't think they actually
showed him being fully "drawn and quartered". It's really
unbelievable people actually used to do this and think it was
okay.

Certainly brings to mind the concept of letting people see what
things really happen during executions and the like.

I think this was the purpose of the movie. The reason for the
violence is obvious and well known by devout Christians. It
probably won't "move" most casual Christian to find out more,
that's why they're casual Christians. They don't really care.
But I think it will move some to find out more, and that's
really what Gibson was after, from the interviews I've seen.

Too often in the past, the Passion has been glossed over and
toned down. "He suffered, died, and was buried, blah, blah,
blah, okay then what". It's important for people understand
what it really means "to suffer". Gibson had 2 hours to tell
a 12 hour story. He didn't need to cover the purpose of
Jesus' ministry. That's for another time. The title says it
all. The movie is about the suffering of the Christ.

I did many times, and even have it on videotape. I also have
the soundtrack by Peter Gabriel. Good stuff.

This movie is one of the best teaching tools for what Christ's
purpose was all about. It is a shame so many people just
looked at the pictures and didn't read the words.

2004-03-05 Thread TIDE1

"2 Groaners 4 Today"
..

"RANCHING"

A cattle rancher needs a bull to service his cows but needs to borrow
the breeding fee from the bank.  The banker lends him the money and
comes by a week later to see how his investment is doing.

The farmer complains that the bull just eats grass and won't even look
at the cows.  The banker tells the farmer that he knows a great
veterinarian, and that he'll send him out the next day to check out the
bull.

The next week the banker returns to see if the vet helped.  The farmer
looks very pleased and tells the banker, "The bull has serviced all my
cows, broke through the fence and has even serviced all my neighbor's
cows."

"Wow," says the banker.  "What did the vet do to that bull?"

"Just gave him some pills," replies the farmer.

"What kind of pills?" asks the banker.

"I don't know," says the smiling farmer, "but they sort of taste like
peppermint."

Did anyone see "The Last Temptation of Christ"?

Yepper I did. Certainly provided an alternative view of the life of Jesus (a
very "real" look, btw). Remember Willem Dafoe as Jesus? I thought he did a
good job with the role. The movie was just okay, but it did not do the book
justice. The book is mucho better.

He absolutely does! Got to love the heart and determination that that little
guy plays with every time on the court. I remember when he first started
getting significant playing time; he'd always provide a spark when he
entered the game. Remember how he used to slap his hands on the court as if

SAN FRANCISCO -- Rosie O'Donnell married her longtime girlfriend Thursday,
taking what she called a proud stand for gay civil rights in the city where
more than 3,300 other same-sex couples have tied the knot since Feb. 12.

''I want to thank the city of San Francisco for this amazing stance the
mayor has taken for all the people here, not just us but all the thousands
and thousands of loving, law-abiding couples,'' said the former talk show
host, holding a large bouquet after she and Kelli Carpenter emerged from
their brief ceremony in Mayor Gavin Newsom's office.

The couple were married by Treasurer Susan Leal, one of the city's
high-profile lesbian elected officials.

The newlyweds walked hand in hand down the grand marble staircase in the
rotunda to thunderous applause from hundreds of spectators who came to
witness the city's first celebrity same-sex wedding.

As the San Francisco's Gay Men's Chorus serenaded the couple with a few bars
of ''Chapel of Love,'' O'Donnell smiled and said: ''We really did. We got
married.''

O'Donnell told the crowd that she and Carpenter, who have been together six
years and are raising four children, decided to dash to San Francisco after
hearing President Bush endorse a proposed constitutional amendment banning
same-sex marriage Tuesday.

''We were both inspired to come here after the sitting president made the
vile and hateful comments he made,'' O'Donnell said.

The couple left New York at 5 a.m. in order to make their 1 p.m. appointment
in San Francisco to pick up their marriage license.

''One thought ran through my mind on the plane out here -- with liberty and
justice for all,'' O'Donnell said, drawing even more cheers as she held up
her hand in a peace sign. She and Carpenter then kissed for the cameras.

O'Donnell joked that with four children under the age of 8, they hadn't
planned a honeymoon.

City Hall has been transformed into a virtual wedding chapel since the city
began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Earlier, on ABC's ''Good Morning America,'' O'Donnell said she decided to
marry Carpenter, a former dancer and marketing director at Nickelodeon,
during her recent trial in New York over the now-defunct Rosie magazine.
During the case, she referred to Carpenter as her wife.

California Attorney General Bill Lockyer will ask the state Supreme Court
today whether San Francisco's issuing of same-sex marriage licenses violates
state law, which designates marriage as only between heterosexual couples.
