Storm may cost $20 billion
Insurance adjustors assess Charley's damage to Florida By Joseph B. Treaster
The New York Times

Saturday, August 14, 2004 - Damage inflicted by Hurricane Charley as it
ripped across the midsection of Florida on Friday and early Saturday could
exceed $20 billion dollars, making it one of the most costly storms in
history, economic analysts said.

Karen Clark, the chief executive of AIR Worldwide, a Boston firm that
provides damage assessments for insurance companies, said some of the most
severe destruction came from surging seas sweeping across the barrier
islands and beaches of Florida's Gulf Coast in the vicinity of Punta Gorda
as the hurricane first made landfall.

But Clark and field representatives of insurance companies said Orlando,
with its glistening downtown office towers, Walt Disney World and other huge
theme parks, was also hit hard even though the storm's gusts were
diminishing as it moved through the center of the state and skimmed past
Daytona Beach on its way to the Atlantic Ocean.

We have a swath of damage across the state, she said. Lee and Charlotte
Counties on the west coast were the hardest hit. But the damage in Orlando
is also significant.

Hundreds of house trailers were destroyed in Port Charlotte and surrounding
Charlotte County, said Loretta Worters, a spokeswoman for the Insurance
Information Institute, who is monitoring developments from New York for her
trade group. She said government buildings in the county suffered heavy
damage and that there were reports Saturday morning that fires had broken
out in the ruins of some houses near the town of Arcadia in Desoto County.
She said that a hospital in Arcadia was badly damaged and that the Turner
Agri-Civic Center there, where concerts and sports events have been held,
was destroyed.

The hurricane weakened moving into the Carolinas, and Clark estimated that
it might cause several hundred million more in damages there and farther up
the coast. Hurricane Charley may be the second-most devastating storm in
modern times after Hurricane Andrew, which battered South Florida in 1992 at
a cost of more than $25 billion.

RMS, a California company that also assesses storm damage for insurance
companies, estimated late Friday that the cost of Hurricane Charley to
insurers would be about $5 billion.

A much smaller portion of the damage of Hurricane Charley will be covered by
insurance than with Hurricane Andrew, industry experts said, because
flooding, for which most people do not have coverage, has been more
extensive in this storm and also because the insurance industry has shifted
a significant portion of hurricane damage costs to individual homeowners,
businesses and state government.

Clark estimated losses to the insurance industry could be $6 billion to $10
billion in Florida. That compares with $15.5 billion in insured losses in
Hurricane Andrew, which in today's dollars

Ryans defends collision after Croyle interception
By Gentry Estes

TUSCALOOSA — It was only funny because Brodie Croyle got up.

Yellow jerseys mean hands-off, and linebacker DeMeco Ryans pled his case later after
plowing a gold-crested Croyle while returning an interception during the Alabama
football team's scrimmage Monday.

I had my arm out, Ryans said smiling. He just ran into it.

Ryans' play meant immediate whistles on his interception return and a scattering of
laughter in the stands at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Decatur native Juwan Garth picked Croyle up immediately, checking to see if the Tide's
starting quarterback, who underwent offseason shoulder surgery, was OK.

He was, and the Crimson Tide could chuckle about it later, even coach Mike Shula.

We need to get (quarterbacks) coach (Dave) Rader work on tackling drills, Shula
joked, because I know 20 years ago, we worked on tackling drills. ... The only way
you can handle that is don't throw interceptions.

Early injuries: While most of Alabama's squad began Monday's scrimmage, 11 of them
were busy running stadium steps in full pads.
In all, the Crimson Tide held 13 players out of action, including linebacker Freddie
Roach, who's still recovering from minor knee surgery that he underwent before the
start of preseason practice.

Starting safety Charlie Peprah also missed the scrimmage after spraining his hamstring
during Friday's practice.

That's a little bit of a concern, Shula said. We've got to get those guys back, and
most of them should be back fairly soon.

Carlos Andrews filled Peprah's spot on the first-team defense, while Simeon Castille
filled in as the fifth defensive back on long-yardage downs.

First-team defensive end Todd Bates left the scrimmage holding his shoulder. Shula
later described Bates' injury as a stinger that shouldn't cause much trouble.

Brother, where you bound?: Short-yardage tailback Tim Castille had room to run around
his younger brother, but he didn't.
Instead, the elder Castille plowed into Simeon Castille, a younger, smaller cornerback
on an island between his brother and the end zone. Simeon wound up on his back and Tim
scored for the third straight play during goal line drills.

In four goal line attempts between Alabama's first-string offense and second-string
defense, the offense scored on all four.

The Castille brothers' meeting prompted defensive coordinator Joe Kines to chastise
the other defenders: Somebody get over here and help him!

Special teams: Several different players saw opportunities during Alabama's special
teams drills Monday. Brandon Brooks, Tyrone Prothro and Matt Caddell all broke long
punt returns, but tailbacks Brandon McAway and Theo Townsend weren't as successful
fielding kickoffs.
On the plus side, freshman kicker Jamie Christensen boomed the day's first kickoff
inside the 5-yard-line, and punter Bo Freeland's second effort traveled 51 yards in
the air. Freeland added kicks of 41, 34 and 34 yards.

Place-kicker Brian Bostick attempted four field goals, connecting from 46 and 31
yards, but missing from 48 (wide right) and 49 yards (short).

Quotable: The thing we did by design was throw it more. — Shula on his gameplan for
Monday's scrimmage.

The Pope, Billy Graham, and Oral Roberts were in a plane crash over the
Atlantic Ocean. Tragically they all died and went to the pearly gates
together. St. Peter was surprised to see them. Oh, dear! We weren't
expecting you and your quarters aren't ready yet. We can't take you in
and we can't send you back! Getting an idea, he picked up the celestial
phone and called Lucifer. I have three gentlemen who are ours, but
their places aren't ready yet. Could you put them up for a couple of
days? I'll owe you one. The Devil reluctantly agreed.

Two days later, St. Peter got a call. Pete, this is Lucifer. You have
to come get these three guys that are yours. This Pope guy is forgiving
everybody, the Graham fellow is saving everybody, and Oral Roberts has
raised enough money to buy air conditioning!

[RollTideFan] NCAA facing new lawsuit

2004-08-18 Thread Jeff Todd
Courtesy www.tuscaloosanews.com

by Christopher Walsh

Attorneys Tommy Gallion and Delaine Mountain are already working on two lawsuits
against the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and now have a third in the
on-deck circle.

Jim Johnson, who claims he was falsely accused of violating NCAA rules when the
University of Alabama was penalized in 2002, formally asked for an apology and the
lifting of his disassociation from the athletics program on Monday.

If the NCAA does not respond or issue a retraction within five days, a time limit
mandated by Alabama law, Johnson will apparently file a lawsuit to clear his name.

I am officially asking the NCAA for a public apology for defaming me and my
reputation, Johnson said in a statement. I ask the NCAA to clear my name with the
same vigor in which they defamed it. I have sworn testimony under oath as to my
involvement in the alleged violations, as have University of Alabama [former]
compliance officials Dr. Gene Marsh and Marie Robbins. All of the allegations against
me have been proven false and/or manufactured.

The NCAA ruled that a violation occurred when former Alabama linebacker Travis Carroll
received a 1994 Jeep from Johnson's dealership in Columbus, Ga., despite not providing
a down payment, trade-in or co-signer for a loan. It also cited the involvement of a
former assistant coach, Neil Callaway, who was friends with Johnson.

NCAA investigator Rich Johanningmeier told the NCAA Infractions Committee he believed
Johnson told Carroll that he didn't have to worry about making payments and warned him
against telling anyone.

However, the university disagreed and appealed Johnson's disassociation, among other
things, when Alabama was placed on five years probation, including a two-year bowl ban
and scholarship reductions.

Marsh said in his sworn affidavit: We disputed the allegations concerning a car
Travis Carroll purchased. I have expertise in credit transactions, and my analysis of
that transaction was presented to the NCAA to demonstrate that it was legal and
legitimate. Jim Johnson, who was vice president of the automobile dealership, came
over to Tuscaloosa and met with Mr. Johanningmeier, Marie Robbins and myself. He
explained the whole transaction in detail with documentation which I felt proved that
there were no violations.

According to the dealership's general manager, Steve Kash, 40 percent of its business
was considered on-the-spot sub-prime financing, which provided high interest loans to
very high-risk credit individuals, including many students.

I never owned or had title of the vehicle in question and could not have given Travis
Carroll this vehicle or free use of it, Johnson said. All of the records show that
no one gave this vehicle to him and the vehicle had to be reprocessed and/or picked up
by my employer for non-payment.

The NCAA noted the car was repossessed almost immediately after Carroll transferred
from Alabama. School officials testified that they believed it was a coincidence and
he did not receive any extra benefits.

Surely, the NCAA would not have appointed Dr. Marsh to such a high position as
chairman of the committee on infractions if they did not believe he was an intelligent
and truthful person, Johnson said.

He added: I again challenge the NCAA to do the right thing and admit their mistake.
That is all that I ask.

In addition to Johnson's statement, Gallion sent letters to both Johanningmeier and
NCAA president Myles Brand.

This matter has caused Mr. Johnson and members of his family great embarrassment and
humiliation, Gallion wrote. It has also cost Mr. Johnson severe financial losses.

The Montgomery-based attorney also recently sent a letter to ESPN's John Saunders
asking for a retraction on comments he recently made on the Sunday morning program
The Sports Reporters regarding Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer's decision not to
attend SEC Media Days.

Saunders compared the Kenny Smith lawsuit against Fulmer, the NCAA and others -- which
was dismissed in Alabama and will likely be re-submitted in Tennessee - to a bank
robber suing the witnesses who testified at his trial.

Gallion and Mountain, of Tuscaloosa, also represent former Alabama assistant coaches
Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams in their $60 million lawsuit against the NCAA and
others.

A scheduling plan for depositions submitted in Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court on July
30 has been approved.

Cottrell and Williams will give depositions by Sept. 1, and will followed by
recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper (by Oct. 15) and Johanningmeier (by a date to be
determined).

Meanwhile, in the Mike Price lawsuit against Time Inc., U.S. District Judge Lynwood
Smith of Birmingham has denied another motion by the plaintiffs for reconsideration to
lift the discovery stay while the confidential source issue is on appeal with the U.S.
Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.

and hit the door, ripping it off completely. When the police arrived at
the scene, the lawyer was complaining bitterly about the damage to his
precious BMW. Officer, look what they've done to my Beemer! he whined.
Geez! Could you be more materialistic? asked the officer. You're so
worried about your stupid BMW, you didn't even notice that your left arm

where his arm once was.

Oh my gosh! Where's my Rolex???!!!

[RollTideFan] BREAKING NEWS: No more Crimson Tide at Legion Field

TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama football fans who attended last year's game against
South Florida may want to save their ticket stubs, because it was almost certainly the
last Crimson Tide game will ever play at Legion Field.

A recent structural evaluation at Legion Field revealed that the East upper deck of
the stadium opposite the press box is no longer up to building code requirements and
will not be usable next season.

As a result, next year's Alabama game against Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 3, 2005,
will be played at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Although Alabama is under contract to play a final game at Legion Field in either 2007
or 2008, that game will also be moved to Tuscaloosa.

Alabama director of athletics Mal Moore confirmed discussions with the city's Park
Board in a telephone interview with The News on Wednesday night.

It is my understanding that the city of Birmingham will have some sort of release
tomorrow, Moore said. It would be premature for me to comment further until that
time.

With Bryant-Denny capacity up to 83,818, Alabama officials had already made clear
their intention not to renew the contract with Legion Field, which hasn't hosted a
marquee Crimson Tide game in more than a decade.

Middle Tennessee State does not object to the change of venue, although MTSU officials
have not yet received official notification on the news.

There have been discussions for some time, Middle Tennessee State athletic director
Boots Connelly said. They're having problems with the upper deck or something.

Because there is apparently no structural damage, Legion Field will continue to host
Alabama-Birmingham and other football games. However, the closing of the upper deck
will reduce capacity below the levels required for Alabama games.

Last season, the Blazers set a school attendance record of 42,000 during the 17-12
loss to Southern Miss. That number of fans could still easily fit into the lower bowl.

Nothing at the stadium has not been condemned, said stadium manager Walter Garrett,
who otherwise had no comment. There will be a press release in the morning.

The stadium was constructed in 1926 with an original capacity of 21,00.

The original construction was for $439,000.

As a comparison, recent repair and maintenance to the lower level alone cost $1.7
million.

Alabama has played 75 years at Legion Field, accumulating a 160-54-10 (.737) record,
beginning with a 20-6 loss to Georgia on Nov. 27, 1927.

It was the site of Paul Bear Bryant's first game as the Crimson Tide's head coach (a
scoreless tie against Vanderbilt on Oct. 4, 1958), and his 315th victory making him
the winningest coach in college football history.

More recently, Alabama won the first-ever SEC Championship Game there in 1992 en route
to the national championship. It was also the site Mike Shula's first coaching win, a
43-17 victory over South Florida on Aug. 30, 2003.

Legion Field has been Birmingham's home to numerous professional football teams
including the Americans and Vulcans of the World Football League, the Stallions of the
United States Football League, the Fire of the World League of American Football, the
Barracudas of the Canadian Football League and most recently the Bolts of the XFL.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association is under contract to have its Super Six
football championships, and regular-season games, played at Legion Field through 2007.

The latest renovations to Legion Field were completed in 1991. The East upper deck was
completed in the early 1960s, under different building codes.
