Game Day: Why the hostility? By Christopher Walsh Sports Writer October 23, 2004 http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041023/NEWS/41021026/1011 TUSCALOOSA | To some people in the state of Alabama, University of Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer brings to mind an old The Far Side cartoon by Gary Larson that also made a popular T-shirt. Its the one thats simply a view through a gun site of two bears. One is pretty much minding his own business, unaware of the impending danger. The other bear is sheepishly pointing to the first bear. These days, the shirt is no longer in widespread circulation. Instead, among those in vogue on the University of Alabama campus are, Fat Phil likes to squeal, Secret Witness, and U CheaT: I still hate Rocky Top. Without a doubt, Fulmer is perceived as the one person who has tried to damage, if not destroy, Crimson Tide football, and thus has arguably become the most hated man in Tuscaloosa. Consequently, the rivalry between Alabama (5-2, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) and No. 11-ranked Tennessee (5-1, 3-1), who will play today for the 87th time, has degenerated to where threats and lawsuits have become almost commonplace. In fact, the hatred has grown to the point that many Alabama fans were openly rooting for Auburn to beat Tennessee on Oct. 2. Honestly, before I got here, I didnt know the rivalry was that big, sophomore cornerback Ramzee Robinson said. I always thought the biggest rivalry game was Auburn, but particularly this year you see a lot of fans, more people saying Beat Tennessee than saying Beat Auburn. Or maybe Beat Phil would be more appropriate, especially with Tennessee winning eight of the last nine matchups, including last years gut-wrenching five-overtime game. It was disheartening, junior quarterback Spencer Pennington said. As a kid growing up watching my brother play from 92-96, and grew up around Alabama football, this is what you play SEC ball for, games like this. But mention Fulmers name around Tuscaloosa and you might hear words like back-stabber, two-faced, hypocrite and coward - and those are some of the nicer comments. And then there are the scores of jokes. For example, have you heard the one about if todays game was played at Bryant-Denny Stadium instead of Knoxville, the National Guard might have been needed in Tuscaloosa for the first time in 40 years? Or if Fulmer and Osama Bin Laden were both hiding in Alabama, who would be first discovered by a manhunt? The answer, of course, is it depends on if the manhunt is just issuing a subpoena from Montgomery attorney Tommy Gallion. Although the anti-Fulmer sentiment had been percolating for years, it came to a boil last year when court records from the Logan Young criminal case in Memphis indicated that Fulmer had been one of the secret witnesses in the National Collegiate Athletic Associations investigation of Alabama. In 2002, the Crimson Tide was placed on five years probation, including a two-year bowl ban and the loss of 21 scholarships. The bowl ban and scholarship sanctions have already been completed. Since then, the SEC has adopted the Fulmer Rule, that requires coaches to report concerns about other league schools to their athletic director, who would then pass it on to the conference office. Meanwhile, Fulmers attorneys have been very busy. Although not named as a defendant, Fulmer has been implicated in the impending $60 million Team Cottrell lawsuit against the NCAA and others brought forth by former Alabama assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams. However, former player Kenny Smith and his family named Fulmer along with the American Football Coaches Association and the NCAA in their $40 million defamation lawsuit. Originally filed in Alabama and dismissed due to jurisdiction, the Smith lawsuit is expected to be resubmitted in Tennessee in the near future. When told he would be subpoenaed by Cottrell attorneys Tommy Gallion of Montgomery and Delaine Mountain of Tuscaloosa, for a deposition at the preseason Media Days in Birmingham, Fulmer accepted a $10,000 fine from the SEC than risk crossing state lines. Fulmer instead gave his interview via conference call and blasted both his legal opponents and critics in the media - in both states. However, because Fulmer is named as a plaintiff in a complaint that would prevent coaches from being sued for their testimony, Gallion and Mountain recently filed their intention to make Fulmer give a deposition in Tennessee next month. I havent spent any time worrying about that, Fulmer said. My comments from the Southeastern Conference teleconference stand, and other than that were just working and trying to do our job here. Growing up as I did during the best years of his illustrious career made you a fan of Thomas. Thursday Thomas' name was on a list of nominees for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. There shouldn't be any question. He should be inducted. Despite the other names nominated this year, which include quarterbacks Dan Marino and Steve Young, wide receiver Michael Irvin, offensive lineman Nate Newton, defensive end Charles Haley and pass-rushing specialist Kevin Greene, Thomas stood out. Even among some of the NFL's greatest players, Thomas was special. He terrorized quarterbacks, forced opposing offenses to plan around stopping him and made the Kansas City Chiefs one of the league's best defenses for a decade. Thomas was the best of his era, the logical successor to Lawrence Taylor as a pass-rushing linebacker. He was a player so good they created a position for him: the Falcon. It allowed Thomas to move around the defense and do what he did best - rush the quarterback. But Thomas wasn't a one-dimensional player. He could tackle running backs, cover tight ends and running backs on passing routes and off the blocks of offensive linemen who often outweighed him by more than 100 pounds. Thomas, listed at 6-3 and a generous 247 pounds in his career, was too small to play the position he was most suited for, defensive end. He loved to rush the passer and he did it about as well as anyone. His favorite target was some guy named John Elway, whom Thomas sacked 17 times. For some linebackers, that might be a decent career in itself. The final tally: 730 career tackles, 126.5 sacks and an astounding 444 quarterback pressures. He also had 7.5 sacks in 10 postseason games, ranking among the best there. Thomas did his job so well he made the Pro Bowl nine times in his 11-year career. It's all the more sad that Thomas' career ended when he was still an extremely capable player - perhaps not the star he was early in his career, but still a key cog in a very good Chiefs' defense. His death of complications from injuries suffered in an auto collision shocked the sports world. Thomas was just 33 years old, and many fans hadn't realized the extent of his injuries when he went into the hospital. But for those who knew Thomas, his freakish abilities on the field weren't even the most important part of who he was. He tirelessly gave to his community and was a friend to almost everyone he met. He was a genuinely good person who happened to also be an extremely talented football player. He loved his family, loved football and loved his adopted home of Kansas City. His teammates loved him, his family loved him, opponents respected him and the members of his community appreciated the charity work he did. Derrick Thomas was an amazing player, but he was more than that. He is missed for all of the things he did, on and off the field. Bama Fans, one day, I don't know when, but one day Bama is going to win one of these close games in the 4th qtr and then things will turn around for them. Until that happens they will struggle with confidence problems. I can't help but wonder why the offense doesn't try to run outside more. Every running play seems to be geared toward running inside. With Darby's speed and his ability to make guys miss, I wish they'd run the toss sweep or do something to try to get the ball outside the ends. Damn, I'm hurting, I hate losing to Tennessee so much. LSU dominated the Troy game, but the score doesn't show it. LSU had 22 first downs, Troy had 9. LSU had nearly 400 yds total offense, Troy had 150. What made the score close was LSU had 4 turnovers, Troy had 0. LSU knows how to win a close game, Bama hasn't done it in a long time. I don't mean to throw a wet blanket on your optimism, Rusty, but until Bama turns the corner and actually wins one of these close games, I'll remain doubtful in our ability to win against good teams and you know LSU is a good team.
