[RollTideFan] Shula's first Iron Bowl could be good barometer

2003-11-22 Thread kurt rasmussen
http://www.datelinealabama.com/article/2003/11/22/5037_sports_art.php3

Shula's first Iron Bowl could be good barometer

Only three coaches in Alabama history have won their first meeting with
the Auburn Tigers. Mike Shula will attempt to become the fourth on
Saturday. But will a win, or a loss, tell the future of Shula at Alabama?

Dennis Pillion, managing editor

In a press conference Tuesday, Alabama head coach Mike Shula said the
upcoming Iron Bowl was "the biggest game I'll ever prepare for in my
career."

He may be more right than he knows. A coach's first Iron Bowl can have a
lot to with his approval rating among the citizens of the Alabama sports
nation.

There is no better example of this than in 2001. Alabama's first-year
coach Dennis Franchione had directed the team to a 4-5 record entering
the game, which was better than the 3-7 record the Tide had entering the
2000 Iron Bowl, but still not cause for celebration. Franchione's public
opinion polls jumped about 40 percentage points, however, when he took
the Tide to the plains of Auburn and laid a 31-7 beating on the Tigers.

After that, Franchione's Tide pounded Southern Miss in the rain and
narrowly defeated Iowa State in the Independence Bowl to give Alabama a
respectable 7-5 record, and a four-game winning stereak.

The Tide used momentum from that season to post a 10-3 record in 2002,
and would have appeared in the SEC Championship game had they not been
on probation.

In the 1990 season, Gene Stallings became the first Alabama head coach
to win the Iron Bowl on his first try since Harold "Red" Drew in 1948,
which was the first meeting between the two teams since 1907.

Stallings and the Tide won 16-7, breaking a four-game win streak for
Auburn, and two seasons later Alabama won its first national
championship since Paul "Bear" Bryant retired.

Stallings' successor Mike DuBose did not fare so well in his first Iron
Bowl. DuBose's team entered with a 4-6 record, and would have pulled out
an upset victory, but Alabama's Ed Scissum fumbled in the final minute
of the game, with Alabama leading 17-15. Auburn recovered the fumble and
Jaret Holmes hit the game-winning field goal to spoil DuBose's
near-success.

DuBose went on to lead Alabama to an SEC Championship in 1999, but then
resigned after going 3-8 in 2000, a season which Alabama began as the
third ranked team in the country.

None of this is to say that Shula will be a success or failure as a
coach based on what happens Saturday.

After all, the Bear himself lost his first Iron Bowl game in 1958. After
four straight Auburn wins, Bryant was almost able to upset the Tigers,
but a fourth-quarter interception ended those hopes. The Tide lost that
game 14-8, after being beaten by an average of 40 points per game in the
four previous meetings.

After the game, Bryant directed the Tide to four straight wins over
Auburn, outscoring them by a combined 85-0. Bryant was 19-6 against
Auburn in his 25 years at the Capstone.

Should Shula win his first Iron Bowl, it will at least take some
pressure off of him, after directing the Tide to a losing record this
year.

In fact, it would be a lot like 1984, his first year to play quarterback
in the Iron Bowl. Shula and the Tide had a 4-6 record and were heavy
underdogs, but edged Auburn 17-15 after stopping Auburn on
fourth-and-goal from the one. Alabama's Rory Turner stopped Auburn
fullback Brent Fullwood when lead-blocker and future-Heisman
Trophy-winner Bo Jackson ran the wrong way on the play.

The next year, Shula led the Tide to another nail-biting win over
Auburn. In a play known simply as "the kick," Van Tiffin nailed a
52-yard field goal as time expired to give Alabama a 25-23 win over
Auburn and Jackson, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy that year.

Shula was 2-1 overall against Auburn as a player.

NCAA sanctions for Bama

It is my understanding that Logan Young may be cooperating with federal
& NCAA investigators thru his attorney, Jim Neal of Nashville, who
brokered Jake Butcher's deal & is a former Watergate prosecutor, to pay
a hefty fine & avoid a jail term by nailing Bama to the wall & singing
like a canary under oath about alleged violations that date back several
years. However, since the NCAA of Bama is still open & since their
probation extends 3 years beyond the bowl ban than ends after this
season, the NCAA is expected to announce that they are sending Bama a
new letter detailing some of this new material, sounding the death knell
for a once proud program that has cheated since the days of Bear. I
expect there to be some news on this that will break as soon as next
week, along with other possible indictments of some of Gallion's minions.

Losers are never lovable in these good sports' eyes

By BERNIE LINCIOME, Scripps Howard News Service
November 16, 2003
Sports has winners. Sports has losers. Sudden-death overtime and extra
innings see to that. So for all the losers out there, let's take in e
wisdom of others who have lost and lived to tell about it.

"More good lessons come from the disasters than from the successes. You
learn from your screw-ups." - former football coach Chuck Noll.

"Adversity makes champions." - former football coach Tom Landry.

"Pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever." - cyclist Lance Armstrong.

"Every time you win, you're reborn. When you lose, you die a little." -
former football coach George Allen.

"Showing up is 80 percent of life." - filmmaker Woody Allen.

"Winning is only important in war and surgery." - basketball dreamer Al
McGuire.

"Winning isn't everything, it is the only thing." - former football
coach Vince Lombardi.

"Do not pursue victories but human communication instead." - Chairman Mao.

"There's room at the top, but not enough to sit down." - former hockey
coach Fred Shero.

"Fear of losing is what makes competition so great. Show me a gracious
loser, and I'll show you a perennial loser." - former football player
O.J. Simpson.

"Show me a good loser, and I'll show you an idiot." - former baseball
manager Leo Durocher.

"All quitters are good losers." - former college football coach Bob Zuppke.

"There never was a champion who to himself was a good loser. There's a
vast difference between a good sport and a good loser." - former
football coach Red Blaik.

"I'd rather be a football coach. That way you can only lose 11 games a
season." - former basketball coach Abe Lemons.

"If a tie is like kissing your sister, losing is like kissing your
grandmother with her teeth out." - baseball Hall of Famer George Brett.

"Even Napoleon had his Watergate." - former baseball manager Danny Ozark.

"If the meek are going to inherit the earth, our linemen are going to be
land barons." - Tampa Bay Bucs offensive coordinator Bill Muir.

"We have the sweetest, finest bunch of kids in the world, and I love
every one of them, but they're not tough enough. If we don't get some
sure-enough, way-down-deep meanness, we're not going to beat anybody." -
Alabama legend Bear Bryant.

"There is no heavier burden than a great potential." - Linus.

"Failure is another steppingstone to greatness." - Oprah Winfrey.

"Losing a game is heartbreaking. Losing your sense of worth is a
tragedy." - football coach Joe Paterno.

"You might have to fight a battle more than once to win it." - Margaret
Thatcher.

"No one knows what to say in the loser's room." - Former heavyweight
boxing champion Muhammad Ali.

"Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan." - John F.
Kennedy.

"No one promises you tomorrow." - the late, great Walter Payton.

"The sun doesn't shine on the same dog every day." - former quarterback
and football coach Steve Sloan.

"The biggest laughs are based on the biggest disappointments and the
biggest fears." - writer Kurt Vonnegut.

"Ninety-nine percent of failures come from people who have the habit of
making excuses." - George Washington.

"I give the same halftime speech over and over. It works best when my
players are better than the other coach's players." - former football
coach Chuck Mills.

"Class is when they run you out of town, to look like you're leading the
parade." - former football coach Bill Battle.

"You don't feel the splinters on the way up, only when you start sliding
back down the ladder. - former football coach Bum Phillips.

"If 'ifs and buts' were candy and nuts, wouldn't it be a merry
Christmas?" - former football player and broadcaster Don Meredith.

"When that one great scorer comes to write beside your name, He writes
not if you won or lost, but how you played the game." - former
sportswriter Grantland Rice.

"We made too many wrong mistakes." - former baseball player and manager
Yogi Berra.

"A man is not finished when he's defeated; he's finished when he quits."
- former president Richard Nixon.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The sister of Tennessee defensive tackle Greg

Saturday as they traveled to the Volunteers' game.

Coaches told Jones, a sophomore from Jonesboro, Ark., the news before

The names of Jones' relatives were not immediately available, and

NCAA insists confidentiality necessary to its work, trial
Judge doesnt rule on motion filed in Cottrell suit
TUSCALOOSA | The assurance of confidentiality is the cornerstone" of
NCAA investigations, without which witnesses would provide little
information and the organizations enforcement efforts would become
ineffective, an NCAA attorney said Friday.

Confidentiality must be protected so the process will work," said
Robert Rutherford, a Birmingham attorney representing the NCAA in a
multi-/smillion dollar lawsuit filed by two former University of Alabama
assistant football coaches.

The legal debate over whether some documents should be confidential in
the suit filed by Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams entered a Tuscaloosa
County circuit courtroom Friday. After 90 minutes, the hearing ended
without a ruling from Judge Steve Wilson.

Wilson also made no ruling on whether to allow The Tuscaloosa News to
intervene in the case.

The coaches filed the suit after an NCAA investigation into the Crimson
Tide football program found UA boosters offered improper inducements to
recruit Memphis, Tenn., high school football player Albert Means and
other athletes.

It landed the Crimson Tide on probation and limited the number of
scholarships the program could offer, while also leading to the
dismissal in December 2000 of head football coach Mike DuBose and his
staff. Cottrell and Williams, two assistants under DuBose, claim they
havent been able to find reliable work since.

The former coaches are requesting, among other information, the entire
investigative file in preparation for trial.

But the NCAA says the majority of the file has nothing to do with the
suit, and contains information obtained from confidential sources. The
NCAA would breach confidentiality agreements if the information became
public, and the effectiveness of future investigations would be
jeopardized, the organization argued.

That information was given to the NCAA and University of Alabama under
assurances from both that it would be confidential," Rutherford said.

The NCAA and enforcement representative Richard A. Johanningmeier asked
the judge to order that papers, documents, disks, transcripts of
depositions and other records be kept private. They havent specified
which documents they want confidential.

Instead, Rutherford proposed that the NCAA label information it wants
confidential as the case proceeds. If the coaches attorneys agree that
a certain piece of information should be kept confidential, then it will
remain so. If not, the court would decide.

Delaine Mountain, an attorney representing the former coaches, argued
that the method would place an undue burden on the plaintiffs. He
labeled the proposal an effort by the NCAA to slow the court process.

They want to stamp everything confidential and then gag us about it and
protect everything theyve done," Mountain argued. We dont operate
that way in America. The NCAA operates that way, and they ought to quit."

Freelance sports recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper, another defendant in
the suit, has asked the judge to order that testimony and other
pre-trial information Culpepper has provided be kept confidential.

The public release of the information could threaten future employment
opportunities for Culpepper, his attorney said. It could also violate
confidentiality agreements Culpepper has made.

Mountain told the judge that he understood the confidentiality agreement
Culpepper was referring to was made with the NCAA.

Its an unusual situation, he said, When two defendants in a lawsuit
get together and say, 'Were going to have a confidentiality agreement."

Meanwhile, The Tuscaloosa News asked the judge in a motion filed
Wednesday to allow it to intervene and oppose the confidentiality
requests by the NCAA, Johanningmeier and Culpepper.

Emphasizing the newspapers objective role in the overall case, attorney
Gary Huckaby said The Tuscaloosa News came to assert the rights of the
media, and the public, to judicial proceedings and records.

Huckaby argued that the NCAA, Johanningmeier and Culpepper want the
right to determine on their own what information, if any, can be
released to the public without showing good cause. To obtain good cause,
the defendants would need to present evidence that the court believes
supports their requests to keep information confidential.

The defendants, Huckaby said, would virtually be delegated complete
control over the records in the case.

Absent good cause, we have...an offense to the First Amendment,"
Huckaby said.

John Scott, Culpeppers attorney, and Rutherford asked that they be
given time to respond to The Tuscaloosa News motion to intervene,
having received notice two days before the hearing. The judge gave the
attorneys 10 days to respond.

Scott said the protective order Culpepper is reque

[RollTideFan] OU band played Yea, Alabama?

2003-11-14 Thread kurt rasmussen
apparently not.

http://www.al.com/sports/huntsvilletimes/jpruett.ssf?/base/sports/1068830204105090.xml

A couple of usually reliable chaps passed along an amusing tidbit
earlier this week, claiming the Oklahoma band played "Yea, Alabama'' for
Dennis Franchione's benefit during the Sooners' 77-0 rout of Texas A&M
last Saturday.

We tacked a line to that effect on the end of a column about Jeremiah
Castille's appearance Tuesday night at the Huntsville Quarterback Club.
Turns out, it didn't happen that way.

Brian Britt, director of the "Pride of Oklahoma'' band, clarified the
situation in an e-mail. "Though I received hundreds of calls and e-mails
during the week leading up to our game with Texas A&M requesting that
our band play 'Yea, Alabama,' we did not do so,'' Britt wrote.

Rather than condoning unsportsmanlike behavior, he said, the band
refrained.

"While many fans would probably be glad if we had played it,'' Britt
said, "I am sure that many others would be very disappointed in us for
doing so. We feel that any sort of personal attack on a visiting player
or coach is inappropriate at any athletic contest, and as such, we don't
condone or permit such actions by members of our band individually or
collectively.''

Britt said the Oklahoma band has the utmost respect for Alabama and its
"Million Dollar Band,'' that Oklahomans enjoyed their visit to Alabama
in early September, and that "the unfortunate manner in which Coach
Franchione left the University of Alabama is not our business.''

He added: "We sincerely hope Alabama and its loyal fans will have many
great football seasons in the future. Your football tradition is among
the strongest in the country and you obviously have much to be proud of.

"I hope that sets the record straight and that everyone will understand
our decision regarding this issue, even if they choose to disagree.'' [...]

BREAKING NEWS: Judge hears arguments in ex-UA coaches' lawsuit

By Scott Parrott
Staff Writer
November 14, 2003
TUSCALOOSA | The legal battle over whether to keep documents
confidential in the multi-million dollar lawsuit filed by two former
University of Alabama assistant football coaches against the NCAA
entered the courtroom this morning, ending without a decision by the judge.

Attorneys for the NCAA, NCAA enforcement representative Richard A.
Johanningmeier and freelance sports recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper
argued that the release of certain documents could damage their clients.

Delaine Mountain, a Tuscaloosa attorney representing the former coaches,
argued that the defendants were trying to "hide things under a barrel,"
and attempting to keep the truth from the public in the high-profile case.

Tuscaloosa County Circuit Judge Steve Wilson made no official ruling as
to whether to allow The Tuscaloosa News to intervene in the case, but an
attorney for the newspaper presented its argument, addressing the rights
of the media and the public to judicial proceedings and records, during
the 90-minute hearing. The Tuscaloosa News filed a motion Wednesday
asking the judge to deny requests by the defendants to keep records secret.

The former coaches claim they have been unable to find reliable work
since the December 2000 dismissal of former Crimson Tide head football
coach Mike DuBose and his staff. Cottrell and Williams were assistants
under DuBose. The dismissal followed an NCAA investigation into the
Crimson Tide football program that found that UA boosters had offered
improper inducements to recruit Memphis, Tenn., high school football
player Albert Means and other players.

See Saturday's Tuscaloosa News for more from Scott Parrott on the
Cottrell/Williams lawsuit

Newspaper files motion to keep records open in Cottrell suit
Associated Press
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - A Tuscaloosa newspaper filed a motion Wednesday
asking a judge to deny requests by the NCAA and other defendants to keep
the public from seeing some records in a lawsuit filed by two former
Alabama football coaches.

The Tuscaloosa News is seeking to ensure that Tuscaloosa County Circuit
Judge Steve Wilson allows such records as documents, computer disks and
deposition transcripts to be made public.

Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams have sued the NCAA and six other
defendants, including NCAA enforcement representative Richard A.
Johanningmeier, for defamation.

The NCAA and Johanningmeier have asked Wilson to order that the records
be kept confidential. Recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper has made a
similar request.

The judge will consider the motions in a hearing Friday.

The newspaper, which reported its filing on its Web site Wednesday, said
the defendants' requests were "not designed to protect specific
information" but would allow them "to designate whatever information
they found objectionable and thereby prohibit public dissemination."

The former coaches are seeking $15 million in compensatory damages and
$45 million in punitive damages, claiming they have been unable to find
comparable employment since being implicated in the NCAA investigation.

morning, headed toward his lake house in Coeur dAlene, Idaho.

Joyce and I sold our house today and upon departure we want to thank
those of you who have supported us, Price wrote in a letter to the
editor that he brought by the office of The Tuscaloosa News.

Price said that he is exploring other coaching opportunities and has
officially applied for the head coaching position at the University of
Arizona, where Athletic Director Jim Livengood-who hired Price at
Washington State-currently heads the athletics department.

We havent had any conversations yet, but that should be coming to a
head soon, Price said.

Prices departure from Tuscaloosa follows almost six months to the day
his dismissal by UA President Robert Witt amid allegations of drunken
behavior at a pro-am golf tournament in Pensacola, Fla.

Price, who replaced former head coach Dennis Franchione, admitted being
intoxicated at a topless bar, but said his actions did not warrant his
removal.

The former coach said he will miss Alabama and those who have stood by him.

People have been real nice here to us and I appreciate all the good
words they have given me, he said Friday.

In the months since the incident, Price has not forgotten his former
players or his former team. He has videotaped every Alabama game,
watching them two or three times each, he said.

Im going to miss these Alabama football players, he said. Theyre a
tremendous bunch of young men and great players. They just ran out of
time in a couple of games.

Price and his wife will head back to the Pacific Northwest to be near
their daughter, who lives in Spokane. The former coach was hired from
Washington State in December 2002. Coeur d'Alene is near Pullman, the
home of Washington State.

His sons, Eric Price, formerly offensive coordinator, and Aaron Price,
formerly kickers coach, remain in Tuscaloosa, although they are
currently looking for employment.

The two of them have been traveling all over in an RV, going to
practices and watching games all over Florida and the Midwest.
Ive been doing pretty much the same thing too, but not as hard as
them, Price said.

If Florida, Georgia and Tennessee win the rest of their SEC games,
(Florida vs Vandy, @ USC; Georgia v Auburn, v UK; Tennessee v MSU, v
Vandy, @ UK), the three teams will tie for first place in the SEC
East.
The first tiebreaker, head-to-head among the tied teams, will not
break the tie, since the teams are 1-1 vs each other.
The second and third tiebreakers, record within the division and
record vs individual teams within the division, will not break the
tie, since the teams will each be 4-1 within the division with the
only losses coming vs each other.
The fourth tiebreaker, record vs non-division teams, will not break
the tie, since each team will be 2-1 vs SEC West teams.
The fifth and sixth tiebreakers, combined record vs common
non-division teams and record vs individual teams within the division,
will not break the tie, since not all three teams share common
non-division opponents.
Which leaves us with the 7th tiebreaker:

Vote of Athletic Directors whose institution is not involved in the
tie.
So it would be up to the AD's of Kentucky, Vandy, USC, and the 5 SEC
West teams that lost their division (The SEC West champ doesn't get to
vote on their opponent in the SEC Championship game).
Who should they pick? [...]

Tank Gawd fer the west!! ?

Please let me recap what was said tonight and correct a few
misconceptions. I never stated Bama "will get all 6 scholarships back"
but this is what I did say and you can listen to this Crimson Wraith. A
poster noted a news update from Bamamag about a possible kicker getting
a scholarship and I knew people would start yelling and screaming about
Shula wasting a scholarship. So this is why I decided to go ahead and
post what I did.
I said that there maybe some positive news coming out that would explain
this possible offer. I already knew that they were talking about giving
a big time kicker an offer. Why do you think the kid said he did not
know yet if UA would offer. Well here is why.
UA has been working w/ the NCAA and in conjunction w/ the Pres to try
and get some relieve maybe not all 6 but at least some. The Pres of the
NCAA came down to visit and is highly impressed w/ our Pres and how
things have turned around at UA. I never once said it would happen. I am
sorry that I may have created false hope but I knew everyone would be
worried about Shula offering the kicker so I could not resist.
As for all these posters like Crimson Wraith who came on and attacked me
for my post saying things like "put up or Shut up". All I can say is
that this info comes from really good sources who are close to the
program. However the difference is that when I was told this I did not
attack my source and say "How the hell do you know" or "Give me the
facts". You know why b/c he did not guarantee anything and I surely
don't expect him too. He knows I can handle it if they do not give us
relief. I am not going to get mad like some of you do. I appreciate him
letting me know that this was going on and I thought most of you would
to. I can tell you a million things he has told me in the past that have
been accurate.
Beleive it or not but we are trying to get some back and that is not a
rumor. I can tell you this. I learned a valuable lesson tonight about
this board and I can assure you I will never let it happen again.

Why can't we ever get this kind of info on the RTF message board? ;-)
