Alabama linebacker Nance arrested in Sheffield bar incident

*The Associated Press*
*8/31/2004, 6:04 p.m. CT*
SHEFFIELD, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama freshman linebacker Earnest Lee Nance
was arrested Tuesday on disorderly conduct charges stemming from a bar
incident, police said.

Nance went to the Sheffield Police Department with his attorneys to turn
himself in, according to a statement released by Police Chief Doug
Aycock. He was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and
released on bond.

A court date was set for Sept. 22.
Aycock said Nance was involved in an incident at the Fiesta Club in
Sheffield early Sunday morning. In a story reported before Nance's
arrest was announced, Aycock told The Tuscaloosa News that there had
been a fight at the bar and that a suspect had displayed a firearm in
his waistband and told an officer he was an Alabama football player.

When the officer grabbed his arm, the gun fell to the ground and the
suspect fled the bar, Aycock told the newspaper.

Nance, who redshirted in 2003, rushed for 827 yards and nine touchdowns
and had 84 tackles before sustaining a season-ending knee injury as a
senior at Courtland High School.

Sheffield is located in Colbert County in northwest Alabama, about 108
miles from the University of Alabama's campus in Tuscaloosa.

Reese to walk on, Mo to Bucks

By Alex Merritt
Sports Editor
August 25, 2004

Alabama walk-on basketball player Jason Reese said he will attempt to be just the
second Crimson Tide basketball player to walk on to the football team in 55 years.

Reese, a 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound guard on the basketball team, said he wants to try
to contribute on special teams and then, eventually, at wide receiver on the gridiron.

Reese last played football his freshman year of high school at Briarwood Christian,
stepping in at running back, linebacker and defensive end. Reese said if he made the
team he would still rejoin the basketball team after football season ended.

While rare at Alabama, there is precedent for basketball players lettering in football
as well. The most notable was Jim Whatley, the last four-sport athlete at the
University. Whatley lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track, earning a
total of 10 letters.

His astounding career ended with one SEC Tournament championship in basketball (1934),
one national championship in football (1934) and three SEC baseball championships.

The most recent athlete at Alabama to try both sports was Marcus Webb, a scholarship
basketball player from 1989-91. Webb, however, never played in a football game but did
contribute in practice. Before Webb, no athlete had played both sports at Alabama in
40 years. [...]

[RollTideFan] The thin red line

The thin red line
Tuesday, August 24, 2004
By THOMAS MURPHY
Sports Reporter
Here's a prime example of how suddenly Alabama's thin scholarship talent at any given
position can be exposed in the course of a couple of days, or a few plays.

Due to attrition at defensive tackle, sophomore walk-on Allen Long was forced to run
some drills with the first-team defense late in Monday morning's practice. Grappling
with the veteran interior offensive linemen alongside Long was Rudy Griffin, a junior
from The Citadel who was just awarded a scholarship this fall.

With 11 days remaining until the Sept. 4 season opener, it can't be encouraging to see
most of the Crimson Tide's top defensive tackles nicked or hobbling.

The Tide's defensive tackle dilemma actually began last week, when Justin Britt, who
projects as an impact freshman, had a shoulder pop out of socket. Britt is not
overextending himself in contact work in an effort to heal before the opener.

In Saturday's scrimmage, Dominic Lee got tangled in a pile on a running play and came
up with a gimpy left ankle, the same one he had surgery on in the spring.

"My ankle was planted and Evan (Mathis) fell on it," Lee said. "It was just a freak
accident, nothing I could control. I had a pre-existing injury in my ankle anyway."

Lee was dressed Monday in an orange jersey, signifying an injured player, and was held
out of practice as a precautionary measure.

Then starter Jeremy Clark of Daphne began limping around again, forcing his removal
from the work. Clark rolled an ankle last week and has battled cramps in camp.

Anthony Bryant, a projected starter who has yet to work his way back into the top unit
due to an abdominal strain, went down at the end of practice and did not return.

Enter Long.

None of Alabama's growing number of injured players appear lost for any great length
of time but the onset of nagging injuries has emerged as one of the themes for
Alabama's camp.

Linebacker DeMeco Ryans is still wearing a protective boot on his sprained right ankle
and he won't be back this week.

"We'll see how he goes next week," Alabama coach Mike Shula said. "We're trying to get
it to heal as quickly as we can."

Ryans was a force at what was one of the Tide's deepest positions before his injury.

"We'll see how it goes," said Ryans, who would not speculate on his availability
against Utah State in the season opener. "I'm just taking it day to day."

Now it appears the extra reps Freddie Roach was being given at outside linebacker make
defensive coordinator Joe Kines look smart for his foresight. Roach and Theodore's
Juke King split reps on the outside Monday.

On the positive side, middle linebacker Cornelius Wortham (foot) and defensive end
Todd Bates (stinger) were back at practice. Also, reserve linebacker Demarcus Waldrop
returned from a concussion he suffered early last week.

Fellow linebacker Terrence Jones (concussion) and safety Charlie Peprah (hamstring)
might get the go-ahead to practice midway through the week.

Receiver Tyrone Prothro also donned the orange after grabbing four catches for 51
yards and a touchdown in Saturday's scrimmage.

"I've got a little ankle injury," Prothro said. "I've got to keep icing it and keep
getting treatment. I just turned it over, so it's nothing too serious."

Booze & Broads
By MARK KRIEGEL
Saturday, August 21st, 2004
End Zone
Excerpted from "Namath," a biography published by Viking for release
tomorrow.

It was October, an autumn for all that Jimmy Cannon held dear. A quarter
of a century had passed since Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak, and fifteen
years since Joe Louis's last fight. The athletes Cannon commemorated as
avatars of the strong, silent virtues were no longer athletes. Like him,
they were on the far side of middle age.

Cannon was 56. His column now appeared in something called the World
Journal Tribune. Nicknamed "the Widget," it was a hastily assembled
combination formed from the remains of the Journal-American, the
World-Telegram and Sun, and the Herald Tribune. Those papers, like so
much of Cannon's New York, had been rendered obsolete or extinct in this
age of television. The Widget itself only had a few more months to live.

Today, October 17, 1966, Jimmy Cannon was scheduled to interview Joe
Namath. If it were his call, they probably would've met at Shor's. But
it wasn't his call, was it? The kid had only been here two years, but
already he was as big as Mickey Mantle, which was to say, bigger than
anyone else in town. Namath wanted to meet at a joint on 49th off
Second. They ought to call this kid Second Avenue Joe.

The sky was a flash of periwinkle - "Garish dusk," as Cannon would
describe it. The joint was called the Pussycat. The short, sweet-faced
girl at the hat check was called JoJo, and her boyfriend, a corpulent
Lucchese gangster, was known as Mr. Gribs. His real name was Carmine
Tramunti. He was treated with great respect in the Pussycat, as was
another wiseguy, Tommy (Tea Balls) Mancuso. But none of that concerned
the old sportswriter or the young quarterback. Joe was much more
interested in the Chinese food, spare ribs with duck sauce and mustard
and pork fried rice. The Pussycat aspired to be like Jilly's with a
younger crowd. The girls were a good draw. The dancers from the Copa ate
for free. The Bunnies from the Playboy Club were on scholarship, too.
Namath liked the girls even better than the pork fried rice.

The bartender was setting up for cocktail hour. They didn't have
bartenders like this in Cannon's day. Her name was Linda. The way she
was dressed reminded Cannon of a bathing suit with stockings. He was a
long way from Shor's.

Now, at the Pussycat, Namath ordered a beer.
Cannon, who hadn't had a drink in years, was obliged to give the kid his
due. "This guy doesn't try to duck it," he would write. "He knew what I
intended to interview him about. This is where he chose to meet me. It
was as though he would be a phoney if he had steered me to a squarer place."

The meeting had been occasioned by Namath's performance in Houston the
day before. The issue wasn't the four interceptions, but the bitterly
facetious remarks about booze and broads that required clarification.
The partying, Namath declared, had nothing to do with the defeat. "Why
don't they accept we just got beat?" he asked. Namath insisted he'd
never do anything to jeopardize his career. He studied the game. He got
his sleep. "I'm not going to let having a good time affect my physical
status," he said. "The way some people put it, they got me an alcoholic."

Namath tapped his beer glass with his thumb, as if to remind the
columnist that this had all been caused by the insidious politics of
appearance, the gossip that fills the gaps between reputation and
reality. Cannon gladly took Joe at his word. Then again, there was a
reason ballplayers weren't supposed to hang out in places like the Pussycat.

"I'm no hypocrite," said Namath. "I don't hide anything."
That was a curious concept for a man of Cannon's generation, for whom
subterfuge was an accepted practice, especially for a star ballplayer
dealing with the rigors of public life. Shor's, and all the places like
it, were men's clubs. Booze was the sacrament. But broads were something
different. Broads were mostly a secret vice. How many times had DiMaggio
borrowed the keys to Cannon's room at the Edison Hotel? In public,
DiMaggio appeared regal and expressionless. He considered fame an
irritant, an embarrassment. Fame was a bright beam in his eyes. But when
the lights went down, the Dago came alive.

Joe Louis was another one who epitomized the wordsmith's notion of
wordless grace. But the maintenance of such dignity was a burden. For
Louis, the price of fame remained a secret - just like all the tea he
smoked to ease his mind.

And now this Namath had the balls to sit there with a beer and proclaim:
I have nothing to hide.

He resided in a penthouse with a llama-skin rug that looked like dry ice
- or so all the magazines said. There was an oval-shaped bed with a
mirror suspended above.

Who'd have thought Cannon would live to see a football player living
like a space-age pimp? Still, unlike t

[RollTideFan] Poll shows Bama fans going soft

Poll shows Bama fans going soft
Saturday, August 21, 2004
It has been nearly a week since the Mobile Register-University of South
Alabama poll was published, indicating that Alabama football coach Mike
Shula was the most popular thing to hit our state since sweet tea.
However, in looking deeper at the numbers, I found the poll results to
be even more astonishing than after the first read.

The results showed that 58 percent of the respondents felt Shula was
doing either a good or excellent job, which led me to a rather
predictable retort: "Were these people watching the same football games
last year that I was?"

When you get deeper in the numbers, and cut out the Auburn fans who were
polled in the survey, the results were stunning: A staggering 73 percent
of Alabama fans polled are happy with Shula.

It's evident this poll did not include a Birmingham native who now
serves President Bush as national security advisor. Condoleezza Rice and
James Carville (an LSU man) are featured in this week's Sports
Illustrated talking college ball.

In response to a question of which coach is on the hottest seat, Rice
said: "I would have to say Mike Shula. The expectations of Alabama are
so high and so tough. I lived there and I understand how tough they are."

Putting aside the view from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., there are many
conclusions one can draw. I have always felt Alabama fans were some of
the most astute observers of football I've ever encountered, in part
because they follow it so intensely. However, in Shula's case, in giving
him a deserved free pass for what happened last year, is it possible
that some of the fans surveyed have completely lost all objectivity and
ability to reason?

Over and over, fans have proclaimed the usual litany of excuses about
last season, from the coaching turnover to the NCAA scholarship cuts.
But now a new one has snuck into the equation.

The cry from many I have spoken with is this: Alabama was in just about
every game but one or two. Was that sound we all heard Bear Bryant
rolling over in his grave?

There's nothing wrong with giving Shula time to get a handle on this
program. However, Alabama fans need to quit sounding like those from
Vanderbilt when trying to rationalize the results.

I heard a fan arguing the point the other day that Alabama was even in
the Georgia game. After all, he said, the final was 37-23. But what fans
conveniently forget is the Tide was disgraced for much of the game,
going down 30-3 midway through the second quarter. Had this been pee-wee
football, the "mercy rule" would have been instituted and we would have
all gotten out of the stadium two hours earlier.

Two weeks later, in Oxford, it really wasn't much better, when Ole Miss
jumped on Alabama 38-10. Oh, the Tide sliced the final to 43-28, but the
point had been made.

LSU led 27-0 before the dysfunctional Alabama offense could finally eke
out a mere field goal in the game's final minutes. Even laughable Hawaii
got up 37-21 before Alabama scored a touchdown in game's final seconds,
setting up the Tide's most familiar fourth-quarter formation last season
-- the onside kick.

Perhaps fans weren't overly concerned about some of these games since
they read too much into the Tide's games against Oklahoma, Arkansas and
Tennessee. Against the No. 1 Sooners, Alabama kicked a field goal with
1:32 left to cut a 10-point lead to seven, setting up the trusty onside
kick. Alabama had leads against the other two before succumbing in overtime.

In the glory days, Bryant used to encourage his players to raise their
fingers in the fourth quarter, because Alabama used to own the final
stanza. The Tide did that as well in 2003, going 7-2-4 in the fourth
quarter. This does not factor in the two overtimes that Alabama lost.

In all, Alabama was ferocious in the third and fourth quarters,
compiling a record of 8-4-1, which is perhaps what many fans remember
about the worst Alabama season in memory.

Alabama never quit, you might say. But what happened when the games were
still in doubt? Alabama was 5-6-2 in the first half of the 13 games and
often had to abandon the game plan the coaching staff worked on all week.

Most believe Alabama will improve on the 4-9 record this season, and
that optimism is likely indicated in the recent poll results. If Shula
can't live up to those expectations, his poll numbers will probably drop
precipitously and so will his chance for survival as head coach.

[RollTideFan] The Brothers Britt

 The Brothers Britt
*The Cullman Times*
/Published on: 08-22-2004/
Note: This is the cover story for The Cullman Times' annual Football
Fever special section

For the first time in six years, there will not be a member of the Britt
family on the football field for the Cullman Bearcats.

Cullman's loss is the Alabama Crimson Tide's gain and for the first time
ever all three of the Britt brothers will be playing on the same field
-- together.

"It's fun now that all three of us are on the same team," said Wesley
Britt about playing with his two younger brothers Taylor and Justin.
"We're best of friends."

"It really gives us something to look forward to," added Taylor, "and
it's great to have someone to lean on when you get down."

Sons of Tommy and Vera, the brothers were all standout athletes in
Cullman County and even at an early age the Britt boys showed they might
be something special.

"I knew they always worked hard and if they set their goals they would
achieve them," said Tommy. "I don't know if I ever realized they are
special athletes. I always thought of them as overachievers."

Since Wesley, 22, was five grades ahead of youngest brother Justin, 18,
growing up, the brothers never played for Cullman at the same time.
While never being on the same squad, the brothers enjoyed their
experience for the Bearcats just the same.

"We always knew we were playing for the town," Taylor, 21, said of
Cullman. "It was some good memories."

"It's a really neat thing the way the community shuts down," said
Wesley. "You get a little nostalgic every now and then."

"It's a whole different experience," said Justin about playing high
school football. "You grew up with those guys. They were your friends
since the second grade."

Cullman head coach Mark Britton, who coached Justin and was an assistant
coach when Wesley played, says the three brothers will be missed on the
football field.

"These guys were tremendous football players," said Britton, "and they
come from a tremendous family. It's been a long time since there hasn't
been a Britt on the football field here and they will be missed."

Now the Britt brothers have all finished stage one of their football
careers and will now play in the second phase for one season.

But it almost didn't work out that way. Whether it was Wesley's broken
leg last year, Taylor originally signing with University of Alabama in
Birmingham or Justin being recruited by nearly every single Southeastern
Conference school, the boys' hard work, decision-making and a little
fate have lead them to this point. Tommy even admitted that Wesley's
injury may have been the final piece to Justin committing to Alabama.

"When Wesley got hurt," said Tommy, "Justin decided he wanted to be with
his family. He probably would have chosen Alabama anyway, but I think
that injury could have played a part in his commitment to the team."

Now that they are all playing together, the brothers feel their
camaraderie will push them to even bigger or better things.

"I feel an accountability in my playing style with my brothers here,"
said Wesley. "I have to work hard and lead by example."

But watching his brothers push themselves to the limit as them vie for
starting positions on the Tide has inspired Wesley to do even more.

"I came in for practice one day this summer," Wesley told reporters at
the SEC media days last month, "and Justin was already there running up
and down the steps of the stadium without anyone else. It's amazing to
watch the type of work ethic and determination he has. Watching him work
so hard pushes me to work even harder."

Justin attributes his work ethic to his brothers' leadership on and off
the field and Britton says it is that characteristic that makes the boys
so special.

"I think through the many coaching changes and problems that team has
had," said Britton, "Wesley has been an ambassador for football on and
off the field. For that all Alabama fans, not just Cullman, will
remember him."

All their hard work will come to a head when the brothers run out of the
tunnel into Bryant-Denney stadium on Sept. 4. Tommy is not a very
emotional man but admitted that it may be tough to hold back tears when
his sons take the field.

"It's unbelievable," said Tommy about his sons playing for the Tide.
"I've seen fathers cry when their sons come out of the tunnel. It takes
a lot for me to cry, but it's going to be close. It will be a special
feeling though."

While this may be the only season that the brothers play together at
Alabama, they feel that sometime in the future, they could once again be
on the same team as they all look to move onto to the next stage of
their careers.

"This may not be the last year we play together," said Wesley.
"I think it would be neat if we all played on the same NFL team
together," added Taylor. "We all have those goals of playing
professionally."

For now, th

[RollTideFan] Means making a name for himself on the field

2004-08-21 Thread kurtrasmussen

By Pat Forde
Special to ESPN.com
Albert Means used to be all about big numbers, none of which did him any
good.

Big money. When is a high school defensive lineman worth $150,000? When
two of his Memphis high school coaches can allegedly strike a deal for
that much with an Alabama booster, in exchange for his signature on a
letter-of-intent. That, according to grand jury testimony, was the
tawdry price tag for the Crimson Tide to sign an unwitting Means, who
trusted the guidance of the coaches who sold him out. It was probably
the most shocking pay-for-play revelation in college football history.

Big scandal. Five years probation. Two-year bowl ban. Twenty-one lost
scholarships. Spurred by the stunning dollar figures surrounding Means,
that's how hard the NCAA slammed the Crimson Tide for major rules
violations. The ripple effects are still being felt, including a
Tennessee-Alabama feud now running so hot that it had Volunteers coach
Phil Fulmer skipping SEC Media Days and dodging subpoenas in Birmingham.

Big pounds. The world figured that the six-figure tackle would
immediately be the next Mean Joe Greene. Instead he was the next Fat
Albert, at one point weighing 370 pounds. A then-pachydermal Means was
out of shape and/or academically adrift in his one year at Alabama and,
after transferring, his first two years at Memphis. Which led to big
expectations unfulfilled.

There is less to Albert Means these days. And the downsizing has been a
blessing.

Today Means is a relatively trim 319 pounds. The fifth-year senior could
be poised for a breakout season at defensive tackle for the Memphis
Tigers, who last year went bowling for the first time since 1971.

(Poised to break out if his balky back will let him, that is. Means
injured the back in the weight room during the summer, and Thursday was
the first time he's participated in drills with the Tigers this camp -
and even that wasn't full contact. Means did some light agility work, as
coach Tommy West brings him back cautiously.)

Most importantly, Means is ready for his name to do something other than
live in infamy. He'd like it to resonate for reasons beyond being bought
and sold.

"That's behind me," Means said. "That's been over years ago."
It doesn't take exceptional intuition to see that Means would rather not
talk about those times. Who'd want to live their life as the poster boy,
however naïve, for cheating in college football? In fact, Memphis sports
information officials warned that he simply wouldn't submit to an
interview that focused on his recruiting controversy.

Which is fair enough. These days Means would rather talk about life as
the only married Tiger, about the giddy hopes for this Memphis season
and about a professional future that grows more promising with each lost
pound.

Means said he ran a 5.2-second 40-yard dash last April, when he weighed
335 pounds. Today he's optimistic that he could run 4.9. Combine that
kind of athletic ability with a productive senior season, and Means'
football future could be worth a whole lot more than Trezevant High
School coaches Lynn Lang and Milton Kirk told authorities they got for
shopping their star.

"I knew I had to lose weight to play like I wanted to and like I needed
to," Means said. "I've been working hard this summer, doing everything
right in the weight room. Now I'm feeling light on my feet and everything."

Memphis fans are feeling light-headed about the upcoming season. This is
a program that seemed perennially stuck in park until last season, when
the Tigers surprisingly won five straight games, nine overall and had
just their third bowl victory ever, beating North Texas 27-17 in the New
Orleans Bowl.

With everyone back on offense, led by school career passing leader Danny
Wimprine and All-America candidate running back DeAngelo Williams,
Memphis actually popped up in a few preseason Top 25s. Season-ticket
sales have topped 15,000, a 25 percent increase over last year's total.

"We can have a greater year than last year," Means said. "We just have
to play harder and smarter."

They have to be smarter off the field as well. An array of offseason
disciplinary problems has tempered some national expectations of the Tigers.

Means could help provide some of the missing maturity. He's been married
for two years to childhood friend Lavitta, also a Memphis student. That
gives him a different perspective than his teammates'.

"They see me as a more mature person, which I am," Means said. "I don't
go out all night or anything. I go home."

Getting married young never seemed like a big issue to Means. It simply
was time.

"There wasn't no use in playing little kiddie games," he said. "It was
time to grow up, so I did. You can't be a kid once you get out in the
world."

If any college football player had reason to grow up early - and grow up
jaded -it's Al

MORNING PRACTICE UPDATE: Injuries becoming daily occurrence for Crimson Tide: Carter
back in a cast; Britt, Bates hurt

By Craig S. Wysock
Special to TideSports.com
August 19, 2004

TUSCALOOSA | Wide receiver Antonio Carter, who has yet to practice this fall, was
wearing a soft cast on his injured right leg at the University of Alabama’s Thursday
practice.

PLUS: Photos from Thursday's practice

“We evaluated Antonio again last night,” Tide coach Mike Shula said. “His leg, where
it was injured, seems OK, but he has a pulled muscle in the leg. We wanted to take
some of the stress off it, so he will wear the boot [soft cast] for the next 10 days
or so, and then we’ll see where we are.”

Carter has not played since the regular-season finale in 2001. He was granted a sixth
year of eligibility for this season by the NCAA, but has been unable to participate in
the Tide’s early practice sessions.

Thursday morning also saw the defensive line add to the injured list, as Todd Bates
and Justin Britt both had to cut practice short due to minor shoulder injuries.

Bates said he tweaked the stinger he sustained in the Tide’s scrimmage earlier in the
week, but it wasn’t anything serious.

“I probably won’t be doing inside drills for a few days,” Bates said. “I don’t want to
turn a minor problem into something serious.”

Shula said Britt was dealing with a bruised shoulder and got some time off to give it
a rest, but pointed out that he expected him back soon.

“I popped it out a few days ago and it was starting to wear on me out there today,”
Britt said. “But I’ll be ready for the scrimmage on Saturday.”

Ramzee Robinson ready for starting role
After an impressive spring, Ramzee Robinson was one of the two starting cornerbacks
(along with Anthony Madison) on the depth chart. So far this fall, his play has been
consistent and nothing has changed.

The Huntsville native has been doing an excellent job of anticipating routes and
breaking up plays all camp. He’s also becoming one of the leaders of the secondary.

“There’s not really one leader on this team. Each day it seems like there’s a new guy
pushing the team to get better,” Robinson said. “It’s hard work out here, training to
play tired, and we’re trying to bring the new guys along as we do it.”

There’s also a very noticeable camaraderie amongst the secondary and “Bino” seems to
always be in the mix. Whether it’s celebrating a big play or helping one of his
teammates shake off a mistake, Robinson makes it a point to be one of the first guys
there.

“It takes a special player to play defensive back. I think it’s the toughest position
in football,” Robinson said. “But we’re always there for each other regardless. It
doesn’t matter.”

Eating Contest Turns Into Brawl Outside 2News Studios

Aug 18, 2004 5:20 pm US/Mountain

A food eating contest turns ugly live on TV. It went from eating, to throwing food, to
throwing fists. Unfortunately it happened right outside the 2News Main Street Studios.

It was supposed to be a fun eating contest between rival high school football players.
It started out as an event with two football teams trying to beat each other in a
Subway food eating contest with cheerleaders from both schools on the sidelines.

Then suddenly things got really ugly when the rules changed to an eating free for all.

"Now we got a water fight, now we got a food fight, now we got a real fight,
unbelievable let's go back inside. This is out of control," said 2News sports anchor
David James who was covering the event live on 2News at Noon.

It was a fight on live TV that took everyone by surprise including all of us here at
2News.

"We're not happy with what happened outside on the plaza”, said KUTV News Director
Steve Charlier.

The event was organized by a public relations firm called the Summit Group which
represents Subway.

“They approached us here at 2News to air the contest and we agreed to broadcast it,”
Charlier said. "We chose to televise it for positive reasons to show two rival
football teams having fun building up to a big weekend."

After it was all over school administrators from Hunter agreed to come into an office
to view the tape. They were not happy.

"It's a sad thing because we came here to have a little fun and now it turns out to
affect both schools in a negative way," said Devon Hartley Asst. Principal at Hunter
High School.

Bingham High administrators are not commenting and Jordan School District says it will
not comment because they say Bingham administrators were not aware of the event and it
was not school sanctioned.

Hunter administrators say there could be possible suspensions and other disciplinary
action against those involved in the fight.

If there are suspensions those football players may not play in Friday night’s big
rivalry opener.

Both schools are still investigating the incident.

Bingham’s head football coach was there when the fight broke out. Hunter’s coach was
not at the eating contest.

The fight broke up within seconds. After 2News cut away we called police and
paramedics.

Other than a few bruises no one was seriously injured.

[RollTideFan] "This is depressing."

2004-08-19 Thread kurtrasmussen
http://www.rammerjammeryellowhammer.com/weblog/2004/08/this_is_depress_1.html

This is depressing.

The Birmingham News reports(sorry: r/r) that the City of Birmingham has declared that
the upper deck at Legion Field is structurally unsound, and cannot handle spectators.
The 72,000 seats in the main stadium structure are unaffected, the city reports,
though something tells me spectators might be more than a wee bit nervous about
sitting under the condemned upper deck. The finding also means that last year's season
opener was likely Alabama's last game in Legion Field (I was there but didn't think to
pay my last respects) since the upper deck closure means that Legion Field no longer
has enough seats to accommodate the Tide, which had tentative plans for as many as
three more games at the stadium.

For someone who grew up watching Alabama play in Birmingham, this is beyond
depressing. I saw Bear Bryant win his 315th at Legion Field, and great games with
Notre Dame, USC, Penn State, Tennessee and LSU, and of course, many an Iron Bowl, back
in the days when the tickets were split 50/50 between the red and the blue. I actually
have a piece of astroturf from Legion Field, sold in swatches when it was taken up and
replaced with grass. It's also a bummer because Legion Field's steep design made it
about three times as loud as Bryant Denny's open bowl shape. And the thundering of
pounding feet in the upper deck truly made for an anxious, exciting, frenetic
atmosphere at college football games. Legion Field makes a couple of appearances in
RJYH ... "a battleship gray structure atop a cross-hatch of I-beams -- in a steel town
like Birmingham, no one would've thought to slap a facade on something so beautiful as
a girder -- that hovers gloomily over the neighborhood like a summer thunderhead..."
and in the book, it's the site of a soul-wrenching last second loss, and an ensuing
mini-riot in the student section.

At any rate, I sincerely hope that if the City of Birmingham doesn't have the will or
the money to properly renovate the stadium, that they'll call in a demolition team
subito and put that noble place out of its misery, rather than letting it fall apart
one lug-nut at a time. We should have a party and say a collective, hearty goodbye.
RIP Legion Field.

[RollTideFan] Croyle shines in Tide's scrimmage

2004-08-16 Thread kurtrasmussen

*Croyle shines in Tide's scrimmage*
*By Craig S. Wysock*
August 16, 2004
Several hundred fans came to Bryant-Denny Stadium on Monday afternoon to
find out for themselves if the rumors were true.

And as the masses filed out, everyone appeared content with the
knowledge they gained.

In a nutshell, Brodie Croyle is healthy and his untested receiving corps
is more than capable of passing the first “exam” of the season.

“I thought Brodie was pretty sharp today,” head coach Mike Shula said.
“He’s much further along than this time last year.

“And all those young [receivers] did a good job. We’re going to try and
put them in as many game-type situations as we can because we’re going
to have to count on them down the road.”

Croyle completed 15 of his first 19 passes for 257 yards and three
touchdowns. He finished the day 19-for-26 with five scores and 281
yards, mainly because the second half concentrated on red zone and
goal-line situations.

While Croyle’s performance was good news for the Crimson Tide, the fact
that he spread the wealth to a myriad of receivers gave coaches and fans
alike an idea of what can be expected from the passing attack.

Tyrone Prothro, Matt Caddell and D.J. Hall all had four receptions (each
with at least one of the “deep” variety). Prothro gained 75 yards and
picked up a touchdown, while Caddell outdid his teammate by one,
finishing with 76 yards. He also crossed the goal line once.

Hall led all receivers with 80 yards though. The freshman also scored
two touchdowns to lead the unit.

“When they said I could come in here and have a good chance to get the
ball, I didn’t think they meant like that,” Hall said. “All we had to do
was look up and the ball was there. Brodie’s going to get the ball to us.”

It might have seemed that the scrimmage was pass-heavy, but the final
totals showed that there were 41 running plays and 40 passing plays.

Huntsville native Kenneth Darby led all rushers with 25 yards and a
touchdown on six attempts. Tim Castille also impressed, scoring on three
straight goal-line efforts.

On defense, DeMeco Ryans and Terrence Jones each had six tackles and
tied for the team lead.

Practice will continue tomorrow with two sessions scheduled. The first
will begin at 8:45 a.m. and the second should get underway by 7:45 p.m.

[RollTideFan] Football: Flowing With the 'Tide'

2004-08-15 Thread kurtrasmussen
Football: Flowing With the 'Tide'
Newsweek

Aug. 23 issue - Pompoms, cheerleaders, tailgating and oversize Styrofoam hands—yes,
college-football season is already upon us. Before the first game kicks off next
Saturday, diehard fans—or anyone who finds their antics entertaining, for that
matter—should peruse Warren St. John's ode to fandom, "Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer."
In 1999 St. John purchased a used 1978 Allegro motor home and hit the road with the
caravan of University of Alabama fans following their beloved Crimson Tide across the
South. "I wanted to understand why we were all so crazy about the sport," he says.

During the four-month road trip detailed in the book, St. John encounters a colorful
group of devout 'Bama supporters whose lives revolve around the pigskin. John Ed
Belvin explains the science of ticket scalping—and bags $25,000 during a game against
Tennessee. Freeman and Betty Reese skip their daughter's wedding because it coincides
with a football game. And although Don Cole's hospital threatens to remove his name
from an organ waiting list should he travel more than two hours from Nashville, Cole
attends every game of the season, only one of which is within those boundaries. "If I
can't go to Alabama football games what's the point in living?" he asks.

St. John, who left his job as a reporter for The New York Times for one year to pursue
the "Rammer Jammer" project, shares his own experiences, too. "I became a completely
different sort of fan once I started living in an RV in a stadium parking lot with
hundreds of other fans," he recalls. "I completely lost perspective on the world
outside of football." Sometimes, that's just what it takes to be a real fan.

The City of Huntsville has started work on an Intelligent Transportation

[RollTideFan] 'Intimidator' sparked his teammates

'Intimidator' sparked his teammates
*By Lee Goddard Caller-Times*
*August 14, 2004*
As the Dallas Cowboys stumbled through the first few seasons of
existence, the team lacked someone to set the tone on defense, someone a
bit nasty to intimidate opposing offenses.

In the 1963 draft, that intimidator arrived wrapped in a 6-foot-1,
215-pound package, and his personality rubbed off on the defense.

A first-round pick from Alabama, Lee Roy Jordan was the defensive leader
the Cowboys craved. Called "the finest player I ever coached" by Bear
Bryant, Caller-Times voters concurred, as a reader poll named Jordan the
finest middle linebacker in Dallas history.

Most defensive players take pride in their ability to hit. But when
Jordan joined the Cowboys, his ability to lay out opponents sparked
teammates. [...]

[RollTideFan] from Bill Curry (0-0) to Bill Curry (0-1)

New coaches are perfect, for now
By Bill Curry
Special to ESPN.com

Zero and zero ... (0-0) ... bliss.

Nobody ever says much about it, but it sure is fun. Anyone who has ever coached in the
cauldron of serious sport (which seems to begin at Little League these days) can
testify to it. If one of us coaches should find a cure for cancer, settle the Middle
East crisis, or be canonized by the church, we know still that upon our death none of
those accomplishments will grace the first paragraph of our obituaries. Oh no, first
there will be something else, something that will be indelibly imprinted on the public
consciousness forever. Come on, you know full well what it is.

Yes, the parentheses! And within the accusatory little brackets, our coaching record,
how we did in the most important thing in the history of the world. (DID HE WIN! OR
LOSE?) Unless your name is Paterno or Bowden (uh, Bobby) you find yourself reliving
all those wins that might have been. If only...

But the zero and zero days are so cool, so welcoming, and so wonderful one can
actually enjoy them. Ask George O'Leary or Mike Price. It is redemption on the run and
can be intoxicating. The first year head football coach is uniquely vulnerable. He has
a long, long offseason, unless his name is Mike Shula.

Even if one is a veteran, the trap is seductive. The new coach, already a confident
cuss, thinks all the love is caused by his personal charm and awesome potential. He
thinks that marginal recruiting class really wowed the alums, and that the model for
the new stadium is enough to increase season ticket sales. He thinks the former regime
loaded up the schedule for all the right reasons, and goes about proclaiming, "We will
probably win a few we shouldn't." This is extremely dangerous because the more he says
such stuff, the more he believes it. (Writer's note: my first year at Georgia Tech our
out-of-conference schedule was Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, Notre Dame and
Georgia.)

There is one reason folks love the (0-0) coach, only one. There are no losses. Folks
stay happy as long as there are no losses. Ask Terry Bowden.

The wealthy egocentric alumni froth at the mouth to get close to the new coach. On one
occasion I was told, "You are harder to reach than the president of the United States!
I want you to stay in our million dollar house on the beach this summer!" I indicated
that I would be somewhat easier for him to reach in the future.

Three years later, when the record was not zero and zero, after many happy hours on
the beach for the Currys, he marched into my office again. He announced, "I just left
the athletic director's office, where I demanded that you be fired!" I asked the
important question, "I guess the beach house is out of the question this summer?"

But back in the last hours of my zero and zero days, I walked onto Legion Field in
Birmingham, Alabama where our Georgia Tech team was to play our first game against No.
1 Alabama and their legendary coach, Bear Bryant. I had played for him in the Coaches'
All-America game and he had been wonderful to me ever since.

As I stood in the 120 degree heat on the artificial surface during stretching, I could
not for the life of me locate Coach Bryant. I knew there was some kind of hand shaking
ritual with head coaches, but was not sure how to go about it. Before, he had always
assumed his cross-legged lean onto the home team goal post, wearing his hound's tooth
hat. But he was nowhere to be found.

At length I got distracted but then I felt more than saw the phalanx of photographers
moving in my direction at a dirge-like pace. In the middle towered Coach Bryant,
wearing a funny little white hat. He approached, grabbed me by the hand, and growled,
"Hell son, can't you say hello to a fellow when you visit his place?" I said, "I could
not find you, and besides, you have on the wrong hat."

He mumbled something about the other one being too hot, and then with surprising
quickness grabbed my sansabelt slacks, began to affectionately yank me around, and
insisted, "Coach Dodd put you up to that stuff about not finding me, didn't he?"

Here I was, just prior to our very first game, about to suffer "wardrobe malfunction"
in front of seventy thousand people. And this was not Justin Timberlake who had ahold
of my pants.

I managed to keep my britches on but lost the game. It was Alabama 26, Georgia Tech 3
... The Coach was kind to us. I had gone from Bill Curry (0-0) to Bill Curry (0-1),
and life was never quite the same again.

[RollTideFan] A really tough Neighbors-hood

A really tough Neighbors-hood
'Bama tackle found success
COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME ENSHRINEMENT 2004
By STEVE WILTFONG
Tribune Staff Writer
Billy Neighbors was an anchor of the Alabama offensive and defensive lines.
Photo provided
Billy Neighbors "lived, dreamed and worked football" his first 2 1/2
years at the University of Alabama.

He had no choice.
It was 1958 and Alabama had just been through three terrible seasons
under nice guy coach J.B. Whitworth. In a drastic change of leadership,
the university fired Whitworth and hired 44-year old Paul Bryant.

Neighbors was already committed to play for the Tide before Bryant was
hired. That fall, Neighbors, a two-way tackle, and 107 other players
arrived on campus for their freshman year.

"I never heard of him before," Neighbors said of Bryant. "It didn't take
long to find out who he was."

Football was never so hard.
Neighbors' father passed away when he was 6. He remembers listening to
stories his dad would tell about Alabama football, and he dreamed of
playing for the Crimson Tide.

Those dreams became a nightmare under Bryant.
"Coach Bryant was rough as the devil when he first got there," Neighbors
said. "He worked us unmercifully."

Neighbors was ready to quit early into his freshman year.
"I just didn't have anywhere to go," Neighbors said. "That's what my
momma told me. I called her and told her I was coming home, and she said
there is nothing here. You better stay there."

Neighbors was just one of nine guys who stuck it out in the class of 1961.
Freshman weren't the only guys who couldn't hack it. The day Neighbors
arrived on campus, his brother, a senior, quit. Bryant asked him to lose
two pounds and he refused.

Neighbors' senior year, Alabama won the first of six national
championships under Bryant. That season Neighbors was an
all-Southeastern Conference and consensus All-America selection. He was
named the top lineman in the SEC, as well as most valuable player of the
Senior Bowl.

Those credentials solidified his spot in the College Football Hall of Fame.
"I never thought (earning a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame)
would happen to me," said Neighbors, who went on to play eight seasons
in the NFL. "I was lucky I played on a great football team at Alabama. I
played with some great players, and played for a great coach."

"He was a quiet guy but a good, terrific player," teammate and 1983 Hall
of Fame inductee Lee Roy Jordan said. "He was one of the main reasons we
won a national championship in 1961."

Neighbors can only recall two conversations with Bryant during his four
years at Alabama. Once for skipping class and another for a bad game
against Tulane.

"He chewed my (butt) out," Neighbors explained. "I thought I played well.
"I was so afraid of coach Bryant. He never said anything to me. He never
got on me. Every time I saw him coming, I stayed out of his way."

October 15, 1960 was the day Alabama last lost a game in which Neighbors
played. The Crimson Tide were beaten by host Tennessee, 20-7.

"That was the coaches' fault," Neighbors said. "Bryant admitted that. He
chewed us out first, then the coaches, then himself."

Alabama was 8-1-2 that year, and 11-0 the following campaign.
In the middle of the 1960 season, Bryant stopped working the team so hard.
"We got good and I guess he saw that," Neighbors said. "We stopped doing
drills and didn't scrimmage more than 10 minutes."

There was still running to stay in shape. Other than that, the team
walked through new plays without pads and watched film.

During the national title year, Neighbors and the Alabama defense
allowed just 25 points the entire season. The Tide posted six shutouts.

"It was magic," Neighbors said. "We knew we were going to win because we
knew they couldn't score on us."

Alabama played Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl that year. A lot of the guys
on the team came down with the flu that week.

"Probably the reason why we won was because of Billy Neighbors play,"
Jordan said. "It was just one of those deals that he took on himself. He
hadn't been sick and that he could do some extra things."

In a 10-3 win, Neighbors and the defense kept Arkansas on its own side
of the 50 in the first half.

In the summertime, Neighbors and Jordan, who was one class younger,
worked in a paper mill together for extra money. The two are still good
friends.

Neighbors now lives in Huntsville, Ala., with his wife. He is in his
37th year as a financial advisor at Wachovia Securities.

Lemme try again.

A bedlam blunder has OSU fans outraged.

On the side of the school's new stadium, written in the brick, is the symbol of their
biggest rival - the letters O and U.

The bricks on the stadium have been up for quite a while. But no one noticed the
blunder until this week. And when they did, the news spread faster than a football
player sprinting for a touchdown.

Under renovation for 10 months now, the new multi-million dollar Boone Pickens stadium
is the blood, sweat and tears of the Cowboys. And with the first game of the season
less than a month away, construction workers are putting on the finishing touches.
But, there's already a major flaw that needs fixing.

"Not even done yet and someone's already messed it up," said one OSU fan.

"I can't believe somebody would do that," said another. "To be honest with you, our
first thought was this was a bricklayer that couldn't spell."

But what the bricks spell out is no laughing matter to the Cowboys and their fans.
Embedded in the concrete is the mark of their biggest rival. [...]

[RollTideFan] TV station to air UA sporting events

TV station to air UA sporting events

By Adam Jones
Staff Writer
August 10, 2004

Email this story.

TUSCALOOSA | There will be more University of Alabama athletic events on television
this year because of an agreement between a resurrected cable network and the
university.

In Tuscaloosa, the new programming will be available on UA-owned WVUA.

The Alabama Cable Network will rebroadcast all Crimson Tide football games and offer
more live games of other sports than has been available, said ACN founder Don Early at
a news conference on campus Monday.

“We’ll only tape delay what we must because of contract," Early said. “We’ll put on so
many live events. It’s never been done before."

The now defunct College Sports Southeast, or CSSE, bought ACN from Early in 1998.
Before the buyout, Early’s crews taped games, drove the tapes to Birmingham and then
broadcasted them.

Early bought back the rights to ACN and his station, WOTM TV-19 in Birmingham, and has
partnered with WVUA-7 in Tuscaloosa so a game can be sent from Tuscaloosa to ACN’s
headquarters in Birmingham without tape delay, Early said.

ACN can’t broadcast live football games because of contract provisions, but Early said
ACN would probably show about 40 live games, including men and women’s basketball,
baseball, softball and gymnastics.

Crimson Tide Sports Marketing, which owns the rights to Alabama athletic events, will
also partner with ACN by providing some on-air talent and letting coach’s shows air on
the network.

In the Tuscaloosa area, the 125,000 homes with access to WVUA-7 will be able to
receive ACN. WOTM TV-19, which reaches 205,000 homes in the Birmingham area, will also
play all of ACN’s programs.

Statewide, six other stations have agreed to air some ACN programming, meaning about
870,000 homes could receive Crimson Tide athletic events this year.

“We want the kid who’s growing up in Dothan to watch Alabama and learn about it
through ACN, and we want him to come to school here," said Butch Henry, executive
producer of the Crimson Tide Network.

Henry said Crimson Tide Sports Marketing wanted more Alabama events on television than
the regional Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast can offer.

“We need people to know that when they turn on the TV, there’s a station that’s
primarily Crimson Tide," he said.

Using students and interns from the College of Communication and Information Sciences,
UA will also attempt to air non-sports events on ACN, said Culpepper Clark, the dean
of the college.

“This partnership will open an important door to the state of Alabama for the
University of Alabama," UA President Robert Witt said.

Possible events for broadcast other than sporting events could include dance and
theater performances, Clark said.

Up From Segregation: Coming Full Circle
By Earl Tilford (06/06/2003)

The United States Supreme Court soon will deal with whether or not the University of
Michigan can use race as a determinant in admissions. I thought the courts already
settled this in the 1960s. At least that’s the way it seemed to me at the University
of Alabama in June 1963 when the Justice Department bypassed Gov. George Wallace’s
“stand in the schoolhouse door” to desegregate my alma mater.

Perhaps things have come full circle.

In the spring of 1967, a few years after the University was desegregated, when the
fraternity boys partying in the apartment beneath mine rocked way past the midnight
hour, I took to stomping on the floor. Eventually, a pair of quite drunk, sloppily
apologetic brothers, accoutered in Confederate army uniforms, negotiated the stairs up
to my place. They explained it was “Old South Week,” a hallowed tradition in the Kappa
Alpha fraternity and they apologized if their “commitment to our past” interfered with
my studying. “But, since Robert E. Lee himself founded Kappa Alpha, any real
Southerner would want to celebrate.” Didn’t I understand?

With final exams approaching I needed to salvage what study time I could from the wee
hours of Friday morning. Nevertheless, not wanting to seem impolite, I quickly devised
a strategy to get rid of my gray-clad guests.

“I was talking to a buddy of mine who’s a KA at Vanderbilt,” I fibbed, “and he told me
they just pledged a Negro.” Looks of drunken astonishment filled their flushed faces.
Resembling two shell-shocked survivors of Pickett’s Charge, they beat a stumbling
retreat downstairs to phone the KA house in Nashville and left me to my studying.

Old South Week notwithstanding, by 1967, the University of Alabama was well on its way
to becoming a racially integrated institution -- an island of liberalism in a sea of
conservatism. Fast forward to the mid-1990s.

Shortly after my son enrolled at one of Pennsylvania’s directional state universities,
my family and I attended “Parents’ Weekend.” In addition to meeting professors and
having lunch in the student cafeteria, the package included free football tickets.
Accordingly, my son and I went to the student union building to get ours.

While standing in line I noticed a nearby television room. The “NCAA Game of the Week”
was on, featuring the Alabama Crimson Tide. I wandered into the room and sat down.
Faster than you can say “Roll Tide,” my son was at the door, “Dad, I got to talk to
you!” “In a minute,” I protested, “Bama’s about to score.” “No, Dad! I got to speak to
you now!” Given the urgency in his voice, I reluctantly withdrew.

Under his breath, with furtive looks to the side as if Big Brother might be listening,
he informed me I couldn’t watch the game in that room because “it’s the
African-American TV lounge.” I was astounded, “You mean only black students can watch
TV in there?” He assured me that was the case. “Well,” I inquired, “where’s the white
students’ TV lounge?” I added that at state colleges and universities segregation had
been illegal for nearly a half century.

At that point, a guy with a beard and hair to his shoulders, who I took to be a
professor, overheard my protestations. He informed me I was displaying “a great deal
of insensitivity” toward university policies on multi-culturalism and diversity. Lest
my son end up in a sensitivity re-education class, I mollified the professor with,
“Yeah, I think segregation and racism suck.”

In June 1963, the administration, faculty, students, Forrest Gump and I -- with help
from Bobby Kennedy and the Justice Department -- moved the University of Alabama into
the 20th century, aligning it with the forces of equal opportunity and social justice.

In the autumn of 1996, on a campus in Pennsylvania, it seemed as if segregation had
come full circle.

I wondered if the murder of civil rights workers during the Mississippi Summer of
1964, the Selma-to-Montgomery March the following spring and Martin Luther King’s
message about judging people based on the content of their character rather than skin
color meant anything after all.

Segregation, it seems, like notions of beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Once again, it also is in the chambers of the Supreme Court.

When BAMA announced that they were rescheduling Penn State with T3H M1GHT AGGEEZ from
Utah State, I got pissed off. I was wanting BAMA to play a tough OOC schedule. I was
hoping USU would kick their ass, take home the guaranteed payout and cash the damn
