[Rails] Ruby code on Chef as a ruby_block not working
Hi Ruby hackers, I have very limited knowledge of the Ruby programming language, however, I need to implement on Chef (check-solo) something similar to augeas (which works with Puppet, but here I need a solution for Chef). I got the example code below but it's not working and I am now for a few days trying to figure out what is wrong. Basically I need to be able to select specific strings in a text file and modify these values. I could use sed but perhaps I can do it in a more elegant way using the ruby_block from Chef. Please let me know what can be possibly wrong with the code below. Why is my /etc/hosts not being updated with new values? Always when I re-run chef-solo, I get the following error: *NoMethodError** **-** **undefined method `chef' for Chef::Resource::RubyBlock* Thanks for your help. Follows my *default.rb* file: Code: ruby_block edit etc hosts do block do rc = Chef::Util::FileEdit.new(/etc/hosts) rc.search_file_replace_line( /^127\.0\.0\.1 localhost$/, 127.0.0.1 #{new_fqdn} #{new_hostname} localhost ) rc.write_file end end -- Rodrigo de Campos Unix System Administrator -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Ruby on Rails: Talk group. Re: [Rails] Ruby code on Chef as a ruby_block not working
You should really ask about this in a chef support area, as it is something very specific to chef. As it is, you cannot define local functions in chef recipes, they have to be defined in libraries and called from such. Stackoverflow is really your best bet for help on chef things, or the #chef channel on irc.freenode.net On Nov 7, 2013, at 8:29 AM, Rodrigo de Campos r...@netzmarkt.de wrote: Hi Ruby hackers, I have very limited knowledge of the Ruby programming language, however, I need to implement on Chef (check-solo) something similar to augeas (which works with Puppet, but here I need a solution for Chef). [Rails] Re: can anyone please suggest me from where I need to start learning ruby on rails..??
My suggestions: 1. Learn object-oriented programming in Python. Python is easier to install, learn, and read than Ruby, and it paved the way to learning Ruby. 2. Learn Ruby before learning Rails. (tryruby.org provides a good introduction.) I know that the majority of other Rubyists will back me up on this. Not knowing Ruby first makes Rails seem too much like mysterious, unexplainable black magic. Having a passing familiarity with Ruby makes Rails look somewhat less alien. 3. Go through the Rails for Zombies tutorial at http://railsforzombies.org/ . It gives you a good introduction to what Ruby on Rails can do, and it doesn't require installing Ruby on Rails. 4. Go through railstutorial.org . At least get through the first 7 chapters. 5. Start a good project that makes use of Ruby on Rails. For me, these projects were Bargain Stock Funds (http://www.bargainstockfunds.com) and Doppler Value Investing (http://www.dopplervalueinvesting.com). I just don't get that engaged from merely going through tutorials. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Ruby on Rails: Talk group. Is there something simple I am overlooking? Thanks, RVic. delim = 240.chr if userSelected.blank? userSelected = userSending end s=row.to_s+delim+userSending+delim+userSelected+delim+message+delim+notes If you’re using 240.chr as a delimiter, what difference does it make what the Glyph looks like? The other side should just split on 240.chr. You need to be looking at the binary data stream to see what is being sent/received. [Rails] How do I use Chef to manage database parameters?
As you know, the correct database name, username, and password in config/database.yml are needed for a Rails site to work. I understand that the elegant way to provide these parameters is to use the Chef tool. However, I can't figure out how to do this. I'll explain the solution I'm using instead: 1. I have an Rails site called Bargain Stock Funds (http://www.bargainstockfunds.com). The source code is at https://github.com/jhsu802701/bsf . 2. The config directory of my site's source code has a database.yml.template file instead of a database.yml file. The database name is stored in the settings/db_name.txt file. The config/update.rb file copies the config/database.yml.template file to config/database.yml and then uses my bsf_scrape Ruby gem to provide the database name, username, and password. 3. The source code of my bsf_scrape gem is at https://github.com/jhsu802701/bsf_scrape . This uses my database_params Ruby gem (https://github.com/jhsu802701/database_params) to record the database name and read the database name, username, and password. In the development environment, the database username is the same as the UNIX system username, and there is no password. In the production environment, the database username and password are stored in files outside the source code. I realize that many of you probably consider my database management solution to be crude. (Believe it or not, it was even cruder without the use of my database_params and string_in_file Ruby gems.) However, the documentation for Chef is so complicated, the the examples I've read sound like they're for much more complicated setups than what I have. Can someone shed some light on how I can transition my app to use Chef? I can't do away with something crude that works until I have a viable replacement. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Ruby on Rails: Talk group.
