Regarding secrets, I want to use kubernetes's secret management.
However, I've not yet set that up in a way that I'm happy with, so for
now we may have to just mount a directory with secrets in it.

I haven't thought about network yet.

Sorry if it is was lost in the noise, but there is also a very nice
brand new clean machine, read to run Docker images, at UW.   (48
cores, 256GB RAM, brand new OS install.)  It should work well for this
purpose.  Harald is looking into runnings files.sagemath.org on it
now.

I don't think we need any of that, a normal CDN is fine, too. Problem
with using a commercial one is that the traffic is so expensive.

Anyhow, it's probably better to use some free cloud - I'm in fact at
the moment in Krakow, attending a series of workshops
http://www.digitalinfrastructures.eu/
It appears that they (e.g. egi.eu) have spare capacity for hosting and
running things...

We just have to ask (via ODK).

I've done what I can and right now

   - files.sagemath.org
   - rsync.sagemath.org

seem to respond to pings.  And

   - build.sagemath.org doesn't.

I have a brand new  machine at UW running Ubuntu 16.04, with many
cores and tons of RAM.   Please

SOMEBODY VOLUNTEER TO move files.sagemath.org, rsync.sagemath, and
build.sagemath.org to run as **Docker containers** on this new
machine.

** I will definitely power off everything except this one new machine
one week from now.  **

Modulo having [the] keys on the machine you're currently trying to fetch
from.  Also, then anybody using git.sagemath.org will need a trac
account.  Not sure if the GitHub version is always up-to-date, including
betas.

But that's new.  E.g. 'git fetch'  with git://{git,trac}...' worked for
me not that long ago.  (I'm having other issues atm though.)


Orthogonal to that, I can no longer access files.sagemath.org etc.;
looks as if a bunch of IPs would get blocked since about Saturday (or
perhaps Friday), ping (ICMP) in contrast worked IIRC, doesn't either atm.

(And I did get timeouts for http[s]://trac.sagemath.org yesterday as
well, which is yet another issue but others apparently had as well.  To
that time, there ICMP definitely worked.)

Actually, disabling anonymous git:// would perhaps help to reduce server 
load, without 
real  functionality problems for development...

Oh right, this is exactly the problem. The port for git protocol is blocked
(as most other ports on GCE hosts) so one has to use ssh
(i.e. git@... syntax rather than git://... syntax)

Sorry for forgetting about it; this really has to be documented properly.

?

or maybe this:

and see if that works.

That's an indication that I don't know what I am doing, but the command
actually fails on a git fetch, and it also failed earlier on a different

 It's yet again the situation where so many git operations are being 
 performed that none of them finish, things time out, and it tries them 
 all again at once, or something.  This work needs to be rewritten to 
 use a lock or queue or something...  or just make the entire machine 
 way more powerful (spend more money). 

 I'm now going to try to do a lot of aggressive killing of git 
 processes, restarting of apache, etc.

Make sure you have the latest `git trac` installed.

There is no branch on #21596, thus nothing to checkout.
In this case `git trac` attempts to create a new branch on a server in some 
way, which fails
for some reason.

In plain git, you would want to push your local branch to the trac server; 
this works for me.
