The giac package claims to be giac-1.6.0.47p3. I am not familiar with the
“giac” universe, but this only seems to happen on my macOS 10.14 laptop.

FWIW, this same version of giac on this system has been showing the same
failure since “sage-9.4”. Maybe something in the toolchain I have?

Built on two systems (10.14.6 - 2017 MBP, Quad-core Core -7; 10.15.7 - 2019
8-core Core i9).

10.15.7: no problems with build, all tests (‘ptestlong’) passed!

10.14.6: no problems with build, testing (‘ptestlong’) yielded the usual
failure, which seems permanent.
Log file snippet attached.

Built, as usual, on two systems (10.14.6, 2017 MBP, 4-core Core i7; 10.15.7,
2019 MBP, 8-core Core i9).

No problems with the builds. Testing (‘ptestlong’) yielded the following
problems:

10.14.6: two failures, the usual (for this system)
symbolic/integration/external.py; and the recently reported failure of
modular/overconvergent/hecke_series.py

10.15.7: one failures, the recently reported failure of
modular/overconvergent/hecke_series.py

Logs available if needed.

Built from fresh clone of the develop branch on two systems without problems:

macOS 10.11.6 (Quad-core Vore i7 mid-2015 MBP): testing (‘ptestlong’) with all
tests passing.

macOS 10.13.6 (Quad-core Vore i7 2017 MBP): testing (‘ptestlong’) with three
issues:

sage -t --long --warn-long 241.7 src/sage/combinat/designs/ext_rep.py # Killed
due to abort
sage -t --long --warn-long 241.7 src/sage/doctest/external.py # Killed due to
abort
sage -t --long --warn-long 241.7 src/sage/interfaces/singular.py # 1 doctest
failed

When run singly, the first two persisted, the last succeeded. Attaching log of
the three singleton tests. FWIW, I sometimes get a popup alert to ignore
faults or report. Sometimes when I do, clicking gives me a window with more
information, and in the case of the two latter crashes, there was a comment to
the effect that the crash occurred (in python 2.7) between fork and pre-exec,
As I said, I sometimes get these, but trying to verify the exact wording, I
only got the alert; clicking report probably sent the report to Apple,
untouched.

Anyone else seen this? I can’t be sure this is Sage, because my shiny new 2017
MBP is behaving psychotically. A lot of performance problems and UI lockups.

Built on two macOS platforms: 10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP) and 10.13.6 (2017 MBP).

On 10.11.6, no other problems with the build and all tests (‘ptestlong’) passed.

Numerous occurrences of build failures (presumably #18438?) on both platforms.
As always for this, restarting the build was successful, up to the next
failure. Eventually (3-4 attempts each) the builds completed.

On 10.13.6, no other problems with the build; testing (‘ptestlong’) had two
failures (both #25921?):
sage -t --long src/sage/combinat/designs/ext_rep.py # Killed due to abort
sage -t --long src/sage/doctest/external.py # Killed due to abort

Both failures recur when run singly.

Built from a fresh clone of the develop branch on two systems:

macOS 10.13.6 (iMac Pro, Xeon): built w/o problems, but testing (‘ptestlong’)
yielded three failures:

sage -t --long --warn-long 87.5 src/sage/libs/singular/polynomial.pyx # 1
doctest failed
sage -t --long --warn-long 87.5 src/sage/doctest/external.py # Killed due to
abort
sage -t --long --warn-long 87.5 src/sage/combinat/designs/ext_rep.py # Killed
due to abort

Failures persisted when run stand-alone. Crash logs, etc., available on
request.

macOS 10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core Core i7): build did not even get started
- bootstrap failed as reported earlier.
Anyone know why bootstrap fails here but not on 10.13? I’ve cloned the branch
several times, with no change (someone mentioned something about insanity
here…).

Interesting. I just went through this, to download the 8.4.rc1 and 8.3 dmg’s
for macOS (downloaded sequentially).

Both downloads quit at the same point (1.09 GB). I restarted the downloads,
which then completed w/o problems. The MD5 checksums listed on the website
matched those on my disk!

I used UW as the source for the downloads…Is there a limit imposed by the
server (files.sagemath.org/osx/intel/sage….)?

I downloaded sage-8.4.rc1-OSX_10.13.6_x86_64.app.dmg a while ago. I verified
the checksum, and then tried to open the .dmg on a 10.6.8 system. After
churning for a while, I got an alert saying the disk image could not be opened
because there was no were "no mountable file systems”.

I used the “open” command from the command line, with the name of the .dmg
file. Is there something I missed?

The image could not be mounted in my case, or KCrisman’s case (in both, the
image did not [seem to] contain mountable file systems). I think in both
cases, the MD5 checksums matched after download.

I tried on 10.13.6; Karl used 10.11.

Built on two macOS systems: both builds completed without problems.

I tried on 10.6, 10.11, and 10.13. The latter is the only one that worked,
because, I think, the .dmg is built with only an APFS file system inside, which
the earlier versions of macOS do not support.

I tried the first two because of Volker's email, which said that what he built
should work on versions back to 10.6. Rereading his message, I think he meant
that the binaries should work, not that the .dmg’s should work.

Built on three macOS systems from a fresh clone of the develop repository,

macOS 10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core Core i7): build completed w/o problems,
and all tests (‘ptestlong’) passed.

macOS 10.13.6 (2017 iMac Pro, 18-core Xeon W): build completed w/o problems.
Testing (‘ptestlong’) yielded the two failures

sage -t --long --warn-long 59.2 src/sage/doctest/external.py # Killed due to

macOS 10.13.6 (2017 MBP, Quad-core Core i7): build blew up on package “xz”.
Never saw that before. Possibly a compatibility issue with command-line tools?
 Any thoughts?

Logs for the last two (ptestlong.log and xz…..log attached).

Built from fresh clone of the develop tree on two macOS systems:

10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core Core i7): built w/o problems, and all tests
passed.

10.13.6 (2017 iMac Pro, 18-core Xeon W): first build blew up on the gcc build;
I did a “make distclean” and reran it. The build completed w/o problems.

Anyone know why GCC is being built again? This did not happen with 8.5.beta2.
It was built on both systems.

Testing (‘ptestlong’) yielded three failures, reported with the 8.5.beta0 build
on this system:

sage -t --long --warn-long 59.7 src/sage/combinat/designs/ext_rep.py # Killed

Actually, only the first two failed; all tests for the third passed. I was in
the wrong directory (8.5.beta0) when looking at the install log.

10.13.6 (2017 iMac Pro, Xeon W): failures in 3 files:

sage -t --long --warn-long 58.7 src/sage/combinat/designs/ext_rep.py # Killed
due to abort
sage -t --long --warn-long 58.7 src/sage/doctest/external.py # Killed due to
abort
sage -t --long --warn-long 58.7 src/sage/libs/singular/polynomial.pyx # 1
doctest failed

The first two are repeatable when run singly. The last one passed on its own.

I reran the full test on the iMac Pro with the same results.

Built w/o problems, from a fresh clone of the develop tree, on two macOS
systems.

10.13.6 (2017 iMac Pro, Xeon W): testing (‘ptestlong’) yielded two failures:
sage -t --long --warn-long 57.7 src/sage/combinat/designs/ext_rep.py # Killed
due to abort
sage -t --long --warn-long 57.7 src/sage/doctest/external.py # Killed due to
abort

The discussion in #25921 indicates that these are due to the issue with
fork/exec in Obj-C code. The “workaround” suggested doesn’t work for either of
these in my case. Using “OBJC_DISABLE… sage -t …”, I still get an immediate
abort in both cases.

10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core Core i7): testing (‘ptestlong’) had all tests
passing.

Oh, good catch! Thanks!

I did it the other way; most of the examples in the trac report use the latter;
I think it’s only your comment that uses “YES”.

When I use “YES”, both of these pass for me.

On 10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core Core i7) and 10.14.2 (2017 MBP, Quad-core

On 10.13.6 (2017 iMac Pro, Xeon W), there was one failure:

The failure is repeatable when run singly.

Log appended. I searched Trac, but came up empty. Is this one known? I have

The failure on High Sierra (10.13) is puzzling. Anyone have an idea why this

Built w/o problems on three macOS platforms from a fresh clone of the develop
tree.

10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core Core i7): all tests passed!

10.13.6 (2017 iMac Pro, 18-core Xeon W): all tests passed!
However, repeating the “loop” testing of polynomials.pyx showed the same
intermittent failures as before (this failure occurred in 4 of 8 tests).

10.14.2 (2017 MBP, Quad-core Core i7): one testing failure:
sage -t --long --warn-long 77.8 src/sage/numerical/backends/logging_backend.py
# Killed due to abort

When run by itself the test passed. I then reran the full test cycle, with no
failures (other than a batch of timeouts, due to my being unable to keep my MBP
from going to sleep at intervals).

Log for the logging_bsckend failure attached.

Built successfully on three macOS platforms: 10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core
Core i7), 10.13.6 (2017 iPac Pro, 18-core Xeon W), 10.14.3 (2017 MBP, Quad-core
Core i7).

Testing (‘ptestlong’) went as follows:

10.11.6: all tests passed!

10.13.6: Failures in two files:
sage -t --long --warn-long 70.7 src/sage/matrix/matrix_space.py # 1 doctest
failed
sage -t --long --warn-long 70.7 src/sage/libs/singular/polynomial.pyx # 1
doctest failed
The first of these passed when run standalone. The second (known to be
intermittent) passed this time.

10.14.3: all tests passed!

The logged failures are:

sage -t --long --warn-long 70.7 src/sage/matrix/matrix_space.py
**

sage -t --long --warn-long 70.7 src/sage/libs/singular/polynomial.pyx # 1

Did that, with attached results (146 failures). Why would “https” be an
unknown URL type.

I ran this on two of the systems: 10.11.6 (MBP) and 10.13.6 (iMac Pro).

Built on three macOS platforms: 10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core Core i7),
10.13.6 (2017 iMac Pro, 18-core Xeon W), and 10.14.3 (2017 MBP, Quad-core Core
i7).

I started each with a fresh clone of the develop branch.

On 10.11.6, the build completed w/o problems. Testing (‘ptestlong’) completed
with two tests failing:
sage -t --long --warn-long 96.9 src/sage/doctest/external.py # Timed out
sage -t --long --warn-long 96.9 src/sage/misc/latex.py # Timed out
Log for these is attached.

On 10.13.6, the build blew up on gsl, claiming that a header file
(gsl/gsl_sort_double.h) was not found (although it appeared to be there). I
ran “make distclean” and reran the build. It completed w/o problems. For
testing (‘ptestlong’), only the continuing “polynomial.pyx” leak problem showed
up.

On 10.14.3, the build completed w/o problems. Testing (‘ptestlong’) completed
with all tests passed!

Out of sheer cussedness, I built this from a fresh clone of the develop tree on
three macOS systems, 10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core Core i7); 10.13.6 (2017
iMac Pro, 18-core Xeon W); and 10.14.3 (2017 MPB, Quad-core Core i7).

10.11.6: no problems with build; testing (‘ptestlong’) had two failures:
  sage -t --long --warn-long 85.4 src/sage/misc/latex.py # Timed out
  sage -t --long --warn-long 85.4 src/sage/doctest/external.py # Timed out
Logs attached. I ran each separately and then as a second full test run, with
the same results. The logs are kind of puzzling.

10.13.6: no problems with build; testing (‘ptestlong’) had one failure, the
usual in polynomial.pyx (lots of unexpected leaks).

10.14.3: no problems with build; all tests (‘ptestlong’) passed!

Built from fresh clone of the develop tree, with no problems, on three macOS
platforms. Testing (‘ptestlong’) went as follows:

10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core Core i7): one transient failure (succeeded
when run singly):
File "src/sage/matrix/matrix_space.py", line 1981, in
sage.matrix.matrix_space.MatrixSpace._an_element_
Failed example:
M.density()
Expected:
99/100
Got:
49/50

10.13.6 (2017 iMac Pro, 18 core Xeon W): all tests passed!

10.14.5 (2017 MBP, Quad-core Core i7): one transient failure (succeeded when
run singly):
sage -t --long --warn-long 76.2 src/sage/parallel/map_reduce.py
Timed out

Justin

PS: timeouts on the MBP’s may be due to their habit of sleeping if ignored for
too long. I have yet to figure out why, and persuade them to knock it off. (I
have them on power when testing, and settings off that induce sleeping
[AFAICT]).

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I do have that unchecked. There are two checked items for “Power Adapter":
 - Prevent computer from sleeping…
 - Wake for wi-fi access

Built w/o problems on two macOS systems 10.13.6 (18-core iMac Pro) and 10.14.5
(2017 MBP, Quad-core Core i7).

Testing (‘ptestlong’) results:
10.13.6: one failure:

The “usual” failure: a lot of leaks. Singleton run passed.

10.14.5: all tests passed!

Built w/o problems on macOS 10.13.6 (2017 iMac Pro, 18-core Xeon W). Testing
(‘ptestlong’) yielded one failure:
1 item had failures:
   1 of 12 in sage.libs.singular.polynomial.singular_polynomial_call
[55 tests, 1 failure, 404.40 s]
--
sage -t --long --warn-long 69.7 src/sage/libs/singular/polynomial.pyx # 1
doctest failed
--
Total time for all tests: 404.4 seconds
cpu time: 404.4 seconds
cumulative wall time: 404.4 seconds

When run by itself, the failure recurred, but with different output. Maybe
“good garbage” vs. “bad garbage”?

Built w/o problems, from a fresh clone of the develop/8.9-b4 tree, on three
macOS systems. Testing (‘ptestlong’ in each case) yielded:

10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core Core i7): all tests passed!

10.13.6 (2017 iMac Pro, 18-core Xeon W): one test failed:
  ./sage -t --long --warn-long 70.3 src/sage/libs/singular/polynomial.pyx
The usual issue with many leaks. This test intermittently passes and fails
when run by itself.

10.14.6 (2017 MBP, Quad-core Core i7): all tests passed!

Results from building fresh clone of develop branch are the same as for 8.9-b6,
on three macOS systems: 10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core i7), 10.13.6 (2017

Last time 8.9-b6), the test failed twice when run by itself.

This time, it passed twice when run by itself.

Go figure...

Deja vu all over again :-} As with 8.9-b6 and -b7, the build, from a fresh
clone of the develop branch, worked w/o problems, on three macOS systems:
10.11.6 (mid-2015 MBP, Quad-core i7), 10.13.6 (2017 iMac Pro, 18-core Xeon W),
