[saligaonet] Sunday, at church... /Plastics

2004-08-22 Thread ANNETTE D'SOUZA
Hi SaligaoNetters
From: Frederick Noronha [EMAIL PROTECTED]
.told me that a function planned for tomorrow (Sunday) morning, will
see the local parish youth embark on an efficient and eco-friendly garbage
disposal system. This is being worked out in association with the consumer
forum.
Oh that's good! As I type this, the meeting must be ending considering the
time difference - 9 a.m. here.

Meanwhile, I do wish we Saligaokars would consume less plastics and then
struggling to dispose of them. (We all do consume voraciously, including
myself... a visit to the market or supermarket brings one back home laden
with plastics, unlike the good ole 'posros' in the past.) Just sharing a
thought.
Let me share one of mine Rico - Re plastic bags for shopping.
Just do what we do in Donvaddo (though I dont do it here) ... We dont throw
out plastic bags, we use the same ones, separate one for veg. separate for
meat, separate for fish etc.. When going marketing, these bags are taken in
one of the cloth bags. When brought home full of stuff, the latter is
emptied into the proper places or containers at home, the bags are all
washed dried ready for use the next time. We have been doing this for
years since our return from Africa. The bags are burnt only when spoilt
cant be used any longer. I'm sure many people are doing the same thing
nowadays as they must have realised that there's less garbage to burn.
Of course, if there's water scarcity... that's another matter
altogethergrrh

Enjoying the weekend I hope, all you guys gals... mmm should it be gals
guys?

Ta ra
Annette

[saligaonet] Goa promises database on villages

2004-08-22 Thread Frederick Noronha
Maybe Saligao need not wait for the government for
these things to happen. The Saligao List (by
Shannon) is a good lead. Can we take the idea
further? Forget about WTO and such concepts, we
all need to understand our own village better. FN

Goa promises database on villages

SANJAY BANERJEE

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ SATURDAY, AUGUST 21, 2004 05:46:12 PM ]
PANAJI: It is not the small townships in Goa rather the villages that lend
the unique ambience of the town and village way of life. With nearly 50 per
cent of the small population of about 13 lakh residing in the villages, a
database of the 370 villages on its people, heritage, way of life and the
food habits would bring the state closer home to the rest of the nation and
across the boundary.

The Union ministry of communications and information technology, Census and
the state government are jointly involved in a pilot project of the Planning
Commission to create a database for the state. While bigger states like
Maharashtra could be taken up selectively under a nation-wide project, Goa
has the advantage of being a two-district state whose wealth in the villages
could be mapped up for planning and promoting tourism.

A two-day workshop on IT for micro level planning jointly organised by the
Goa unit of national informatics centre and the state government concurred
that the information content should deal with the dietary habits,
nutritional intake, village sports and talents, biodiversity and ecological
conditions.

The list is long with the aim to create a comprehensive database. For eg
instead of documenting that there is a library, the participants said it
should also say which are the books that are also available.

With star hotels, restaurants catering exotic food having a village address,
prominent festivals, spice farms and tourist places with remote beaches, a
database would not only be an extension of the tourism potential of the
state but also ensure wealth generation for individuals, say those
associated with the tourism industry.

More than two million tourists with 18 lakh domestic tourists are expected
this tourist season. Besides, says the planning secretary of Goa, Dharmendra
Sharma, the state government could be the largest clients of the database.

The database on traditional knowledge, perception, native intelligence etc
of the people of the village and its protection is the need of the hour in
view of WTO, globalisation and liberalisation, notes the senior bureaucrat.

[saligaonet] St. Anne's chapel--VI

2004-08-22 Thread Nascimen

St.Annes ChapelVI
The First Organized Committee of the Chapel.

The person who really associated with the "capelistas" of the
three wards belonging to the Chapel of St. Anne was Fr. Pedro Gabriel Saldanha,
a man of foresight, energetic and dedicated to his task. He was the son of Luis
de Saldanha from Arrarim and of Rosa Matias, ordained on 17 th July, 1864, at
Rachol Seminary Church, by Archbishop Amorim Pessoa. This Minister of God
shouldered the spiritual responsibilities of the Chapel from 1864 to 1867.Till
then as there was no formation of a Committee, Fr. Pedro Gabriel Saldanha chose
some of the warders( capelistas) to carry on the affairs of the chapel.
In an auspicious meeting of bairristas held on
9th March, 1879, it was resolved that the formation of the Committee
be established and the first Committee was chosen: President/.chaplain of St.
Annes chapel, Fr. Pedro Gabriel Saldanha, Mr. Pedro Damiao Carneiro( Donvaddo)
as Treasurer and two members( Vogais), Mr. Joaquim Erasmo Eufemiano Cordeiro(
Mollebhatt) and Mr. Manuel Antonio Fernandes( Muddavaddi0. This Committee served
from 1879 to 1887. The highlights of what they did was:
A)Forward a petition to the Archbishop D. Aires de ornelas e
Vasconcelos, dated 1st January, 1879, requesting His Grace to grant
the bairristas permission to use white dress( opa branca)and blue cape(murca
azul), carry a cross and two candle sticks( cirios)in the chapel of St. Anne and
Saligao Church during l;iturgical services. The Archbishop, through Promoter Fr.
Domingos Joao R. Pinto, Parish Priest of Panjim informed the members that
permission to form an Association and write the Constitution of the chapel of
St. Anne and its Confraria( Confraternity) was granted.
B) The Statutes or Constitution of the Chapel and Confraria
were placed before the bairristas, at a meeting held on 9th March
1879. It consisted of 8 Chapters and 50 Articles. After the reading and
explanation of each article, it was approved and signed by the warders.
According to this approval confrades were accepted and their number was 60 on
the first day( 6th July, 1879) and subsequently the enrollment of
members increased.
C) On that day itself, Mr. Francisco Xavier Cordeiro from
Mollebhatt was chosen to celebrate the President/ Mordomo of the feast of the
chapel for the year 1879, authorizing the treasurer to hand over the fixed
consignacao( amount of money) to him.

On 30th July, 1882, Mr. Joaquim Pascoal Cordeiro (
Mollebhatt0 was nominated member-Secretary of the Committee instead of Mr.
Erasmo E.Cordeiro who resigned. On this day the bairristas imposed on the
President/Mordomo, the obligation of celebrating salves in the evening and asked
the warders to do the illumination.
Heavy expenses were incurred and the Committee proposed to fix
an amount of 8 tangas to be taken from each Joneiro to defray the expenses.
The proposal was accepted in the meeting held on 22nd September,
1882. It was also decided in the meeting not to give articles belonging to the
chapel for the particular use of the bairristas
Mr. Jose Maria Fernandes( Mudddavaddi0 was chosen as Atorney(
Procurador) and deliberated at the meeting held on 21st September,
1884, to take further two tangas of each joneiro for expensesto be
continued.

Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.
