SALIGAOSPORTS AND SPORTSMEN---III.

Yesterday we read about the cricket players of yesteryears of
Saligao, to-day we shall write about Hockey, football and other players who
excelled in various other sports disciplines..
*HockeyDr. Eric DMello and Eric Saldanha played big hockey
for famous club " Lusitanians" and for Engineering College Eleven etc.
Mr. Francis DSousa( Foru)was outstanding in hockey in
Calcutta playing for Class 1 Tournament like the Beighton Cup.

E.Pinto played centre forward for 12 years for Entebbe and
Kampala Goan Institutes. Opened the goal for Uganda eleven against South African
team that visited East Africa for the first and only time.

Micheal DSouzaa tough and reliable back, good anticipation of
the movements of the opposing forwards, showed energetic and powerful clearance
of the ball.

Arthur AbreuA judicious half who constantly fed his forwards,
a lanky but never tiring player who played a clean game. The team generally
depended on his accurate and timely passes.

Casimiro Dantas and Zeferino Adriano Cruz were speedy forwards,
who always posed a danger to the opponents.

Charlie DSouza was also a fine hockey player, having played
for Uganda against Kenya.

*Football: Eutropio Pinto, late Tommy Emar, Jaime DSouza,,
Damiao Remedios, Jimmy Machado, Americo Coelho, Trindade DSouza, Juliao
Cordeirothese formed the nucleus of Saligao team within memory..

In India and England, the family of Mr. Vitorino
Saldanha-Arrarim produced many outstanding sportsmen.
*In Hockey.
Rui Saldanha was an Oxford Blue in hockey and finally donned
the International cap for England and played at the OLYMPIC GAMES of 1972 at
Munich in Germany. Although England lost, Rui got an excellent write-up from
Sports commentators.

*Badminton: Hipolito Saldanha, Ruis father played hockey and
football for St. Xaviers College in the leading Bombay Tournaments. But he
excelled in Badminton and was the All Bombay Champion in 1942.

*Tennis: The eldest Saldanha son, Dr. Jerry won 3 gold medals
in a line for Singles, Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles in an Open North London
Club Tournament in 1924.

*Sports. The son of Dr. Jerry, Dr. Victor Saldanha represented
his Medical College in Mangalore and annexed cups in running and jumping in the
All India inter Collegiate Meets twice.
Tommy Emar, a nephew, was a great sporstman too and donated the
famous Tommy Emar Cup for Womens Hockey in Bombay. ( His father M.R. DSouza
had donated a cup in East Africa for Men Hockey.).

The two Fernandes brothers, F.X. and Joe from Mudddavaddi
must be numbered among the outstanding sporstmen of their time.
Their nephew, Brigadier George DSouza of Nagpur was an
outstanding sportman in the Army teams in hockey, football and Boxing.
I offer my apologies in advance to any Saligao player who have
bee omitted inadvertently from the above list.
In conclusion, I extend my good wishes to all the present
Saligao players who participate in games, for the progress and success in their
endeavours.( concluded)
By Mr. Eutropio Pinto-Arrarim, Saligao.

SALIGAO IN THE COMPUTER AGE 2035 AD---III( CONTINUATION).

By Simonne St. Anne.
*Education--- Our system of education is excellent by any
standard. University courses using television and remote computers have become
highly effective. This automated education leaves teachers free to concentrate
on the more human and creative aspects of teaching.
Information retrieval facilities give access to encyclopedias
and vast stores of reports and documents. Far from acting as a substitute for
books, our screens allow our children to explore the contents of every library
anywhere in the world.

*Medical facilities---Our communication channels also provide
excellent medical facilities. " Tele-medicine" is an international facility also
available in our little village. We have access to almost any clinic anywhere in
the world via Compulink. Today we dont dial a nurse anymore, we punch in a
request for medical services. Within seconds we are connected to a remote
diagnostic station which employs powerful television lenses and extra sensory
per-ceptors together with some of the very latest medical instruments.
Yes, it is no longer necessary to step outside ones bedroom
for medical examination. With the help of the medical technician, a distant
doctor or specialist can examine you very thoroughly. The patient can see and
talk to the doctor and the doctors large colour monitor can be filled with a
closeup of the patients eye, or tongue or skin rash. The doctor can listen to a
distant stethoscope and see multiple instrument readings and computer analyses
of them. The doctor can then prescribe any drug made anywhere in the world. And
he can keep a constant check on the patients reaction to the medication.
*Coming HomeMy parents would have preferred to live in Saligao
if only it had the facilities that Bombay then offered---good education, medical
facilities, entertainment, and most important highly paid jobs. Now
telecommunications provide all these amenities and I have achieved their dream
of settling down in our village. I have my own garden and farm and I can walk in
the fields and woods; I can eat fresh vegetables every day and I literally have
the world on my fingertips
My office in the village street is part of an international
advertising agency. And companies need no longer be located in big cities. And
every branch of my company is connected to the art studio I run from Saligao. I
earn as much as I could have earned in Bombay, New York or Paris. And I live in
the village which is more self-sufficient than in any earlier age
This year we celebrate the centenary of the Saligao Union in
Bombay. Were celebrating the event in Saligao , too. And in London and in
Toronto and in Nairobi and in a hundred other places where Saligaokars now
reside. We will all be together for the big event---via telecom! ( end)

CONFERENCE OF MAE DE DE DEUS, SALIGAO.(19792004).
The Conference of Mae de Deus of the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul in the Parish of Saligao, commemorated the Silver Jubilee of its foundation
on 27th September, 2004 with a special Mass celebrated by his Grace, Archbishop
Emeritus Raul N. Gonsalves, at Saligao Church .
"Blessed Frederic Ozanam founded the Society of St. Vincent the
Paul in 1883. He is supposed to have exclaimed " I want to wrap up the whole
world in a network of charity". Today the Society counts around a million
members spread through almost a hundred and fifty countries in the five
continents; a real global network of charity, of which the members of the Mae de
Deus Conference are proud to be a part-said Archbishop-Patriarch Filipe Neri
Ferrao, in a message sent earlier to the Conference of Mae de Deus, Saligao.

Mrs Annie Cordeiro from Arrarim, who had been and still
continues as a member of the Conference of Mae de Deus since its inception,
traces a bit of history of this Conference as well its aims and objects of the
conference, in her well written article "Vincentians---Lend a Hand" which I am
transcribing here for Saligaonetters.

The year 2004 is a memorable year for the Conference of Mae de
Deus being the Silver Jubilee of the Conference. Twenty-five years ago, on
27th September, 1979, the late Rev. Father Roberto Barreto ( Parish
Priest of Mae de Deus Parish, Saligao, from 1974 to1980), sowed a small seed in
the parish of Saligao. This seed grew to be a large tree spreading its branches
across the village. This was an eventful day in Saligao; thus the Conference of
Mae de Deus was conceived.
I can rightfully claim to be the trunk of this large tree as I
have been in the conference since its inception, giving full support to its
branches.
The Conference of Mae de Deus is a unit of the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul. All Conferences are basic working units of the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul. The members of the Conference are known as Vincentians.
Vincentians should always be ready to lend a hand. The kind of
help offered is important but more important is a desire of the heart that
should inspire every human being to help his fellowman; this is a law of
existence.
At Christmas, we have an obligation, to help one another and
the Conference of Mae de Deus helps us to fulfil the obligation. The work of the
Vincentian is caring for the poor and less fortunate brethren of our Society
irrespective of cast or creed. Visitation of the poor is the core activity of
the Society of St. Vincent the Paul, hence a bounden duty of all Vincentians. It
brings them closer to Christ who lives in the poor. Our contact with the poor
promotes love of God in their lives and places the poor at the heart of a
Vincentian..to be continued.
By Mrs. Annie Cordeiro.

  If you reach Arrarim now,
and visit Dilip Kamat's shop, you might be surprised to find it almost
totally demolished (as of Monday). Dilip is rebuilding the structure, and
this landmark (earlier run by his dad, Purshottam) is temporarily shifted
to Uncle Seby's earlier shop, just opposite. FN
