[SA-List] Future features of Servers Alive

2021-03-16 Thread Dirk Bulinckx
Hi,

It could be for some of you this mail will look like a double of a mail of a
few days/weeks ago, and I’m sorry about that. But as the list server system has
having a lot of issues the mail were not send correctly (and as such not
received by a lot of the members). So we just moved to a totally new system
and hopefully all will work fine now  (and I’ll get some more reactions).

*   AWS

The current beta build (http://beta.woodstone.nu) includes the checking of EC2
instances (EC2=virtual machines on AWS (Amazon cloud))

*   Mail as alert

Mail as alert is in Servers Alive since day 1. We are working on a full rewrite
of the mail sending engine.

This will include some new things like:

* TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 support (TLS 1.3 if the OS will natively support it
that is -> currently only the Windows 10 preview and Windows 2022)

- oAuth (oAuthBearer and xOauth2 ) authentication

- Authentication using SCRAM-SHA-512, SCRAM-SHA-256,
- SCRAM-SHA-1,DIGEST-MD5 and NTLM
- Automatic selection of the authentication mechanism to use

What we would like to remove:

*   Direct send
* DUN (dial-up networking) before the actual sending of mail
* POP3 authentication (authenticate towards POP3 server before using the
SMTP server)

Could you give me some feedback on the above? Thanks and happy testing of
Servers Alive.

Dirk.

[SA-List] Servers Alive: mail sending - future

2021-03-15 Thread Dirk Bulinckx
Hello,

Sending mail as an alert is something that has been in Servers Alive since
day 1.

And each release added some new features for it.

We are now at the point of a full re-write of the mail sender and therefore
it's important for us to know what features are missing (of the mail sender)
and what features are in it but no longer needed.

What is missing, is something you will have to tell me.. I can however tell
you what will be done (100% sure)

* Support for TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 - based on what the operating can do
-> this means that for example for TLS 1.3 currently it will be limited to
the private Win10 preview, and Windows 2022
*   oAuth (oAuthBearer and xOauth2 ) authentication
*Authentication using SCRAM-SHA-512, SCRAM-SHA-256,
SCRAM-SHA-1,DIGEST-MD5 and NTLM

(and the authentication "type" will no longer have to be selected, we will
negotiate it with the mail server)

For the "obsolete" features I think I have a good view on it, but want to
be sure, so if there is something that we would like to remove and you still
use it, please let me know:

*   Direct send
* DUN (dial-up network) before the actual mail sending
* POP3 authentication (used before using SMTP to send mail)

Dirk.

I need to monitor the size of a directory recursively and send an alert when
the size exceeds a user-definable threshold.

The directory is a mail queue on our email server and when it starts getting
large, it usually indicates a compromised email account being used to send
spam.

Is there any Servers Alive add-on that could do this?

Seems I forgot to answer this one...sorry about that

The keep-alive is "limited" to every x minutes and will be send to the
default TO of the primary mailsetup.
If you want to have a type of summary, you can use the EXECUTIVE ALERTS
(under SETUP-ALERTS)

The "older" program that are refering too, which ones are they? Teams is
indeed something we would like to add, as a "competitor" to Slack.

Dirk,
I see the keep alive email option that will send every x minutes. Is there
a way to schedule to send this at a particular time, and to a particular
person or team? Unless I am missing that option.
Who does it send to by default?
Is there a daily summary email that can be send out at a particular
date/time? or is the keep alive that option?

Under the Alerts drop down, there is some older programs that are no longer
in use. Can you add a few of the newer ones? ie. Microsoft Teams; or Discord
(discord bot integration) two-way communication with the bot to read/write
to SA?

Thanks!

Hi,

I would like to create a COM check that will based upon the public WHO-IS

Although the whois protocol is standard, the output that you get is not :-(
So I will have to focus on "some" TLDs, and upon request add other/extra
TLDs afterwards.

Can you tell me
1) is this a check that you would see as being usefull?
2) and what TLDs would you use it for?

(do know that the whois output of some TLDs does not include the expiration
date of the domain :-( )

That can be done differently :-)

You have the entries you want to duplicate?  Great;

Now create a TEXTFILE with PER LINE the IP (or hostname) of the devices for
which you want to create those new entries.
Via EDIT-IMPORT, select this textfile, select NO DELIMITER, select the
"template" entries (checkmark to place in front of them), click on IMPORT.
Entries created :-)

Hi,

Using the WebApp addon (http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/addons.php) it should
be possible IF the "submit" (of the username/password) invokes another page
and not code (Java or any other) that is within the page.

get the moon:stop icon on a remote system. And IF you run it on the system

you can start the remote icon via a remote desktop session on the system

it works now. The only thing i did was to change the loglevel of SA !?!
But maybe i missed something. I have SA running on a windows 7 vm on a HA
cluster.
I thought the remote client is now to connect to this instance of SA and
manage it (add/delete hosts, set hosts in maintenance ... ).
But i don't get the GUI (On my local pc also SA 7.2 is installed).
What is the recommended way to remotly administer a SA instance ?

Do you see the connection attempt in the servers alive logfile?

Remember v7.x is no longer supported.

Re: [SA-List] can't connect to SA on remote host, but no error message

2017-07-20 Thread Dirk Bulinckx
There is no good way to do remote administration.
The only option there is (since the "interact with desktop" feature of a
service no longer works thanks to MS), to stop the service on the remote
system, start the app, make the changes, stop the app, start the service,
and all of that via a remote desktop session.

Hi Dirk,

it works now.

Bernd

Do you see the connection attempt in the servers alive logfile?

Remember v7.x is no longer supported.

HI,

we are using SA 7.2 on a windows 7 virtual machine. From my local pc (also
SA 7.2) i try to connect to the vm with the remote icon. I entered the
hostname, user and password, press "connect" and ... nothing happens. No
error message, no connection, nada.
Status remains "Not connected"
Am i doing something wrong ? The port is opened (checked with nmap). I
created a user under People -> Person, gave him a password, checked "Allow
Remote Client Access" and "Person is active".
Under Build-in-Servers -> Remote Clients i entered our complete ip range
(10.35.0.0/255.255.0.0, exact in that way).

Any ideas ?

Thanks.

I suppose it's "stand-alone"?
While what I propose is a service that integrates with Servers Alive, you
use all alerting and output feature of Servers Alive.

For that $100 from how many locations are the checks done?

Hi Dirk

We currently use a similar service, and would be interested to see how your
approach pans out. We currently pay about $100/year, so it would have to
compete price-wise. Also, a feature that our current solution has that is
important for us is the reporting. Nice, clean, simple reports that can be
added to reports to management etc, are important. And for latency, west
coast US or thereabouts would be needed for us.

see it like that.

Your "personal" Servers Alive instance running on your network would connect
to the cloud-service and use that for some checks.

Re: [SA-List] Check/Response Question

2017-04-09 Thread Dirk Bulinckx
As said via scripting it's possible.

First you will have to create a script that is able to convert the check
result into the address you would like

Function nEmail (x)
 s=trim(x)
 rcode=left(s,3)
 select case rcode
  case "200"
   nEmail="d...@woodstone.nu"
  case "404"
   nEmail="supp...@woodstone.nu"
  case else
   nEmail="sa...@woodstone.nu"
 end select
end function

In this example script the result of the function is different based on a
return code I get on a webpage.

Then via setup-general-script, "create" the script in SA by pointing to the
correct VBS file and to the correct function (nEmail in my example).

On the CUSTOM tab of the entry you will have to flag the option: "Convert
response using", select the script you just create and let it go "to"
"custom value 1" (or any other number).
Then in the alert you create the TO of the alert should then be %c1
(assuming you're used custom 1 just above).

When the check is executed, SA will at the end convert custom value 1 based
on that script (and using the actual check result) and then within the alert
we can use that custom value as TO of the alert.

How this helps

You need at least build 8.1.2790 (http://beta.woodstone.nu)

In the current beta there is a feature where you can at the end of a check
have a script change the check result, but also the custom fields. What I
would like to add is a way to have the alert send to a customfield that way
you can within a script determine the "TO" of an alert by scripting

Great! I realize it wouldn't produce the up/down end result that SA
currently determines.

thinking a little more into it, it would be a level of an alert.

"up" for everything is all good, no triggered alerts/thresholds;
"warning" for a triggered  alert/threshold;
when x (# of or % of) alerts/thresholds triggered "critical {status}"; <--
different levels of this area too.
when all alerts have been triggered, check is "down"

Is it possible to have one check with multiple outcomes based on the check
threshold result?

For example. I have a UPS and I am monitoring the timeticks on. When the
UPS drops to 360,000 ticks, I want the 'alert' to send a specific email.
UPS has 1HR battery life left. Then one at 180,000, 30min left... etc..
only way I can see about doing this is created a check with the timeticks at
the specified threshold to produce the alert I want. instead of one check,
and the alert that is sent is based on the timetick value at the time of the
check.

"up" for everything is all good, no triggered alerts/thresholds;
"warning" for a triggered  alert/threshold;
when x (# of or % of) alerts/thresholds triggered "critical {status}"; <--
different levels of this area too.
when all alerts have been triggered, check is "down"

Subject: [SA-List] Ping Issues over VPN

Hi,

I have a pair of Sophos UTM firewalls that provide a VPN between two
locations. On my end we are on a 172.16.x.x subnet and at the other end it's
172.17.x.x. I am using Servers Alive (SA) to ping test 10 different devices
on the 172.17.x.x end of the VPN but SA frequently shows that the devices
are down when they actually are up.

I have SA configured with the Sophos UTM ping test as the primary connection
and then the rest of the devices dependent on the Sophos being up. I have
played around with the timeout value set as high as 25 ms on all the devices
as well as dropping the success % down to 50 but I still am getting frequent
false downs. I verify whether there's a down condition by command-line
pinging or remotely accessing devices while SA indicates Down.

I also have a ping utility called Ping Plotter that keeps a history of
periodic pinging that shows ping success/fail as well as average response
time which is roughly 75 ms and very infrequent fails.

Any suggestions on SA settings that might fix my false downs?

include more key-algorithms and MACS , typicaly used for state-of-the-art

ToDo: Disable SSLv2 and export grade cryptography cipher suites. Ensure that

If I try to add using Subscription ID only, error is, "You can't add a new

Hi,

I have Servers Alive running on Windows 2012R2 and I need to restart it every 3
to 4 hours as it hangs.

This is on no 1 check.

This was installed on Windows 10 and I had the same error which I did put down
to permissions on the way I was running it.

I have to kill SA via Task Manager.

I am doing the following types of check

Pings

Website checks

Disk space

VMware

I would like to start to use this to provide uptime stats to the business but I
am unable to do this at the moment!

Subject: [SA-list] ODBC Query Add-on

I have downloaded the COMODBC / ODBC Query Add on from
http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/addons.php
(http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/addons.php) but am having trouble configuring
it in Servers Alive

I downloaded the installer and ran it.

It asked for install location: default was C:\Program Files (x86)\salive
however my servers alive install is at C:\Program Files (x86)\Woodstone\Servers
Alive

I first tried in C:\Program Files (x86)\Woodstone\Servers Alive and noted that
the add-on (dll, help file, uninstaller, install log and .tlb) was installed
into C:\Program Files (x86)\Woodstone\Servers Alive\salive

Then restarted servers alive, added new check, chose external com, and noted
that the ODBC Query Add-on was an option in the drop down (good).

Clicked configure button and noted that comSAWrapper.exe process
started in task manager; however no pop up window or anything showed up to
actually configure things.

Killed servers alive, killed comSAWrapper process, copied 5 files from
C:\Program Files (x86)\Woodstone\Servers Alive\salive to C:\Program Files
(x86)\Woodstone\Servers Alive (I thought maybe the dll needed to be in the same
folder as servers alive executable)

Same result, comSAWrapper process started, but no configuration window or
anything opened.

Uninstalled COMODBC via programs and features on the server

Reinstalled, and this time let odbc add-in install in default location:
C:\Program Files (x86)\salive

Same result, comSAWrapper process started, but no configuration window or
anything opened.

Can someone please provide some assistance on how I should install and or run
this add-on so that I can configure and use it?

Thanks

Jonathan

Subject: [SA-list] SAlive freezing while writing report from template

We recently downloaded one of the report template examples from
http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/template_examples.php
(http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/template_examples.php) - the one by Brett
Hanson which is awesome and uses an XML and XSLT combination to produce the
report. We have noticed that ServersAlive freezes up while writing to the XML
file on occasion. I can find no pattern to the freeze I have tracked it
happening after 28 cycles, 109 cycles, and 164 cycles. Is it possible that the
file gets locked if someone has it open in a browser (which I know would be
fully expected since it is a report we produce to look at) and ServersAlive
cant write to it and locks up completely? ServersAlive stops responding
completely when this happens. I have included the lines of the log pertinent to
this issue showing that it stops right before writing the report file (at the
2:03 AM mark in the example below). Just curious if anyone has experienced this
issue before.

We removed all report generation for now to see if it remedies the issue of
ServersAlive freezing up.

Is there anything specific you want from that file? There are a lot of IP
addresses and such that I dont feel comfortable sending out over a
mailing list.

Subject: [SA-list] SMTP2POP3 Help

Im having some issues getting SMTP2POP3 working how I want it. Maybe
someone can assist. I tried a check sending an email from my mail server to
gmail in operating mode SMTP + POP3. Works, but the problem we just found was
we had an issue related to the mail leaving our facility. I had alerts set on
2 failures and was never alerted because the send always succeeded, even though
the POP3 check kept failing. But if I set it to alert on 1 failure in
this same scenario I would just keep getting up and down notices over and over
again as the SMTP check was succeeding. Is that accurate and if so is there a
way to solve that?

I also tried setting it up as 2 checks, one dependent on the first. Check one
SMTP and check 2 POP3, with the idea that now Im only alerted when POP3
fails, and itll stay down until it finally gets the email. Problem is
the 2nd check keeps failing saying messages received but not send by
correct application, but the only emails in the mailbox were SMTP2POP3
emails. Any way to resolve that?

Thanks!

I would say define the subscription in setup, but allow multiple subscriptions.
Then in the check, have a drop down menu to identify which subscription.

We would like to know that IF you would use this, would you use this for VMS

Subject: [SA-list] Minimum permissions for free disk space check

On Windows Server 2013, what are the minimum permissions required for servers
alive to read available disk space via a disk space check of the format:
\\SERVERNAME\C$ (file:///\\SERVERNAME\C$) ??

I want to use a service account to carry out the check, but DBA / Networks do
not want to give the service account more than bare minimum permissions
(understandably) to report on available disk space. SO far I have only had
success when I place the service account in the local administrators group (not
an option).

Thanks in advance,

I have several FileProperties external COM checks that were working fine for
months until a few weeks ago. Now they are timing out even if I increase the
Timeout value upwards from 5 seconds. I usually check the last write date of
oldest matching file. Some details and things Ive tried:

- Rebooted server

- Changed network checks to local, authentication is blank (local
file)

- Split out 15 checks to different start times out of 12 cycles

- Upgraded to 2.0 build 60

- Older Salive 7.2.2638

- Older Windows 2003 SP2

- Running as service

- Server load is low, but does peak to 100% during check cycle

- When running Check Entry now it is always correct

Thanks for the response. Yes the updated version resolved the hanging

I can test successfully the in the Alert Primary ( and alternate ) screens. I
have tried both with direct checked and unchecked test works either way
the alerting doesnt work with direct checked or unchecked.

Subject: [SA-list] SAlive hangs on external check

I am running SAlive enterprise on a 2012 server. And from time to time it pops
an error and stops working. I am not ready to hang the cause of that problem
on ServersAlive but I thought I would install SAlive on another server to
monitor SAlive on the first server. At least I would know primary had stopped
monitoring and could deal with it.

So I installed a second Servers Alive instance on a different (2012) server. I
have two checks one a ping which works consistently, the other an
external check which runs a VB exe that I have been using for years with
SAlive, and works fine on the primary server. I have SAlive running and the
problem entry in maintenance with SAlive is checking every minute, when I set
the problem entry to active, when the check fires on the next cycle, the SAlive
GUI goes to Not Responding. I have also tried to run other external programs
 they too hang SAlive.

By hang, I mean the SAlive GUI goes to not responding and stays there. I can X
out of the GUI so there is still some control but it ends
ungracefully with a Windows is not responding
dialog. The details from the dialog dont give much of a clue (below)
to me anyway. When it is hung, the external check I am running does
not appear in task list so I would claim it is getting stuck before it can
actually fire the external check.

I have learned that if I set the external program to cmd /c test.bat where
test.bat contains my exe, THAT works. I also learned that setting check to cmd
/c executable.exe hangs.

I guess I can run my check with a batch file, but I have never had to before
and wonder why this instance is different. My primary version is 7.9 this
version is 8.0 ( thought I would test new version when I installed this second
instance ).

Anybody got and ideas or means of further troubleshooting this
behavior?

Thanks

[SA-list] Website look?

2016-06-18 Thread Dirk Bulinckx
Hi,

I was wondering if some of you would be so kind to compare our existing website
(www.woodstone.nu (http://www.woodstone.nu)) to the probably new one
(www.woodstone.eu (http://www.woodstone.eu)) and tell me what you think of the
new look. Better? Worse?
(textual content is about v7 - not updated for v8!!)

the 100 should never be in the logfile, it's some intermediate state.
The 0 is most of the time a timeout

Hi Dirk

The response is not in error; its working as expected in that it says
the page is down when it is down, and up when it is up.

My question is: what is the difference between (100-) and
(0-) in the log?

If I gave you the URL now, and if it was accessible from the internet
(its not), you would just get 200 OK

I suppose that you're talking about some type of ticketing? And that this
ticketing system has an API and that this API can be called via HTTP(S) or via

Some ticketing system use correctly formated email for it too, that is also
possible via Servers Alive.

Not sure how we can help with that

Hi Dirk,

Any change in building this ?

1. A check to verify a value and/or existence of a registry key.
I do this with an External Errorlevel Check now (and a script), but it
would be nice to have that as a native check. It could be an external
COM check.

2. A check to verify if a mail has arrived.
Something like the second half of the SMTP2POP3 check that already
exists, but based on the subject of a message (not the timestamp
generated by SA). And an Alert that passes the subject as a parameter.
Example:
- Mail with subject = help me is send to per...@domain.com
- SA monitors that mailbox with POP3, reads the message, sets an alert
and deletes the message.
- SA triggers an Alert (type Execute Command) and starts an application
with parameter help me

Kind regards,
Pieter

Now that Servers Alive v7.2 is released we would like to know what new
feature you would like to have in the next version of Servers Alive...

What's your view on the future of Servers Alive?

RE: [SA-list] Feature Question/Request - Entry Duplicatation

2014-08-06 Thread Dirk Bulinckx
That's already in the product.
You can do a CTRL-D (or EDIT - new entry based on ).

And if you want to duplicate several entries then you can do the following:
create a textfile with the names of the new host(s), one name per line
via the EDIT-IMPORT option select the just create textfile and select (put
a checkmark next to it) all the entries that you want to duplicate.
click IMPORT
- new entries are created based on the existing entries, just using the new
hostname(s).

I just added a bunch of wireless access points to SA. They were all identical
accept for their IP address and 1/3 of their Entries name. It occurred to me
(not for the first time) that it would be nice to be able to select an entry,
duplicate it and open the duplicate entry for editing - all with one button
click or menu selection.

A variation on this would be situations where there is a check with a
subordinate check depending on it. In that case, it would be great if you could
duplicate both with the end action to open the primary check for editing.

If possible, please consider for a future release.

Thanks.

I have configured SA to send me email alerts through our in-house email server
when pings fail 1 time and when they are back up. The problem is I'm getting
only getting some alerts.

For example, I have 8 PCs that serve as time/attendance terminals. They all
automatically shutdown at night at the same time and they all turn on in the
morning at the same time. Their alerts are all configured the same. However, I
only receive one or two alerts at shutdown and on startup. It's not always the
same PC either.

Is this some time of timing issue with SA? I checked the mailserver log and it
shows the emails that get through but it doesn't show that the others were
attempted.

Hi,

I have a question about the Mailflow COM check.

The message that is send contains a timestamp in the subject field, ex.
SMTP2POP3 97421820140603.

It is obvious that the last part 20140603 refers to the date 2014, july, 3th.

Is it possible to calculate the time from the first part 974218 ?

In this example the message was send at 11:07.

Kind regards,

Pieter

The result of the query is returned if that is selected to do so in the

And it can also be logged to RRD (at least in the later beta's of v7.x from

I'm testing the beta.
What I found out:
Service recognizes configuration changes only after restart. Knowing that
you can configure the service using the GUI from the start menu. To
configure the service the remote client is not necessary.
So what is the purpose of the remote client ?

Some bugs:
Starting the GUI from the remote client, one service keeps being marked red
although it is running again and no server is down in the traffic light.
When I have the service running AND the GUI, i have two serversalive.exe in
the task manager. Closing the GUI normally kills one process, but sometimes
both processes keep running although GUI is closed.
When is the next stable release to be expected ?

I just removed the old address and added your new address.

It seems to work. Thank you.

RE: [SA-list] Unique id varible in SA ?

2014-01-04 Thread Dirk Bulinckx
In the current beta (2584 build) I just added a feature that will help you :-)
In all location were you can use the % parameters you can now also point to a
custom script.

Example:
You have a VBS file called c:\myscripts.vbs and within this file you have a
function called myoutput
function myoutput(x)

myoutput=1234
end function

In the SETUP: General\Custom Scripts you define a new script and point to
this file and to the name of the function (myoutput in the example). This will
give you an ID (for example 3)

In the locations were you can use the % parameters you can also use
(SCR=3)
which will be replaced by the output of the script with ID 3

Example:
HTTPpost to URL
http://www.something.com/(SCR=3)/something
(http://www.something.com/(SCR=3)/something)

will become
http://www.something.com/1234/something

The beta can be found on http://beta.woodstone.nu (http://beta.woodstone.nu)

Subject: [SA-list] Unique id varible in SA ?

Hello Dirk, please is any possibility how to get some unique id to HTTP(S)
alert ?
If not it is possible to add a functionality for creation of some unique
variable which
increments by 1 - something like sequence ?

Thank you in advance for your response.

Increment or change?
It's important that it's different each time but does it have to increment by
1?
