[SA-List] Future features of Servers Alive
Hi, It could be for some of you this mail will look like a double of a mail of a few days/weeks ago, and I’m sorry about that. But as the list server system has having a lot of issues the mail were not send correctly (and as such not received by a lot of the members). So we just moved to a totally new system and hopefully all will work fine now (and I’ll get some more reactions). * AWS The current beta build (http://beta.woodstone.nu) includes the checking of EC2 instances (EC2=virtual machines on AWS (Amazon cloud)) * Mail as alert Mail as alert is in Servers Alive since day 1. We are working on a full rewrite of the mail sending engine. This will include some new things like: * TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 support (TLS 1.3 if the OS will natively support it that is -> currently only the Windows 10 preview and Windows 2022) - oAuth (oAuthBearer and xOauth2 ) authentication - Authentication using SCRAM-SHA-512, SCRAM-SHA-256, - SCRAM-SHA-1,DIGEST-MD5 and NTLM - Automatic selection of the authentication mechanism to use What we would like to remove: * Direct send * DUN (dial-up networking) before the actual sending of mail * POP3 authentication (authenticate towards POP3 server before using the SMTP server) Could you give me some feedback on the above? Thanks and happy testing of Servers Alive. Dirk. To unsubscribe from this list please go to http://www.simplelists.com/confirm.php?u=8KIchYygV3kz4QXQydZqUA2M0dRvmk7K
[SA-List] Servers Alive: mail sending - future
Hello, Sending mail as an alert is something that has been in Servers Alive since day 1. And each release added some new features for it. We are now at the point of a full re-write of the mail sender and therefore it's important for us to know what features are missing (of the mail sender) and what features are in it but no longer needed. What is missing, is something you will have to tell me.. I can however tell you what will be done (100% sure) * Support for TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 - based on what the operating can do -> this means that for example for TLS 1.3 currently it will be limited to the private Win10 preview, and Windows 2022 * oAuth (oAuthBearer and xOauth2 ) authentication *Authentication using SCRAM-SHA-512, SCRAM-SHA-256, SCRAM-SHA-1,DIGEST-MD5 and NTLM (and the authentication "type" will no longer have to be selected, we will negotiate it with the mail server) For the "obsolete" features I think I have a good view on it, but want to be sure, so if there is something that we would like to remove and you still use it, please let me know: * Direct send * DUN (dial-up network) before the actual mail sending * POP3 authentication (used before using SMTP to send mail) Dirk. ___ Salive mailing list Salive@woodstone.nu To unsubscribe send a mail to salive-requ...@woodstone.nu and in the subject of the mail put the following: unsubscribe

Re: [SA-List] New Entry Based on..
That can be done differently :-) You have the entries you want to duplicate? Great; Now create a TEXTFILE with PER LINE the IP (or hostname) of the devices for which you want to create those new entries. Via EDIT-IMPORT, select this textfile, select NO DELIMITER, select the "template" entries (checkmark to place in front of them), click on IMPORT. The remote client, which has a bad name :-( is in fact a remote icon. You get the moon:stop icon on a remote system. Re: [SA-List] Check/Response Question
As said via scripting it's possible. First you will have to create a script that is able to convert the check result into the address you would like Function nEmail (x) s=trim(x) rcode=left(s,3) select case rcode case "200" nEmail="d...@woodstone.nu" case "404" nEmail="supp...@woodstone.nu" case else nEmail="sa...@woodstone.nu" end select end function In this example script the result of the function is different based on a return code I get on a webpage. Then via setup-general-script, "create" the script in SA by pointing to the correct VBS file and to the correct function (nEmail in my example). On the CUSTOM tab of the entry you will have to flag the option: "Convert response using", select the script you just create and let it go "to" "custom value 1" (or any other number). Then in the alert you create the TO of the alert should then be %c1 (assuming you're used custom 1 just above). When the check is executed, SA will at the end convert custom value 1 based on that script (and using the actual check result) and then within the alert we can use that custom value as TO of the alert. On my end we are on a 172.16.x.x subnet and at the other end it's 172.17.x.x. I am using Servers Alive (SA) to ping test 10 different devices on the 172.17.x.x end of the VPN but SA frequently shows that the devices are down when they actually are up. I have SA configured with the Sophos UTM ping test as the primary connection and then the rest of the devices dependent on the Sophos being up. I have played around with the timeout value set as high as 25 ms on all the devices as well as dropping the success % down to 50 but I still am getting frequent false downs. I verify whether there's a down condition by command-line pinging or remotely accessing devices while SA indicates Down. I also have a ping utility called Ping Plotter that keeps a history of periodic pinging that shows ping success/fail as well as average response time which is roughly 75 ms and very infrequent fails. RE: [SA-list] ODBC Query Add-on
Could you check if the interface isn't opening behind the Servers Alive interface? dirk From: Servers Alive Discussion List [mailto:salive@woodstone.nu] On Behalf Of Jonathan Lathigee Sent: Monday, November 14, 2016 9:20 PM To: Servers Alive Discussion List Subject: [SA-list] ODBC Query Add-on I have downloaded the COMODBC / ODBC Query Add on from http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/addons.php (http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/addons.php) but am having trouble configuring it in Servers Alive I downloaded the installer and ran it. It asked for install location: default was C:\Program Files (x86)\salive however my servers alive install is at C:\Program Files (x86)\Woodstone\Servers Alive I first tried in C:\Program Files (x86)\Woodstone\Servers Alive and noted that the add-on (dll, help file, uninstaller, install log and .tlb) was installed into C:\Program Files (x86)\Woodstone\Servers Alive\salive Then restarted servers alive, added new check, chose external com, and noted that the ODBC Query Add-on was an option in the drop down (good). Clicked configure button and noted that comSAWrapper.exe process started in task manager; however no pop up window or anything showed up to actually configure things. Killed servers alive, killed comSAWrapper process, copied 5 files from C:\Program Files (x86)\Woodstone\Servers Alive\salive to C:\Program Files (x86)\Woodstone\Servers Alive (I thought maybe the dll needed to be in the same folder as servers alive executable) Same result, comSAWrapper process started, but no configuration window or anything opened. Uninstalled COMODBC via programs and features on the server Reinstalled, and this time let odbc add-in install in default location: C:\Program Files (x86)\salive Same result, comSAWrapper process started, but no configuration window or anything opened. Can someone please provide some assistance on how I should install and or run this add-on so that I can configure and use it? Thanks Jonathan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . RE: [SA-list] SAlive freezing while writing report from template
Maybe that Brett can tell you how it behaves on his system. Also what happens on the supported v8? dirk. From: Servers Alive Discussion List [mailto:salive@woodstone.nu] On Behalf Of Starkey, Parry S Sent: Wednesday, November 09, 2016 4:15 PM To: Servers Alive Discussion List Subject: [SA-list] SAlive freezing while writing report from template We recently downloaded one of the report template examples from http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/template_examples.php (http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/template_examples.php) - the one by Brett Hanson which is awesome and uses an XML and XSLT combination to produce the report. We have noticed that ServersAlive freezes up while writing to the XML file on occasion. I can find no pattern to the freeze I have tracked it happening after 28 cycles, 109 cycles, and 164 cycles. Is it possible that the file gets locked if someone has it open in a browser (which I know would be fully expected since it is a report we produce to look at) and ServersAlive cant write to it and locks up completely? ServersAlive stops responding completely when this happens. I have included the lines of the log pertinent to this issue showing that it stops right before writing the report file (at the 2:03 AM mark in the example below). Just curious if anyone has experienced this issue before. We removed all report generation for now to see if it remedies the issue of ServersAlive freezing up. RE: [SA-list] External COM ODBC Query check
What version of Servers Alive are you using? From: Servers Alive Discussion List [mailto:salive@woodstone.nu] On Behalf Of Thomas F Piersa Sent: Wednesday, October 05, 2016 4:45 PM To: Servers Alive Discussion List Subject: [SA-list] External COM ODBC Query check My basic Ping and TCP checks are working fine. I believe that Im having trouble with a Query check. But Im not sure how to diagnose it. Server Alive keeps hanging when they are enabled after several(50-100 cycles) working checks. When I disable 2 External COM Query Checks everything works fine. Any tips on how to diagnose and solve this would be helpful. If you set the alert on 1 down, it will give you the requested alert on the 1st failure, and that can be a send or a receive. And yes in your example it could lead to an continious up/down situation with a lot of alerts. I don't see another way to to this. From: Servers Alive Discussion List [mailto:salive@woodstone.nu] On Behalf Of Chris Coho Sent: Friday, September 30, 2016 3:55 PM To: Servers Alive Discussion List Subject: [SA-list] SMTP2POP3 Help Im having some issues getting SMTP2POP3 working how I want it. Maybe someone can assist. I tried a check sending an email from my mail server to gmail in operating mode SMTP + POP3. Works, but the problem we just found was we had an issue related to the mail leaving our facility. I had alerts set on 2 failures and was never alerted because the send always succeeded, even though the POP3 check kept failing. But if I set it to alert on 1 failure in this same scenario I would just keep getting up and down notices over and over again as the SMTP check was succeeding. Is that accurate and if so is there a way to solve that? I also tried setting it up as 2 checks, one dependent on the first. Check one SMTP and check 2 POP3, with the idea that now Im only alerted when POP3 fails, and itll stay down until it finally gets the email. Problem is the 2nd check keeps failing saying messages received but not send by correct application, but the only emails in the mailbox were SMTP2POP3 emails. Any way to resolve that? Thanks! And from time to time it pops an error and stops working. I am not ready to hang the cause of that problem on ServersAlive but I thought I would install SAlive on another server to monitor SAlive on the first server. At least I would know primary had stopped monitoring and could deal with it. So I installed a second Servers Alive instance on a different (2012) server. I have two checks one a ping which works consistently, the other an external check which runs a VB exe that I have been using for years with SAlive, and works fine on the primary server. I have SAlive running and the problem entry in maintenance with SAlive is checking every minute, when I set the problem entry to active, when the check fires on the next cycle, the SAlive GUI goes to Not Responding. I have also tried to run other external programs they too hang SAlive. By hang, I mean the SAlive GUI goes to not responding and stays there. I can X out of the GUI so there is still some control but it ends ungracefully with a Windows is not responding dialog. The details from the dialog dont give much of a clue (below) to me anyway. When it is hung, the external check I am running does not appear in task list so I would claim it is getting stuck before it can actually fire the external check. I have learned that if I set the external program to cmd /c test.bat where test.bat contains my exe, THAT works. I also learned that setting check to cmd /c executable.exe hangs. I guess I can run my check with a batch file, but I have never had to before and wonder why this instance is different. My primary version is 7.9 this version is 8.0 ( thought I would test new version when I installed this second instance ). Anybody got and ideas or means of further troubleshooting this behavior? That's already in the product. You can do a CTRL-D (or EDIT - new entry based on ). RE: AW: [SA-list] Windows 7, Access is denied dialogue box and the Servers Alive Notification Area icon
What kind of changes are you doing? To the entries or in the setup? The service that is shown in RED, what does it give as reason for the down? And if the gui (none checking mode) is not running, what does the webinterface as status for that entry and what reason for that status? There is no date on a next official release... Knowing that you can configure the service using the GUI from the start menu. To configure the service the remote client is not necessary. So what is the purpose of the remote client ? Some bugs: Starting the GUI from the remote client, one service keeps being marked red although it is running again and no server is down in the traffic light. When I have the service running AND the GUI, i have two serversalive.exe in the task manager. Closing the GUI normally kills one process, but sometimes both processes keep running although GUI is closed. When is the next stable release to be expected ? RE: [SA-list] Unique id varible in SA ?
In the current beta (2584 build) I just added a feature that will help you :-) In all location were you can use the % parameters you can now also point to a custom script. Example: You have a VBS file called c:\myscripts.vbs and within this file you have a function called myoutput function myoutput(x) myoutput=1234 end function In the SETUP: General\Custom Scripts you define a new script and point to this file and to the name of the function (myoutput in the example). This will give you an ID (for example 3) In the locations were you can use the % parameters you can also use (SCR=3) which will be replaced by the output of the script with ID 3 Example: HTTPpost to URL http://www.something.com/(SCR=3)/something (http://www.something.com/(SCR=3)/something) will become http://www.something.com/1234/something (http://www.something.com/1234/something) The beta can be found on http://beta.woodstone.nu (http://beta.woodstone.nu) Dirk Bulinckx Servers Alive - http://www.woodstone.nu (http://www.woodstone.nu/) StellarDNS (DNS Hosting) - http://www.stellardns.com (http://www.stellardns.com/) From: Servers Alive Discussion List [mailto:salive@woodstone.nu] On Behalf Of Artur Kudelka Sent: Friday, January 03, 2014 10:31 PM To: Servers Alive Discussion List Subject: Re: [SA-list] Unique id varible in SA ?
