I believe this would work if:
1. You are running 2003 Server. (Which you are.)
2. You have the latest version of Terminal Services client.

Haven't tried it because we are running 2000 Server.

If you run SA as a service and would like to maintain via Terminal Services,
you can run RDP from the command line and enter using the console. Mstsc
/v:servername /console. This will allow SA to show up on the task bar, and
allow editing without stopping the service.

This is a constant problem at our site. (I have too many helpers.)

I prefer to run SA as a service. If you do so, make sure to setup an ID and
password and enter them on the checks that need authentication. The service
runs with the system account and desktop interaction.

If you desire to perform maintenance remotely using Terminal Services, then
you must stop the SA service, and then launch the application.
Make your changes, and don't forget to save before you exit. After exiting,
restart the SA service. One draw back to this approach is you lose history.
All
items that are down will Alert and you will no longer have your running
since information.

If you want to run as a service and use the desktop interaction feature,
then you need to use a product like PCAnywhere instead of terminal services.
If it is a COMPAQ server you can use the RILO card interface.

I have SA v4.1.1591 installed on a Windows 2003 server. I am a little
fuzzy about the difference between running as an application and as a
service. I have seen this talked about on this maillist, but I am not
understanding the difference.

I do know that I made a small change to a check from a Terminal Services
session, and the next time I was at the SA console, the change had not been
made there.

I can't find anything in the Administration Guide about the differences.

Thanks, Mike

Jason,
Do you ever get email alerts? Within each alert, you have to
configure it to send you a message, have you verified that's it configured
under the ones that you tested?

Hi,

This is my second posting for the same problem (no response to the first
one). This time I had scheduled downtime on our mail server, but left SA
running to see what would happen. Again I didn't get any messages and the
debug log doesn't show any attempt to send a email message to me. I have
included my initial message below the following log messages. Any help

Initial Message to Mailing List

Hi,

I have just recently purchased Servers Alive and seem to be having
inconsistent alerts. The following examples show that a disk exceeded its
limit, yet I never received a email message. The SA systray icon went red,
but as you will see in the log there was no mention of SA trying to send
email.

The line was red and I had a stop sign in the systray, but I didn't get
emailed. I changed the limit to 700MB and forced a check manually and was
alerted.

RE: [SA-list] Telnet, Start Checking, and 99% Utilization by SA 4.1R1591

2004-04-27 Thread Mike Roelofs
We've got the same issue that ServerAlive is getting a 99% utilization when
checking on a W2K server, but i think it's normal because it's doing it's
tasks as quick as possible.
Maybe it's an option that Sa uses less CPU power ?

H, you know, I was doing some Telnet checks to SA on an old NT4 box at
the house. It seemed to do the same thing after several cycles. Never looked
into it further because it's such a crappy server, so I wasn't completely
surprised. But, maybe it's not the hardware...

I had a script that would log into Servers Alive at 1am and 6am via telnet
4301 and issue the start checking command.

That way if someone disabled the checking because we had the network/san
down but forgot to bring it back up, we'd still find out before 8am next
morning.

For some reason, servers alive seems to go to 99% utilization(at least
intermittently) when I do that. I'm running the scripts using microsoft
2000 server edition scheduler and reflection.

I'm also running the latest version of SA Web.

I have turned off the scripts and the problem disappeared.

Suggestions?

Onderwerp: [***SPAM***] [SA-list] Run-time error '13': Type mismatch

When I was running Servers Alive 4.1.1591, I had several checks set up to
check perfmon logical disk counters for free megabytes, but I constantly
battled element not found errors. So I turned these checks off.
Recently, I read on this list that the newest beta version (1599 at the
time) resolved this element not found issue by checking disk space in a
different way.

However, when I upgraded to Servers Alive 4.1.1599, all of my perfmon checks
began to fail, and any attempts to edit a perfmon check results in a
Run-time error '13': Type mismatch message, after which Servers Alive
crashes.

I upgraded to beta 1600 today yet still see the same behavior.

Any advice? I'd rather not recreate all of the perfmon checks if I don't
have to.

Thanks!

RE: [SA-list] Command not running

2004-04-20 Thread Mike Roelofs
Maybe you can make future option (on the wish list for v6 ?) with the
schedule to receive missed alert due to schedule when schedule's first time
is reached (a sort of queue) Same issue here : some notifications i don't
wish to receive at night via SMS/Mobile email, but i like to know something
happened first thing in the morning around 7.30.
Now i've set these alerts like you mentioned: 2 times down and every 15
cycles (cycle time 2 minutes) so when schedule is not allowing messages
(22.00-07.00) i'll receive one between 7.00 and 7.30, but i still miss
up/down situations at night and get an alert every 30 mins during a day.
Can you put this on the 'wish-list'??

Could it be the following situation?

Example:
entry URL check
(1) with alert send SMTP mail WHEN 1 times down and back up
(2) with alert command to execute (sms) WHEN 2 times down
and back up SCHEDULE from 8pm until 6am
(3) with alert command to execute WHEN 3 times down and
backup SCHEDULe from 8pm until 6am

7:00pm URL check is down
= SMTP mail is send
7:02pm next cycle and URL check is down again
= nothing is done : the WHEN part of alert (2) says that it
should be done however due to the schedule the alert is not send.

8:01pm URL is still down
= this is the 31st cycle that it's down, so no additional
alert should be done
8:03pm URL is sill down
= this is the 32nd cylce that it's down, so no additional
alert should be done

First the WHEN part is evaluated and if that gives a true we check the
schedule.
At 7:02 (2nd down cycle) the WHEN part of (2) does gives up a TRUE (execute
alert) BUT the schedule says not to do the alert, that's why there is no
alert (2) done at that moment.
Then at 8:01pm (first check after 8pm) the WHEN part of alert (2) is
evaluated and gives a false (being don't do this alert), so we're not even
checking the schedule.

Could it be this condition?

That's strange! It's an (old) PIII 700 machine with 512mb ram and W2K pro

With your hostfile and your groups.grp file:
delete of an entry: about 1 second
move of an entry: 4 seconds

Same issue here also with about 50 entries, takes about a minute to get the
controls back

One of the reasons for this request, apart from convenience, is that since
upgrading from SA v3.x to v4.x I find that when I delete a host entry the
GUI takes around 1 minute to come back and allow me to interact with it.
Maybe this in itself is not normal? This may be tied to the fact that when I
first start SA it takes 2-3 minutes for the GUI to become responsive as it
loads the host file. I only have 174 checks in my host file.

RE: [SA-list] Scroll GUI problem (1591)

2004-03-31 Thread Mike Roelofs
So it looks like an issue only in 1591. In the previous release i hadn't
this problem.
Here running on W2K Pro SP3

I'm glad it wasn't just me that saw this problem. I didn't really need the
scroll during updates feature, so turned it off, but I thought for a while
I was screwing it up.

In release 1591 i have the following issue:
With Scroll enabled, entries get highlighted (like clicking on it) during
the scrolling, even if i don't touch the mouse.
This is very annoying because the color of entry can't be seen anymore, and
so from a distance look on the screen i can't see the status anymore.
Clicking on an entry solves this, until the next cycle. Same thing happens.
Tried on another machine too, same issue.
