[Sam-users] Announcement

2024-04-24 Thread Frode Tennebø
Hi all,

It's been quiet here for a very long time, but there is a meet-up happening
soon, on 18th May in Leicester. This is the Facebook-post:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/20486797963/permalink/10161121441942964/.
I know some of you are not on Facebook, so this is a public service. The
announcement follows verbatim below.

Regards,
 -Frode

REMINDER: ONE MONTH TO GO* UNTIL THE COMPUTING EVENT OF THE YEAR -
SAM-AZING 2024 (better title still not been suggested).
*True at time of writing, but due to various distractions, it's now one day
less. Anyway, the point still stands - get your train tickets booked, pump
up your bike tyres, ask your mum for a lift, stop worrying about the League
One play off final - it won't happen.
A reminder of all the details below. Get it booked in - it'd be great to
see the thriving SAM community in its full glory. We were probably never
thriving, but relatively speaking
Date: Saturday 18th May 2024
Location: Retro Computer Museum, Leicester, LE4 9HA (Unit Q)
Time: 12:30pm to 5:30pm
Entry fee: £8.50
There'll be drinks at the nearby Willow pub afterwards and then no doubt
some people will find a curry before catching their trains home. Plenty of
parking on site for those driving.
Andy and Dean have kindly agreed we can use their fabulous venue for this
event, so the only cost is the standard entry fee for those to pay on the
day when they arrive. They have no less than 3 SAMs, so there'll be plenty
on show. I may have to think up a tournament or two
I think there'll be space if anyone does want to bring anything to set up
and show off, but just remember a few more SAM Coupé machines and there'll
be more value there (according to eBay) than in the Bank of England vaults.
And finally, try and remember it's been decades since we last saw each
other, and some of us have bad memories, so make sure you know your speech
"Hello, I'm Ian Doodar, writer of Ball Attack and Planet of the Crisps".
Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Announcement: Sam Revival issue 13 Out Now!

2005-12-31 Thread Colin Piggot
Issue 13 of 'Sam Revival' magazine is now out!

Kicking off issue 13 of Sam Revival is a 14 page news section to give a
lowdown on what's happening in the Sam scene, and a welcomed addition to the
magazine is the new letters section which in this issue features some
questions about the Mayhem Accelerator, some development tools queries and a
request for a machine code routine for palette changes using line interrupts
which is answered with a few pages of source code!

Feature articles in this issue include a look at the Siemens Pocket Reader
by Steve Parry-Thomas, along with the listing for the software he developed
to use it from BASIC via the Comms Interface. In my own feature article I
delve into the pile of unreleased and partially finished games that I bought
the rights to from Hydrasoft earlier in the year.

On the coverdisk with this issue is the full Sam game "Marbles Deluxe' by
Steve Pick. Featuring very colourful graphics in his own unique style
Marbles Deluxe is quite a challenging arcade puzzle game and was originally
released back in 1995. A quick cut and paste from the start of the
instructions... "A genetically engineered biological organism has just been
created for genetic correction experiments. The organism is lovingly
referred to as Willy. Testing Willy is to be an extreme task, as a psychotic
killer is being used for the experiment. Willy has to correct the killer's
damaged brain cells ... all 50 of them!"

This issue of Sam Revival costs £3.00 for the UK, or £3.80 for EU (including
Airmail postage).

I've read that sdcc produces buggy z80 code. I've had good success
with z88dk which there also is a SAM library for.

I really like track 17, and would love to know how the effects work.
I know nothing about phasing noises, or any of the other effects that
you could do. How do they work?

The mayhem accelerator looks great -- I just hope that it won't be too
expensive. Having said that, it'll be great if it can external RAM.

Hopefully I'll get SDCC working with a tool to build SAM disks, and I'll
be able to write some games and maybe an OS. I should imagine it will
be possible to write decent games at 50fps without using much assembly.

One question I'm hoping someone can answer: if you were to emulate the
user-mode of an existing 32-bit architecture using the z80, which one
would you choose, and why? I'm mainly interested in those that are
already supported by the GNU tools, and can be emulated relatively
efficiently.

Announcement: Sam Revival issue 11 out now...

2005-02-14 Thread Colin Piggot
The belated issue 11 of Sam Revival magazine is out now.

This issue of Sam Revival is an audio special, and features a cover CD which
contains music tracks recorded directly from the Sam Coupe. There's music
from a variety of music programs such as E-Tracker, Pro-Tracker and several
MOD Players as well as a whole variety of music played back using various
Sound Interfaces. Tracks recorded from the Quazar Surround really show what
the Sam Coupe can do sonically - there recordings from a variety of software
for it including samples up to 16 bit quality, advanced sample compression,
oversampling and sequencing.

As well as the usual features in the magazine such as the Sam Scene Roundup
(which includes an nine page roundup of the recent ORSAM 2004 computer show
with plenty of photos and includes the preliminary information on the
prototype 'Mayhem Accelerator' I demonstrated there) the rest of the
magazine articles continue on with an audio feel. There is a mammoth article
looking in depth at all the extra sound interfaces that have appeared (or
not as the case may be with some of them!) for the Sam Coupe over the years,
and the software that was written to take advantage of them.

Sam Revival costs £3.00, or 5.50 euros for international readers (including
airmail postage). A three issue subscription costs £8 (15 euros
internationally). For more information on this issue, and back issues please
see the website.

Announcement: Sam Revival issue 10 out now...

2004-09-08 Thread Colin Piggot
Issue ten of Sam Revival is out now, complete with coverdisk. Subscribers
issue's will be in the post tommorrow morning so you should receive them by
the weekend.

What's inside this issue, well the usual mix of Quazar News, Sam Scene
Roundup and the ever popular Sam Snippets!

Onto the feature articles, Simon Owen takes a detailed look at his PacMan
Arcade Machine emulator, and guides us through just how he was able to write
such a program. The article is fairly indepth with lots of technical details
about how the arcade machine is structured and how each segment is emulated
on the Sam - such as Video, Sound and Input controls.

The second feature article is an interview with Warren Lee, you may not have
heard of this chap except from a couple of small games he had published on
Fred magazine years ago, however he is the author of the game on the
coverdisk so this interview delves into his Sam past looking at what he
wrote, and a couple of things he started but never finished.

And the coverdisk.. featuring a game called 'Invasion II', written by Warren
Lee. This was originally coded back in 1996 but was never published.
Invasion II is a great platformer game with the usual 'stop the alien
invasion' game plot, but Warren has paid a lot of attention to detail in
this game with lots of animation in the game. Screenshots can be seen on the
website.

Sam Revival costs £3.00, or 5.50 euros for international readers (including
airmail postage). A three issue subscription costs £8 (15 euros
internationally). For more information on this issue, and back issues please
see the website.

Issue Ten of "Sam Revival" Magazine Out Now - with Coverdisk!

Announcement - Sam Revival issue 9 out now + other news

2004-06-22 Thread Colin Piggot
Issue nine of Sam Revival is out now, and this issue features the first
cover disk! Subscribers issues were sent out early this morning so should
arrive with you tommorrow.

The magazine starts off with the usual Quazar News, as well as the Sam Scene
Roundup, listing news and events from around the Sam world. There's also
some reviews and a sprinkling of the ever popular Sam Snippets.

The feature articles start off with two interviews, the first with Matt
Round who was well known for writing games in 1994/5 with the GamesMaster
game creation system as well as having one commercial release in 1995. The
second interview is with Ken Jarvis, the graphics artist involved with
Sphera which was on of the first Sam games from Enigma Variations way back
in 1990. The final feature article looks at a quirk in an undocumented Z80
opcode in a newer revision of the Z80 from Zilog which I discovered after
replacing a Z80 in a Sam Coupé.

Onto the accompanying cover disk - the first ever Sam Revival cover disk
features two great games. The first is the full version of 'Manic Miner'. If
you are not familiar with the Sam version of this all time classic it
features
the original 20 caverns plus 40 all new ones! (David Ledbury has written a
six part series in the previous issues of Sam Revival looking back at all
the levels and development work on the game!). Also on the cover disk is a
special edition of 'Money Bags'. Originally this was a game for the Sam
Coupe that used the Quazar Surround soundcard to give it a great sampled
soundtrack, but i've reduced the quality of the soundtrack to 4 bits so it
can play through the normal soundchip in the Sam.

This issue of Sam Revival costs £3.00 (or £5.50 euro for international
readers).

Other news... I can now supply the SAA1099 soundchip for spares and repairs,
having tracked some down through an obsolence company I bought a tube full.
All the news etc is kept up to date on the Quazar website.

All the best,

Colin

in this issue is 'The Forgotten Artifacts of Sam", which looks back at some
of the hardware and software that has been released for the Sam over the

Miner, taking a look at the last four levels in each section, as well his
closing words with some more anecdotes from the time the game was developed.
And lastly Wolfgang Haller finishes off his History of B-DOS series, looking
at the more modern versions of the hard drive DOS.

Announcement - New Revision of the Compact Flash Interface (was Re: Atom Poll)

2004-04-02 Thread Colin Piggot
Seems a good enough opportunity to announce the new revision of the Compact
Flash interface for use with the Atom and B-DOS, to which i've added a few
new features to my exisiting design.

It's now got an LED to show if the interface is powered and has a Compact
Flash card inserted correctly, and a second LED flashes to show when the CF
card is being accessed. Other trivial improvements include reorientating
the IDE connector so it matches the 'standard' direction with PIN1 on the
right hand side when looking at the back, to match the way it is orientated
on normal hard drives and CD-ROM drives.

I've also modified the PCB so that two of these interfaces can be stacked to
make a dual unit - with one card acting as the master device and the second
card as the slave. Once I have soldered together a dual Compact Flash unit
and tested it with the Atom and B-DOS on the Sam i'll report my findings!

The price of the Compact Flash Interface remains unchanged, keeping it
priced at £17.99, and it can still be fitted with an optional ejector button
for an additional £4.50.

A quick photo can be found at: http://www.quazar.clara.net/cfrev3a.jpg

And to answer Edwin's poll, I use CF with the Atom on my Sams, with a few
128MB and 256MB Samsung CF cards :)

All the best,

Colin.

Announcement - Sam Revival 7 out now!

2004-01-01 Thread Colin Piggot
Issue seven of Sam Revival is out now. Subscribers were sent their issues a
few days ago so hopefully it will have arrived by now.

Inside this issue it starts off with a roundup of news from the ORSAM show,
and other Sam going ons. The main articles start off with 'MODE 1
Contention' where Simon Owen has carried out an indepth look at the extra
slowdown created by the ASIC when in Mode 1. Wolfgang haller carries on with
his B-DOS articles and David Ledbury continues his walkthrough of the Manic
Miner levels with his usual anecdotes about the games' development. My own
articles look at using high capacity Compact Flash with the CF Interface and
Atom, as well as a detailed look inside the 'Sam In A Can' I made for David
L.

Sam Revival is released bi-monthly, and costs only £2 per issue (or 3.75
euro for international readers). Subscriptions are available for £5 for
three issues. (10 euros internationally). To make things easier I can now
accept payments online by NoChex and Paypal. Issue 8 is expected to be out

I am still waiting for the new mag - alas, I live in ´Germany where

However, I am now using now a CD-ROM which is an LG one (not better

To Adrian: Do it! And wait for my next article which declares, how to

you can run normal music CDs with your SAM.

After a long wait I can now say issue 5 of Sam Revival is now out!

Inside this issue Adrian Brown carries on his large machine code column,
returning to his disk handling routines and giving them a big overhaul
before patching them into the game level editor from the previous issue.
David Ledbury continues his trip down memory lane with the next
installment
of the Manic Miner walkthrough, and Wolfgang Haller returns with an
article
about using B-DOS and a CD-ROM drive. Add in the usual news, hints and
tips
and the 'Sam Snippets' of trivia and it shapes up into another fine
issue.

Subscribers issues were posted this morning, so should start arriving
with
you tommorrow.

Sam Revival is released bi-monthly, and costs £2 per issue (or 3.75 euro
for
international readers). Subscriptions are available for £5 for three
issues.
(10 euros internationally). To order any, or to subscribe, or indeed to
answer any questions then please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am now aiming to get issue six out by the end of July. This is shaping
up
to be quite a bumper issue, as in the mad rush to get issue 5 out I had
to
leave out one article from this issue that I just didn't have time to
finish. I am also hoping for several articles from some new contributors
too
who've been in touch with a few ideas they've had for articles.

Announcement - Price Drops / Other News

2003-06-30 Thread Colin Piggot
It's been just over 8 years now since I started Quazar - it was at the 4th
Sam and Spectrum Gloucester show in April 1995 where I unveiled the Quazar
Surround soundcard, so on this anniversary it's a good time to announce some
price reductions on my hardware for the Sam. Sales of my hardware have been
very encouraging this year so I've taken the leap and had a fairly larger
batch of PCBs made for my interfaces so I can pass on a saving and reduce
the prices of most items.

1) Quazar Surround soundcard - now £49.99 (was £53.99)
2) Quazar Surround Sampler Module - now £26.99 (was £29.99)
3) SID Interface - now £25.99 (was £28.99)
4) Two way euroconnector expansion card - £19.99 (was £24.50)
5) Serial Mouse Interface - £43.99 (was £47.00)
6) PC Keyboard Interface - £49.99 (was £53.99)
7) Disk Drive system - £44.99 (was £48.00)
8) 256K Memory upgrade - £14.99 (was £17.00)
9) Compact Flash Interface - £17.99 (was £19.99)

All the info about my hardware can be found on my website, although it's
still the older prices that are listed there until I get time to update the
site later this week!

I've also got stocks of both 6581 and 8580 SID chips for the SID Interface,
if you are interested in a SID Interface to relive some classic retro music
and require a SID chip for one then I can now help out there.

As you can also see on the website, I have a section for 2nd hand Sam
software I am selling off (soon to be joined by a section for 2nd hand
hardware), I have to update the lists on the site with some more titles that
I've got my hands on recently but in the meantime if you'd like an
up-to-date list of 2nd hand stuff then just drop me an email at

Announcement: New Software to be bundled with SID Interface

2003-04-10 Thread Colin Piggot
Thanks to the talents of Simon Owen, there is now a full SID music player for
use with the SID Interface.

Simon's SID player code emulates the 6510 CPU from the Commodore 64 and allows
the Sam to run in realtime C64 code to play music using the SID soundchip. It's
only taken Simon 11 days to write the emulator from scratch which a remarkable
achievement, and the player can cope with the vast majority of SID tunes and
code that we have tested using it.

Simon has kindly allowed his SID Player code to be used on a new music disk to
accompany the SID Interface, and this will be sent out to existing SID Interface
owners in around a weeks time once I have written a frontend to go with it and
sorted out a selection of music for the disk. Over 20,000 C64 'SID' tunes are
available for download at the 'High Voltage SID Collection' at
http://hvsc.c64.org

Issue 4 of Sam Revival features my article 'SID on SAM', which gives a good
insight into the workings and capabilities of the SID chip from the C64, and a
brief mention of 'SID' music files, and Simon is working on writing an article
explaining his design and (rather fast!) development of his SID Player for a
future article for Sam Revival.

2003-03-02 Thread Colin Piggot
Issue four of Sam Revival is out now! (February / March 2003)

This issue weighs in at 52 pages, and is again packed full! My feature article
takes a look at the SID soundchip from the C64, looking indepth at it's design
and capabilities, how it differs from the SAA1099, using one the Sam in the SID
Interface, and what's been achieved programming wise for it and what I plan to
do in the future with it. The 'Sam In A Can' returns for a short update too,
with details of the new hardware that's been fitted to it since the last article
was written.

Adrian Brown carries on with his coding column - now on part 4 which is entitled
'Mapping The World' in which he looks at generating the graphics, and map editor
for the final game the series of articles is heading towards. David Ledbury
continues his walkthrough of Manic Miner - looking at nine more levels from the
game, and Wolfgang Haller returns with another B-DOS article.

Add in the new releases, reviews and few other bits and bobs and it's another
great issue! Subscriber's issues are sitting here ready to be sent out
tommorrow, so you should have them on Tuesday.

Sam Revival is released bi-monthly, and costs £2 per issue (or 3.75 euro for
international readers). Subscriptions are available for £5 for three issues. (10
euros internationally). Issue five will be out in April.

Subject: Announcement 2 - SID Interface

My second piece of hardware that I am releasing today goes back to my roots
with
computer audio - this 'SID Interface' started out just as a small pet
project
for myself exploring old forms of computer sound.

The 'SID' is the 3 channel synth shound chip used in the Commodore 64.
Because
it was so different to the style of the SAA1099 inside the Sam, I decided to
wire one up and see how is sounded as the synths it produces are quite
different. The SID chip can produce several shapes of waveform - square,
triangle and sawtooth, and combined with controllable volume effects such as
attack, decay and sustain to shape the sound. Add in a couple of other
effects
such as noise and ring modulation and the overall sound the SID can produce
is
quite unique and as a result it is still very popular amoungst computer
audiophiles. (There are even interfaces to use them on the PC!)

The SID interface plugs into the euroconnector on the back of the Sam, and
requires a 12v input to power the SID chip (any 12v PSU that can supply
100mA
can be used, I have fitted a standard 2.1mm power socket to the board - A
suitable plug top PSU can be bought for around a fiver in places like
Argos). A
3.5mm speaker socket is also on the board for connecting some speakers to
it.

The interface is supplied without a SID chip - you'll have to get your hands
on
an old C64 and remove the chip (its usually in a socket so very easy to get
out). As there are two types of SID (6581 - from the original C64, and the
8580
from the redesigned new-look C64) the interface has to be built up
specifically
for the chip that is going to be fitted. Please state which chip you have
when
ordering. I do have a couple of 6581 SID's from old C64's which I bought
when
designing this hardware, and I can supply you with one if required and I can
easily track down some more C64's for more.

I have put together two disks to go with the SID Interface, featuring a
couple
famous tunes from the C64 to show off the SID chip in action.

The SID Interface is available now, priced £28.99. Again piccies can be
found on
the website.

(As a side note - there is an interesting exhibit at the "Game On"
exhibition
which allowed you to listen to a lot of old computer music - mostly from the
C64... the exhibition I think is still at the Royal Museum of Scotland in
Edinburgh just now (I went to see it in November))

My second piece of hardware that I am releasing today goes back to my roots with
computer audio - this 'SID Interface' started out just as a small pet project
for myself exploring old forms of computer sound.

Add in a couple of other effects
such as noise and ring modulation and the overall sound the SID can produce is
quite unique and as a result it is still very popular amoungst computer
audiophiles. (There are even interfaces to use them on the PC!)

The SID interface plugs into the euroconnector on the back of the Sam, and
requires a 12v input to power the SID chip (any 12v PSU that can supply 100mA
can be used, I have fitted a standard 2.1mm power socket to the board - A
suitable plug top PSU can be bought for around a fiver in places like Argos). A
3.5mm speaker socket is also on the board for connecting some speakers to it.

The interface is supplied without a SID chip - you'll have to get your hands on
an old C64 and remove the chip (its usually in a socket so very easy to get
out). As there are two types of SID (6581 - from the original C64, and the 8580
from the redesigned new-look C64) the interface has to be built up specifically
for the chip that is going to be fitted. Please state which chip you have when
ordering. I do have a couple of 6581 SID's from old C64's which I bought when
designing this hardware, and I can supply you with one if required and I can
easily track down some more C64's for more.

I have put together two disks to go with the SID Interface, featuring a couple
famous tunes from the C64 to show off the SID chip in action.

The SID Interface is available now, priced £28.99. Again piccies can be found on
the website.

(As a side note - there is an interesting exhibit at the "Game On" exhibition
which allowed you to listen to a lot of old computer music - mostly from the
C64... the exhibition I think is still at the Royal Museum of Scotland in
Edinburgh just now (I went to see it in November))

Announcement 1 - Compact Flash Interface

2003-01-15 Thread Colin Piggot
I am pleased to announce my first new piece of hardware of 2003 - Compact Flash
Interface.

This small adaptor board allows you to use a Compact Flash card with the Atom
hard drive interface. I had this idea when the hard drive I use in my 'Sam In A
Can' developed a lot of surface errors and corrupt sectors.

By using CF cards (which are getting fairly cheap) it provides a great new
storage solution instead of hard drives. As CF are essentially IDE, they can be
used just like a hard drive with BDOS. I have tested my interface so far using a
32 Meg Samsung CF card (which holds 40 Sam disks worth of data) and a Toshiba 64
Meg CF Card (79 disks worth!).

The small interface can easily sit inside the Sam, an ideal place is just behind
the bay cover for drive 2 - I am supplying the interface with 4 sticky backed
stands so it can be securely mounted inside the Sam. If you require a short IDE
cable to keep the cabling neat I can make them up on request.

The Compact Flash Interface is available now, priced £19.99.

Also available for this interface is an eject button module which clips over the
Compact Flash socket to make it easier to eject the Compact Flash. This is
available for £4.50

Photos of the interface are on my website - URL below.

Actually, I don't know why the article was called a walkthrough - it's not
really a walkthrough in the usual sense. It's actually a very interesting
article by David Ledbury, with lots of little facts and historical
background info. Where specific levels are mentioned, there's a screenshot
and inside info etc. It's worth reading and nice to see Ledbury doing good
stuff again, rather than getting overly insensitive on the mailing list ;)
But I digress...

Errr... it's a bit more indepth than that seeing as it is written by someone who
was involved in the making of the game, so there is bits of info and gossip from
the making of the game and wee anecdotes, not just some boring run of the mill
read about jumping and collecting keys!

Other articles include part 3 of Adrian Brown's coding column. This time
round
he takes a look at starting the coding structure for a game, such as double
buffering screens, keyboard reading and interrupt handling and is complete
with
source code. The hints and tips section has the first part for a full
walkthrough for Manic Miner with all the behind the scenes info and snippets
of
gossip from when it was being made way back in 1990-91. Another article
looks at
the improvements in the latest version of B-DOS.

Subscriber's issues have already been sent out so if they haven't already
arrived you should have them in a day or two.

Sam Revival is released bi-monthly, and costs £2 per issue (or 3.75 euro for
international readers). Subscriptions are available for £5 for three issues.

Announcement - Sam Revival Issue 2

2002-10-30 Thread Colin Piggot
My laser printer is happily churning out the first batch of Issue 2 of Sam
Revival at the moment, so I can now announce that it's out!

This issue weighs in at a hefty 56 pages! Again, its full of Sam goodies
including reviews, hints and tips, Sam snippets, and a large handful of feature
articles including: an interview with Stephen McGreal of Mungus Software in the
new 'What Happened To...' series of articles - which looks at software that was
announced but never released. In a similar style, I also take a look through my
old disks at projects I started but never finished or even announced. There's
some great contributed articles from Adrian Brown, including adding Atom support
into Comet Assembler and he also continues his coding column from the first
issue - this time looking indepth at file handling in machine code and sprite
grabbing.

Subscriber's issues will be sent out over the next few days, so look out for
them popping through your letter boxes soon.

Sam Revival is released bi-monthly, and costs £2 per issue (or 3.75 euro for
international readers). Subscriptions are available for £5 for three issues. (10

From chatting to Colin, this sounds really good and I wish him all the
best. I don't think the problems that tormented SC with delays and
false starts will happen to Sam Revival as Colin has shown over the
years that he's got the committment and energy (and time!) to do cool
things with the blue-footed one.

I just wouldn't want anyone who subscribed to SC to be put off getting
SR. At the end of the day, SC survived 5 issues (in its current form),
which is probably more than quite a few SAM mags ;) I still have all
subbers' addresses etc and hope to get in touch with them soon - maybe
I'll work out something with Colin first regarding transferring
subbers. In the meantime, if I owe anyone on this list a few quid let
me know directly - Frode and Dan particularly come to mind, I think they
subbed near the end and got nothing.

The SC site is actually being worked on - I've really just to get
anonymous FTP access set up for the File Library stuff and then we can
go live. FTP space is about a gig so there'll be no problem there ;)

Anyway, hope all goes well SAM Revival, looking forward to the first
issue.

Gavin

Hi Colin.

I guess it wasn´t ment bad with the price, my first thought was in the same
direction. Of course I see the lot of work in it and I think about to buy one
for
myself. But you should know, that 53,99 Pound are about 86 Euro which is a lot
here
on the "continent". It can be compared, as when english people went to Sweden to
buy alcohol (which is for German and Dutchs also very expensiv in England and
Sweden too). The money has different values. Hope you understand what I mean.

I am impressed about SAM Revival magazin. In the beginning of Gavins paperzine I
wrote him, he can take any articles about the SAM released in my Spectrum/SAM
paperzine. The same I say to you (and if you do, then correct my english
please).
Also I am sure, you are the right man to do it :-) Congrats - you have a new

Announcement 2 (of 2) - PC Keyboard Interface launched

2002-08-07 Thread Colin Piggot
After three months of development my next piece of Sam hardware is now ready for
launch!

My new PC Keyboard Interface allows you to use a PC Keyboard with the Sam.
Fitted internally with the minimum of fuss, this interface is ideal if your
keyboard membrane is damaged, or you just want to use a comfier PC Keyboard or
sit away from the Sam. (While this interface is connected, the original Sam
Keyboard can still be plugged in and used too)

The PC Keyboard Interface maps all the keys and symbols on the PC keyboard
seamlessly to the correct keys on the Sam, as well as having extra functions -
such as NMI and RESET as keys. The interface does not limit the number of keys
that are pressed at a time either, its elegant design maps exactly what you
press so there's no problems where you'd need to press many keys at a time -
such as games.

To fit the interface, three small connectors are soldered to the Sam motherboard
to save having to directly solder wires to it, and only takes a few minutes of
time to do. The interface sits by the memory module inside the sam so does not
get in the way of either of the disk drive bays and it connects by three cables
to the small connectors on the motherboard, which also means it can be
disconnected without any desoldering. A fourth cable is then fed through the
grill on the bottom of the Sam and connects to the external pod box with the
PS/2 Connector for the keyboard - this eliminates having to drill any holes in
the Sam casing.

The PC Keyboard Interface is available now priced £53.99.

Well, it's a little difficult to get to my OWN SAM, from here.

I wonder how much it would cost to get a real SAM running in the USA..

Hey, Simon, we could sell them. ;)

One of my reasons for not writing about new projects is that my SAM has been
"off-line" for sometime, ever since I accidentally wired the SCART to +400V :(
Thankfully it only blew the Motorola sync chip

the ocean.

Announcement

Friends, old and new -

I forgive the mass mailed aspect of this message, but to write to
each of you individually would be a highly time consuming affair, and
there are bound to be people who I've forgotten to mail, and my time
is going to be in part taken with making sure I remember these.

So, here is the announcement.

Myself, James Curry and Terri Huddleston have just married in
Morehead, Kentucky. This announcement is slightly delayed, as we
have been on the road driving over 1,000 miles to Manhattan, Kansas
and I've had to arrange email access once we arrived.

We're here together and happy. :) :)

As for where we're going in the future? I can't say, because I don't
know! In the meantime, you can reach me at any of my usual email
address. The best to use is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

(Note: this is attempt 2 to send to these two addresses due to my
ineptness at typing. ;) )

I've not really been posting much on the mailing
list over the past few months due to pressures at work.

Anyway, over the past few weeks several people
have been enquiring as to what is going on in regards to Blitz &
Persona.

The bottom line is - Blitz 9 was actually
finished approximately 2-3 months ago, with the final version being emailed off
to Persona HQ several times - for final checking and despatch.

This also contained an excellent playable demo
of an incredible game from Chris Pile - an accurate conversion of the classic
Defender game.

I now realise that this could never have been
recieved by the powers that be, and despite a number of emails requesting
progress - I've not yet recieved an answer.

If anyone is still awaiting any software, please direct any
enquiries directly to me: I will be chasing matters up next sunday (actually
having a day off work!) and getting something finally sorted out!
